I happened upon Special Addition while visiting Snarf's Sandwiches. Special Addition sells maternity and nursing wear. They sell nursing bras. It's like a Petticoat Fair for nursing bras. I initially purchased three nursing bras while pregnant. Postpartum, my husband came back multiple times to purchase accessories for my Spectra pump. I paid $45 to get fitted for flanges with Susan. I thought it was helpful. While they didn't carry the size Susan had recommended, I did order them on Amazon. The fitting was helpful as Susan recommended the Pano shape by Maymom. The size Susan recommended was 2 mm too small, so I ended up ordering a larger size on Amazon. You can go +/- 1 to 3 mm on flanges. I also bought a new cover for a My Brest Friend pillow I received on Buy Nothing. This is a great maternity and postpartum store to visit. read more

The selection was a little sparse when I visited, but COMPARATIVELY it was a gold mine of Clothing That Comfortably Fits My Enormous Third Trimester Body. I've hunted through so many department stores searching for maternity sections, and come up bupkis. But Special Addition was here for me like a true hero I managed to get most things on sale, except for the one pair of jeans I desperately needed. I can't say enough good things about this place! I became a mom for the first time in February and came here multiple times a week for the first 3 weeks of my babe's life! I got fitted for nursing tank tops and bras (don't just order blindly from Amazon) for great support while breastfeeding. I also met with one of their lactation consultants, Susan. She is amazing! Long story short, she set me up for success when we were having trouble latching at the beginning and saved our breastfeeding journey when I was 2 months in and getting frustrated by a regression. I love this store and the people that work here are amazing. As a first time mom, I was absolutely clueless and this place served as an amazing resource for me. This place is a maternity store but offers classes and lactation services. I was browsing their classes and they offered a full day of mini introduction classes for FREE! The classes included various topics including breastfeeding basics, sleep training, child safety, tummy time, infant massage, introducing dogs to your baby, and essential oils. Because the classes were free, I didn't expect much but the classes were really helpful and a great preview for their full classes. They also had snacks and a free goodie bag with a bunch of really cool stuff. I also ended up getting my breast pump from this place as well and it was free through insurance. They have various models on display and they explained them all in great detail. They said if anything ever broke on the pump, they would try to fix it free of charge, which I really appreciate!! Lastly, I came here for two lactation consultations with Susan. She is a wealth of knowledge and has a great sense of humor, which helped since breastfeeding was hard for me. She helped create a workable plan for me and spent a lot of time with me. She also gives out her cell phone number so if you have any questions you can call her at any time. If you are reading this- book your appt with Susan right now! She is absolutely amazing and truly helped me and my 10 week old little one with breastfeeding. I had actually gone to a different lactation consultant a few days prior and had a very bad experience. But I thought I would give BF one more shot and booked an appt with Susan after a recommendation from a friend who had seen her 5 years ago and loved her. I was able to get in the same day which was so relieving. Susan was so encouraging and warm and made me feel like whatever happened it would all be ok. Complete opposite of the other place I went to. Not only did my daughter latch better under her guidance, but I got back to enjoying breastfeeding again!! She even gave me some tips for pumping that truly helped. I went from pumping .5 ounces a session (ugh!) to 2.5 ounces a session. Removing the stress I was putting on myself and knowing my daughter was latching better (therefore eating better) made me so much more relaxed that I wasn't worried about how much I was pumping and BAM! I have used their lactation service, I have attended a class and now I bought some nursing clothes. The quality of clothes are really nice, I even got a dress made in USA!!! This is a boutique, their items are unique, sure you will find cheaper things at Wal-Mart but remember to shop local to help small businesses. I truly can't say enough about this place and how it absolutely saved breast feeding for my baby and me. On our second day home from the hospital, I was having a huge amount of trouble and pain with breast feeding. I called the store and they were able to schedule a same-day home visit with a lactation consultant names Kristen. Meanwhile, since the visit wasn't for several hours yet, the woman on the phone gave me some information to soothe my engorgement while I waited for The appointment. Kristen is basically my hero! She came to my house at 5:30, and didn't leave until around 7:45. She supervised two feedings and helped with latch issues, she gave me instruction on how to soothe my engorgement, she helped me with pumping, and on and on. She gave me her personal cell and has checked up on me multiple times since our consultation. She truly changed my entire breastfeeding Experience for the better. I would not have made it through that first few days without her help and positivity. If you find yourself having issues, please call this store and schedule a consultation. It is hands-down the best money I have spent on anything baby-related, and it saved my sanity and my nipples! read more

