We've used multiple kennels in the past, changing either due to our work patterns or because the kennel wasn't a good fit. I can safely say that Spencer Kennel is the best one we have ever used. Our dogs were very well cared for (including one with diabetes that required 2x daily insulin injections) and looked great when we picked them up today. We'll be back in the future. We adopted a puppy here over 4 months ago and he's a doll. The adoption fee is reasonable ($150 which includes shots and getting the dog fixed). We were treated just fine on that day but one lady bad mouthed other potential owners left and right saying things like "They're crazy if they think I'm going to let them walk out of here with a pet. They're too young/poor/have kids/etc." which is just unprofessional. When we took our puppy back in for his shots, they couldn't find our paperwork anywhere so they made a post-it note to record his last booster, saying they'd add it to his file when they found it. They gave me a post-it note with the info as well. A few months later, we called to schedule his neutering and they chided us for not doing his booster (obviously they never added the post-it note to his paperwork and thankfully I kept it to show them). They told us to drop him off at 7:30am and pick him up the following day by 7pm. The morning of (yesterday), I start getting phone calls at 7:05 and 7:10 with a very rude woman snapping at me about why our dog isn't there yet and repeatedly hanging up on me! (My husband was on his way and got there by 7:20...10 minutes earlier than what they'd told us). She called my husband and did the same. Apparently, the staff (much of which is volunteer) mixed up the times and drop off is at 7, pickup at 7:30 but she wouldn't even let my husband explain. She snatched our dog from him and stormed out the door. Does she love animals? Yes, I really believe she does. But she's also incredibly rude and unprofessional and apparently doesn't realize the impact word of mouth can have on a business. It's too bad since we're very loyal customers to business/causes that are kind and professional. read more

I love Spencer Pet Rescue for the great work they do taking in homeless dogs and cats and finding them homes. I adopted my two dogs from Spencer. Spencer is very easy to work with, and adoption was a breeze. Of course, you need to submit an application and be chosen as a match to get your new pet. They post their available pets on PetFinder so you can look over the animals available for adoption before coming for a visit. I haven't used Spencer Kennel's boarding services yet, but I'll update if I do. read more

This place is disorganized, the facilities are subpar, and what kind of business they really are is questionable. If I understand correctly, they are attempting to be a non-profit and a regular fit-profit business at the same time. As far as I can see they are failing at both! I wanted to use the dog training services of Kranky K9 and was informed that is I wanted for my dog to be in their full-time program, he would have to stay each night at Spencer. I went there and asked for a tour of the facilities so I could see where my dog would be housed. The attitude from the person at the desk seemed to be that I was asking for something unusual. She called in a very young girl who took me back to one kennel area. The whole place was very crowded, noisy and the building looked in need of renovation. I was not happy about leaving my dog there but we had signed a training contract and had already paid for a vacation cruise. When I came back to drop my dog off, I had to insist on seeing a responsible adult to give them information about the ear infection my dog had and how to properly administer the medication. I stressed that it was VERY important it was instilled in his ears each day so as to continue the healing process. I left a typed sheet with clear instructions on how to do this. I was very suspicious about the competence of their "staff". I asked a friend who is also a veterinary technician to check on him a few days later. My dog's ears were much worse and there was no evidence the medication was used. When she asked the person in charge, they lied and said it had been done. She took my dog back to my vet who confirmed the treatment was not done. So I had another vet bill, pay for more medication, and to pay my friend to go every day and treat him until I got back. I told them I knew they had lied and I would never leave my dog there again. I also told Kranky K9 what happened. I understand they are no longer recommending Spencer to their clients. I did not have my dog groomed so I do not know the quality of their service but I would not leave my dog in their care for ANY amount of time. read more

Let me start by saying I use to take my very important family member to a different groomer and had some very bad experiences. Brady is a shin tzu, so he has to be groomed or his hair will just grow till it matts up. After reading about many places and asking people about their personal experiences we ended up at Spencer's. What a great time my puppy had. He becomes very nervous when not with our family and freaks out if put in a kennel. The staff took extra time with him and made sure he felt safe and happy. This means the world to me, Brady is a much older dog. We have added a new member to the family that cam from a rescue and have now also trusted Spencer's with him. I would recommend them to anyone with a pet that is a family member. They truly love animals and want the best for them. read more

My dog came back with wounds and they tried to blame it on me. Didn't get groomed by the groomer, but just bathed by one of the employees. Don't offer day camp atmosphere, in a kennel by herself for days. Very unhappy. read more

