Gualala Veterinary Clinic - Our Nena 04/01/2012 - 07/21/2023

Gualala Veterinary Clinic

This clinic is the best clinic I've ever been to! I travel a lot so I've been to tons of vets. I…read morebrought in my senior dog who was passing blood in his stool. it was very serious and he also has numerous ongoing issues that need to be maintained. Because of this I also suggested that they test his thyroid, test for a UTI, and a few other things he has trouble with regularly. often vets do not keep track of everything he has going on or everything I want tested. this vet had no issue and tested for everything. they covered all their bases. they were very responsive during his treatment and diagnosed him with stress colitis and did additional testing to rule out underlying issues that may be causing his illnesses. I appreciate a doctor that will go further than addressing symptoms and actually figure out the underlying cause. My dog was healthy again after the treatments suggested by the vet and he's doing fantastic.

This clinic is such a gift. Every person who works here is kind, professional, and thorough. We…read morebrought our livestock guardian dog here after his usual vet (in the area we used to live) barely glanced at him, then told us he would need day-long sedation, full x-rays, etc. to figure out what, if anything, was going on with one of his teeth. I'd noticed discoloration at the gumline, but no abscess. This would cost $1,800 minimally and possibly $3k+, if they "went in and found they had to do multiple extractions." Meanwhile, we learned Dr. Barkhurst had come to town and taken over the practice, so we could finally get a new, local vet. We brought our dog in and he had the most thorough examination of his life, including of his mouth. The issue that could have cost $1,800+? It was some discoloration by the gumline where some enamel had worn off. Dr. Barkhurst scraped it off with a dental tool while he was a good boy. We'll never go elsewhere.

Thoroughly Impressive. This was my first visit to Animal Hospital and the staff managed my 13 year…read moreold shiba inu with competent expertise. Based on knowing the breed's challenging traits, the vet used effective techniques to handle my shiba and successfully completed the task at hand. The vet spent quite a bit of time in the examination room getting to know my dog, to get my dog acclimated and to stay calm. Great and thorough communication with the staff all around, from the front desk to the intake and examination. Literally, a weight has been lifted off my shoulders regarding a veterinary clinic that knows how to handle a shiba inu and that my dog's needs are met. Thank you so very much Animal Hospital

I rarely leave negative reviews, but after losing my male eastern indigo snake, "Indica", I feel…read moreobligated to share my experience so other exotic pet owners can make an informed decision. I brought Indica to Animal Hospital of Sebastopol because I specifically wanted an experienced reptile veterinarian for a federally threatened species. Before scheduling, I asked how the urgent drop-off process worked and was told I would receive updates during the day regarding the doctor's findings and treatment recommendations. I also asked to make sure the vet felt comfortable treating a rare & valuable species. When I dropped him off, I explained that I work in healthcare as a medical receptionist and cannot answer phone calls while checking in patients. I specifically told the staff I would be available during my lunch break from 12:20-1:20 p.m. and asked that, outside of that window, they leave me a voicemail or send me a text if they needed anything. Instead, I received no communication at all. By around 4:15 p.m., I became worried enough to step away from work while a coworker covered my desk so I could call the hospital. I was placed on hold multiple times, transferred between staff members, and no one could tell me whether my snake had even been seen. My frustration was never that emergency patients came first. I understand triage. My frustration was the complete lack of communication despite being told I would receive updates and despite providing multiple ways to reach me. I was also charged for sexing my snake without anyone telling me beforehand there would be an additional fee. That charge was only removed after I questioned it. When I spoke with Dr. Annabelle, I repeatedly told her that I appreciated her fitting my snake into her schedule and understood emergency patients came first. I was never asking her to stop treating another patient. However, when I expressed concerns about the lack of communication and told her I did not believe this was simply a bad shed, I felt dismissed. The conversation focused on how she sees approximately 15 patients a day, that she couldn't interrupt anesthetized procedures for a stable snake, that this is how urgent drop-off appointments work, and that she texted me "when she could." The problem was that the text wasn't sent until after I had already called the hospital because I was worried and couldn't get answers from anyone. Afterward, I emailed the practice manager. The billing discrepancy was corrected, but I had to follow up separately just to obtain my snake's records. I was then told they felt I should seek another veterinary hospital. As Indica's condition worsened, I emailed Animal Hospital of Sebastopol again asking for medical guidance because Dr. Annabelle was the only veterinarian who had physically examined him. I explained that I had followed the treatment plan exactly and desperately needed to know whether what I was seeing was expected. That email was never answered. I ultimately had to make the heartbreaking decision to euthanize Indica. The day after he was gone, UC Davis called asking my permission to send his records to Animal Hospital of Sebastopol because AHOS had requested them. It was devastating to learn they had time to contact another veterinary hospital regarding my snake's case while never responding to my final plea for help. I later received a second opinion from UC Davis, where I was informed that the original diagnosis from Animal Hospital of Sebastopol was not the correct diagnosis, just as I had predicted. Based on my experience, I would never trust Animal Hospital of Sebastopol with another exotic animal. If you own an exotic pet and your instincts tell you something isn't right, don't be afraid to seek a second opinion. I only wish I had done so sooner.

We have had animals for over 40 years, and this was the worst vet office we have ever been to!…read more The vet techs are terrible and incredibly condescending. The male vet tech grabbed our puppy by the collar and attempted to drag him onto the scale. When I attempted to intervene, I said "I can just lift him and set him on the scale, we are really trying to keep his early vet visits positive," he replied, "how are we suppose to examine him, if we can't even touch him?" I have had animals my whole life and have worked with them for several years and this was beyond shocking to hear. He never even said hi to our puppy, he just grabbed at his collar and tried to manhandle him (I am sure our puppy was terrified at this point). The two female vet techs were equally bad (very unfriendly). Not one staff member even said hello to our puppy or attempted to establish rapport. It was a very cold, controlling and man handling type environment, which had to be very scary for a puppy's first vet visit (outside of vaccinations). We were present and they were terrible....I can only imagine how they are, without pet parents present. We will absolutely NOT be going back, and recommend you find another vet office, where they care about creating a safe and welcoming environment for animals! Run!

I highly recommend Dr Haynes and his assistant Todd to take care of your pet…read more Most importantly they do not overbook so no crowded waiting room. They always have time to see my little dog Bailey and treat her as if she were part of their family If you are on a tight budget and your pet needs care, you can tell them what your limits are and they will work with you to give your pet the best care within that budget limit. Dr Haynes and Todd recently did oral surgery on Bailey and extracted several teeth. They went above and beyond doing what was necessary for Bailey within my budget and now she is a very happy, healthy girl.