If you are a new or expecting mom, please visit this store and make your own opinion! Multiple friends of mine have had exceptional experiences here and it came highly recommended. I only used the store, not the consultant services. I visited the store 3 times and always left unhappy. I am an introvert and highly sensitive and prefer to to explore and view merchandise on my own. I like to ask questions, but not be heavily guided by sales associates. This is not possible at this store. Every time, sales associates approached me immediately, asked what I was looking for and then took over the process - when I was seeking bras, the associate didn't allow me to look at bras on my own, but found "the best" bras for me and I got stuck in a dressing room, trying on ill fitting bra after ill fitting bra that were brought to me. I only had an hour to shop and spent the majority of it in the dressing room. She couldn't find a bra in the entire place that fit me :( I may not have either, but I would have liked to explore and look on my own. On top of all that, I did end up purchasing a hands free pump bra - again, the associate picked it out for me - and it was the wrong size! You'd think she would have my measurements memorized after all that. I had to go back and exchange it. Similar thing happened when my husband and I "shopped" for a baby carrier. My doula had recommended a specific brand and style but, again, the sales associate put herself between us and the merchandise and got overly involved in our situation and didn't appear to hear that I already had a recommendation. She proceeded to "fit" us for multiple carriers - all with my newborn baby screaming and miserable. It was impossible for me to take in all the information and make a decision with the stress of my newborn's reaction and my overall new mom exhaustion. My final experience was with the owner who pressured me to get fitted for the hands free pumping bra when I exchanged it for the right size. She said I wouldn't be able to do it on my own and was basically going to fail at trying to fit it myself. :/ I appreciate that they are trying to provide good customer service in a world where it is difficult to get help when shopping. This store is amazing. I was recommended to go here by a friend because I wasn't sure if my breast pump was suctioning properly. Special Addition checked the pressure of my pump and all the parts and figured out the exact part that was causing my pump to lose suction. I purchased a replacement part and now my pump works amazing again! They also have the cutest and most practical baby and pumping gear. Pretty much everything I order on Amazon (nursing bra, lactation bars, lactation supplements, magnetic me baby onesies) they sell in store. Special Addition is a terrible, outdated store. My breastfed 3 month old was having a hard time gaining enough weight, so I took her to Special Addition to utilize their private nursing rooms with a scale. I left the room with her gaining a few ounces after nursing, but the owner still sought me out to tell me my baby was "way too small" for 3 months and that something "just wasn't right." As a new mom, I panicked and felt very inadequate - something the owner of a specialized maternity/nursing store should never say. It's difficult to be proactive about such a sensitive topic (breastfeeding) and she made me AND my baby feel like there was something wrong with us. Very discouraging to new mothers who need a helping hand :( I ended up rushing her to the doctor who said we were just fine. Mur - Please do not respond to this comment. This is a nice place, for sure. It's geared mainly toward pregnant and nursing mothers, but it's also got a nice selection of things fathers might be shopping for, too, such as infant swaddles, slings, & clothes; books & music for kids; and cloth diapers. One of the nice things about this place is that they also have an infant scale you can come in to use. This is a great service to make available. If you need (or just want) to weigh your baby a few times a day, you can also rent a scale at a reasonable weekly rate. What that bothered me about this place is that when I did come in to rent a scale, they asked for my wife's name and contact information. I was alone and I don't wear any rings, so the presumption that I was both heterosexual and married bugged me a little bit (surely they know unmarried and non-heterosexual couples also have babies, right?). A week later they called my partner to remind us when the scale was due. This struck both of us as weird since she was not their customer. She neither rented the scale, nor paid for it; in fact she didn't really want it in the first place. I asked them about this policy when I returned the scale (again, my partner wasn't there). I was told they've just always recorded all transactions under the mother's name, because sometimes they have to call women and tell them a special order nursing bra has come in.* I suggested that maybe for pan-gender transactions (like scale rentals) they could just treat the person in front of them as the customer, regardless of sex or marital status. I suggested that not all households have a mother, and they said that they didn't mean to cause offense (the common refrain among people who give offense but don't want to apologize). Anyway, they can do what they want, but it doesn't strike me as the best policy to either presume all parents are married heterosexuals or to basically tell your customer they are invisible to you (they still took my money, though). It turns out you can also rent baby scales from A Baby's Best Start, which isn't actually that far away from Special Addition. The rental rates are actually lower, and (based on a phone call with them) the customer service is better. *Not a joke, that was their explanation. read more

I can't say even about this place. Susan ( the lactation consultant) is always there whenever I have questions and concerns. She saved me from a painful breastfeeding experience at about 10 days and diagnosed my baby with tonic bite reflux and recommended a chiropractor for her treatment. I have seen her twice and she is always there with suggestions and recommendations. She is very calm and patient and an excellent listener. The staffs are very polite. I highly recommend Susan and this place for your maternity/ nursing requirements. read more