Zero stars. Wanted to adopt a cat and went in with my family. Here's what we got: We only do adoptions AND viewings for two hours a week on a certain day. You can't look or anything except for these two hours. What a joke. I guess they don't want many adoptions. As to the below response: Adoption hours are for two hours a week. The reason listed is because of low manning? How can that possibly be for the benefits of the animals or customers. Very poor and conflicted reasoning. Dumpster with extreme pet feces smell by the front door. It might be a good idea to move it somewhere else, ya think? Maybe to the rear away from the FRONT door where ALL customers enter? It appears the manager/owner was more offended by my pointing out is the issues than having any interest in learning and changing them. Even less stars for this response. read more

I chose this kennel for boarding my dogs while I was out of town over the weekend because it has the best reviews on Yelp and also because my neighbors on NextDoor all recommend Spencer. Let's just say it is not quite what I expected. The place is a mess. The kennel portion is a lot like the humane society, or a dog jail. They're currently under construction which could've caused some of the confusion I will describe in detail as follows. The staff was very friendly but quite unorganized. They didn't ask for our dogs paperwork (shots etc) when we dropped them off. Our dogs are up to date on everything but that is slightly concerning considering other dogs may not be. Just seemed like something that was forgotten about, no big deal. We asked for a few extras like play time and grooming. When we picked up our pets there was no way to know what had been done grooming wise, or whether they had actually been taken out to play like we asked/paid for. In fact, the woman asked us what the dogs had done and charged us for it rather than having her own records to go off of. I can only know what I requested, not what actually happened while I was away. I thought maybe they would have a list of things that had been done that they could refer to for billing. I also had to ask several times to get the ten percent discount that is on the website. I was never offered a punch card like other customers (showcased in yelp pictures). I thought it was a little crazy that I paid more to board my 2 dogs than I did for a airbnb for 2 nights. It cost almost $300 for my 2 dogs to stay a couple nights at Spencer Kennel and both get baths. I think I will take my chances on a different place next time, or try to travel with my pets instead. My experience wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. I think that if the staff was a little more organized it would've went a lot smoother. Be forewarned they also don't take American Express! Have another card on hand for payment. This place isn't bad but considering other kennels in the area have much more plush spaces to host your pets and some even have better prices and other amenities (webcams, progress reports etc) there are just other options to consider, ones I will certainly be checking out for next time. read more

When I went back to this kennel to pick up my dogs, they were very busy. I went back with the employee to take my dogs home. If I would have gone back there first, I would have NEVER left my dogs there. There were mice feces in some kennels, there was a mouse running in the long open drains, and my dogs toys and chews were still in the little red bucket. When I saw the mouse, the employee made light of this by saying "they are house pets." Nice try. They did not take care of my dogs or the chew treats would have been gone. It's hard to review Spencer Kennel and Rescue. They work very hard and appear to have a genuine caring and concern for animals. And God knows - they make a difference in the lives of thrown away, abused, and dumped dogs and cats of the metro east, as well as the puppy mill dogs they take, rehab, and adopt out. But the place is like a dysfunctional family. When they're not verbally attacking customers, they're undercutting each other and the volunteers. Some how the place operates despite the hormonal emotional roller coaster rides of the daughter and mother team that run the place. The daughter has no idea how to share the praises when they do come in. Instead it's all "I", "I", "I", and "ME", 'ME', "ME" with her. She is incapable of thanking volunteers for their work and routinely takes personal credit for what they've done for the animals and for the kennel itsel. Even worse she frequently talks about this one or that one - in front of the customers and what appear to be staff and other volunteers. Apparently she's never heard the term "There's no 'I' in team," or if she has - she doesn't understand what it means. Nor does she seem to grasp the intrinsic value of volunteers. The mother routinely goes off about one group or another. Most recently - it was military members who adopt and return the animals they previously swore to be there for - forever. I'm not saying she's wrong...the problem with far too many military members adopting and then dumping their animals is long standing. But we're not all cut from the same cloth and cringe when responsible, caring, and committed military pet owners are thrown under the bus with the lot of irresponsible, awful members that we deplore as much as she does. If you say something negative on their FB page, it will either be met by an attack or quietly and quickly removed. That's all fine and good - IF THEY EVER GOT THE MESSAGE AND CHANGED THEIR APPROACH. Many of the staff could use some sensitivity training - but it would probably be a waste of time and money. All that being said - the volunteers there are amazing - and I don't understand how they keep going back - but they do - despite the drama. Those volunteers make this place diamond. My dog has always been well cared for at this kennel. I'd recommend it to any friend - but always along with a warning about the lack of professionalism by the mom and daughter team. read more

