We had a phenomenal tasting experience at Spear Vineyards today! We tasted two amazing Chardonnay's, two classic Sta. Rita Hills Pinots and a delicious cool climate Syrah. Claire is the best and always makes you feel like you're at home when you're in her care. The view is spectacular and the tasting room is gorgeous. The wines match the quality and ambiance of the property. Make an appointment and go see Claire! She's the best! Spear Vineyards & Winery is a family owned, sustainable and certified organic vineyard nestled in the heart of the Sta. Rita Hills Appellation.

After a wonderful tasting and lunch at Presqu'île and on our way to SeaSmoke winery, we booked a tasting appointment at Spear. The location is beautiful, the Barn is a pleasant space. The tasting was however a total disappointment. We were only 2 couples, one indoor, one outdoor, on Saturday afternoon and but we felt rushed us through the tasting. I tried to slow things down by going to the bathroom but as soon we tasted the Syrah, the sale associate came with an Ipad to take our order. We bought few bottles and left. We came for a pleasant time...we got the door to door salesperson experience.

Fantastic newer winery in the Santa Rita Hills, absolutely worth a visit. Having visited Santa Barbara Wine Country for our anniversary each year for the past 16 years, my wife and I have pretty much hit every single winery in the area. We have compiled a list of favorites over the years and Spear has just launched (pun intended) to near the top of our list because of the overall wonderful experience we had this past Saturday afternoon. Setting up our appointment for the appointment only tasting room was as simple as placing a call from a mile away while we were visiting Foley. Both of the staff members working the absolutely beautiful tasting room were friendly, helpful, accommodating and generous. The tasting fee is a bit high at $20 per person, however, you must remember that this is an appointment only winery with very limited production. We even got to enjoy an extra glass of wine while sitting in the extremely comfy leather sofa looking out through floor to ceiling glass windows over the vineyard. We could have stayed even longer than we did. The tasting room as alluded to earlier is absolutely breathtaking. It's a converted barn of an old dairy and it's sleek and modern with great light pouring through the previously mentioned floor to ceiling plate glass windows. There's also a great, big terrace next to an old grain silo that overlooks the vines as well. Like at Demetria with its incredible vistas, I could easily spend an entire afternoon here. Spear currently pours 4 wines, 2 Chardonnay & 2 Pinot Noir...I'm no expert but the chards were the stars here; I feel perhaps that the Pinot vines need some maturing but we certainly did enjoy all of our tastings. We ended up buying a couple bottles of the '16 Estate Chardonnay ($35) because that was our favorite. We've already spread the word about a necessary stop here to fellow wine-minded friends and we look forward to following Spear's growth and success in the years to come. We also look forward to another visit soon!

Definitely a highlight of my trip! Happy we made a reservation to this gem of a spot. Not only was the view amazing, the wines were great and service top notch. Jessica took great care of our group and made the experience that much more memorable. She didn't miss a beat with her knowledge of wine and bubbly personality. I highly recommend this as a must visit. I will be back! Cheers!

***Please do not let the few amount of reviews keep you from visiting Spear, it is simply amazing*** My wife and I arrived to the private entrance of Spear on the Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend. Although we did not make a reservation, we were gladly greeted by the attendant, Carmen. We were blown away by the property as we made it up the driveway. The main tasting room is housed inside a fully renovated barn, complete with wooden vaulted ceiling, an aluminum bar, floor-to-ceiling glass windows, and a lovely patio overlooking the vineyard. The owners did not compromise any small detail within the tasting room, and it shows. Carmen began us with two tastings of their chardonnays, Syrah (our favorite!), and Pinot noir. Spear's wine is exceptional, we even brought back a bottle of the Syrah (not as spicy and complex as warm climate Syrahs). Had we known how awesome Spear was, we would have tried to setup a tour; we definitely will opt in next time! If you are looking to avoid the big crowds and take in a different experience, look no further. I did ask why they had so few reviews, and Carmen explained they typically only operate by appointment and the tasting was still quite new.

If you like Pinots and Syrahs, take a trip to Lompoc. The vineyard itself is nothing short of stunning. Once upon a time it had a dairy barn, and the silo is what remains. The wines, poured by Lily, were a perfect complement to the views. The chardonnay is aged in new oak so it doesn't have the classic buttery flavor, but still has the familiar color.

