I have never written a review ... an insulting encounter today ... took-off a half-day work and could not complete my scheduled appointment. The staff (3 people) would not let me past the front desk because I would not provide my DOB. My record was already in the system, I have been to this facility at least 3 times in the past, but was denied today. My birthdate is irrelevant to an eye exam and the purchase of eyeglasses. There were no medical procedures anticipated, I am not using insurance, and no verifications are required. I was prepared to spend up to $1,500. cash today and my wife (who now cancelled) was prepared to do the same. We both lost a great deal today. read more

I miss the one I went to in Altoona. The dr. Was nice. It all was fine. I dont know why they shut it down or if they just moved.​

The optometrist was very unprofessional and bordered on cruel during my appointment. I am a service member and needed a form signed as part of an annual vision exam requirement. I was berated for several minutes and made to feel I'd done something wrong for asking him to fill out half of a sheet of paper - all with the same information entered into the regular exam forms. After being lectured and put down, I got up to leave and he decided to backtrack and fill it out "just this once". I was appalled by his behavior and would strongly recommend going anywhere else in State College should you need any vision appointments. read more

Do. Not. Waste. Your. Time. And. Money. There are no words to express my disappointment. The moment I put on my new glasses, I knew there was a problem. I expressed my displeasure immediately. They tried to tell me it was because I wasn't used to progressive lenses ... wait for it ... WHICH I HAVE WORN FOR 15 YEARS. They offered a 2nd exam ... wait for it ... from the same person. I declined. They immediately offered a refund, which I accepted, but there's no reimbursement for my time, travel & disappointment. TIME is the new currency. How frustrating. I wondered how they were able to schedule my appointment for an exam in one day with 18 slots available. These days and times with medical professionals backed up for weeks, there's a reason for that. Now I know. Now you know. Plan accordingly and look around before making an appointment here. I've been to vision works before for glasses in Pittsburgh but this was my first for contact lenses in the State College location. What should have taken 45 minutes turned into 3 hours because I struggled with them. However, two women staff members in-particular, were incredibly kind and patient with me as I tried to put them in and remove them. They were also very funny as I struggled easing my frustration. The doctor was also very kind and patient. Vision works is a very credible eye place that will never do you wrong but having awesome staff made the experience that much better. Comments on here are calling the staff mediocre or rude; but I don't think people realize how condescending they sound when talking to the staff, remember to be kind to others in these confusing times! read more

Basically the same as Walmart vision center but more expensive and the employees had a smug phony friendliness. Also good luck if you try to call I was on hold for 33 minutes when I called and a representative finally answered just to put me on hold again while she transferred me to the location that I had called and then told me that she couldn't get through to anyone and that I could leave a callback number. Do what you will but I'm sure I won't be going back again. read more

Mediocre Selection of eyeglasses, most of the adult glasses look the same. They have cute styles for kids, just metal, black, blue. No florals or cute patterns. Way more expensive than a year ago! Ask for pricing before you commit!!! Also, that buy one get one free deal marketed all over? You CANT use it if you have vision insurance! They don't tell you that right away either. read more

Can't get anyone on the phone at this location or the customer service line. Would not recommend this place to anyone who doesn't want to spend the entire day/ week tracking down your contacts/ glasses. These contacts will be my last transaction with this business. read more

Very good experiences two years in a row. Last year was 2 kids for exams and glasses, this year was 3 kids for exams, 2 still have glasses, and I need progressive bifocals. Fast and high quality eye exam and friendly office staff. Smooth, easy, and no pressure. read more

