The building has always been impressive with three floors and raised seating the owner has outdone himself with huge trees and twinkling fairy lights. The food and drinks menu has been well thought out, clear and concise its not huge but I like the idea that they have picked a few dishes that they will do very well! The service in here started off a little on the shaky side having seated someone else in our seats we were a bit unnerved to see them move people for the the last booth in the raised area. Although it was explained those seating areas were for food only and the people who were moved were only having drinks... Moving swiftly on we were talked through the menu on what was a suitable amount for starter and main etc. We ordered a selection of starters to share; the prawn dynamite sushi was tasty although reading the menu you would think you get a selection of the six offered you do have to choose one as it is handmade to order - nice touch! Next was the spring rolls with duck which were very good with more flavour than your ordinary vegetable variety! My favourite was the pork and prawn dim sum -arriving in a basket to keep them warm they were amazing! Cooked to perfection the rice paper was thin and the pork went so well with the fish. Served with a very hot chilli dip it gave it the kick it needed! Next was the tricky decision between the thai red curry or the monkfish. On recommendation I went for the monkfish (which isn't explained on the menu in detail but is in fact small bites of fish breaded!) served with rice or chips. The curry sauce dip on the side was refreshing and light and the sticky rice came served in the lotus leaf -again a nice touch! I wouldn't normally have went for a fish dish but the waitress had excellent knowledge of the menu which I liked! We finished the meal off with some coconut ice cream and some sake - again something I hadn't tried. Served in a jug and warmed through it was good - definitely worth giving it a go! With one final cocktail for the road - the Guava Royale is one I would recommend I will definately be coming back to try my thai curry! 5* for service - from drinks to food tips and a great atmosphere for a relaxed evening out!

Interior is very swanky for Newcastle - looks like the kind of place you find in a much bigger city. You don't need to dress up, but you certainly good. A stylish, dimly light atmosphere with colourful touches all around. I started with a cocktail, the delicious (and pretty big!) Sohe Collins, which has rose-petal infused gin, elderflower syrup, rose soda water, and lemon juice, and is basically everything I like in a drink. So pretty and pink too! £6.95 for that, so quite good price really given the size and the hand-crafted nature of it. Took a while for the drinks to come, but they are all unique and clearly somebody is thoughtfully preparing them behind the bar. The three of us split the fried squid and soft shell crab for a starter, along with prawn crackers. These were £5.50 and £8 respectively. All were very lightly breaded and fried, maintaining a crisp exterior, and served with variety of yummy sauces and even a seasoned salt to sprinkle over. Attention was certainly paid to presentation, with all the dishes looking beautiful on the plate. Then I went with the North Thai Yellow Chaing Rai, a curry with breaded pork, prawns, spinach, edamame, and green beans. It was a bright yellow curry, not terribly spicy, a very big portion! For £16.50 you'll be very full, I couldn't finish it. I found it a bit salty, but all the vegetables were fresh, the meats were cooked very well, and the presentation was lovely. Everyone found their meals very tasty, it's definitely a cut above your average restaurant. Tone down the salt, and it would be even better! Service was friendly, and it's a great place to go for a slightly more upscale night out.

My only main complaint: Plate to eat of were extremely cold; as were the plates on which the food was served. This meant that the food went cold very quickly. Given the chosen starters, I think we feasted too soon before the mains. I had the Kung Po Chicken, and it didn't contain much chicken. However, other dishes of other people were quite ample, especially the fish. Would I go again, yes, maybe, but I'd have to make a comment that the food needs to be on hot plates. I did mention the situation, and the waiter was surprised , and said that they'd make sure next time.... So who made the mistake? Which brings me on to the final point - price. The most expensive main course is around £18 and the least expensive main course is about £10. I can get a much better tasting, much larger meal just a block down at "Utong" which is a Thai restaurant with seafood and hotpot as its speciality. What you end up paying for is the relatively different interior and not much else. To be completely fair, if Barn Asia's food had much less salt in it, it would taste delicious. Some dishes have alternative versions, based on the different cooking styles of different Asian countries. But the food is not only interesting, it is also of very high quality. If you find the menu a bit confusing, the staff are very helpful, and knowlegable if it's advise you're after. As some of the best bars in town are near the Central Station, and this isn't too far from there, it would be a great place to start a good night out with friends.
