I have been working with Melissa Ho for the past month for tailbone pain (coccyx pain) and pelvic floor area. She is amazing! The pelvic floor therapy includes both external and internal work. Melissa makes me feel very comfortable during all our sessions and always checks in to see how I'm feeling / responding to the work we are doing. I am currently pregnant and she takes this into consideration as well. I have noticed significant improvements in my symptoms since I've started working with her. Even on flare up days, I feel motivated to push through because of progress we have made. I am excited to continue working with her. Carl is educated in the practice of physical therapy and has earned a doctorate in the field. I found him to be not only knowledgeable, but also compassionate and personable. He was constantly checking in to see how I was feeling during my exercises, plus his joyful personality added to my mental and spiritual well-being. This facility was recommended by my Orthopedic surgeon and I am really happy that I chose this facility. Facility is very clean. Receptionists are very friendly and always try to accommodate me with my busy schedule. My PT Melissa Ho is assessed me thoroughly in the initial encounter and led me step by step to make my ankle feel better. My therapy focuses on balance and core strength to prevent further injuries. Melissa always starts checking my ankle first, and help my stiff joint stretched. Every visit Melissa shows me different treatment plan and I've been improved a lot as my treatment intensity also has been increased. Melissa exactly knows what I need to work on. This is one of the best Physical Therapy places that I've been to. I always get injured due to sports and I always like to try different Physical Therapist out there to see who the best is. My Orthopedist recommended me to try this place because they are awesome. From the receptionist all the way to the Physical Therapists, they are all great! Super friendly environment and the best part of it is the PTs are not rushing to do their job. They take their time and explain to you what they're doing and why it's necessary to do the exercises. I was a patient at SPEAR in fall 2011 with Dr. Laura. I'm young & healthy but had been having some major back issues and didn't quite understand why. Sometimes the pain would be so bad that I couldn't walk. Really scary. After visiting SPEAR, I'm in a much better place and haven't really experienced anything like I had prior to going. Dr. Laura knows her stuff. She's really personable, has a sense of humor like yours truly, and helped me to understand that in order to improve my back I had to strengthen my core (i.e. the dreaded muffin top). I'd definitely recommend this office. Everyone's really nice down to earth including the receptionists! And they're very flexible with scheduling which is helpful for busy professionals. P.S. I've been attending PT sessions at the East 56th street SPEAR location for almost four months. I've had knee and hamstring issues on both legs, but I thankfully found the perfect spot and lucked out with an awesome Therapist. The reception staff is always super friendly and accommodating. The aids that assist are always awesome. My therapist, Dave Block (or Dr. Dave) remembers all of my injuries, active/sports history and goals. He has also gotten to know me and knows how to push me. David treats the full patient and not just the injury. I play touch football, softball and take rowing classes, which I did not want to stop doing and didn't have to. Dave knows more about my weekly activity routine than I do sometimes and really takes the time to explain to me what I am doing with each new exercise and why it's necessary to do certain exercises. Since working with Dave, I've definitely seen great improvement with my leg/hip strength and far less knee pain. As an added bonus I hear his voice nagging in the back of my brain when I realize I've been sitting down at my desk for too long or when I realize I'm slouching at my desk and I correct my terrible posture/sit up straight. I can't believe I am actually typing this, but I have FUN when I go to physical therapy. What a strange sentence? Dave's a great therapist with a good sense of humor. I went there for a tough ankle sprained and was seen by David Block. I immediately received a much better explanation of my sprain than my orthopedist had bothered to give. He created a plan for recovery, answered all of my questions, and slowly but surely, I saw improvement. From the receptionists to the assistants, everyone is super attentive and thorough. On the positive, the therapists are qualified; however, they seem extremely overworked. They handle multiple clients within the hour. Maybe because its early morning. My first observance post my exit: Day 1 the therapist sent me the wrong person's schedule. Also, when they have people provide their first impression, but they fill out the responses with everyone on staff observing so you wouldn't dare say anything negative. Day 1 homework exercises were on pink highlighter and hand drawn. Day 2 the therapist was busy and had to have the technician help me, but she didn't appear focused and able to clearly delineate what I was supposed to do. In fact, she actually had me do the opposite exercise of what I needed for recovery. Honestly, even the tech was helping other clients at the same time and it felt like instructions were given on the fly. Day 2 - On the positive, when you get to work with the physical therapist , they are knowledgeable and friendly. If your need is basic and your a fast learner, this is definitely easy and probably good for you. Overall, its all about comfort, for me I prefer a more sanitary PT environment. I constantly have to ask for a towel to put under my head. One time, someone had their feet up and then I saw another person go on the same place with their face. The place is friendly, the fee is relative to what's out there in the contracted rate. Due your own diligence. read more

