The building has always been impressive with three floors and raised seating the owner has outdone himself with huge trees and twinkling fairy lights. The food and drinks menu has been well thought out, clear and concise its not huge but I like the idea that they have picked a few dishes that they will do very well! The service in here started off a little on the shaky side having seated someone else in our seats we were a bit unnerved to see them move people for the the last booth in the raised area. Although it was explained those seating areas were for food only and the people who were moved were only having drinks... Moving swiftly on we were talked through the menu on what was a suitable amount for starter and main etc. We ordered a selection of starters to share; the prawn dynamite sushi was tasty although reading the menu you would think you get a selection of the six offered you do have to choose one as it is handmade to order - nice touch! Next was the spring rolls with duck which were very good with more flavour than your ordinary vegetable variety! My favourite was the pork and prawn dim sum -arriving in a basket to keep them warm they were amazing! Cooked to perfection the rice paper was thin and the pork went so well with the fish. Served with a very hot chilli dip it gave it the kick it needed! Next was the tricky decision between the thai red curry or the monkfish. On recommendation I went for the monkfish (which isn't explained on the menu in detail but is in fact small bites of fish breaded!) served with rice or chips. The curry sauce dip on the side was refreshing and light and the sticky rice came served in the lotus leaf -again a nice touch! I wouldn't normally have went for a fish dish but the waitress had excellent knowledge of the menu which I liked! We finished the meal off with some coconut ice cream and some sake - again something I hadn't tried. Served in a jug and warmed through it was good - definitely worth giving it a go! With one final cocktail for the road - the Guava Royale is one I would recommend I will definately be coming back to try my thai curry! 5* for service - from drinks to food tips and a great atmosphere for a relaxed evening out!

Situated in the area know as China town in Newcastle. 10 of us attended, and total bill with selection of starters, mains, and drinks: £247.00. Attentive staff. Extremely busy with local Chinese. I have long discounted this as some form of standard, but that was the clientèle. All the food was tasty and well presented. My only main complaint: Plate to eat of were extremely cold; as were the plates on which the food was served. This meant that the food went cold very quickly. Given the chosen starters, I think we feasted too soon before the mains. I had the Kung Po Chicken, and it didn't contain much chicken. However, other dishes of other people were quite ample, especially the fish. Would I go again, yes, maybe, but I'd have to make a comment that the food needs to be on hot plates. I did mention the situation, and the waiter was surprised , and said that they'd make sure next time.... So who made the mistake? Forgot to mention that the menu is like an encyclopaedia, and as thick as a book.

There is a main bar area, and a slightly enclosed area to sit, presumably when your table is ready (not sure if they do takeaways). If you face the bar, to the left are a series of booths. When two of us arrived, we struggled to get any service at the bar, and clearly there was an extremely loud group in the main part of the restaurant (about 35 blokes). There was also a hen-party in too, but they were less noisy. Let me make it clear, no restaurant can afford to turn away 35 paying customers. However, I learnt that there was an upstairs' area, and this would have been the best place to have accommodate this sort of number. However, I suspect that they were short of staff this evening; as we were struggling to get attention. They knew they had this booking!!! One colleague said if he had arrived, on his own, he would have walked out. The rest of our party arrived, and our compliment was a total of 5. We sat in the waiting area having a drink, and was assured of being seated soon. I had to chase this up. We then taken to a table with a few feet of the noisy throng. Fortunately, within 10 minutes they moved to the bar and seating area; carry their basket containing bottles of beer. THE DRINKS ARE VERY EXPENSIVE, I THOUGHT, AND COLLEAGUES SEEMED TO CONCUR. The food: Salt and Chilli King Prawns - £6.75 Stir-fried with Five-Spice and Chilli I enjoyed, and very succulent, and I enjoyed the spice and garlic. The star dish from two colleagues was: Spicy Lamb (A Buddha favourite) - £13.95 Thinly sliced and cooked with Five-Spice, Chilli, Cumin and Steamed Buns. I shan't return. So far so good, but the elements that let this restaurant down are the following: - speed of service - food - customer service - price You might be thinking "that's everything apart from location and decor"... and you'd be right. We only ordered two main courses (smallish servings which most probably have pre-prepared ingredients) but we found we waited for around 30 mins or more to see them arrive. When we dugg in, the salt levels in one of the dishes was just completely overwhelming. Our tongues were literally humming with the sodium in the food. We were in a rush to see a movie on the other side of town, so the dish was not sent back. Instead I mustered the courage to eat most of it - else it would have gone back immediately. We complained as we were asking for the bill, but the waiter just nodded his head and didn't give much of a response at all. Similarly, when the manager came over to take our payment she did not mention the issue at all. Instead it was swept under the rug and left there presumably to fester for the next unexpecting guest. Which brings me on to the final point - price. The most expensive main course is around £18 and the least expensive main course is about £10. I can get a much better tasting, much larger meal just a block down at "Utong" which is a Thai restaurant with seafood and hotpot as its speciality. What you end up paying for is the relatively different interior and not much else. To be completely fair, if Barn Asia's food had much less salt in it, it would taste delicious. If you find the menu a bit confusing, the staff are very helpful, and knowlegable if it's advise you're after. As some of the best bars in town are near the Central Station, and this isn't too far from there, it would be a great place to start a good night out with friends.

The meat inside the soup dumpling is alright, without much distracting additions like herbs etc., yet sometimes it should be a bit more refined, as in, softer to chew meat. That would make it a more luxurous experience. Price wise these soup dumplings are very expensive at £8,50 per 8, with a regular size of around 4 cm intersection.
