Have always had good service at Spectrum eye. Dr Athans is great. Clean modern facility where you can see the eye doctor and get your glasses. Note: bring your checkbook. There is an additional charge for using a credit card to cover the fee they are charged by the credit card company. Return the spectrum Eye Center after two years. Got excellent service by both sides. Doctor did a very thorough professional exam with very little waiting. Explained everything in detail and the glasses department had improved immensely with their customer service. If I could give less then a 1 review I would. First, the technician touched my daughter's eye without washing her hand after she was in and out if opening doors, I have never seen such poor hygiene cleaning each piece of equipment as well. Then I ask for my VSP coverage let them know I am there only for my fully covered annual exam and ask at least 4x to confirm this and am ignored but they kept harassing me for my medical insurance which they told me would cover nonsense they kept creating issues to bill for (I have been been to eye docs for the last 40 years and have never been told or experienced the crap they tried yo create and scare you with to bill your medical insurance, it was out if control) then at the end they tell me I owe $120 for a new patient visit (never had that at any other eye doctor and they did not disclose this when I asked 4x during my visit). I was very upset. They also charge a 3.5% credit card fee which I am looking into to see if bc they provide healthcare they are even allowed to put in the customer. Oh and the doctor told my daughter she saw fine when we questioned having the same prescription that we came in with for contacts and glasses that she couldn't see which was the only reason we stayed. The entire visit was a sales pitch trying to get my medical card. It was the worst experience at a doctors office I ever had. They do not care about the patient but rather how much money they can make from the patient. Also take a look at their glasses they are hundreds more than other eye doctors for the starting price. read more

Today I received my daughter's new eyeglasses in the mail - you read that right, in the mail. Along with a letter stating that mine and my daughter's medical relationship had been terminated. (I will attach said letter for reference) Our appointments were on 10/12. After our visit with the doctor and the eye glass specialists, we were sent into the office to pay. *while with the glasses specialist, we were told what the total cost would be for my daughter, which included the copay -- $93* When we sat down with the person to pay, she said "with your VSP, your office visit is $15" to which I said "so $15 plus $93" and was interrupted by this lady who said "I don't know who told you $93, but that's not all you owe". I said "well the lady in the glasses dept told me my daughter's cost was $93 so I was going to say before you interrupted me" to which she interrupted me AGAIN and said "the glasses dept don't know what we charge so I don't know how she could tell you that". I said "well again, I was only asking what $15 and $93 was so I could write the check". She said "well her office visit was $15 too". I said "ok, so what's $93 plus $30" because by this time I was getting aggravated with her eye rolls and attitude not to mention my eyes were dilated and I could barely see. So I said "here's your check but you need to check your attitude". She whipped around in her chair and said she didn't have an attitude. I said "well it definitely appears and sounds like you do with the way you're talking to me." She said something else to which my daughter piped in and said "you're talking to my mom like she's stupid". Something else was said by her and I did drop and F bomb, I do remember that. My bad... we leave. I open the box today and after reading the letter, called their office. I was connected to someone named Amber who after I said who I was and why I was calling, put me on hold. We were disconnected and Michelle calls back with me on speaker and Amber in the room to hear. I said how I was appalled at receiving this letter and literally shocked that no one had bothered to reach out to me - the patient - to even hear my side of it. Michelle said that she had eye witnesses - to which I said there was no one else in the office/room with us - and then she said ppl in the lobby could hear us. I said "I made it a point to be loud but I apologize for dropping the F bomb". I also said "but no one saw her facial expressions, eye rolls or heard how she talked condescending to me, right"? Michelle said that they made their decision based on her employee feeling threatened after she said I put my finger in her face. I did NOT put my finger in her face. Right, wrong or indifferent, I still would not patron this office after getting her glasses, even if I had not received this letter. I find it VERY unprofessional that Dr. Poindexter nor anyone in his office bothered to reach out to me to ask my side of the story. No one there cared if I was upset or if I felt threatened. I have been a loyal patient of this office since 1993. TWENTY NINE YEARS I've seen, my husband has seen, and both my daughters have seen Dr. Bumgarner. And the best I get after being made to feel ignorant by an employee there, is the attached letter. I will be posting this on every platform possible, as promised. read more

How can a returning patient not be allowed to make an appointment other than 'same day?' I had left a message with the appointment desk with no return call. I had no trouble getting an appointment to get my exam. I was seen quickly after I signed in. As a matter of fact, all was great except for ordering my glasses. Placing the order was painless but getting a status of the glasses I ordered over a month ago is like pulling teeth. The eyeglass department will neither answer the phone nor return phone calls. I call and speak to the operator and they would only transfer me to the eyeglass department with the same result. After leaving a voicemail, the phone system says you can hold on to speak to the operator then, "Thank you for calling. Good-bye." Then it hangs up. read more