The staff at Spencer Kennel is friendly, the facility is very clean and their love for all animals is evident in everything they do. Additionally, I greatly respect the significant effort they put forth in the name of homeless, abused and neglected animals. The facility is clean and there are a lot of pets to adopt. However, I could not believe how rude I was treated by the woman at the front desk. When I mentioned that our dog was not neutered she came unglued and started yelling at my wife and I. I'll never go back. We use Spencer Kennel for our furry family members when we need to go out of town. I was surprised that the second time we used them they remembered our pets names and temperament. They even recommended separate lodgings for our cats since our youngest was a little to aggressive for our laid back cat. And they noticed our laid back cat was not enjoying the living arrangements. First, I took my two chihuahuas there for just 3 days. They came home with diarrhea. They were fed kennel food and not their own. I complained to a young woman there and she assured me all was well. WHAT? All is well? No... my dogs have diarrhea. As I complained to my neighbor, she said, "yes, and its funny how the kennel owner takes credit for positive comments on the Rescue's good adoptions but blames the Rescue for bad Yelp reviews. Cant have it both ways deary. I will be finding somewhere else to go. If you love your dogs, you will find somewhere else. read more

We have boarded our dog here on a few occasions and will continue to do so. The volunteer staff is very friendly and cares about the animals that come in. There has always been someone at the desk when we arrived to drop off or pick up to make the process as quick as possible. Each dog has it's own run based on the size of the dog (small or large). You bring the food. I believe they have an option to pay a little extra for any additional one-on-one time, but we have never done that. For any of you that are military, they do provide a discount to you, which is always nice and appreciated. They also gave us a "punch card" at our last visit, which if we fill up we get a free night. :) The only thing that threw me off, and it's definitely not a negative, more of a heads up, was all of the cats roaming around in the office. I am not a cat person so I hid my fear, but only one kept coming up to me and he was friendly. My sister is deathly (NOT exaggerating) allergic to cats so I had to warn her to stay in the car instead of coming in to say goodbye. The funny thing is our dog doesn't like other dogs, but he didn't even care about all of the cats! read more

10/5/2017 I must say, I have not had a lot of contact with this Kennel but the little I have has been EXCELLENT. Last night a rather large dog wandered into our yard. Tired, older, dirty and hungry. The only tag was Spencer Kennel's tag. NO OWNER TAG!! Very irresponsible in my opinion. I called Spencer Kennel and within 10 minutes someone picked her up. They did not know who she belonged to at that time, or if she was micro chipped but they very kindly came for her since she had on one of their tags and they did not want anything to happen to her even though they were not boarding her. They located the owner as this has happened before and they were reunited. I thought it was really really decent of this Kennel to worry about a dog they were not even boarding and to come and get her! It would be great if the owner could get a tag for this sweet girl but I sure like how Spencer Kennel is looking out for animals in the Ofallon/Shiloh area. Really they went above and beyond. Thank you so much to the people at Spencer Kennel and Pet Rescue. They are awesome. It is so obvious how much the care for each and every animal there. They are so dedicated to their cause and thee welfare of the animals. Apparently my puppy and her brother were brought to tbem with worms, fleas and parvo (a parasite that usually kills puppies). They literally nursed them back to health. Their three siblings were taken to another shelter and none of them survived. If you're looking for a rescue pet, check with Spencer. read more

My family went there today to look at a certain dog. The lady went and got him for us. We spent a little time with him and decided to pass ( this was the first place my family went to once they decided they wanted to adopt a dog). I asked if they had any other dogs we might be interested in. They mentioned another dog but another family was there to look at it as well. So we decided to hang out and see what they brought out (all they said was a small breed dog with a short coat). Well once they brought it out my dad wanted to pass because it wasn't something he would be interested in. They tried to force us in the play yard with another family to look at the dog but I told them we would pass. At the time the front desk women was rude as f*** and said "gosh you only looked at her for 3 seconds" and something about wasting there time. She was a complete b***h. This was the first place we went since my family had to put there beagle down a month ago and it took them a while to decide to adopt and this lady chastized them. I don't normally have my dogs groomed, but considering that this has been a particularly hectic two months and my dogs had gotten filthy, I thought it was time for a change. Spencer Kennel did a fantastic job with my two dogs! They are cleaner than they have been in years! They were so friendly, and welcoming, and were great with my two dogs.
