A Yelp review discusses not only the taste of the food at a restaurant, but the overall experience. That is why unfortunately I have to give this place three stars. I went with a group of classmates on a Friday night for some spicy Szechuan food, we got a variety of dishes including dandan noodles, mapo tofu, garlic roasted vegetables and some meat dishes. Let me preface this by saying the food was absolutely fantastic. I've been to a variety of similar restaurants around this area, and I thought the food here ranked above them. Sadly, the service was horrendous and put a damper on the dinner. Throughout the dinner we had to repeatedly ask for our white rice and for water refills, and at the end for our bill. I think it must've added a whole thirty minutes to our time there just because of how long it took us to flag down a server and for them to actually deliver. They seem understaffed and I am reluctant to bring anyone else to this place unless this has been fixed since my last visit. For now, I will have to return to my other usual haunts along Stony Brook road. read more

A super rare Long Island gem. High-level summary: you should visit this restaurant if you enjoy genuine Chinese food. Management seems nice and I can't imagine it's particularly easy opening this relatively niche restaurant in Centereach. The more diverse food options that can be supported to continue in the area, the better :) My review: first up, the aesthetics of the restaurant leave A LOT to be desired. I'm not going to beat around the bush about that. I have no idea what they're going for in terms of fitting out the restaurant, but hey, it's all part of it's strange charm I guess. The service is acceptable, but by no means, outstanding--even when you have two Mandarin speakers in your party. Anyways, what's more important is that food is, honestly, kind of really great. We had a range of dishes, and generally, I'd suggest staying away from the 'American Chinese' section of the menu and ordering the Sichuan dishes if possible. It's nice that they have both 'groupings' though--so you can cater to the less adventurous eaters you have in your group. We ordered some pretty straightforward dishes (mapo tofu, sweet and sour cucumber, kung pao shrimp, and shredded pork sichuan style etc) and they were all highly satisfying. I'm looking forward to going back to get the green beans and eggplant dishes--two Sichuan dishes I try to get whenever the opportunity arises. Bonus point: the chef migrated over directly from Chengdu to run the kitchen, and it was worth every cent getting him over here. We went on a Saturday evening at 8pm and there was no wait. No reservations needed (or potentially taken, as they never answered our calls that afternoon). For four people, we ordered about six entrees and two apps and paid $120 altogether. I love Szechuan Spicy Chicken, Kung Fu Fatty Beef, Jumbo Shrimp in Dry pot, Hand-Torn Cabbage, Beef Lo Mein, shredded Pork, Orange Chicken, Mongolia beef， Lobster!.....Everything Everything!!! It was very best authentic Chinese Sichuan cooking, the owner came from SiChuan Province(No wander)! The food is Authentic and delicious I will never go back other Chinese shops. Staff is super nice and hospitable. Newly decorated and has a nice trendy vibe. I came here hoping to dine in last week or so and they didn't have AC. They were doing some renovations, so we ended up getting take out. I ordered the fatty beef dry pot, orange chicken and cold chili chicken. Everything was great. It may be a long island thing, I don't know, but every asian place I've gone to that offers breaded deep fried food always has way too much breading to meat ratio. However, the flavor of the orange chicken was phenomenal. I can't wait to come back here. If their renovations still aren't done, don't let that deter you from this place. It is excellent. read more

Ordered lunch special for take out today. In the menu it says lunch special comes with seaweed egg drop soup, peanut, & rice. All I got was rice. I called to order Chongqing Spicy Chicken and when I got there within 10 minutes the takeout was already ready. The flavor was good but 1/3 of dish was dried red pepper??! After looking at their menu I'm not sure if I will come back here since comparing to Spicy Home Tasty their dishes are on average $2~5 more expansive. read more

