This clinic is the best clinic I've ever been to! I travel a lot so I've been to tons of vets. I brought in my senior dog who was passing blood in his stool. it was very serious and he also has numerous ongoing issues that need to be maintained. Because of this I also suggested that they test his thyroid, test for a UTI, and a few other things he has trouble with regularly. often vets do not keep track of everything he has going on or everything I want tested. this vet had no issue and tested for everything. they covered all their bases. they were very responsive during his treatment and diagnosed him with stress colitis and did additional testing to rule out underlying issues that may be causing his illnesses. I appreciate a doctor that will go further than addressing symptoms and actually figure out the underlying cause. My dog was healthy again after the treatments suggested by the vet and he's doing fantastic. read more

This clinic is such a gift. Every person who works here is kind, professional, and thorough. We brought our livestock guardian dog here after his usual vet (in the area we used to live) barely glanced at him, then told us he would need day-long sedation, full x-rays, etc. to figure out what, if anything, was going on with one of his teeth. I'd noticed discoloration at the gumline, but no abscess. This would cost $1,800 minimally and possibly $3k+, if they "went in and found they had to do multiple extractions." Meanwhile, we learned Dr. Barkhurst had come to town and taken over the practice, so we could finally get a new, local vet. We brought our dog in and he had the most thorough examination of his life, including of his mouth. The issue that could have cost $1,800+? It was some discoloration by the gumline where some enamel had worn off. Dr. Barkhurst scraped it off with a dental tool while he was a good boy. We'll never go elsewhere. read more

We were very happy with our cat, Fluffy's visit to the Gualala Veterinary Clinic. The new vet is wonderful, caring, and knows what she's doing. Fluffy wasn't thrilled to have one of her anal glands expressed, but it was so much better than having it rupture! Three month ago, before we came to Sea Ranch, one of her glands ruptured and we had no idea that it had happened. Our vet in Montana found the rupture on her regular vet appointment. Fluffy had to have emergency surgery and worst of all, she had to wear the dreaded cone for a week. Now that we know that cats can have infected anal/scent glands, we'll try to be less oblivious. We're glad our kitty doesn't need to suffer because of our ignorance and that there's a vet here that can treat her. Thank you Dr. Barkhurst! read more

First and foremost, I want to thank all the staff at Gualala Veterinary Clinic for taking our call and really having compassion in one of the worst situation that could happen while on a camping trip. Our 11 year old Boxer girl accompanied us and started displaying serious symptoms that she would need emergency services. We called all local vets near Fort Bragg and were denied, even with my cry of concern. I felt hopeless that I couldn't find a vet to treat her until I googled and called over and was greeted with, what is the concern and how far are you? The two staff (women) helped us as we arrived but it was already too late. My girl, passed the rainbow bridge on the 1.5 hours drive. Dr. Pfiel had a empathetic manner as he came out to our truck to confirm she had expired. She is not suffering and is at peace. Even though our girl passed, the staff made an effort to help, unlike all the other clinics we called. My husband and I are so grateful. I do apologize I was so emotionally, I didn't get the names of the assistants but you all are true heroes to our animals! The two stars are for the first appointment and follow up with Dr. Pfeil and staff. My feline companion stopped eating and drinking and was in pain. Dr. Pfeil meticulously reviewed old vet records and based his opinion on that and his exam. His staff was friendly and professional, and the visit included a courtesy follow up call. The missing three stars are based on the second appointment. The generic protocol of antibotics, pain relief, and fluids did not alleviate the pain and suffering, so I brought him back in, and the welcome at the front desk was considerably less friendly. When the tech came into the examining room, her first comments were "wow, your cat has so many problems for a cat so young," and "he's a very picky eater." I replied that I felt like we were being judged, that Sparkles isn't a picky eater, he's in pain, which is why he's choosing not to eat and that's his only "problem." It was very clear to me we weren't welcome, at least by this tech and the front desk. Dr. Pfeil came in and was rushed and dismissive with me. He was obviously frustrated that he wasn't able to identify the source of the pain and his diagnosis was incorrect the first time. I told him that I noticed Sparkles was bothered by something in his mouth, maybe his gums. Dr. Pfeil sighed, roughly examined Sparkles' mouth, and said offhandedly, "something is wrong with his gum; maybe he bit himself in there." He left it at that. No recommendation for a more thorough exam, even though both previous vets also noted gum problems. There were also no follow up calls this time. When I got Sparkles home, he was in so much pain that his fur was standing on end. I have done extensive research since leaving the vet's office. Dr Pfeil is the third vet to mention something wrong with gums, but only as a secondary observation. Another vet I consulted suspects STOMATITIS. It is extremely painful and often goes unnoticed until it is too late, and the cat suffers immensely. The only way this gets treated is if a cat's human is attentive, observant, and advocates for the cat. I did that at Gualala vet, and the response was so negative I've had to change vets. One of the most troubling aspects of the second visit is discovering the note that Dr. Pfeil added to my file about my feeling too scared and anxious about my feline companion, about being too emotional and not agreeable enough. There is nothing as efficient--or as deeply, ethically wrong--as intentionally discouraging a client's advocacy by shaming her and her feline companion into not coming back. Finally, Dr. Pfeil shared with me that Sparkles peed himself. He said lots of cats do that. I've never seen Sparkles scared enough to evacuate. Ever, and we've been through some very scary stuff. Just made me think that if Dr. Pfeil can be so callous to a concerned client in person, how empathetic--how patient and gentle--is he with a cat when it's just him and the techs? I will never put my feline companion through a visit here again. I'm grateful for local word-of-mouth that pointed out not everyone has received five-star treatment from Dr. Pfeil and his staff, even if the mostly 2016 Yelp stars might indicate otherwise. read more

