Ordered take out - butter chicken is my usual order. Ordering was easy Online, staff very friendly. I tried this because of good reviews, but I found the flavor just OK. What really disappointed was the portion size. In a full order of butter chicken there were only 8 dice-size chunks of chicken in tons of too-thin sauce. A 16$ order of butter chicken with sides extra should have had double the amount of meat in it. I'll be taking a pass on this next time I'm in town. read more

We LOVE spices! Hands down the only option we go to for Indian cuisine in Okotoks! Only downfall is the wait time, it's usually at least an hour to get food whether you're at home or in the restaurant (learned that the hard way starving and impulsively stopping in lol!). Hands down, one of the best places to get authentic Indian food in Alberta. The food was incredibly aromatic and well spiced, a far cry from the Indian franchises in Calgary that offer bland, and dry dishes. The only complaint I had was that the service was a bit on the slower side, but the staff are friendly, the food is great, and the ambience is lovely. If you want a pleasant dining experience accompanied by wonderful Indian cuisine, I highly recommend this place. It is definitely worth the drive out! read more

Okotoks is one of those places that I only visit because I have friends there. It's a separate town but is really no farther than some of the newest neighbourhoods in Calgary and actually takes me less time to get there. The town of Okotoks has certainly grown since the days I used to go fishing in the river, just off what was the one and only Main Street. Today it boasts a Costco and a population of over 26,000. Gone are the days where you couldn't even find a MacDonald's or Wendy's for a quick meal. Today it is home to many restaurants ranging from fast-food, family oriented to ethnic ones. Spices, East Indian Dining, is currently the only East Indian restaurant in Okotoks. The décor is warm and quite lovely in shades of earth tones. There is only one server there but he greets you enthusiastically and with a warm smile. The menu is broken down by Appetizers, Chef Specialities and then Traditional Dishes categorized by levels of spiciness, .tandoori, biryani, vegetarian dishes, and then rice and pulao and breads. Each Traditional dish in each level offers a choice of meat: lamb, chicken, beef, king prawn, and paneer. The restaurant states that their chefs come from New Delhi. We decide to try a couple of the Chef Specials and opted for Chili Chicken and Beef Kofta, and chose a vegetable dish: Navratan Korma. The Chili Chicken is actually a Hakka Indian dish reflecting the influence of the Chinese who have settled in India. It is fried chunks of chicken breast and then covered in a spicy sweet soya chilli sauce. I found the outsides of the chunks of chicken tough and had to use a knife to cut through. The sauce was tagged as spicy (i.e. the hotness) and had a nice heat to it but I would consider it mild for those of us accustomed to spicy food. The beef kofta were elongated beef meat balls in a curry sauce. I enjoyed the beef but the sauce needed a better balancing of flavours, it was a little too heavy in either tamarind or some other spice that I couldn't place. The Vegetable Korma was mixed vegetables in a thick creamy sauce. It was good but nothing to get too excited about. The sauce was a little too thick to my liking. Overall, as a Calgarian with access to many East Indian restaurants, I would rate Spices as average. The food was decent but certainly not worth a drive down just for the food. The prices were a little too high for the portions served. The average was about $15-16 for the classic dishes and $12 for vegetable dishes. The basmati rice was authentic basmati that is longer grain than the basmati most of us buy and the naan was very good. Service was efficient and excellent. The waiter was very helpful and since we were undecided as to levels of spiciness, he had the kitchen do up the three dishes in three levels of spiciness so that we could get a taste of each. Free Parking is plentiful as it is in a strip mall with a private lot. read more

I've now ate here twice. Something I don't often do before I do a review. I came once for supper and ordered off the menu and once for a lunch buffet. I'm not an educated East Indian food connoisseur so I must admit I kind of struggle ordering off the menus. The coconut rice was delicious as was the man bread. All 4 dishes we ordered were very good, but a little small. I typically enjoy the buffet because I get to taste different things that I simply cannot pronounce. This experience was no different. Every refill was a small portion which kept the buffet fresh. They had the typical tandoori and butter chicken as well as a few different items. This is a great way to enjoy a new cuisine if you are unfamiliar and a great place to eat if you know what your want to order. I will be back. read more

