My wife and I were referred to SPG by a structural inspector and Matthew came out to take a look at our basement and detached garage for some repairs. In the basement, the 3 support posts under the main carrying beam needed to be replaced as they were doing very little to support our old house. Also, a steel beam held up by two new posts would need to be installed for joists that definitely was buckling under the weight of walls on the main floor. This required massive work and concrete footers to hold all that weight. Our terrible basement stairs also had to be destroyed and replaced with ones that were sturdy and as close to code as possible. In the garage, there was very little that was keeping the roofing and walls from eventually collapsing. It required anchor bolts to the footer, new sill plates in some places and 3 long sections of beams to support the rafters and keep the walls and roof structurally intact. The entire process went smoothly and Matthew was up front about pricing, timing and any minor problems that came up. The work is top notch and my wife and I are very happy we were able to use one company to handle quite a lot of work. If we ever need major repairs in the future I'll definitely see if it is something Matthew and his team are able to handle before looking anywhere else. Thanks a bunch! read more

We hired this company to put in a deck and it was an absolutely nightmare. They we unprofessional, disrespectful, condescending and threatening. Construction mistakes: -poured footers in the wrong location -made the landing too short for stairs -cut posts for rails too short because of landing being too short -used nails to secure treads instead of screws -deck wobbles (we have to have someone else come secure it) -insecure posts for rails -stairs end on uneven ground (which he claims we okayed but that is untrue) -fascia board not attached to stringers (which he claims we okayed but that is untrue). -cigarette butts in our yard Some of the things they said to us were: "I wouldn't want this sh*t on my house" (in front of our two year old. "I can only speak to your husband" "I didn't want to come today!" "I hate composite decks" "I'll laugh at you when I hang up" "Your perspective holds no weight over mine so I'm not going to discuss that with you" "You have deep rooted issues" "I don't like you!" (X4) "I will take you to court" (so many times I lost track.) There is so much more I would like to say but there isn't enough space so I'll say this working with Matthew was honestly a nightmare, we have never come across someone so condescending and nasty. It's obvious that he lacks the respect of his crew and is simply trying to assert his dominance in any other area he can. I cannot express how much I regret hiring him for our project. We spoke with a lawyer who said we have a case against them for breach of contract, shoddy craftsmanship and unreasonable delays; but please hear me when I say no amount of monetary reimbursement would be worth having to deal with Matthew for another second. If you do decide to work with this company I highly recommend having a lawyer on retainer and recording every conversation you have with Matthew because he simply cannot be trusted. read more

We hired Matt and SPG construction to build a relatively simple 12X15 composite deck with stairs going down to our walk-out basement. We were told it would be about five weeks to start and two weeks to complete the project. Due to circumstances both in and out of SPG's control (hiring a "notoriously slow" architect, waiting on the city, not ordering squared edge boards for the stairs, pouring footers in the wrong place, not pouring concrete on a perfect Friday to let it set over the weekend, etc.) the project took around three months to complete as opposed to less than two. I'll try to stick to some of the main pain points we encountered, but I apologize if I get sidetracked. We first met the foreman, Bill, when he had to move some of the composite boards into the garage. He said to my wife and infront of our young daughters that he "wouldn't want this S***" on his house. He was insulting the product we chose and cursing in front of our children at the same time which became pretty common. We also had him awkwardly yelling at his coworker infront of our family when we were all outside and one day when my wife tried to explain some of the specifics we wanted to him he was condescending and disrepectful to her demanding to speak to me and saying things like how he hates composite and how he didn't want to come in to work that day. He also left nails throughout our yard and his coworker left cigarette butts in the yard. Matt made a decent first impression, but the relationship fell apart severely. Before they built the landing for the halfway point of the stairs going down they thankfully realized the concrete footers were poured in the wrong spot, so they poured a couple new ones, let them set, then built the landing for the stairs. Since Matt did not realize they made squared edged composite boards, we had to wait for those to come in for the stairs. while waiting, Matt pushed for us to pay 2/3 of the final payment that was supposed to be due upon project completion. When we asked that we wait until the project is completed due to concerns about the quality of the work being done, Matt became aggressive threatening to take us to court and saying things like "I don't like you" and "I'll laugh at you" when this conversation is over. We agreed to pay half instead and the rest when the project was completed. Once the boards for the stairs finally came in, our concerns over the work being done ended up being warranted as the platform for the stairs was still too close to the main deck, but the platform had already been built. We could either wait until SPG had an opening in their schedule and have them try getting it right on their third try by tearing down that structure and rebuilding, or we could have two taller posts making that part of the deck look awkward and take a small credit off final payment. Given how the relationship had soured, we opted for the latter as we had no idea how long it may have taken for them to come back and if they would even get it right on the third try. When trying to resolve this final issue we offered to let Matt walk away without the rest of the final payment and he said "only if we leave on good terms" threatening us not to leave a negative review which felt pretty gross. When we took a couple hours to try to decide what to do I got an email from Matt stating he was filing a lien on our house. If it's not clear from everything we went through with Matt and his team at SPG, steer clear of this company. These are not people you want to work with. read more

The team at SPG Construction was fabulous to work with in determining scope and time for project. They came in and provided an excellent assessment on a roof and deck project. We are completely satisfied with the end result. SPG always kept us up-to-date on the timeframe and construction steps. Always responded to questions and on the go changes from our end.
