However the service we received was unlike any of the other wineries we stopped at in the area. When we arrived at 3:30pm we were greeted at the door by a young woman who immediately told us that they would be closing at 5pm so we may not have much time for a tasting. An hour and a half isn't enough time for a tasting? After sitting in the large open tasting room, we engaged in conversation with her about the wines and the winery. When asked how she got into the business and started working at Hilt, she said she just wanted something that she didn't hate, and had applied for the job a couple months ago. When we asked about the white wine they had, she mentioned its tannins. Tannins in white wine? Given that we were only interested in trying the whites and the majority on the tasting menu were reds, we decided to try a glass of the white on offer instead of doing the tasting. The pour was about 2 ounces. It's too bad that the service was so impersonal and uneducated because the winery and the wines seemed so impressive. We would have loved to learn more but decided to cut our losses and leave.

While…read moreall advertising would suggest this is a friendly, female-focused winery, all staff members our group encountered seemed to be the exact opposite. Our group of 5 all ordered $30 wine tastings where we were not allowed to actually select the wines to taste. When I asked what wines would be included, the server identified several on the menu and unfortunately only half of these ended up being included in the final tasting. As our group began to enjoy our tasting, the staff unexpectedly took our heater away to warm a 2 top table without ever asking our group if we still wanted the heater (we did, it was 50 degrees out). One person in our group brought out a leftover bite of baguette from a previous stop in town and was QUICKLY alerted by the owner with the wag of a finger and note that "they sell food there and she can't bite her own food." The owner waited until my friend put her small bite in her purse before walking away. When checking out, the server told us we'd need to pay via one card only (fine) and proceeded to watch closely as my friend chose her gratuity option (rude). Although we selected a nice 20% tip on the screen prompt, the actual math shook out to a 24% tip without us ever agreeing to it. Short story: - Too expensive - Rude - Performative, white-centric feminism - Not worth visiting when there are so many other great options close by

Good pours and all the wines were low alcohol. They try and make them as natural as possible and are smaller batches than bigger wineries and labels. Friendly service as well. We purchased one bottle and could have maybe purchased a couple others but we opted not to. I will also mention that there was a slight push to try and buy bottles at the end. Stopping short of saying "you should buy some bottles" but a lot of "nudges" and "hints" about buying bottles. We would definitely come back to try other pours.

My family has been members at Sanford for almost 25 years, so this review is long, long overdue…read more It's hard to put into words just how important Sanford has been to our family over the years. We've celebrated almost every major milestone here, and it has always felt like a second home. Watching the winery evolve while staying true to its roots has been incredible. One of the things we always loved about Sanford was the winemaking style under Steve Fennell. When Trey Fletcher took over, I'll admit we were a little hesitant. It's hard to see change at a place that means so much to you. But wow, Trey has absolutely won us over. The wines have evolved, but they still capture everything that makes Sta. Rita Hills special. There's a clear Burgundy influence, with thoughtful whole-cluster use that adds complexity and structure, but the wines never lose their sense of place. They still showcase the vibrant fruit, acidity, and character of the region while maintaining the backbone to age beautifully. Of course, great wine is only part of the story. The hospitality team has always been fantastic, and every visit feels warm and welcoming. Whether you've been coming for decades like we have or it's your first visit, Sanford has a way of making you feel at home. There are plenty of great wineries in the Sta. Rita Hills, but Sanford will always be the one that means the most to our family. Twenty-five years later, it still feels like home.

Once you enter the property, you're greeted with a cute tasting room. Very cozy, a log cabin vibe with the fireplace and plush seating. Main tasting room but as it was beautiful out, we needed the experience outside. First off, Both Neil and Lynn were absolute dolls. They started us off with some crisp bubbly, perfect for the wether. Both were the sweetest and so easy to talk too. It was like we were already friends and popping over for a chat. During our experience, Lynn took over and made sure that we were here for an enjoyment. And let me say, it was AMAZING.... She was the funniest and sweetest person. Laughing and smiling while making sure that each and every tasting was explained and enjoyed. To add to the experience, a charcuterie board was served. The selection of cheese, meats and sides added to the tasting. Can't go wrong with it. Staring off with the reds, let's just say there were none that needed the dump bowl. Everything was so rich, bold and full body and flavorful. One after the other, the wines were excellent. And finishing off, it was the white. Normally you start with whites and work to the reds but their version, it was good. Bottle after bottle was amazing with each pour. The explanation of each was so helpful. Not only the wines but the properties was beautiful. The garden seating area with tables tucked in with the lush garden looking out to the vineyard. Then the wrap around patio with more seating. Also perfect for the chilly weather, the outdoor fireplace. It was beautiful as the leaves were changing to the nice rust and red and glistening from the sun. The whole experience was amazing. Both Neil and Lynn are magician in their work. The service was excellent, wines were outstanding, friendly staff which are like friends chit chatting with each other. It made everything worth it.
