LOL Dr. Varley and all his staff are compassionate and very easy to talk too. Either Online, Portal Use or Calling in making appointments, paying bills, Etc., is very easy. Southern Pain Management offers all the traditional pain/nerve blocks, Radio Frequency Ablasions, Etc; Several new innovative procedures including Ketamine infusion treatments at affordable cost to patients. The science of Ketamine Infusion makes too much sense for insurance companies to my help pay for such a thing. They would much rather pay for pain medicine. To my knowledge insurance pays ZERO MONEY for Ketamine Infusion Treatments. Hunter Chatham, CRNA manages all IV Theropy, he too is excellent, professional and compassionate. He was the only doctor in the Birmingham area who was willing to refill my implanted pain pump. Before finding him, I had to drive to Slidell, LA every month to have it filled. He and his staff work together as a team. It is comforting to see teamwork in one's medical care. They are also very good at what they do, and each one plays a part in your care. I have suffered from hip and thigh pain since I had a defective hip replaced with a non-defective one. I thought that the pain was caused by all the surgery. Thank goodness Dr. Varley had other impressions. He discovered that the pain was emanating from my spine and that Radio Frequency Ablation (RFA) was the solution. I had been having it performed on the other side of my spine for several years, with good results. Walking without pain is truly amazing, after suffering with it for so many years. I highly recommend Southern Pain Specialists for anyone with back/spine problems.

Good Legit doctor if you are a Chronic patient or looking for a rehab doctor. Fairly strict…read morerequirements & demanding Doctor. Staff also strictly enforcement of rules, times & Dr. Moons orders. Doesn't really accept any excuses/reasons for being even 1 minute late, reschedule nor not following orders. He will flat cut you off or stop seeing you as a patient if strict orders are not followed. Expect constant drug tests, bloodwork to confirm that you're following orders as well as at least yearly MRI/Cat-scan recertifications. If you truly have an chronic issue he is great for digging in and helping. If it's not a Chronic issue and you have no documentation to prove your conditions then this Doctor is probably not for you. If you're over medicated and needing help then this doctor is a good choice. I have over 5 years of experience with this Doctor and took issue with the strictness as a new patient so be warned this is not a get what you want practice, it's a get what you minimally need practice as far as medicating. There's no fools here if you are just looking for something short term I wouldn't go to this practice you probably won't be happy with the outcome. Some insurance he takes some he doesn't. BlueCross is not accepted but you can send bill in to BC for reimbursement. Dr. Moon is pretty smart in a lot of areas when it comes to hormone replacement, vitamin deficiency, metabolism, bones, muscle, the back & neck components with pain management. However he is pretty head strong he knows what he knows and you are not going to change his mind. Overall he is a good doctor and cares. He has a lot of special certifications that I have not seen other physicians have in this area.

The last text encounter we had, he called me a very mean hurtful name. This is one of those doctors who should not be in business. Besides that, his staff are always in a bad mood. They raise their tone of voice and yell at you. I have audio proof of this. Oh, and count on waiting at least 75-90 minutes because they are so unorganized there. Everyone there is overwhelmed, exhausted, and rude. Anyway, don't go to this doctor if you are a female under the age of 55 because he will most definitely flirt with you and then be mean to you and hurt your feelings. This business will be shut down, so don't even bother looking into it. There are plenty of other pain clinics in this area. No need to see one who just wants to bang you and call you mean names out of the blue. I think he has a mental disorder due to the name he called me. ***This doctor knows everything about me and he took advantage of that and that's what the big deal is***

She was always kind, respectful, and welcoming -- she knew patients by name and made every visit easier. I really hated to see her go, and honestly the service hasn't felt the same since. But today I met Brittany, and she has by far been the best part of my experience in a long time. I'm not sure if she's a nurse or what her exact role is, but she came into the room with genuine concern and compassion. She actually seemed like she cared about me as a patient -- and that makes a huge difference. Some people come to work just for a check, but Brittany showed real care, patience, and empathy. Thank you, Brittany. You truly made my day, and I just wanted to shout you out for treating people the way they deserve to be treated.

Dr. Mallempati: 5 stars His staff: 1 star…read more We made an appointment to see Dr. Mallempati in the Pell City location, which by the way, is not easy to find. He's only at this location one day a week, I think, and they use another doctor's office/optometrist (?) facility. There's really nothing that tells you he's there and when you're standing in line to sign in, there's a sign for a dermatology office and another for St. Clair Eye. We had to ask, "Are we in the right place?" So they took us back to a room within a few minutes - less than 30 minutes in the waiting area - and then... more waiting. We ended up waiting almost 2 hours and then finally someone came in and they admitted they totally forgot we were there. Ok, fine. They owned up to it and apologized, it's ok - we can move on from that. Dr. Mallempati was great, very thorough, and great bedside manner. He schedules an MRI and wanted us to come back after for a follow up. MRI was done and we return one week later. This time we saw him in his main location and thankfully, wait time was much better. His nurse practitioner saw us first and she was very thorough, but she interrupted us when we tried to tell her something and we had to make her listen. We saw Dr. Mallempati again, and he was great. He wanted us to schedule a nerve block which would be performed at Surgical Institute of Alabama. We immediately scheduled the nerve block for Dec 23rd, 2025 to be done at Surgical Institute, BUT they (Surgical Institute) would call us the day prior to confirm the time. No food or drink the day of the nerve block (prior to). Also, a 3 week follow up post-nerve block would be scheduled with Mallempati. December 22nd comes and by 3:30 p.m., we still had not received confirmation. We call Surgical Institute and the lady who answered the phone said, "What's your name? Oh yes, we have you down for tomorrow and they WILL be confirming this, but we're just really backed up. But you will hear something." We go to bed at 9 pm, still no word. December 23rd comes and we've taken vacation from work and are sitting here, waiting to hear. At 7:30 a.m., I call Surgical Institute and the lady who answered said rather rudely that that she had no idea what we were talking about, no appointment was scheduled for us. We repeated the story about how someone at her office said we WERE on schedule, and she kept repeating, "You need to call Mallempati's office - no one from there has ever sent us anything to do with your information." I called Tracy, Dr. Mallempati's nurse, and left a voice mail to PLEASE call us ASAP. By 9:30 a.m., we gave up hope and decided to eat/drink since obviously the nerve block wasn't happening. It's April 19th, 2026 and Tracy nor anyone else at OrthoAlabama Spine has yet to call us back. We've been completely ghosted by this facility, as if we were never there. We've told everyone we know to avoid this place - which is sad, because Dr. Mallempati is great.