We arrived at 6pm with reservation. Sat down and we were 2 out of 4 other tables of 4 people. Waited 5 minutes for a menu, 10 minutes more for the server, only to tell us that they were out of coke and had no more beer. Okay we ordered drinks and our dinner. Why we stayed I do not know( well it was a first date so either one of us wanted to say anything) at 7:54 pm our dinner was served, not all of it but the rest was comming in about 10 minutes. We were told they were short of staff, then the we were told they ran out of food, but he said at least yours is fresh. ..compared to it not being ??. Told us to come back for free appitizer but during the week when it's slow. Good things okotoks has other options for India food. read more

A nice break from the usual, spices food is both flavorful and we'll priced. The portion sizes are more than adequate, which is unusual for your typical east Indian restaurants. I would recommend anyone looking for authentic Indian Cuisine in the area look no further than Spices. read more

We have been going to Spices since it opened late last year. The service is great, the guy who is always there remembers us and ask how our newborn is and are so excited to see us come back and happy to see our little one growing. The food is tremendous, so tasty and flavourful. The chef is able to make the food as spicy as you want it. If you are unsure about Indian food, we recommend the following: Pakoras, lamb samosas, butter chicken, lamb vindaloo, bombay fish, chicken masala, butter naan, basmati rice, king prawn tandori. You really cannot go wrong with any of the dishes they are all delicious. The only downside to Spices is the price and the quantity of food of the entrees, you can pretty much expect to spend about $60-80 for two on dinner not including drinks, taxes and tip. That being said we still highly recommend and enjoy going to Spices every once in awhile. read more

I cannot say enough about the wonderfully incredible aromas that I encountered when I stepped into this restaurant. They sent my senses into a whirlwind and it took quite awhile to determine from the various items on the menu just exactly what appealed to me at that particular time. The manager, Jas, was our server and he described many of the dishes and their flavors. My wife and I decided on the Jalfrezi with lamb. It was a perfect blend of tomatoes, onions, bell peppers, curry, almonds and raisins. After much discussion, we then added the Aloo Gobhi, cauliflower and potato veggie dish. We accompanied these dishes with the coconut rice and a double order of butter naan bread. Our wait was not extraordinarily long. The only part that seemed long was the anticipation due my taste buds salivating from all of the smells floating through the air from the kitchen!! Everything arrived together, and we immediately dove in. I consider myself a very good cook, and appreciate most of the meals that come out of my own kitchen. This meal overwhelmed my senses and I literally moaned with every bite and morsel that I placed into my mouth. Seriously, my friends were laughing because they had never seen me enjoy a meal in a restaurant quite this much! The service was fabulous! Food - not so great!! We tried a lot of food - it was a big group... Veg platter for starters - they forgot to salt / season the pakoras, so they were stodgy and tasteless without the chutney, which unfortunately lacked flavour too. Samosas had a very wet filling which is unusual but flavour wasn't too bad - the grease factor took over the platter though. Non veg. platter for starters - Again, pakoras had no seasoning, the lamb samosas were full of grease inside and outside, the Fish pakora on the other hand wasn't so bad but could do with some flavour into that too. Lamb Seekh kebabs were good - again, seasoning was a big hit and miss. Butter Chicken - gross disappointment. It had a lot of sugar, and I mean a LOT of sugar. You definitely won't need dessert after that one! Chilli Chicken - just imagine some chicken, large chunks of green peppers and onions drenched in sriracha, the really sweet chilli dipping sauce by Roosters and soy sauce. Overloaded with sriracha, Chicken Jaipuri - heat, just pure chilli heat but no flavour as in with the food or spices. Curries - portion size is ridiculously small for the price they are charging and they don't come with rice, its all extra. Naan bread is fabulous. The best thing I liked there! Peshawri naan is not a Peshawri naan its like a naan bread stuffed with sweet carrots for these guys. Don't waste your money on it! For $160 that we spent there today it was the worst Indian meal I have ever had in my life. read more

Me and my boyfriend went here for the first time tonight for dinner, it was more than we expected! The food was very flavourful and authentic (beef vindaloo & gao lamb with saffron rice and naan), good portions, and came out in good time. Our server, Jaskarn, was very friendly and helpful with our orders. I would definetly recommend this restaurant to someone looking to venture outside of the Okotoks chain restaurants. Yum!