This is a horrible place, the only time that the PT spends time with you is while making a ton of appointments and then good luck getting time with a PT. All they do is make you do crappy generic exercises and nobody is monitoring or correcting you. You are really on your own as each PT has a multitude of patients booked for the same time slot. Even the PTA (assistant) is too busy to actually spend any time with you. I kept hoping that things would improve but I ended up actually hurting myself even more as nobody was monitoring my exercise moves. Also, I paid in full for the sessions at the outset but they have sent me bills after I stopped going for sessions that I already paid. It was a sheer waste of time and money for me, in fact, I feel that I should not have paid a dime for anything as I was literally on my own at the therapy place. If I can do it all on my own from the get-go, why do I need a PT? My therapist was Melissa Ho and she was only interested in making appointments and would run away as soon as I got there. A couple of sessions they also told me to leave half an hour early as there was nothing more to do. Cleanliness also leaves much to be desired. The workbenches were always dirty and sweaty. Disgusting but also unsafe in these Covid times. This place is a racket. They are not interested in helping people recover and get stronger. They only want to make money and give you nothing at all. To say that I trust Abby DeAngelis with my life would be an understatement. When I first went to see Abby at Spear it was because I was having severe issues with my knee. Abby's technique is about the full patient - not just the ailment or issue. She takes it all into consideration and guides you into recovery - always going above and beyond with her patients making sure that the healing process is as pain-free as possible. Once I had my meniscus repair surgery Abby was there every step of the way pre-and-post-surgery to ensure that I recouped and regained full capacity. A year later after a black ice incident which resulted in a combination of a fractured shoulder, torn rotator cuff and broken arm she assessed the long and painful road to recovery and eased me into it, through it and again, to full capacity and recovery. I highly recommend Spear at 56th St for physical therapy. After months of intense pain and dwindling flexibility, I came to Spear for help addressing labral tears in both hips. Since working with Abby, I no longer have pain, have increased my strength and flexibility, avoided surgery, and can participate in all the athletic endeavors I enjoyed prior to my injury. My therapist was excellent but the format at Spear was too hectic for me. I wasn't aware that the therapy is not "one-on-one" until I inquired at the front desk and was told the hour is divided into 30 minutes with the therapist, then 30 minutes with a PT tech. Too often, even the tech was helping other clients at the same time and it felt like instructions were given on the fly. I wish i could have the same therapist and PT tech in a different facility, where these wonderful professionals might have the chance to focus on one client at a time. read more

Although the physical therapists mean well, they are dealing with multiple patients at a time (even if they claim to give only one-on-one appointments) and you get almost no personal one-on-one treatment. They give all patients the same exercises and don't help them progress. Luckily, I decided to switched to a different PT practice after wasting months of my time and money. They told me that SPEAR is notorious for having too many patients at a time. With the help of my new PT I had to basically start from the beginning to treat my injury. read more

