Afternoon wine tasting was perfection on a sunny weekday afternoon. Brent was super knowledgeable about their wines and the history of the winery. I've been a wine club member off and on for years. Their Pinots are second to none and the rest of their wines aren't too shabby either. My favorite white is their Chenin Blanc. There are two tasting rooms- one at "the Shack" which is a rustic barn and the other room just up the street, which looks like a traditional tasting room. Note: the tasting room up the street from the Shack has the Pinot tasting menu, the Shack has Cab Franc, Syrah, and red blends. Tastings range from $20-25 and the staff are super friendly. Our visit today was on a cold rainy day. They are still doing outside tastings due to COVID but there are heat lamps and they provide blankets :) They also have free wi-fi! Nice winery, a little further out, so they close at 4. We arrived at 3:30 and they were really nice to accommodate us and we were able to get through our tastings without feeling too rushed. Tamara was pouring for us and could not have been nicer. She had a great knowledge of the Foxen brands, and wines as a whole. The really drag of the experience was the family with three small children that were running wild and screaming the entire time. Apparently, the people were wine club members, so unfortunately nothing was said to them and it really did color the time we spent there, as well as the table next to us that we could overhear complaining. read more

Foxen Vineyards is another Foxen Canyon winery that you should for sure give a try. The wines are all excellent, but what really brings us back is the family friendly atmosphere... and when I say that, I don't just mean it's kid friendly (though it TOTALLY is!), but that the staff treat you like family! I think that's the shining light here. But again, they are kid friendly (though the bees sometimes feel a bit more present here than other places we've been) and even have some winery dogs that love the kids and to be pet! There is a field close by that the kids can run around in while being in view the whole time. Definitely give Foxen Vineyard a visit! read more

We did the Sideways self-wine tour this past weekend. And Foxen was our only five-star experience. The staff was great... very knowledgeable on the wines, history of the winery and the area, and overall friendly. The location and outdoor tasting location are truly lovely. We had the pinot noir wine tasting. The pinot style here is very bright fruit that almost tastes underripe. Because of the different grape lots used in these wines, combined with the fact that they all had a very sharp and bright fruit, I belive this is an intentional style. However, it is one that my wife and I did not love. We liked some of wines more than others. But we did not love any of them. However, when we were done, I asked if I could try the Cab Franc, which I saw in another tasting. Our server obliged and I loved it so much I bought a number of bottles. The place was so great, and the service so pleasant, we still loved this tasting, even though we didn't love any of the pinots in the tasting. I did love the Cab Franc though. read more

I have visited Santa Barbara wine country a few times now. The last time was a decade ago and I remember I loved Foxen. At the time, it was little more than a barn with a bar/tasting room. It was very low-key and the wines were excellent. I was excited to bring my friend here who had never been to wine country before. I was pretty disappointed. Not only did we not like any of their wines, save for a Pinot Noir which was decent, we weren't given much to taste compared to the other dozen wineries we visited, and we weren't exactly made to feel welcome. A decade ago, you could breeze in, chat up the sommelier, try wines for a few bucks and keep the glass. Now, you have to make reservations and you're stuck sitting there for an hour or so. The wineries charge you way more, you have to stay there for an hour or so, and you don't get a glass to keep. I'm not complaining here - all wineries do this now - make sure you plan for over an hour at each place you visit. The other wineries do a better job managing this new way that Foxen. These days, you need a reservation. You pay a lot more than you used to for the privilege of trying their wines they want to sell you. You are also stuck there for an hour, usually 90 minutes, instead of being able to keep your own schedule. You also don't get to keep the glass. Now, most wineries make up for this by doing two things: 1) Give you more wine with each pour. You're paying for it, for sure, so most places give you a much more generous pour than before. 2) Being welcoming and informative about their wines. Most places are passionate about their wines and will happily tell you about them and are really nice about it all. At Foxen, we were late for our reservation. This is because it is nearly impossible to predict how long you'll be at any one vineyard, how long the drive is to the next place, etc. It is quite stressful which is the opposite feeling you want when driving around beautiful Santa Barbara. But yes, we were late. Our waitress/sommelier said they'd be closing at 4, so we had like 45 minutes. We didn't get much to try of each wine - it was like pre-covid amounts. Our waitress was not as helpful or pleasant as all others we had met that week. And since we had been "scolded" for being late, we tried to leave as fast as we could - and when we did leave, there will still MANY people still seated enjoying the day. We didn't enjoy many of their wines, and possibly our treatment there colored that experience. I did pick up a bottle of Pinot and if it holds up I'll note it here. When Foxen was a shack, it was fun to visit, because it wasn't some overblown giant winery trying to cater to the masses. Now, Foxen has become a now forgettable destination in this gorgeous area. They have built out all these large buildings and have forgotten how to treat their customers and their wine. Skip this one on your visit. read more