However the service we received was unlike any of the other wineries we stopped at in the area. When we arrived at 3:30pm we were greeted at the door by a young woman who immediately told us that they would be closing at 5pm so we may not have much time for a tasting. An hour and a half isn't enough time for a tasting? After sitting in the large open tasting room, we engaged in conversation with her about the wines and the winery. When asked how she got into the business and started working at Hilt, she said she just wanted something that she didn't hate, and had applied for the job a couple months ago. When we asked about the white wine they had, she mentioned its tannins. Tannins in white wine? Given that we were only interested in trying the whites and the majority on the tasting menu were reds, we decided to try a glass of the white on offer instead of doing the tasting. The pour was about 2 ounces. It's too bad that the service was so impersonal and uneducated because the winery and the wines seemed so impressive. We would have loved to learn more but decided to cut our losses and leave.

The furniture and artwork were both stunning as well, definitely recommend sitting by the fireplace. Our host was lovely, knowledgeable, and super accommodating of the timing before our next reservation. She explained the wines perfectly and definitely got us thinking about the different tasting notes. We left with a few bottles of the 2005 Sangiovese, it was an off-menu recommendation from our host and this wine had an amazing aroma, didn't even need to take a sip to know how special it was (but obviously did)! All said, an amazing experience, beautiful wines, knowledgeable staff - definitely recommend!

Good pours and all the wines were low alcohol. They try and make them as natural as possible and are smaller batches than bigger wineries and labels. Friendly service as well. My only critique are the stools, they were really uncomfortable so sitting there for the whole tasting was not fun. We purchased one bottle and could have maybe purchased a couple others but we opted not to. I will also mention that there was a slight push to try and buy bottles at the end. Stopping short of saying "you should buy some bottles" but a lot of "nudges" and "hints" about buying bottles. We would definitely come back to try other pours.

I'm not one for white wines and I even loved their white varietals, so that should speak volumes! The staff member during our visit was very friendly and had excellent taste in music. The pours were generous as well, more so than a usual wine tasting! It was fun to sip wine and they even let us pick a vinyl to play while we visited. We were so impressed by the wine that we even joined their wine club. I can't wait to receive the first shipment! I'm also already planning our next visit to this tasting room, which is located in an awesome one road town. Located across the street from The Alamo Motel, where we stayed for the weekend, so we just walked across the street for our tasting. It really doesn't get much better than that! I definitely suggest making a trip to this charming wine tasting room and finding out for yourself what a treasure it is.

We had a reservation with some friends who had their wine back when they were married. As it was a first for all of us, it was very exciting to experience it with them. Mid week which was pretty quiet. Most of the wineries are during the weekdays. The property is off one of the back road from the main highway 246. Once you enter the property, you're greeted with a cute tasting room. Very cozy, a log cabin vibe with the fireplace and plush seating. Main tasting room but as it was beautiful out, we needed the experience outside. First off, Both Neil and Lynn were absolute dolls. They started us off with some crisp bubbly, perfect for the wether. Both were the sweetest and so easy to talk too. It was like we were already friends and popping over for a chat. During our experience, Lynn took over and made sure that we were here for an enjoyment. And let me say, it was AMAZING.... She was the funniest and sweetest person. Laughing and smiling while making sure that each and every tasting was explained and enjoyed. To add to the experience, a charcuterie board was served. The selection of cheese, meats and sides added to the tasting. Can't go wrong with it. Staring off with the reds, let's just say there were none that needed the dump bowl. Everything was so rich, bold and full body and flavorful. One after the other, the wines were excellent. And finishing off, it was the white. Normally you start with whites and work to the reds but their version, it was good. Bottle after bottle was amazing with each pour. The explanation of each was so helpful. Not only the wines but the properties was beautiful. The garden seating area with tables tucked in with the lush garden looking out to the vineyard. Then the wrap around patio with more seating. Also perfect for the chilly weather, the outdoor fireplace. It was beautiful as the leaves were changing to the nice rust and red and glistening from the sun. The whole experience was amazing. Both Neil and Lynn are magician in their work. The service was excellent, wines were outstanding, friendly staff which are like friends chit chatting with each other. It made everything worth it. To say we'll be back, that's something to really look forward to. The wines, excellent....
