SCAM I gave all my insurance information over the phone Aetna Medicare Advantage Duel Eligible & Medicaid. I was told they take my insurance. Aetna Insurance lists in network. No Co-Pays. When I arrive for initial consultation I was told $33 Co-Pay. Office person double checks cause I told her 'I have no Co-Pay'. What a waste of time. I scheduled six weeks of therapy sessions with Spear at this location. When I arrived for my first session the person behind the counter told me I had called and cancelled all my sessions. After my hand therapy session at the 67th Street Spear, I was sent to 14th to meet with Allison Landy (Alli) for a custom-made splint. She was awesome, friendly, understanding, and patient. In addition to the splint that was created in front of me, she taught me a few other hand exercises and helpful tips. I want to give my highest possible rating to therapist Jane Yu at Spear Union Square. I had a nagging shoulder injury (from weight lifting) that just wouldn't go away. Jane helped me via massage and a dozen different exercises designed not just to ease the pain but to strengthen the whole shoulder/spine area so that the painful area would no longer be doing all the work. In less than a month the pain was 80% gone, and with ongoing work at home I'm sure it will be healed completely. I used Google to find a physical theraphist in NYC for a torn meniscul in my knee. I saw Spear among the dozens of private PTs and centers, but quite frankly, the fact that it was a 'chain' with 20 locations it NYC turned me off. I assumed that the quantity of qualified people needed to staff so many locations might impact the quality of PTs. Boy was I wrong! Aimee Bitzel (PT,DPT,MS) did the initial evaluation during my first visit, and she was amazing. She was patient, knowlegable thorough, and has a lovely personality that made her a pleasure to work with. She did a series of manual minipulations testing my range of motion and muscle strenghth and took me through a few exercises that address my knee injury, making sure I understood how to do them correctly. She also listened to other issues I'm having, as I'm getting older, and gave me valuable insight -and some additional exercises so that I could begin to address them. I also can't say enough about Spear's facility. The Union Station location is beatifully designed, bright, large space - and the team there all seemed to be top-tier. While this is a large chain, the focus on individual care made it feel more like a boutique. This is the first Yelp review I ever posted - but I was so impressed with Aimee and Spear in general that I wanted to share my experience. Spears beat going to a depressing hospital-based physical therapist, or individual practice in a small office-like space by a mile. I found out they have a location just two blocks from where I live. Union Square if a very long walk, and since after the evaluation, I believe a 'technican' will be guided by me through my exercises, so I'm going to give this new location a try. read more

I went to SPEAR to help me after I sprained my ankle. I worked with Ben and I felt like he really helped me improve my mobility in a very short time. He was reactive based on how well I responded to the prior therapy sessions and even adjusted each session based on my individual goals (returning to full physical ability, including being able to do high intensity workouts). He also changed up the routines to keep it interesting and to keep me engaged and challenged. I think that without his help it would have taken me much longer to recover. Additionally, the facility was always clean (especially important in these Covid times), and the rest of the staff always helpful and polite. It never felt too crowded, even on the busier days. I would recommended SPEAR and Ben in particular to anyone who needs PT. read more

I came to Spear 14th street on recommendation from my doctor and she definitely sent me to the right place. I was having tremendous pain in my left foot and had trouble walking. My physical therapist, Meghan Hartigan was amazing, she diagnosed the problem and created routine, which I did each session, designed to strengthen my leg. It was a long hard road to begin pain free and Meghan helped me both mentally and physically to make it to the end. My interactions with the staff at Spear 14th Street were excellent, everyone was smart and supportive. I highly recommend Spear 14th Street to anyone needing physical therapy. read more

This business seems to make its money through double-booking and over-billing. I was told my fee would be $20 per session and I paid it, yet they have now sent me a bill for $681 for three visits - that is in addition to the rather hefty fee that they were already paid by my insurance company. As for the service, the Yelp reviews for the various Spear locations are surprisingly contradictory: 1 star or 5 stars. Are there two levels of service? Is there an alternative Spear universe? The reports of neglect comport with my experience several years ago. But I gave Spear another chance; I went three times recently and found the same culture of inattention. At my final recent visit, I was on the bike warming up before my 3:30 session & someone was on the bike next to me. At 3:30, my PT got the guy & started doing manual work on him. Yes: double-booked. The PT sent me to stretch my calves & then to do some other exercises on my own, which he would set me up w/, then he would leave me alone as he tended to his other client, the one w/ the shared appointment time. As in my other 2 sessions: except for 15 minutes manual work, the PT or aide would set me up to do my exercise & then leave me on my own. With rare exception, no one stayed w/ me to be sure I was doing it correctly or to encourage me. They would be with other patients, or - much more problematic - just schmoozing among themselves or working on their laptop, telegraphing how unimportant the clients are to them. Although I mentioned to the PT that I would expect someone to be working with me and he assured me that would happen, it did not. That is demoralizing to an injured person. The many one-star reviews of the various Spear locations mentioning this same phenomenon interspersed with five-star reviews - w/ nothing much in between - is notable. This location only has two reviews and one got five stars even though the reviewer says that his initial experience was unsatisfactory. read more

