Would give zero stars if I could!…read more Came for an early dinner with a friend and waited outside with the waiters for the owner to come and open the door. Let me preface my review by saying that I LOVE chicken tikka masala and have eaten it at over 100 different places around the world. So I was especially excited to try it in the UK as it actually is a British invention. Star of Bengal was highly recommended by a friend in Darlington who has tried all the local Indian restaurants. My dining companion was also referred there by his friend in London. The front page of the menu brags about winning the local curry contest in 1999 and nearly winning a national prize. So my hopes were quite high - before they were dashed. My dining buddy ordered a lamb dish at the suggestion of the waiter and I ordered chicken tikka masala. To say I was disappointed was an understatement. The dish was a dark red, almost like a vindaloo. And the taste was sweet - like a korma. I expressed my dissatisfaction to the owner and said the usual spices were missing and he quickly replied that all their dishes are mild. When I explained that I meant spices, like garam masala, not spicy heat and the dish was untypically sweet with a hint of coconut, he defensively told me that the chicken tikka masala was made it should be - with almond powder and coconut! He apparently has never tasted this menu item done properly and didn't attempt to apologize for the poorly executed dish. I suspect we arrived for dinner before the chef got there and the owner threw the dish together himself! If you want a proper chicken tikka masala in Darlington, the version at the food court inside the nearby Morrison's was quite good, with a good mix of spices and no almond or coconut. If the owner of Star of Bengal is reading this review, I highly suggest he follow this recommendation.

The Garden of India has been on the go for many years and has always maintained a very high standard indeed. It is a classy place with 5-star decor, service is 100% and food is top quality. The menu offers many exciting and different dishes as well as the norm but for king prawns this Indian is the best in town. In my opinion this is probably Darlington's best Indian with another one or two about on the same level.

I ordered a take away from them and now this is the ONLY place I order indian from. The quality of the food is exquisite. I understand that Baburchi is a restaurant however I only use the take away service. Food is always hot when it arrives, the tikka meals which are cooked in tandoor oven are a highlight. Our last order came with free salad, free sauce (like a mango and mint absolutely delicious), free popadoms, free curried veg side dish, and they even gave us a christmas card. Can't get enough of Baburchi, LOVE YOUR FOOD!

I've visited this restaurant three times now and on all occasions the restaurant does get busy, even on nights that tend not to be as busy as you would expect. It seems to have quickly gains some sort of good reputation and I think the fresh new decor, high back leather chairs and good quality food justly deserves this. However, as there are quite a few Indian restaurants now in Darlington, it would have been nice to have had a more modern contemporary menu with some different fusion style dishes, as I think this is something Darlington certainly lacks and would have brought a refreshing change to the town centre.

They do a good deal on Thursday, Friday and Sundays - 5 course special for £8.95 and they also do a similar off for these days for takeaways. The staff is extremely good and helpful. They don't do deliveries what is a little strange but if the order is £30 plus then they normally will deliver. Don't laugh as it's strange to mention but they make there own chips what are really good and because of this I can normally please most of the family. Overall this is a good Indian what offers some good deals and is one of my regulars.

The popularity of both the home orders and the restaurant is a testament to the quality of the food here and I would recommend this Indian restaurant to anyone to try. I've not been disappointed yet, but as I said I have usually missed the most busy times! If I have any negative comments, it would be that on a couple of occasions my lager was not chilled enough ;)
