I fondly recall in the late '80's having a 16-ounce Knickerbocker bottle with a cheeseburger cooked right in front of you. The Knickerbockers may have faded into oblivion, but the food, atmosphere, and friendly, courteous service at this slice of Americana are still present and first-rate. Gone are the once legendary Gardner spots like Stanley's Lunch, but it's great to still have the Paramount and a short walk away, the Blue Moon Diner. Highly recommend.

This weekend while traveling back from the Boston area we were in the need of a pit stop as well as…read morea coffee. We decided to stop in at this Dunkin Donuts location because it seemed conveniently located near the highway. This was truly the case which made it easy to get off and on the highway again. When we walked into the shop the place was packed but the staff did a great job of getting people in and out. The employees here were very polite and were quick at getting items made. The one minor issue with this store was that the dining area itself was a little messy, but it was obviously because there were so many people in the shop. In the end the coffee and experience was decent, the bathrooms were clean and we were able to get on the road fairly quickly. The next time we are traveling to Boston we will make it a point to stop here if we need a cup of Joe on the go.

The Scandinavian almond cupcake is a bit sweet for me but has a strong almond flavor. You can find a variety of local food , Scandinavian, and other gifts at the store too. It's a nice place to get a gift on the way to visiting someone. They have dairy products and other perishables as well. There's some outdoor seating at the store and the abundance of flowers outside was a nice touch. I guess, hence, the Kitchen Garden... Service was friendly and helpful. I wished they had some limpa or Finnish rye, but I came pretty late in the day. Maybe I'll try the ice cream sometime, though it's from Bliss over in Attleboro, which is closer to Boston. This general store is a nice stop along Route 2.

(My mother [and aunt, and uncle] grew up in Gardner, and my grandmother still lived in town until her recent passing.) Anyhoo, I know what you're thinking -- what can one say about a Dunkin store that hasn't already been said? But as someone without access to DD on a regular basis -- at least until 2015, when they finally come back to California -- I can safely say that their donuts are yummy, their iced coffees and Coolattas delightful (as well as a needed jolt of caffeine in a somewhat sleepy [I use that term with fondness] town), and the service just fine, thank you. If you're on your way to see the Big Chair or to shop in their currently-being-revitalized downtown, stop by and get a coffee and some Munchkins.