Do not waste your time coming here. I made an appointment 2 weeks out and the morning of the appointment I received a text they had to cancel. After some back and forth, they were able to reschedule me for later that week. Today, I left work early to make the appointment and upon arrival was informed my appointment was never made (even though I had email and phone confirmation). The only options I was offered was to 1. Wait and see if someone did not show for their 7pm appointment 2. Come back the next day. Why would I waste another day when they couldn't get it right the first two times. Clearly their patients time is not a priority to them. To make matters worse my appointment was with the "owner" of the business. They should be embarrassed. read more

Had knee surgery mid august and have been here probably a dozen times since. I was hesitant at first because I've never rly had good pt experiences in the past, but have been consistently impressed by them. I've been seeing Ryan and Marivi, and both are great. Rly happy each time I leave Spear. Despite knee surgery I was back to squatting in 6 wks! They have fun exercises every time, do tough massages on the knee which is good for getting rid of the swelling, and even remember personal stuff about me. Unfortunately, my session/experience with Emma Codman (7 East 14th Street NY, NY 10003) felt extremely controlled, bias and somewhat not authentic. I am doing my best to stray away from using words like "racist" and/or "prejudice" but I will acknowledge, that the experience, without a doubt, felt as if I was being "Profiled" and ushered though a system with little regard to basic human rights. As an African American male with a tall stature, being informed that a male chapperon (Eric) will be present for the entire session did not land well with me. I was not giving latitude to choose a gender, nor was this information provided prior to the appointment. Where as I would have happily declined. And not traveled to manhattan, pay for valet parking, pay a co-payment fee to Spear etc. Ironically, considering I'm a prior patient of Spear, I would have imagined matters to be handled more respectfully/diligently of patient privacy rights, Hippa Laws, confidentialty laws etc. Especially, since the PT was aware of my physical ailments and past trauma. To not ask a patient if "gender" matters, highly goes against several laws. Furthermore, to make matters worse, I was never treated according to the referral/prescription I provided. Although, Emma Codman and other Spear staff members made it clear that she specializes and treats males with Pelvic Floor Dysfunction. Instead, I was advised to engage in a physical regemen on a gym mat, along with several other patients, in an open public space, within the facility. Which only excerbated my pre existing conditions of physical ailments. Undermining the entire session considering I was there to see a PT with a particular skill set worthy of treating males with Pelvic Floor Issues. -It all makes no sense. There seemed to be no consideration towards what I present with, in terms of injuries and medical conditions. Nor was the Doctor's recommendations, the information within my medical chart, history, prescription etc acknowledged. The session literally and completly ruled me out as a patient with rights, and individual liberty seeking treatment. Imagine being examined, on a medical table, while in full attire, during Covid. Luckily, I did not ride in via NYC subway, as I would have been covered in germs yet advised to lay down for a half hearted attempt of examination. I intend to follow up on this matter appropriately. read more

