I love coffee shops, so I always get excited when I can try a new to me spot, like The Borough. I…read moredon't get to Allendale very often (maybe twice a year) so when I was heading to Grand Valley's campus for an event recently, I made sure to allow extra time to stop by. The parking lot in front is pretty small, and there is only one access point, so if you go past it, you'll have to turn around near the apartments behind it. Don't drive on the sidewalk... I didn't, mostly because there is a sign that says, "This is a sidewalk" which made me laugh. (Truly that should be an entrance into the parking lot!) The space is very bright and airy with cute decor and space to get some work or studying done. I was greeted right away when I walked in and I had a tough time deciding what to order. I wasn't hungry, but I love that they have a full on food menu - including salads, burgers(!!!), bagels, toasts, paninis, pastries, etc. Plus all the regular coffee items, boba, smoothies, and teas. I went with one of the seasonal specials, the banana bread matcha. It didn't take too long to come out and it was very tasty - not really what I was expecting, but I liked it. It reminded me of a very green banana (which is how I prefer bananas), it wasn't super sweet but also not super matcha-y. They are expanding their space, so I am interested in coming back to see what that looks like and to order more delicious drinks and try the food!

We appreciated the kid friendly array of games and etch-a-sketch for entertainment. The menu is fun, but you need to search for prices. We ordered fries, a plain smashburger, a panini, and two sodas for around $31. Tipping is optional and the space is bright, playing dream pop tunes and filled with young 20 somethings. The food was good enough. My panini was well grilled, but the tomatoes would have been next level had they been marinated in balsamic vinegar. Winter is tough to find tasty tomatoes so I don't fault them on it... however the tomatoes were the let down of the Turkey PT 3 panini. The smashburger was sufficient. My husband said it tasted on par with Burger King (not sure if that's a compliment or a diss because we love BK). He was disappointed with the fries because earlier pictures portrayed them as hand cut and these were definitely from frozen. Either way, we cleaned our plates. If we come back, I'd be curious to try their breakfast. The açaí bowls look delicious along with the lox bagel and Seoul sunrise. They also have boba drinks, smoothies, coffees, and teas. Glad to have something with chill vibes in the neighborhood, but I definitely feel like the oldest person in the establishment. perhaps I contributed to the aging hipster vibe. We'll be back someday in the morning

Service was top notch, and I was waited on with patience and kindness as my tired brain struggled to decide which muffin was the right choice today. My latte was delicious and the muffin was epic for a coffeeshop. The shop was busy with customers buying everything from coffee gift baskets to several pounds of coffee for their local business to women stopping in for a sweet snack and coffee, like me. I'll definitely return when I'm back in town, and I recommend that you stop by.

The Big Bean developed a love for coffee during late night study sessions while in college. I totally relate as college was when I acquired a taste for the drink (except it was before early morning lab). Anyways, this eventually led to him pursuing a master's thesis on the emerging specialty coffee industry. All this was over twenty-five years ago and since then his company has become one of the leading private label coffee suppliers in the country. I've never heard of the company, but I spotted the Rainforest Blend on sale at my local Meijer and decided to give it a chance. The metallic purple packaging and tropical theme were what initially drew me in. I thought the grounds had a fantastic aroma, but the brewed coffee was overall somewhat bland. Who knows, maybe I just got a bad bag? I'll be sticking to my regular brands though as the Rainforest Blend was just okay. There were only two people working, one making drinks and one taking orders. The man making drinks was focused on making one drink at a time which caused us to wait over 20 minutes for one drink. Once he made the drink, he sat it on a table and made the man taking orders call out the drinks which resulted in drinks sitting there for 5+ minutes after they were made. I watched him make my drink and he only put one shot of espresso in it, entirely too much milk, and about 5 ice cubes. I took about 3 sips before throwing it away. Overall, it was a really disappointing experience. The place was cute but it doesn't make up for exceptionally slow service and poorly made drinks.

I like that they offer frittatas and light sides such as pasta salad, pesto tortellini and chicken salad amongst a few other options. I imagine this space would be great to get some work done but most certainly to catch up with people you wanna spend time with. I tried the Cafe miel....a first for me. Espresso, honey, cinnamon and oat milk. I added a shot of vanilla and I loved it! The bacon + cheddar frittata was yummy! Some may find it too salty but I enjoyed it. It's a quirky space because they also sell vintage clothing pieces and books. But it's really cool!
