Excellent food at very reasonable prices. If it's takeaway you're after then you'll be glad to know that delivery is usually pretty quick.

    Shwarma Fattoush - Mmm...hummus.

    Shwarma Fattoush

Driven by this place a million times, but never stopped in until recently. We ate at an odd time -…read moremaybe 2:30 pm on a Sunday, but it was still busy with nearly every table full, and people coming in regularly for takeaway sandwiches. On the plus side, the food was delicious. You can see the shawarma cooking when you come in, and it looks like real big hunks of meat, not gyro meat, which makes all the difference. We loved the mixed shawarma with hummus, and they kept bringing more warm bread for us to eat it with. The Fattoush Special Salad was also fab - fresh lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, parsley, mint, radishes, toasted bread, drizzled with pomegranate sauce and sprinkled with sumac. So much more flavorful and zesty than usual Middle Eastern salads, it was bright and beautiful. I wasn't sold on the Sambousek Lamb - more pastry than bread, they looked like little pre-bought pasties. Admittedly the filling was tasty, but they looked and tasted like they weren't homemade, and just weren't as exciting. I did enjoy the crispy falafels though. We may have also gotten meatballs, I can't remember them - but either way I know we were stuffed, and really impressed by and large with the freshness and quality. Service left a lot to be desired - slow and confused. Sat for ages before ordering, took forever to get water, that kind of thing. They're understaffed, servers were running around like crazy, they couldn't keep up! Sort of felt for them, rather than being too angry. But don't go here if you don't want to linger. It's a great little neighborhood cafe, diverse clientele, everyone from couples to friends to families. We're already planning to come back again soon.

But my husband and I hope Alsham does a bit better, because we had a really nice lunch here over the weekend. It wasn't busy when we arrived around noon, but over the next few hours more and more people came in. Service was very friendly, and they brought us some free, freshly fried falafel for a little amuse-bouche - how lovely! They were impossibly crispy, hot and delicious. We didn't order them, but you should. We did order the hummus beirutty - chickpea puree with chili, parsley, tahini, and lemon juice. Like a hummus, but with a more concentrated flavor and a kick of spice. There wasn't much of it - not the usual big bowl - but it was enough to keep us full along with the main courses. And they brought lots of fresh, hot bread - the bread was all puffy from the oven when it hit the table. We shared a mixed grill - you can see the meat cooking on the charcoal when you walk in, sooooo tempting - with lamb cubes, chicken cubes, and kofta kebab. All very tender, juicy, and flavorful. You have to order rice, but they brought us free garlic sauce and chili sauce. We busily started making little sandwiches out of the bread, hummus, and meat - every bite was great. The okra mezze was nice too instead of a salad - served in a creamy, fragrant red sauce. So much food! Didn't seem like too much but we could barely finish it. I think it was just over £10 per person for all that and we were stuffed. We love this kind of food, and they do it well here. We'll definitely be back!

Ideal choice if you're looking for somewhere more casual and laid back as you won't find any Geordie Shore wannabes in here. Funky cocktail menus either in retro cassette tapes or comic books, random art work draping the walls and a foosball table in the back give it a trendy hipster vibe. Try hiring out the 'snug' room if there's a small group of you and definitely check out the bar and outdoor terrace upstairs! I'm told they have a good selection of draught and bottled beers and the prices seem reasonable! Bar snacks...check! Free WiFi...check! Friendly bar staff...check! What more could you want?! I actually really like the venue... it's almost like three in one, and to write it off based on the downstairs entrance view would be a shame. That said, you can hang in that area if you prefer standing around the bar, find a cozy seat somewhere downstairs, have a seat with a group of friends in a larger area upstairs, or past the second bar upstairs out back where there's some large benches, space heaters, etc., outside. I haven't been out back since the proper cold has set in, but definitely put this place on your list of places to go for the nicer months if you like quirky interiors. I may be committing blasphemy here, but while their menu is awesome (comic book style) and the drinks inventive, Optimus Rye (priceless!), I'm still looking for "my drink" here... I did have a moment where I drank their weekend slushy machine dry, but those flavours rotate out and the potency varies. This said, I'm still going with five stars for these guys because I'm certain "my" drink is there... I just need to find it. (Most I've sampled have been too far one way or the other on the sweet scale for me personally, but try and try again I say!) Besides, they will make the standard requests and have a selection of beers, etc., it just feels a shame to go that route with a fun menu such as theirs. The staff have always been friendly which is another plus, and despite not being far away from the madness of the town centre (it's about one street over) it often escapes the pure madness that abounds in Newcastle... if you're after that madness perhaps deduct a star, if you want an a decent cocktail bar that escapes it however then this may just be your place.
