Don't bother going anywhere else for coffee if you're near Ionia, Sozo's should be your first and only stop. I've been to a lot of coffee shops in nearby cities and big cities around the country and Sozo's is just as good if not better than any I've visited. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and the environment is really laid back, with lots of space to sit and work or meet with friends, coworkers, or classmates. They source their own beans, and make their own baked goods in house. I'll often order their drip cause it's so good, but I also love their pour over, the Nutty Irishman, or just a plain Cortado. When I moved to Ionia from GR over a year ago, I was worried that Biggby was my only option... I was so relieved to find Sozo. This is a real coffee lovers heaven. The staff is consistently friendly and fast, the baked goods are always bangin, and the atmosphere is super cozy. And the prices are very fair. I was actually blown away because it tasted so good! Truly a unique flavor profile...it was nutty with notes of cinnamon. Whoever roasted did an amazing job. Sozo has high quality, superior coffee -- a step above the rest! I tried the chocolate cherry latte and my husband had a hot chocolate. Both were so good -- we were very impressed! The coffee was made from high quality beans and the latte was so delicious. It was not too sweet, yet so flavorful. The staff was very warm, friendly and knowledgeable about the coffees. They had some sweets available which were very fairly priced. There was no wait and they also have a drive through available. The coffee shop itself was not my favorite atmosphere/decor. The coffee bar area was very cute and industrial style, but the decor throughout was a little in-cohesive and a bit dark. It wouldn't be a go to spot to sit and spend time there...but the coffee itself and service was exceptional! read more

Very cool coffee shop my mom found on our way passing through town. She scoped it out on Yelp first and the awesome reviews are well-deserved! The coffee was very good. I got a pumpkin spice latte and it wasn't too sugary or sweet at all, with a very robust pumpkin flavor. My mom had a plain latte and said she really liked it. We tried both the raspberry white chocolate muffin and the coffee cake muffin. The coffee cake was good but the raspberry was amazing! The staff was really friendly and I loved the ambiance of the place. It was very cozy. There is a drive through too. We were so impressed we planned to return later the same day on our way back through, but sadly they were closed by the time we got there at 4pm. The people here are so wonderful! I stopped in here on my way back from Greenville to my hotel in Lansing. I was only in there a couple minutes. Grabbed a cup of hot chai tea latte. Had a really pleasant conversation with the young man who was working. Paid and left. Got back to my hotel and could not find my wallet in the car. Argh! I left a voicemail on the business phone, even though they were already closed. I also sent an email to the business asking them to call me about my lost wallet. About an hour later I got a text message from the owner Rod who said his wife was on her way up there to check the store. He called me later saying he had gone up as well, walked around the parking lot with his cell phone flashlight and couldn't see it. Talk about going above and beyond for a customer! Not many people would do that only called Michigan night. This will definitely be my go to spot whenever I'm in the area. Oh, and the chai tea latte was divine! PS I Did find the wallet. First of all, when it comes to coffee, my expectations are high, and I'm a bit of a connoisseur of a good, properly made, fresh cup of coffee (so keep that in mind with my coffee house reviews...). ;) I drove about an hour up to check this place out. From everything I could gather, it seemed to be a place worth the drive in order to get some fresh roasted beans, and based on the fact that there is a large "Demand Fresh!" vinyl stickered on every window in the place really had my hopes up! Unfortunately, it didn't really pan out that way. :/ It is a very nice place inside. Large, roomy, inviting; and with a roaster in the middle up against the wall. They have a decent selection of coffee devices for sale; lower end grinders, French Presses, and pour overs. Too bad they don't use any of them though; I ordered a 16oz. coffee, and when I asked, was told it was the Guatemalan. It came out of a large air pot brew vat, and had probably been made many hours earlier and left to over brew all day long. Very bitter and overextracted. I ended up pouring it out in the parking lot. Before purchasing, I perused the coffee bean selection. Several single origin beans (a good sign) but when checking the "roasted on" date on the back, they had all been roasted a month ago! Not at all what I would expect from a small coffee house that self roasts and proclaims a penchant for "fresh". All in all, it's a nice place, the staff is friendly, and if you are not too demanding, you will probably enjoy a decent coffee based drink. Update: I've stopped and gotten beans there a couple of times now. I've figured out a couple of "tricks" when buying them; reach around and check bags in the back of the display, there might be fresher beans hidden back there. If not, ask if they have anything that has been freshly roasted. I asked them if they had anything fresh and they went to the back and grabbed me a bag that had been roasted a couple days prior. Evidently they don't put the fresh stuff out until all the old stock is gone... :/ read more

I'm from out of state and visiting family here. I've heard a lot of good things about Sozo and finally I get a chance to check it out myself. Well my visit did not disappoint. I was excited to see that they roast their own beans. My drink was made perfectly and the espresso was smooth and not bitter (A +++++)! The owners were working behind the counter and were very friendly. The space is laid out nice and with plenty of outlets, free wi-fi, a mix of tables/chairs and soft-seating. There's also a room for private gatherings. I look forward to visiting at least once more before leaving town. read more