the lady that checked me in and did my pre testing was short with me and acted like she was in a hurry. dr mcelvy was also short with me and acted annoyed that he had to tweak my prescription a couple times. Since March I have been trying to simply get a pair of glasses I can actually see out of with no luck. I had to send my glasses back twice, once because the prescription was wrong and the second time because the frames did not accommodate for my pantascopic tilt that is necessary. I then went back to my regular optician there (I was scheduled with someone else the first time because of automated scheduling) and by all means she is terrific- tried her best to help and this review has nothing against her- it has to do with how I was treated once I picked my glasses up for the third time... the front end of this location is horrible. I have never felt so humiliated just trying to get my glasses to fit correctly. I took the third pair back and was told they can not help me - I needed to go to another local optician because they don't have an in house lab... the gentleman said he tells all of his patients this... but I have already paid for two eye exams and two frames and lenses from this location... Seriously? So I took their advice and consulted another lab elsewhere- where my suspicions were confirmed. The lenses were cut completely backwards and the alignment of the transitional lens were not correct. At this point I simply want a refund for the time and effort I have put into simply getting a pair of glasses I can see from. Ridiculous does not even begin to explain it. I am a patient person but the way I was treated was -4 stars at best. Never again... read more

One of the best eye doctors I've ever been to. They were patient, thoughtful, and clearly knew what they were talking about. Yana is one of those rare doctors who is both insightful and scientific, willing to find the real root of an issue, and also compassionate and willing to listen. Excellent experience! I saw Yana (I believe) and she was so fun and easy to talk to. She didn't try to sell me on glasses I didn't need, and listened carefully to the issues I've been having. The whole staff was friendly and helpful, and I got my glasses for much cheaper than expected. I'd definitely go back, and will recommend it to friends! read more

A horrible place. The Dr (James Mckelvey) was condescending and rude, unprofessional and impatient. He got upset when I could not see the letters (seriously?), or when I asked him to move since he was blocking the screen. He kept saying "I am sorry, I can't help you this way" each time I did not respond to his questions in a way he thought I should. He ignored my questions and gave me a feeling that I am wasting his time (the store was empty). I truly could not believe that someone can be so bad in what they do. I ended up leaving with a worthless prescription just to schedule another appointment somewhere else. In the other place, that was much better, the Dr was surprised to see the prescription I received just 4 days earlier, it was off in 1.5 in one eye. Overall, very unpleasant experience. Their service is exceptional, from the friendly voice answering their phone to the knowledge in store staff. We especially appreciate Secret Varner for her helpful guidance and happy energy. This Visionworks really puts their customers/patients first. They want you to have a great experience there and are willing to help to resolve issues. If someone would ask me about if they should go to this Visionworks, I would recommend them. [I wrote a review on this initially that Visionworks made me upset with the experience that I had there and something that I called in about... I was upset because it was an unresolved issue and a negative view. I'm pretty sure that Visionworks was initially unaware that it was an unresolved issue until I wrote a Yelp review; they recently contacted me and resolved the issue; even though the issue happened over a year ago. It, quite frankly, was unexpected that they resolved the issue as they did. The staff here impressed me with their willingness to help and how they handled the situation. I truly want to give 5 stars to them, but I can't since it would be a little strange to go from one extreme to the next. I am impressed with how they handled the situation and it made me happy with this Visionworks enough to completely change my review on here. Everyone there that I spoke with was great. I do NOT recommend Visionworks! I saw that they had a promotion going on to get your eyes checked for $19 and I decided to schedule an appointment. All of the other doctors in this area charge over $120 for a simple eye exam. It made me wonder how Visionworks made money if their eye exams were dirt cheap. I told to my husband that they probably tell everyone their eyes are bad and that they need to buy frames. I had PRK Lasik done last year (May 2017). I had my eye checked towards the end of the year by a doctor in Altoona and I was told that I had better than 20/20 vision. At my appointment at Vision works, I read the last lines without a problem. The doctor ended up telling me that one of my eyes is bad and that I needed frames. How does a person with vision better than 20/20 need glasses? I ended up getting my eyes checked again at a different doctors office and I was told that my eyes are good and are better than 20/20. This proves that Visoinworks is unethical and try to sell frames to everyone that walks in their doors. read more

I was "greeted" by a very rude receptionist that was unable to find me in the system - which apparently was my fault and not theirs. When she finally located me - she then had problems with my insurance - again -my fault, not hers. When she figured that out - no apologies - just - go back. The woman that examined my eyes was snippy, rude and when I brought up a concern that I had - was completely unhelpful. A waste of time, money and utterly frustrating. Go anywhere else in town, but not here. Rude is synonymous with customer service at Vision Works. read more