Used to be my favorite Chinese restaurant near Stony Brook. They decreased the size of each plate but I was fine as the taste remained. However, last time we ordered 6 dishes and half of them is not that tasty. Maybe we ordered too many plates and the kitchen was preparing in such a hurry. We ordered pig trotters with chili peppers and green pepper corns, the best dish on the table but there are too few pieces of trotters- you have to fish them out among the copious amount chili peppers; fish fillet in chili. source (feiteng. yu)- flavorful and tender without too much oil as in most Szechuan restaurants; Hunan stir fried beef (Hunan xiaochao huangniu rou)- tasty but a bit tough; stir fried kidney- terrible, don't get this; garlic spinach- good complement to meaty and spicy food; pot stickers- good but nothing special; egg tofu- ok. The service needs improving with more attentiveness and details. Overall, it's a place we'll worth a visit. There are some other dishes we'd like to try and will definitely go back. read more

If you are into traditional Szechuan cuisine, this is the place for you. I mean really traditional. If you want American Chinese this is not the place to go. My daughter and I ordered four dishes. The first to come out were the spicy chicken wings. This dish looked like it would be incredibly spicy but it was so flavorful you got passed that. The plate was filled with slices of dried chili peppers and second joint wings. Great sauce, medium heat. The next dish was called fish fillet with spicy sauce. It was mild heat, great sauce and a large portion of fried fish fillets. A little heavy and light at the same time. The next dish we got came out with the fish, it was an unusual dish called hand ripped cabbage. It was a lightly braised cabbage in fish sauce and hot peppers. Incredible flavor. For those not familiar with fish sauce it's not fishy. Kind of like mild soy sauce with umami. This dish was wonderful because it cut the grease/fattiness of the fish dish. The last dish was the only one we were a little disappointed with. We ordered a dish called shredded pork with soybean paste. The pork was wonderful. We had seen pictures of this dish on the web site and it was served with bau buns which allowed you to make your own little folded pillowy sandwiches. Apparently they were out of the buns so the served it with tofu skins. They have the texture of rubber bathmats. We ate the pork without them. Can't wait to go back to try other things. Big note: point at things in the menu or show them pictures from the website as the English comprehension is not good at all. The actually use an electronic interpreting device but it's not infallible. read more

Absolute gem!!! Have been hoping for some truly authentic Szechuan food. The chef took so much pride in the food - and rightfully so. Had the sesame spinach which was Delicious and the stir friend eggplant with potatoes and green peppers - an absolute gem. Both of these dishes are not spicy and would be great for someone trying this regions cuisine for the first time - our favorite was the Szechuan chicken which was delicious; not too spicy and complemented the other dishes well. A gem in the neighborhood. This is the site of the old Yao's Diner . The place has been beautifully remodeled. The menu is as authentic as in Chinatown and for the less adventurous who don't relish pork knuckle or lamb with cumin (delicious) or wood ear fungus with chili pepper app( also v good ) they have American Chinese ( but why go there then?) The Mapo tofu was good if not a bit salty for me but i have low salt tolerance. My son enjoyed it. The food was good, pretty similar to what is was before when it was Yao's diner, but few things really threw me off. The music they played really didn't fit the atmosphere, mostly being pop culture songs that you'd hear at parties instead of restaurants normally. The food was good, what you'd expect from an authentic Chinese restaurant. If it were left at just that I'd give this 4-5 stars for keeping the place almost as it was before it changed. We got the bill. The food already being slightly more expensive than it usually is compared to places like Lol kitchen and grill but since it was fairly new I let it go. Now this is what I'm most displeased about: we're told to pay an extra 3% service charge if we used a credit card. Normally for restaurants like these you get a discount for paying in cash if you don't use credit card or you pay either way without getting any discounts at all. Instead for Spice Workshop you pay a 3% service charge for using a credit card and pay normally if you use cash. I don't even know what the service was that made it so special enough to have me pay an extra amount. I have other options if I wanted to go for authentic Chinese food, but it won't be at this location anymore. read more

This is the best restaurant if you are craving szechuan/hunan food. I have been looking for a good one around this area for so long and am glad that I found one. I especially like the sliced beef in a chili oil, xihu beef soup, and fillet fish with spicy sauce. The owner is kind, except the only caveat is she doesn't speak english so it might be hard when you are trying to order takeout via phone (i had to physically go there and point to the specific menus in order to communicate).
