The best indian restaraunt in the North East, good food, good service, cannot complain at all.

After a week of pub grub and clichéd British food, it was time for some curry. Yelp to the rescue!…read more We found Akbars just a few blocks from the train station, so it made a good stop after the National Railway Museum. I thought the dishes were fine quality, tasty and not too spicy. Good prices and good portions, suitable for sharing. Loved the atmosphere, with low lighting from chandeliers with red highlights and lounge music. It seemed more modern and hip than a standard Indian joint. The crowd was a mix of small groups of businessmen and tourists, with a few families like us.

Thanks, Adam! Wandering the streets after sightseeing, I let Yelp lead me to a top rated…read morerestaurant. I was not even slightly disappointed because Akbar's is an excellent curry house. Even though I walked in at 5:15, they were happy to see me and brought me to a table near the window. The menu was a bit strange - a solidly laminated sheet - but it had all the usual curries that I've come to expect in this country. And so instead of going with the usual, I let my eye choose. I started with the Liver Tikka. I've never had this before and I would recommend it. Not at all "livery", three good sized pieces arrived on a sizzling plate with some sauteed onions and a bowl of mint sauce. Th mint was a big help because this was seriously hot. Not spicy hot, temperature hot. Wow! For mains, the "handi" was listed as 'just like we have it at home' on the menu so I thought I'd give that a try. I chose lamb instead of chicken. It took about ten minutes (the waiter warned me it would be 15) and I also opted for two chapati to go with it. Again, very hot coming from the kitchen and it had a whole lot of flavor and spice, but it wasn't "hot" spicy just really tasty. Lots of small pieces of lamb in a sauce that is beyond description. Let's just say that it was excellent and the chapati was perfect for scooping. No dessert, but the cold bottle of Kingfisher was perfect (first time in a bottle, it's usually draft). A great meal!

Akbars - Family sized garlic naan. Enough for the family alright, or the family could use these bad boys for curtains.

OK, finding this place was a real challenge. I was visiting the area on business and asked google…read moreto find us a nice indian restaurant close by. After driving in circles a few times we saw the delivery entrance in an alley and parked at the first opportunity some distance away. We could see the place on the second story of a shabby abandoned shopping mall, but we couldn't work out how to get up there. We wandered around for quite some time looking for a way in, all the while getting increasingly frustrated and cursing like sailors. Finally we gave up, walked in through the delivery entrance and found ourselves in the kitchen. The visibly surprised cook we encountered didn't speak english, which is usually a good sign in my estimation. A nice young man who i summized was the manager appeared and shood us into the seating area. I later determined that you need to go to the very top floor of the car park and find a small unmarked door leading to the shops. A sign would have been a really nice gesture. I don't think visitors are very common (or particularly welcome) around here. Once we recovered from the misadventure, we did manage to get a really nice meal. There is an extensive menu and a full bar. Apparently there's a buffet on Thursdays for those who are into that sort of thing. The manager taking care of us was very nice, although notably disturbed about how many Bacardi and Cokes my travel companion was knocking back. I explained that we were from Wisconsin but i don't think he had encountered many Americans (probably because no out-of-towners could ever find the entrance). Everything was tasty and appeared to be freshly prepared. I was a bit surprised when i asked for a sweet lassi that it wasn't a thing there, nor was there any raita. They brought me a big bowl of yoghurt on the side so that was enough of a foil for my spicy lamb curry. My colleague ordered a mixed tandoori grill and he said it was quite good. I was surprised at the amount of food we were served and neither of us managed to find room to eat all of it. The bill was really quite reasonsble, especially considering the number of drinks on our tab All things aside i will definitely return next time i have to visit. I took one star off for the aggravation of having such a hard time finding our way in so maybe next time things will be less of an adventure.

It's good food, a meal typically costs in order of £9-12. The service is friendly a prompt. This is…read moremy second visit.