We have a place at Sea Ranch and found ourselves away from our typical pet doctor. Sadie had been to the Santa Rosa vet only days before for a nasty infection and licking abscess on her foot. As it happens, because dogs can't talk it often takes a couple tries to get to the right diagnosis. She was licking STILL and it was getting nasty after the first visit to her regular vet. An emergency - we needed to get in. The office was quite friendly and accommodated us for the next AM. We arrived - we got the paper work settled and they took Sadie in (because of the pandemic). She was scared of course. The doctor came out after awhile and explained that he thought she might have a foxtail up in her "finger" in her paw. He asked permission to sedate her and go looking for what was there if anything. Long story short....he found what the first vet missed. It happens. She indeed had a foxtail and they removed it and showed it to us. Poor girl. She was in pain the first night home. We gave her her meds and she settled down. The NEXT DAY she was 75% and the day after 90 and a few days later she is really happy. The original blotchiness / allergy issues are still working their way out but the big issue is resolved. And we will be in touch with Pfeil if they don't resolved after the meds course. We found Dr. Pfeil, professional, caring, responsive and frankly would consider him to be Sadie's doc of record if it were not so far...but we might switch anyway. Also Keelyn - the veterinary assistant was very helpful. Friendly, caring compassionate. These folks love animals - it is obvious. read more

Awful POS. Just talked to the most unpleasant, vulgar woman on the phone right now. I hope they go out of business. They seriously do not care about pets. The conversation started with me asking if I could bring my dog in for a dental appointment. The beastly receptionist says 'well you need to get an appointment for an evaluation first'. Yes you moron, thats why I am calling!!! She then says 'well, we are only taking emergencies so I can give you an appointment FAR in the future'. I explained I believe it may be urgent based on my dogs symptoms. It was 4:45 pm when I called and this witch says 'can you call back on Monday so I can see what we have?' I literally am floored at the lack of care and professionalism. You piece of s--t, rest assured we will be definitely talking on Monday. Oh yeah, another thing, I tried to call back BEFORE 5 and they are already gone. Hmmmm, I think I will try the Better Business Bureau next and after that we are going to have to report it to the American Veterinary Society. I will not rest til people who are in their professions of CARE, start TO care about their jobs. As small businesses are closing ALL over the country, you would think that the customer (and the distressed dog) that you pledged to take care of, would mean more. We cannot say enough good things about this vet's office. Our Yorkie, Moochie, was having some breathing difficulties which we noticed had gotten worse. A friend told me about the Gualala clinic and how much she liked Dr. Pfeill who she spoke very highly of. Upon examining her for the first time, after a little blood work, Dr. Pfeill was able to immediately diagnose her issue as congenital heart disease! It is very sad that had she been diagnosed or even checked for this earlier, more could have been done to extend her life. Now Moochie's spirits are up again since she's receiving medication to help her condition. We've already received a call from Dr. Pfeill checking on her. read more