Like our review, most are 5 stars but the two star review from the group who showed up late (near closing time) is just not justified. Yes these days you need a reservation--not everywhere but foxen makes it clear that it is preferred. Yes these days it costs $20-30 to taste a flight of wine and you usually don't keep the glass (thank goodness--I have dozens from decades of wine tasting). The setting was marvelous, the service was impeccable and knowledge of the servers was extensive. Glad they had a charcuterie plate as wine with food especially in such a relaxed atmosphere is always preferred. As most places, some wines were very good and some not for us--that's why there are so many different types of wine for different taste preferences. We hit Foxen for a tasting on the afternoon of Christmas Eve, because my Aunt and Uncle in Santa Barbara are fans, but mostly because they were the only winery open. The wines were middling, although I liked the Chardonnay (and my wife and I usually hate Chardonnay). Boy, this used to be a great place. What happened? The service was fine and friendly enough. We were seated at a picnic table behind the tasting room (at 7600) and the grounds are covered in cedar wood chips. Immersed in the strong odor of cedar. How on earth can patrons taste wine with this strong odor surrounding you? Overall the landscaping was not very well cared for. General ambiance and presentation here is poor. I do like a rustic environment and I prefer the shack to this location. Wine temperatures were served too warm. It was also a warm day. Seems the issue here is management or ownership is neglecting the customer experience. Coasting . . . One final annoyance is the standard tasting menu says Rhone & Burgundian varietals on the header. I used to come here 12 years ago when the vibes were more chill and less "file them in and out." They sat us under a tin awning full of tables that were facing a wall. Meanwhile, right up the walkway were open tables overlooking the vines and fields. Perhaps they're trying to save pourer time from walking to and fro?? Although I did see multiple pourers. Worst of all, the wine was meh - super mediocre. I think they've gone down hill in quality and are riding on their long term reputation, which is sad. But, yeah, I won't be back again. Got to hang out with my family for Mother's Day weekend at this spot. My review is more focused on the staff as believe it or not I didn't drink the wine ( don't like wine), so was just chilling with the family while they were wine tasting. Back to the staff though, super friendly and attentive and from my non wine drinker POV they were on it when catering to my mom, brother and fiancé. We were there for over an hour. My brother brought a cheese and meats plate from another business which is recommended as Foxen only has wines. Love love love! We went to both the old "shack" tasting room as well as the newer one down the road. Both had great wines, the shack had greater diversity and the new tasting room focused on pinot noir. We joined the club. Every wine we tried, whether it be rose, pinot, whatever were all great. The new tasting room had a beautiful outdoor seating area, live music, flowers, etc. If you are going to join a wine club in this area, consider this one. It's not a big name like Cambria, or owned by a celebrity like Firestone - but after all, it's all about the wine. read more

Blame my pallet on the 3 star rating, not me ;) We should have hit the Shack once learning of it, I prefer big reds and I'm no longer a fan of Pinots and never have cared for Syrah so nothing struck my fancy here. I did however leave with a bottle of their 2012 Chardonnay Estate Grown-Dry Farmed Tinaquaic Vineyard. I believe it was the second white we tried and it's perfect for summer. I don't usually drink white and as the day went on there were a couple other whites that I actually preferred to this bottle. Next time, we'll hit 7200! read more