Spear has been an extremely rewarding and well-worth it experience, all the staff were exceptionally friendly and welcoming (I was genuinely happy to go every time and sad when I finished treatment), and the care was high-quality. My PT, Jason Kang (14th street), was the first person who was ever actually able to explain why I had chronic back pain, and set me up with long-term treatment/prevention that truly helped; my back pain is next to non-existent, for the first time in 10 years, and i'm grateful every day. Would highly recommend these locations, PTs, and Spear overall to anyone who's looking. I went to Spear PT - Union Square location for my knees. I was assigned to Ben Kraus and Chaya (a student intern). Chaya handled me most of the time under Ben's supervised. One time I was also assigned to Georgina due to my schedule availability. They all were very friendly, professional, courteous, and knowledgeable (from the receptionists to the therapists). My knees had been bothering me for almost two years. I tried many thing from chiropractic to PRP therapy. And they didn't work until I went to Spear PT. I was going to Spear for almost two months (twice per week the first month and once a week after). They showed me a few exercises I need to do at home for 20 - 30 minutes per day. The exercises are simple yet very helpful. Now, my knees are improving so much (I feel like 90% better). They were really concern about my well-being instead of all business. They saw I was improving a lot and told me that I did not have to keep coming to Spear for it was not necessary. I really appreciate that. I was so grateful for all their help. I was glad I went to Spear. I highly recommended Spear PT - Union Square. Chaya - Congratulation for finishing your school and I wish you all the best with your career journey in PT. Went for PT for a few visits. I want to recommend Melanie, who was great. She is very knowledgeable, knows all the tricks and modifications to fix you. My only issue with this place was totally personal and might not bother everyone. It's REALLY busy (because they are good) so the PTs and OTs work on multiple patients at once with the assistance of some techs, and also teach you how to do a thing and say, "Okay - do three sets of 10 and I'll be right back." Only sometimes they get delayed helping another client and don't come right back, so you're waiting around. I prefer more personalized, focused 1:1 therapy. It's also quite chaotic at peak times because there are lots of staff, lots of patients, and they give everyone these little timers to do their exercises so they're constantly beeping, which I found super annoying. They treat EVERYONE here so you'll never be the oldest, youngest, worst injured, fattest, skinniest, most out-of-shape, least coordinated, most stroke-damaged, or the fittest athlete. It's very welcoming and un-intimidating in that sense. So it's not like they're doing anything wrong at all, but if you prefer a calmer setting, and full-time 1:1 attention for your appointment, this isn't that. If you do go here, go to Melanie! I just completed 3 months of PT at Spear for neck, shoulder and bicep pain. Georgina is excellent! She definitely knew her stuff, easily modified exercises when I wasn't ready for them, but gradually built me up to doing more and more. Even tho PTs deal with more than one client at a time, she regularly had her eye on my positioning and how I was feeling. The reception desk people were all very professional and nice. Just finished nearly 8 months of a shoulder disaster + recovery, under the wise and experienced eye and hands of the wonderfully talented Maravi Lao! She stood by me through 2 months of searching for a diagnosis as the shoulder swelled to a big ball at Christmastime, then took over in a different capacity to bring back mobility and strength after the surgery that was ultimately necessary for a fracture and torn rotator cuff. Shoulder recovery is notoriously slow and painful, a potentially quite discouraging process, but Maravi never gave up. Her steady encouragement and miraculous massages made me look forward to my twice weekly PT sessions. For weeks they were the only thing that made my arms stop hurting. Gradually, it worked! I went to this Spear location for about 20 sessions to rehab sports-related knee and shoulder injuries. Though this was my first PT experience, it was a good one. I worked with Ryan, who I felt worked hard to be responsive to my feedback about what seemed to be targeting the pain and what didn't. He was also very flexible about scheduling (and quick to respond to emails), which I appreciated. I noticed that one of the reviews below referred to the "double-booking" of patients, which concerned me when I was researching where to go for PT. But speaking to friends who have done PT with other companies, I understand the practice is common, and it didn't negatively affect my experience. To give a sense of each session: it would start off with about 10-15 minutes of Ryan stretching me out and loosening up the injured area; then about 35-40 mins of exercises; then 10 minutes of icing or heat. About 30 mins in, Ryan would start stretching out the next patient and would give me the exercises and check in as I finished, but the first time we'd do an exercise he'd show me how to do it and critique my form. So if you want a therapist who's doing nothing but watching you for 100% of your session you won't get that here, but I didn't think that was necessary for my treatment and am not sure how common it is in the industry. Overall it was a very good experience, and I'd definitely go back to this location if I need PT in the future. Agree with the 1/30/2020 review that they work hard to try to address any problems that come up and are deserving of your business. read more

From Felicia at the front to Lauren my Occupational Therapist and Ioana my Physical Therapist, this place goes above and beyond to take care of you and help get you back on your feet. Lauren noticed my pain level during our sessions and took the initiative to reach out to my wrist specialist and they worked together to change my treatment plan to help solve things. Felicia at the front took the time to ask me about something I couldn't get covered by insurance, she took the initiative to make calls in her team and helped solve it for me, total relief and weight off my shoulders. Iona who has to put up with me three days a week for months is always personable and friendly, and manages to keep things interesting by always having a new and semi-fun plan for the day ready when I walk. She's kept me from getting bored, kept me from giving up and has kept me motivated. She's been a fantastic and patient resource for my endless questions. I can't believe the progress I've already made, thanks to her. Every specialist I've seen has told me I couldn't be at a better place, and it's where they send their patients. I've even met patients who are medical professionals there. Everything they say about this place is true, they are the best. read more

I had a fantastic experience at SPEAR, especially with my physical therapist, Ben Kraus. He was wonderful. I came in with a break in my foot and a sprained ankle and was nervous about my recovery. He explained the recovery process and what we'd work on to regain my strength and range of motion which put me at ease. He asked me about my goals and I could tell he considered them when designing my programming. Ben is extremely knowledgeable and a highly skilled PT. Great people and serious about their business. To be honest, my experience wasn't great. They were short staffed at the time, and I didn't feel like I was getting great service. I filled out their internal survey and expressed myself. A few days later, Michael, who runs the program called me and he apologized. He assured me he would remedy the situation and they were in the process of hiring more staff. Running a small business is VERY difficult. I had a great experience at Spear Union Square in these last four months when recovering from my revision knee replacement. The first knee replacement didnt work and I felt great pressure to use every tool in my arsenal to have this new knee stand every chance for success. Luckily I had a better surgeon but I also had great PT at Spear. I worked with Ryan and Ben who were fantastic and caring. What was different here from previous PT places was that it wasn't the same PT workout each time I was there. They kept challenging me with new exercises that would change things up and they were creative in their approach. And they listened. My knee has gained strength and I have hope that I will recover.