I recently had our dog neutered here and it was over $1100.00 thats right for a simple neuter! I was shocked. If you are looking for a reasonable and fair priced local vet. drive to Santa Rosa. This is not the place to go. They took excellent care of my pet but the price is ridiculous. I could have had 4 dogs fixed for the price elsewhere. Truly, as good as it gets! While traveling with our two dogs during our summer vacation, our 8 month old lab contracted an ear infection. Not knowing where to go, I inquired at the front desk of our campground in Manchester as to our options. They pointed me in the direction of the Gualala Veterinary Clinic. Being the only vet around (and us being from out of town,) I was very nervous as to how much the bill could run. (Emergency status, new patient fees, etc.) I was also nervous about our dog having to meet (and be treated by) someone new during this painful time. Beyond our expectations, Dr. Steven Bohn was friendly, intelligent and spot on in his handling, assessment, and care of our young girl, and he brought instant relief to her painful ear. Likewise, the bill was more than fair and completely unexpected, a welcome bit of humanity to these weary travelers who had driven nearly 914 miles to camp just three days before! My beloved elderly dog had an emergency this morning and my vet in FB couldn't get him in. I haven't been to the GVC for a long time and they were busy with emergencies and appointments, but they fit my dog in regardless. They initially told me that I should bring him in and leave him so that the doc could fit him in when possible. However, when I arrived, they took my dog straight back for evaluation. I'm sorry I don't recall the new owner/veterinarian's name?? He's fantastic. I really appreciate his bedside manner with my sweet boy. My dog loves him & his staff and my dog is no saint at the vet. One of the most caring vet hospitals I've ever been to. Dr. Bohn and his staff went above and beyond with their kindness and compassion during a very difficult time for us. The staff and relief vet first saw us 5 minutes before closing on a Friday night, taking time to be thorough in ruling out bloat for my older male dog. They exhausted possible diagnosis and sent us back to our rental home with pain meds to wait to see if he would improve (bloat was ruled out), making sure we had several emergency vet numbers and addresses before we left. All of the staff had stayed late to help us. After a few days, my sweet boy was getting worse, not better, and I called Dr. Bohn AT HOME ON A SUNDAY to see if he'd meet us to put our boy to sleep. He didn't hesitate to say yes. He kindly and gently put our guy out of his misery, helped us put him on the floor so our other dog could know he was gone (found out later that Dr. Bohn has a bad back and did all of this despite that) and was kind and quiet. I have never met a vet before that puts his home number on his clinic answering machine. We felt so supported by Dr. Bohn, his staff, his lovely relief veterinarian - the whole crew. Because there are no private cremation services in Gualala, the clinic kept our dog's body until we could pick him up a few days later to drive him to our vet in the Bay Area for cremation. They kindly wrapped him in a sheet from our car and met us early in the morning to pick up the body so we could make it to our own vet before they closed for Christmas Eve. Again, gently flexing to our needs. We had been there once before after we had allowed our past older dog to overdo it on the lovely Gualala Beaches, and they were kind and efficient then as well - that was years before. We will never forget the experience we had at Gualala Vet Hospital. We are so grateful for them. read more

Our lab shepherd mix is on a special prescription food for allergies and irritable bowel. While vacationing in Sea Ranch I about fainted when I realized that miscalculated how much food to bring with us and we were going to run out. This was a true crisis- any other food equals major diarrhea. Thanks to Gualala Veterinary Clinic the crisis was averted. The office staff were very kind and kept me up to date with the awaiting delivery. read more