Such nice folks work here! I love that it's a family owned store- a mom-and-pop operation and their daughter also works there- AND I love that they truly care about having a space to learn to feed a baby. I got my pump here (insurance reimbursed). What's nice about getting the pump from SA is that I can bring it in to check to make sure it's still working correctly. The pop of SA was efficient in checking the pressures and accessories of my pump. I also appreciated that he and his daughter talked to me about other things that could be affecting pumping problems- and they were right!! I liked that Herb clearly knew a thing or two about lactation and was so matter-of-fact. Susan came to our house to help us out with nursing about 6 days after birth. She was calm, supportive and informative-- all I could hope for when I was so low on sleep and extremely worried. I ended up not using nursing bras, but have friends were grateful of SA's support (pun intended) in finding the right fit. read more

I just gave birth to my second son 13 years after my first who I breastfed. Needless to say there is always room for refreshers and updates to the new trends and rules of breastfeeding. My new son latched instantly but managed to get a few shallow latchesthat tore up my nipples and I was on the verge of giving in to the pain. I sought out a solution and decided to see a Lactation specialist, my Pediatrician suggested Special Addition. I called and they were able to get me in the same day, this was important based on the state I was in. They booked me with Kelly and let me say she saved my life!!! I mean she really saved me from a breakdown. I even cried to her about the pain I was in and she empathized as she had been there before as well. She showed me a few small tricks that saved my nipples from being anymore damaged and suggested triple nipple cream to get me on the road to nipple recovery. Needless to say I was able to feed just a day later with little to no pain, all the while my nipples were quickly healing. Kelly called to follow up and see how I was doing and how it was all going. We played phone tag a few times but she offered her cell/home number to make sure we connected and we did. She answered all my follow up questions and said she was always a phone call away with any future problems questions I may have. I absolutely can't thank her enough. Breastfeeding was so important to me and to think I contemplated giving up. #onehappymom Oh and Kelly provided me with a form to get my insurance to reimburse the low cost of $95 for the consultation. Win Win in my books, even if my insurance doesn't cover it! Helpful Tip: take all of your breastfeeding tools with you i.e.: "my breast friend" or pillow, your breast pump and all its parts (we were able to determine my flanges were too small and she allowed me to try out some others like a slanted flange I was unaware even existed) Lastly if you are concerned your LO is getting enough of your milk supply there is also a feeding room and a scale to use at any time to check weight before and after feedings, it measures to the tenth of an ounce. Just walk right in and use at your leisure. I highly suggest this great place, wished I would have taken time to look around more at their retail because all I walked out with was the new flanges I really liked but I will be back there for this purpose alone. Do your self a favor and book an appointment as soon as you are in question with breastfeeding. I wished I would have known about them at the first issue and not waiting to last agonizing minute. It is an amazing resource of experts, classes, and products, and we are really lucky to have a shop like it here in Austin. I feel qualified to give this review because I have used multiple services and had an excellent experience each time. As a first-time mom, I quickly found myself overwhelmed by breastfeeding upon returning from the hospital. When my baby's doctor told me at our first appointment to start pumping, a friend who gave me her pump (I know this is an "official" no-no, but I'm convinced it's not a big deal) recommended Special Addition for replacement parts. The store is on the other end of town for me, so I called around to see if I could get parts close by. No. This is the only place in town that keeps everything in stock if you need it that day. I called the store and they held everything behind the counter for my husband to pick up. A few weeks later, still having trouble with breastfeeding, I was googling for a lactation consultant and found Special Addition offers these services as well. In fact, I called my ob-gyn, a large and popular practice, and my nurse said they refer their patients to Special Addition. I met with Cheryl Heymans, who did a very through assessment of me and my baby, improved his latch, answered all my questions, wrote up a detailed breastfeeding plan, and followed up multiple times by phone. (These services may also be covered by your insurance, and they offer all the information you need to fight with your insurance company about it - they don't file themselves.) They also offer classes, everything on breastfeeding to cloth diapering. I took one for preparing to return to work, which covered everything about pumping and bottle feeding. It was a small class and the teacher was excellent. She also offered to make herself available for follow up. I also bought a nursing bra there, and regret having purchased my other bras at Target and Amazon. Their selection is more expensive, but ladies all know it's better to have a few expensive bras that have a great fit than a dozen cheap uncomfortable ones. Plus, you get one on one fitting service. In conclusion, visiting Special Addition is more than going to a store. It is accessing a resource of knowledge for yourself on a topic that can be very complicated and difficult, and is literally the most important thing you can do for your baby. read more