The wines were good, but would say the Pinot Noir was my favorite having the strongest bouquet. There's an interesting story about the logo. We have visited Foxen multiple times in past years. The wines were good enough to bring a few bottles home to enjoy. After this year's visit, we are probably going to be taking it off our list of places to revisit. Wineries are always at the mercy of the climate as well as things like wildfires--and most recently the covid-19 pandemic. However, after visiting other wineries in the area, this winery might be suffering from another issue: poor winemaking. As it was the first stop of a four winery visiting day, there could be no other possible reason other than their wines are just not as good as they used to be. We even tried two tasting flights--a Pinot flight and a mixture of red and white. The whites tasted weak and in some cases tasted like an ice cube had been left in the glass to melt. The reds were unimpressive and again some almost tasted watered down. As always seems to be the case, I made a comment that I would like the last red on the list as it was the most expensive (a $75 Cabernet Sauvignon). I was right, it tasted pretty good, but not $75 good. I would hate to count this place out just yet, but if the upcoming year's wines are a good as their current bottles--we won't be back. Foxen was one of the highlights of my trip to the central coast. Their large winery is located closer to Santa Maria than Los Olivos on Foxen Canyon Road. The winery has two tasting rooms - the original shack with a very rustic atmosphere and the modern room just down the road. I chose the modern room to experience their Pinot Noir selection. Finding a group of industry people in the room was a good sign I was in the right place. My Pinot flight was excellent with several vineyards from all over the region to really get a sample of their large offering. The winery has many other options, but the Pinot flight is only available at the modern tasting room. The wine is rather expensive, but you are paying for real quality. The modern room is open with lots of windows and a great staff. There is a patio with the requisite super cute winery dog and lots of room to Rhone. If I had more time and had not already sampled other wineries, I would have loved the shack too. The tasting fee is proportional to the price point of the wine and is rather steep, especially with a six bottle refund. This is a recommended spot to spend the afternoon. Foxen has two distinct tasting rooms with many flights, allowing you to visit several "wineries" without traveling very far. The Pinots are worth a stop, but the overall winery is worth your time and more. read more

I started this review a month ago and then forgot about, but as fate would have it, on a return trip from NY to Solvang to get married, we popped in here. It's nice when people remember you and they did. Gave us a nice congrats, an extra pour and some of the regular staff came out to say hello. This vineyard is a bit of a distance down the Foxen Canyon Wine Trail. There are actually two tasting rooms within 300 yards a part. There is the larger, newer tasting room that offers many Pinot Noirs and the older original tasting room or what they call "the shack". This location has bigger bolder wines that are equally delightful. Try their new Cabernet Sauvignon "Los Potreros", one of the best cabs in the region! At the new tasting room they have a nice quiet picnic area, and comfortable tasting room to enjoy. They have clean restrooms and are pet friendly. Tasting fee is $15 per person. The "Shack" location is literally in a shack! No heaters and no air conditioning, basically an exterior tasting room with a roof! The small shack does have charm , character, and was Featured in the movie Sideways! They have some Tables just outside the shack, but I wouldn't say this is a good place for a picnic. One being the main tasting room located at this address, the other a little further north that they have dubbed "the shack" which served Bordeaux style reds while the tasting room showcases their pinot's and whites. We arrived around 11 on Saturday to a quiet tasting room. It was gorgeous all around with beautiful flowers and landscaping. They offered two different flights. One was all pinot's and the other a mix of reds and whites. Since there were two couples we were able to try both. I loved being able to taste different vineyards of Pinot's. Each one with it's own distinct profile. Our hostess, whose name I've forgotten, was extremely pleasant and informative. I wouldn't hesitate to visit this boutique winery again! read more

I have visited countless tasting rooms and wineries all over the world and, when I say that Tamara was one of the best hosts I've ever had the pleasure of tasting with, I am not exaggerating. She was extremely knowledgeable about the winery, the region, and the wines. Her passion and enthusiasm were contagious. She was both welcoming and informative and she really elevated the whole experience. The setting was great - though the wind was blowing pretty fiercely the day we visited. The wines, across the board, from the whites to the rosé to the reds (Pinots and Syrahs) were excellent. They are thoughtful wines of balance and restraint that clearly show the differences in the vineyard locations and clones. They are not cookie-cutter wines that all taste the same. We bought over a case of wine! I couldn't recommend this winery any more highly. What a great place! We'll definitely be back anytime we are in the area. read more