I am brand new to Aberdeen - I called for an appointment; the lady on the phone asked me about my insurance, told her my insurance is VSP, and that the recommend Spectrum Eye Care because they are a premiere member of their network. The lady on the phone then asked me for my medical insurance and I said I don't remember the name - but I said all I need to do is an eye exam and eyeglasses., She then told me that I will have to pay out of pocket for the EYE exam since VSP may not cover that - told her last year I went to Walmart and they did everything under my insurance including the eyeglasses, paid $0; then she said Spectrum Eye Center have more equipment than Walmart and that will cost me. That was it for me. The reason I am writing here, she totally scared me to even approach this office - I am looking for a different location now, someplace where the appointment makers are more friendly and professional and also make sense. read more

What happened to patient-centered care? I was hustled from the moment I walked in the door. Every staff member seemed rushed. The waiting area was loud, crowded and obnoxious. I was handed a long itemized bill at the end of a standard annual visit, which of course I couldn't read because they had just dilated my pupils. So easy to order contacts online! I realized that I was out of contacts this morning so I went on the Spectrum Eye Center website to see how I could order some replacements as soon as possible. Their online system was easy to use and for a small additional fee, my contacts will be shipped to my home tomorrow! I decided to try Spectrum Eye Center for the first time and I was very disappointed. As soon as I walked in, I waited in a roped off area and finally someone comes to get you for round one. I was constantly herded to different stations like cattle. Every room had different technicians performing different duties. The hallways were crowded and busy. When I made it to the doctor's office, my exam lasted 10 minutes. I spent about 2 hours there and saw the doctor for 10 minutes. There's something wrong with this picture. What happened to the old days of seeing the eye doctor and spending time with him for his expertise, not the technicians? read more

They decided to make me an appointment without telling me. Because I have college in Raleigh, I'm not able to come back for appointments. They should have 1. not made the appointment for me, 2. called me about the appointment (which they did not do). I have never seen a place make an appointment for you without telling you first. My mother, who has early onset dementia, scheduled her appointment with Carolina Eye clinic in Southern Pines, but told me that her appointment was with Spectrum Eye. When we showed up at Spectrum eye, and found out that she did not have an appointment, the ladies at the desk managed to squeeze her in with the Doctor right away. They were so friendly, and went way above and beyond, and made sure that she wasn't embarrassed by her mistake. She told me several times on the way home how nice everyone was to her and that Spectrum Eye is her favorite doctor's office. Looking for prompt, individualized treatment at an optometrist's office? Better look elsewhere then, because this place isn't for you. I arrived at 3:00 for an eye exam and wasn't seated until thirty minutes later. Then I got shuttled around from room to room by different technicians, with some more waiting time in between. All of the technicians were very friendly and competent, so this is definitely NOT a knock on them or their skills, but rather a criticism of the overall feel of getting herded around the place with the other patients like a bunch of cattle. I also felt a bit nickled and dimed with certain aspects of the exam, more so than any other optometrists I've had in the past. But look. All this would be tolerable if I hadn't ended up getting billed almost $800 too much for contacts. I tried to explain the the folks at the front desk that because I'm blind as a bat, I'm supposed to qualify for some special concession from my insurance provider that significantly reduces the costs the contacts. After going back and forth for a few minutes and basically hitting a brick wall, I paid the entire amount (I needed my contacts okay, I was down to my last week's worth). I walked out of there, and called up my old optometrist and my vision insurance provider to get things sorted out. It all worked out in the end, but I really don't think I should have had to spend several hours on the phone trying to explain things to insurance and bugging my old optometrist office back in Hawaii to help me out. While I can forgive delays or minor hiccups in service, I cannot look past something as critical as an $800 billing difference. My only consolation is that the next patient in my situation hopefully won't have to jump through all these unnecessary hoops. read more

First, let me say that Dr Bumgarner and staff provide 5 Star service. This is important to me because I have serious eye issues having had several eye surgeries at Carolina Eye Assoc, my file there is at least 2 inches thick. My problem is with the eye glasses department. My experience has steadily declined in this area. Previously my prescription was ordered to fit metal frames. It came back to fit rimless frames. This error was not detected until I came in to replace my lens. A simple check when th lens arrived would have caught this error before I came in. After they came in, I developed an eye ache after 3 months. Dr Bumgarner reexamined my eyes (at no charge) with no change in the prescription. The new lens are perfect. Recently I ordered new glasses and called after 11 business days to get the status of my new glasses. I was informed that the lens were there but the frames weren't. It appears that staff doesn't follow up with providers to ensure accurate and on time arrival. If I hadn't called they still wouldn't know the frames hadn't come in. Hopefully they will be here next week, or maybe another 10 business days. I'll continue with Dr Bumgarner but I think I'll get my glasses elsewhere. read more

I've been wearing contacts for over 50 years and this was the worst fit I've ever had after going back time after time for the doc to get the vision right which he never achieved. Got tired of going back and just gave up. Overly priced as well. I've never should have left Dr. Fogelman but Spectrum came highly recommended. Headed back to Fogelman. read more

The staff was great unfortunately I can't say the rest for D.Athens. From what I was told I had the ability to try different contacts until I found the comfortable one. Dr Athen not only let me try just 2 but got the prescription wrong 2 times didn't ask me to come back to see how the contact was feeling referred me to a different place to order my contacts when I was ready. I was not ready cause my contact wasn't the rite strength. What a great way to pass the bucket absolutely hate service like this. I WILL NOT REFEER ANYONE. read more