This store is great resource for breastfeeding moms--espeically first time breastfeeders. They have nursing bras and clothes, pumps, and plenty of other things for bf. They also a small but quality selection of carriers, baby clothes, burp clothes, etc. They women were very knowledgeable and incredibly friendly. I knock off one star because they don't carry a underwire nursing bras. I'm a 34F when I'm nursing and without the underwire there aren't many bras I find supportive enough. Such a bummer. Will head to Nordstroms. I did purchase a bra I thought would work, but as I've worn it and really hate it. It looks so frumpy. But at $60 I'll live with it for the next year. read more

I had an excellent experience at this store as I prepared for our first child. The ladies are so helpful with recommending maternity clothes, nursing bras, baby gear, etc. and all the items I bought I use a ton! I scheduled time to meet with Kristen before the baby arrived to go over breastfeeding basics and then met with her afterwards (just a few days after the baby was born) to work on techniques and latching. Today a crazy thing happened. For the first time ever I couldn't wait for my 10 week old to wake up from his nap so I could breastfeed him. I've been breastfeeding since day 1 but had low supply, thrush (ugh!), and latch issues. ...Always something keeping me from having this amazing experience so many other women talk about. Kristen, an LC at Special Addition, helped me through all of that. I had 2 consults with her probably about 1.5/2 months apart and saw her a couple of times when I went in just to use the scale (my 2nd favorite thing about SA!). It always felt like chatting with a friend who happened to know a lot about breastfeeding. The staff and specialists at Special Addition have been incredible throughout our breastfeeding journey. A csection and tongue/lip ties were initial hurdles. And I fed for a month with a shield and felt so accomplished when we were finally able to get a great latch. A few months after returning to work, my supply dropped. Special Addition helped me continue to successfully pump by helping me troubleshoot concerns with my pump and select the right supplements. Additionally, meeting with Kristen helped me formulate a better pumping plan and feeding guidelines for daycare. I bought a Luna Lullaby pillow from Special Addition and was not happy with it. I went in to return it (with receipt) and was told pillows are not returnable. I asked why I wasn't told this at time of purchase and the owner said "we don't have time to tell every customer what our return policy is". She also said they have pillows in the nursing room to try, but no one mentioned that at time of purchase either. Also, when I went in to purchase the pillow, the customer service rep had no idea how much the pillow cost, what covers they had, and just seemed generally unknowledgeable about their merchandise. If you need baby products, opt for BuyBuyBaby..they have excellent customer service and a hassle free return policy. I will never shop at Special Addition again. An absolute great resource for new parents. Especially moms who are breatfeeding or attempting to breastfeed and having issues. I've had appointments with Cheryl, who is very knowledgeable and has Great follow up. Susan who is very nice and patient; for a frazzled new mom that can be really comforting. I did not have an appointment with Debra however she is frequently at the store and offered great advice over the phone. Muranne (spelling?) and Herb were super helpful as well and great to work with. I recommend this store to all my friends and family who are having a baby. The products do seem to be Medela heavy however, they are open to recommendation so if you prefer a product (say honeysuckle bags over Medela or Lansinoh) they will look into the product and if it is good start carrying it. The owner and staff are always helpful, knowledgeable and kind. Customer service is outstanding, whether they are testing my breast pump and accessories to ensure parts are working as they should be, fitting me for a hands-free nursing bra and hava sling, or providing refresher courses in sling wearing as needed and at no cost. Lactation consultants on staff kindly answer all of my questions and give me helpful advice and information. It's obvious that staff strive to provide outstanding customer service, even over making a profit. On a few occasions, staff actually discouraged me from buying items I may not need. Finally, the new store on Burnet is spacious and beautiful and is equipped with a nice, private nursing room and other private rooms for breast feeding consultation. Everyone here has been extremely helpful and knowledgeable during the crazy time when I've had a newborn. I've had help with nursing bra sizing, and utilized the baby carrier exchange (you can buy a demo model of baby carrier, try it for a week, and return it for a refund minus a $10 charge). In addition, the in home lactation consulting was indispensable after I had huge troubles breastfeeding my baby. My baby had very low blood sugar at birth so she had to have formula within the first hour after she was born. This kept her alive so I'm grateful, but made it harder to breastfeed because she became used to the bottle right away. Sadly the hospital's lactation consultant was no help at all and I struggled to breastfeed. My baby was losing weight and I was having to continue supplementing with formula after going home from the hospital. My pediatrician recommended a lactation consultant and she pointed me to Special Addition. After learning techniques from the very helpful Kristen, I'm still exclusively breastfeeding at 9 weeks, and my baby has gained so much weight! I was really in despair in the few days after I left the hospital because I had no idea how I was going to get out -- the in home service was really my savior. Finally, this may be a little silly, but this store is the place I took my baby when I got out with her for the first time alone. It was surprisingly nerve wracking to take her out by myself, but I knew here I could nurse her in private if I needed to, and it helped me get comfortable getting out with my baby. I didn't expect taking her out in public to be so (mentally/emotionally) difficult but this store felt like a safe place to take her! read more

