This honestly was my best eye doctor experience ever. Dr.Haloua was super calming and professional. Not only ensuring that I understood everything that was happening during the exam, but also understanding my need. I got contacts for the first time (as well as frames) here. The class Dr.Haloua gave made contacts seem less scary, and her step by step approach helped me replicate the tactics at home. As for everyone else in that office- so nice. I felt immediatley welcomed,not just by them saying hello, but just by the atmosphere they helped create. While trying on glasses I had support and honest insight from all the staff.When I finally found my frames it was like a light bulb moment- I got compliments, and not just because they were selling the most expensive frames (they weren't) they just truly liked the way they looked. They were so excited to see me on follow up appointments that I didn't even stress about driving downtown. As for pricing, they are about average to most eye doctors. However they were helpful in my payment options. They also asked my price range and were honest about cost. Not to mention their office was also apparently under construction at this point. Having no practical way to order them online, I started cold calling the roughly 50 locations that carried them in the USA. Spectacles was happy to help, even though they do not have an online store. They ordered my glasses from France (I am fancy) and provided me with regular updates. Everyone keeps asking me where I got my glasses. The experience of the exam was fine and professional, but the prescription I was ultimately given was simply wrong, which wasn't apparent until I used the prescription on a purchase of glasses from Zenni. I knew that my eyesight had shifted from my last prescription, which was the reason I scheduled an exam in the first place. But the prescription Spectacles gave me was significantly different from my last prescription, and I was concerned even before I used it to purchase glasses that it might not be right. But since I don't have the expertise to assess, who am I to say? As already mentioned, the prescription was far off. This is one of the most approachable and considerate opticals you can find here at State College, or perhaps anywhere. Joseph, the optician, is extremely friendly and honest when it comes to picking glasses. He wants you to find the glasses the speak to YOU. All I had to do was tell him my style and what I wanted out of a nice pair of glasses and he helped me by showing me a plethora of frames. He also helped me determine my face shape and the features that should be accentuated - something I never really thought of. This is my first time spending big money on a pair of glasses, but they are QUALITY glasses (and it looks brilliant). I've always opted for cheap, insurance and free frames that broke or just simply looked awful on me. This place also has pretty up-to-date styles and looks, so if you want to look for something specific, don't hesitate to ask him because he will try his best to help you. I'm not going to lie, it's expensive, but it's for your eyes. It is crucial to get the best service for your health, and this is the place to go to for it. The examination was pretty cheap, too, so it really comes down to the frame for the majority of the cost. But don't be hesitant because you will find great styles at decent prices, as well. I will definitely recommend people to come to Spectacles over any other place here. I'll definitely be stopping here for any frame adjustments or issues. read more

This is the only place I go for my glasses and eye care! I've purchased at least 6 pair of designer frames here over the years, and have been happy every time! People compliment my glasses often and ask where I get them -- Joseph picks frame manufacturers of the highest quality and most interesting styles to stock his store; then he helps you pick out the best frames for your face and personality with incredible accuracy. Also, he services my frames gladly whenever they require a tune up (such as a thorough cleaning or re-adjustment) no matter how long it's been since I first purchased them. The optometrist is wonderful -- she is very focused and professional, and will fit you with contacts as many times as required to achieve the right fit, feel, and vision. I was trying to get some contacts there at first. In the mean time, I let the the guy to help me adjust my spectacle frame because it feels too loose. Then this guy immediately broke my eye glasses and said he did not put any pressure. Since lens are cut specifically for that frame, so he just lost me several hundreds dollars. I asked him for possible reimbursement option, but he was being so irresponsible and wound not admit his fault. Anyway, I would recommend any customer NOT going to this store for the following reasons: 1. This guy is not familiar with insurance coverage policy: The regular penn state vision insurance used to cover $90 annually. But this policy has changed this year and cover $130, and he has no idea about that. 2. They are NOT professional. I have been wearing eyeglasses for 14 years, and this is literally the First time an optician broke a pair of eyeglasses! Unbelievable! 3. They do not care about their patients. Once they make a mistake, they would not like to take the responsibility. They will tell you that you should be aware of the risk before you choose us! 4. There are many more better and cheaper places than them. You cant get fully covered with penn state regular insurance there. You can go Nittany Eye, Target optical, insight eye. I have procrastinated my entire life buying glasses, but I decided that the time has finally come because I just could not see well. A friend suggested that I schedule an appointment with Dr. Haloua. I scheduled my appointment over the phone. She was absolutely fantastic, and gave me a very comprehensive exam. She spent a considerable amount of time explaining why my vision degraded, how to best correct it, and what I can expect for the future. Not a question went unanswered, and she even filled my curiosity of how the testing instruments work. After the visit, I met with the optician, who was very polite, and did not put any pressure on buying expensive frames. I realized how cutting lens is a mix of art and science, and I even took a peak at the equipment that is used in house to cut and fit the lens to the frames -- absolutely fascinating. read more

I purchased a pair of eyeglasses from Spectacles a month ago and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. The store carries some of the usual brands, but also a variety of other brands you won't find in other stores, with really cool and interesting styles. Now i came in here thinking that it would be just another mediocre service in State College; a place that only had nice frames and an optometrist from a former soviet bloc country. Well! I can say that i was incredibly surprised! First off, the initial interaction with the staff when making my appointment was a great experience. They were very facilitating. When i came in for my appointment, i felt like i had been a client of theirs for years, even though this was my first visit with them! When it came to the eye exam, i have never been though as many interesting tests than i have here that were not dependent on technology. the optometrist was very nice, comforting, and professional; you really trusted what she was doing the entire time. when shopping for new frames/lenses, the sales man was very confidence inducing, backing everything he does and says with his own personal guarantee, aside from letting you know that what you are buying actually has a robust warranty itself. he was very honest and told me what he felt what frames i looked good in while working with my tastes. overall it was a great experience through an through. its really too bad i am going to be moving out of state college in a matter of months. i really recommend this place if you enjoy having good old-fashioned quality service, experiences, and well known name brands. read more

