I went to one auto body that gave me a starting estimate of $980 plus more if they found more damage underneath, once they took the fender and bumper off. Next, I went to Scotsman's auto body in Mount Sinai on 25A on the corner of 30 Chestnut St. Scotty came out to look at the damage. He assesed what was wrong and repaired the damage in about 15 minutes. Free, no charge! The shop and premises are clean and immaculate and Scotty was so honest and friendly. I highly recommend Scotsman's auto body in Mount Sinai. If I ever need an auto body shop that is where I'm going!

To begin, we had a car seat/ stroller that was given to us by a well meaning friend. Upon review of it, Chris immediately said that it did not meet current safety guidelines and suggested that we cut the straps and throw it out, which we did just that! I already felt safer knowing that he was knowledgeable about the most recent recalls and safety measures. Then, with patience, he installed our new car seat and bases in each of our vehicles, at no charge, and gave us a FULL education about the seat itself, how to use it, and so much more information that I never would have expected to learn. Chris is the authority on car seat installs and I would never go ANYWHERE else. I have already recommended him to all my friends and family who are expecting. A+++++++ for the service at Continental. When I called Dan had me bring in the car, the estimate was unexpectedly reasonable and was approved the next day. Dan ordered the parts and the car was repaired in two days - with free buffing of some scratches unrelated to the repair. Baron Honda highly recommended Schubert's when I called them...I had two bad experiences with shop repairs in the past; one shop replaced fender and door panels [big deer's antler caught in my side view mirror and slammed in the whole side of the car]. After repair the fender kept popping off and I had to keep bringing it back to have it tacked together. He hassled with the insurance adjuster for more money and went cheap ordering parts as the original joining bracket was not replaced [as per # 2 shop auto mechanic]. This other shop took my car apart and ordered parts and I had to rent a car for more than a week while it sat in the shop waiting for parts. The rental agent had an office in the shop.

I made the mistake of taking my Toyota here for a loose splash shield (at most a 300 job and that is being generous). Rather than simply fix the shield, they took apart my bumper and headlights without my permission- they later claim this was necessary to "figure out what was wrong"- such that the car was no longer drivable (and thus stuck at the shop) and then proceeded to quote me over 3000 a few days later just to "put the car back together" since they said they couldn't put the car back together properly without replacing all these parts that were apparently now broken including the bumper and headlights (even though I had photo evidence that the bumper and headlights were completely fine before taking it in to them, photos which they initially were not aware of). Every time I tried to ask for photos so they could point out what exactly was broken or a more detailed breakdown of the cost, the owner Joe would reply something vague like "its not something you can see from photos anyways" or "you wouldn't understand the cost breakdown" and just start rattling off a bunch of jargon over the phone like I wouldn't understand any of it anyway. Very frustrating. After all this frustration for what should've been a simple fix, I told them I just wanted my car back and to please not to do anything in terms of repairs as I wanted to take my car elsewhere. They said that it would cost me $600 if I wanted to get my car back due to the time they spent to take apart the car and put it back together...keep in mind this is without replacing any parts or doing anything whatsoever useful other than remove the splash shield (not even to put a new one on)! So $600 for them to do absolutely nothing and return my car in a worse state than when I brought it in. Somewhere early in our interactions, Joe also implicitly suggested I commit insurance fraud and tell the insurance company I ran over a curb to see if they would cover the cost of full repairs. I told them I didn't even have any collision coverage when this happened so they were out of luck there. Overall VERY dishonest and icky interactions with the owner who was obviously hoping to make a quick buck by taking advantage of someone who he thought didn't know any better rather than trying to establish a loyal customer base. In the end, he (Joe) along with Mike the other manager did agree to lower the cost of putting my bumper back on, but ONLY if I paid it completely in cash. He was adamant about this and would not accept any other form of payment even though they clearly had a card reader in the shop. He got angry and defensive when confronted about this being shady. In the end I paid the 450 cash just to get the car back in my possession but it's honestly in much worse shape than when I took it in. The only useful thing they did was rip off the splash shield completely so it was no longer hanging close to the ground. It is now in my trunk and I still have to take my car somewhere else to have it replaced. There was yellow markup paint left all over the side of my vehicle when they returned it, there were three new deep scratches on the bumper that were not there when I took it in (looks like somebody keyed it; unclear if careless or intentional), the headlight was cracked, and the bumper was now completely misaligned after they decided to take it apart without my permission. I see why they insisted on cash only now as they probably did not want to risk a legal/card dispute from their shoddy work. Hope pocketing the 450 was worth it; very short sighted IMO at the cost of their reputation. TLDR: learned my mistake; do not bring your car to them. I am taking the 450 loss and all the damages they caused because 1. not worth the mental energy to deal further with these guys and 2. I do not want to risk more damage/bamboozling in their hands. I will be bringing my car to another shop to hopefully undo some of the damage they did. please be more careful and learn from my mistake. Wish it weren't so hard to find a reputable mechanic around here!!