I heard of Special Addition when a friend of mine mentioned them for nursing bras. Being a longtime shopper of Petticoat Fair, I didn't think much of it. However, after my daughter was born, I had an AWFUL time breastfeeding. I had to give my daughter formula which I was very loathe to do, as my plan during my whole pregnancy was to breastfeed, not only for the health benefits for my baby, but also to save money. I went to Special Addition for the help of one of their lactation consultants. Susan helped me immensely. The consult room was very cozy and clean, not at all intimidating. Being a new mom getting little to no sleep and experiencing a lot of pain at the hands (mouth) of my nursing baby, I was in rough shape. Susan walked me through the issues I was having breastfeeding, drew up a breastfeeding plan for me to take home and even made herself available by email and phone. After some ups and downs, my baby and I have breastfeeding down pat, and I have Susan to thank for helping make it an enjoyable experience for my baby and me, instead of something to dread. Special Addition has become my hub for everything I need to feed my baby comfortably - nursing tanks, hands free pumping bra, etc. I also took the cloth diapering class there as well, and it was very informative and helped my husband and I get our minds around something we had no experience with. We owe a big thank you to Special Addition for resolving our breastfeeding issues. We saw Cheryl Heymans, Lactation Consultant Extraordinaire. After just two sessions we were successfully breastfeeding. Cheryl's commitment to her clients is amazing. She offered follow up phone calls which we agreed to and she proceeded to call us every few days asking how things were going and offering up more helpful advice. It'd been weeks since we'd seen Cheryl and she still called with more help and advice. She truly went above and beyond what we believed was already a great offering in the store. By the way, the rest of the staff at SA is very sweet and helpful. Bronwyn helped us weigh and re-weigh our daughter before and after feedings in the store and always with a smile and a helpful hand. I agree with another review that states, "You're either treated like a princess or a criminal". We live an hour from the store so I called and worked with a sales staff that was kind enough to put together a few things she thought might work. 2 out of the 4 did but when my husband went back to return/exchange some items they saw a spot on one of the bras and at first said they could'nt take it back. After talking with me via phone they said, "They'd have to talk about it." So while my poor husband waited, they chatted. It took a while but they agreed to take back the bra. It was such a sour experience I had my husband return everything. I was told to make sure they came back perfect and that is what I did to the best of my ability, I didn't make the spot in question. I did however take a shower and get new pads before trying anything on which is above what people do trying them on in the store. I'm appalled at the lack of customer service and insinuating judgement, You lost a $209 sale that will go to someone else. I found the same bras online for less. Buyers beware, The return policy only gives you back 100% for store credit or 80% how you purchased it. Thankfully we got back 100% of our whole purchase but the lady in the store while my husband was didn't. I shopped this store 4 years ago with my last baby and thought I could count on them again. Our baby came premature and we were not expecting to need a breast pump so quickly. We called the closest rental location near the hospital, one of the retail big-boxes, but their rentals were all checked out. The lactation consultant at the hospital recommended Special Addition so we gave a call and glad to find they were fully stocked. They were pleasant to deal with and I was able to complete the transaction over the phone and have someone pick it up on our behalf since we were obviously tied down at the hospital. The pump was hospital-grade (the exact same unit they have at the hospital) and the condition was clean, looked brand-new, can't say that for the other stores, you usually have to give them an alcohol/disinfectant sponge-bath before use. Pricing was also reasonable for the rental, no more than any other store, cheaper than most. And even better, since these are the same models from the hospital you can keep the hospital-supplied hookups and re-use them on this pump, save you a lot of money on re-purchasing all the tubes and containers. They saved us a lot of worry with this last-minute pump rental! We'll probably sign up with one of their lactation consultants in the coming month. I imagine we'll be using their baby weight regularly as well, don't think any other stores offer an in-store baby weight. P.S. I just read through some of the other reviews and the low-star ratings seem to be overly-sensitive for one reason or another, but that's the nature of Yelp. I hope that never deters customers from going here because it's definitely a family-oriented environment and that's the kind of warm support you need when you become a father/mother and all the challenges that come with it. read more