Great place, went in to get my glasses repaired and figured it would be $10 bucks, he wouldn't let me pay! Top notch customer service

Get it in writing. The frames I chose were $225 and was told the lenses to fit them would be $160. So, glasses plus eye exam came to $440....fine. When I returned the next week, they said the lenses would be $290, instead of the $160 I was told. They denied that they said my lenses would be $160.....even though the optician looked at my frames and knew exactly what type of lenses I needed when he quoted the price. So, I wanted to jot down style number of the frames to ask my optician friend in another state her opinion on if I really needed a certain type of lens to have progressives. When I got out my paper, the frames were snatched away......literally. I was told they don't give out that information. (info right on the sidepiece) Before that, I had intended to return, because what is most important to me is the style advice and the doctor, both of which were good. Later, I found the frames online for under $150, which I imagine, is why they won't allow the style number to be looked at! Still, I would have returned just because I liked the people and my number one criteria is service. Not now, not ever. read more

The eye exam was ok. BUT I paid more than 300 in total and got a very poor cut left Len which cannot even fit into my frame. I was in a rush so I didn't have time to look through the new glasses in store, and when I got home I found the left len is bigger than my frame so it makes my frame go out of its shape a little bit. I am student of Penn State and my glasses that I got back home got damaged when I took a tumble the other day. I went into Spectacles today and who I believe to be the owner took 20 minutes out of the day to repair them for me and fit them to my face, free of charge. They offered excellent customer service. The eye exam was thorough and seemed informative, and the doctor was very nice and seemed knowledgeable. The front desk people were also seemingly very nice and helpful in helping me find a classy pair of frames that were marked down to fit the budget of a college student. They also had lots of options in terms of frames and lenses. However, when I asked about my insurance and their policies, I got a long, fast-spoken, confusing reply. When I asked again to get some clarification, they made it seem as though they had seen my insurance before and told me that the insurance would cover about $100. They said I would get a return check within a month. Two months passed and I received nothing. I went back to Spectacles to check on the status. They said they would send the report again, email me a copy (which I never got), and they said I should get a check within two weeks (nope, didn't happen). Before I left, I heard two of the front desk people saying to one another that they weren't in network. Not in network?!?! No wonder I didn't get a reimbursement! So, instead of simply being told that they weren't in network, I got duped into buying their product and services. Long story short, if you can afford to be robbed of a hundred or so dollars, this is your place for glasses. read more

I've been a customer at Spectacles since they first opened. Julie, the optometrist, is friendly and explains what she's doing and why in the exam as a matter of course. I am sensitive to having my eye poked for the typical glaucoma test, and she does the manual exam without a surcharge (some shops charge extra for this, and it's an unpleasant surprise). I can't speak to contact lens fitting; my eye doesn't like that either. The charge for exams is reasonable and the same as at chain stores around town. In the front of the shop, Joseph maintains a fantastic selection of up-to-date frames, and all the shop staff are friendly and have a sense of what will work for your style and your face shape. For example, I have had my current frames for four years, but I still get random compliments about how good they look. This was also the case for the last pair of glasses I had from there, and the pair before that. My experience in this is not unique among their customers. Also, if you need to take some time to decide or are just browsing, they will make note of your top picks for when you come back. The staff have always taken all of my concerns about frames seriously -- from cost to lens area to form factor -- and never tried to sell me something (however nice) that was less than perfect for my purpose. When it comes to lenses, they are honest about what is best for your prescription and how you wear your glasses and why. For example, they won't stop you from getting the ultra-high-index 1.76 lenses for your -2.0 prescription, but they will tell you why it's not a good value until you get to the high numbers. They also have excellent warranty and customer service. When my lenses have cracked, they have been replaced quickly for free when under the warranty (1 year) or at a discount after the warranty has expired. Because I don't have a backup pair of glasses (silly of me, I know, but the economy is lousy and prescription changed a lot last time), Joseph has milled the lenses to size for me in the shop while I wait. I did have to wait a week for the blank lenses to come in, but that may be in part because I have a unique prescription. Lenses almost always come in ahead of the time you are quoted, and the finished glasses are usually ready to pick up within a week. The prices are not the cheapest, but they are reasonable for the quality and the service you receive. In addition, there are no surprise costs like lenses advertised at $99 but you have to pay extra for the scratch-coating, anti-glare, etc. that are necessary to see your best. Once all the costs are factored in, their price for lenses is competitive. The prices on even designer frames are fair, and the staff are happy to work with your budget. Many frames have available polarized sunglass clips, which are convenient and less expensive than getting a separate pair of prescription sunglasses. Bottom line: If you want a $99 special for glasses your kid is going to stomp on on the playground or outgrow in a year, by all means go to the big chains and take advantage. But if you want to be looking good for years to come and have a painless selection process, go to Spectacles. You'll be glad you did! read more

They have a vast selection of high end frames and sunglasses, so it always takes me a while to find my frames. They always pull frames and help me decide what looks fun and funky but still look nice on my face. Easily the best eye experience I've ever had. I needed an eye exam to get contacts, and at first I ruled out Spectacles because wow, there's no way a business downtown would be in my price range.