At the beginning of the year, I was diving into the world of dance without any thoughts on how it would affect me physically. A large chunk of my schedule was dedicated to dancing and it put a lot of strain on my body. Not taking care of myself led to very weak knees. My friend who had the same issue recommended me to get some physical therapy and I gave Spear a call. Amy, the receptionist, was a huge help and had a lot of patience in working with my insurance. I worked with Dr. Bhavik Sheth and quickly developed a great friendship. Bhavik spent a lot of time educating me on what I needed to be aware of while I am trying to take care of my body, as well as helping me work through my pains. We went through many procedures carefully to make sure I was recovering. There were exercises we worked on together, as well as exercises he told me to bring home and do on my own time. Bhavik then suggested me to Dr. Ana Wu, which blossomed into another great friendship. Ana showed me many stretches and exercises that were tailored to the dancer life and his/her daily activities. Together, I think they made a great team due to their dance backgrounds to help me achieve a speedy recovery. They are super personable, and create an environment that feels like we're just friends grabbing a drink or some dinner. They are flexible with their schedules/appointments, and you really feel like you're being taken care of. If not for these two, I probably wouldn't be dancing anymore...So I am extremely thankful for all their hard work while making feel so at home. They took care of me in a way I never experienced with medical professionals, and I would recommend anyone who needs any work done on their body to come see Dr. Sheth or Dr. Wu...or better yet...both. read more

I love coming to Spear! It is such a great environment with amazing therapists, techs and staff. I have been working with Kirsten for a few weeks now and progressing well. I enjoy her energy, positivity and am in awe of her vast knowledge and determination!! She's the best! The techs are also awesome! Everything about Spear impressed me, from the reception ( Nancy, you are wonderful) to the aides ( friendly and helpful) and most of all, my PT, Kasey. She was truly awesome for a few reasons. Not only did she remember all of my injuries, active/sports history and goals, but she also got to know me and my workout style and preferences. She listened to my ailments carefully and addressed any concerns I had, as well as being realistic about my recovery time and progress. She was also just straight up fun to hang out with, as everyone was. I was definitely sad to leave.... But the proof is in the pudding. This review is long overdue. Back in February I slipped on a patch of ice and dislocated my shoulder. It was pretty bad. I came to Spear as it was close to work and I could leave on my lunch hour. I loved every single visit to Spear and my therapist Kasey was amazing to work with. I like to do Trapeze as a hobby and was worried I'd never be able to do it again. Kasey assured me that we'd work together to make it happen. After months of hard work, I was back swinging in no time. The best thing about Kasey was that she got to know all of her clients. I felt like I was hanging out with a friend after a while and actually looked forward to going to therapy! I'd definitely recommend Spear and definitely recommend Kasey, but the entire staff was amazing, too. read more

I injured my lower back earlier this year and needed physical therapy to improve my strength and mobility. Enter SPEAR. Tracy was assigned as my primary therapist and she is phenomenal. She starts every session with a smile and a joke or a story about her weekend. She listens to my questions and concerns and tailors her approach based on how I feel each day. Most importantly, she is skilled. Within a few weeks I noticed significant alleviation of pain, followed by improvement in my strength and flexibility. I am now close to my pre-injury condition and have long resumed running, lifting weights, yoga, etc. The SPEAR methods really work and I could not have done it without Tracy and her A-team, which includes Jason and Chelsea. While the therapists here are all first rate , the issue I have is with the management. BEWARE if you are on Medicare !!!!!!!! They are supposed to let you know when you are reaching your maximum for the year. They did not , despite my asking on a number of occasions to be alerted when I was near my limit. I only found out when I went to another facility in another area a few months later, and was told I had used up all my sessions. While Medicare will allow you to go over your yearly limit with proper documentation, that is not the issue. The issue is they had a responsibility to alert me and let me make the decision to continue or not. Management never followed up in contacting me after I brought this to their attention. So be forewarned to ask when your limit is coming near. read more

I had shoulder/trap pain, for over 2.5 years, from sitting in front of the computer for an extended period of time daily, so i decided to go to PT for it (should have gone earlier). Started here in late September 2013 - January 2014. I had insurance which is the only way to afford this place. My regimen was 1 day PT 1 day massage for the first two months, then tapered off to 1 week PT 1 week massage. The place is small, but just recently renovated. You do need to schedule in advance to get the timings you want, it is busy after 4 PM weekdays. All the staff members are great, knowledgeable and helpful. Recommend - Kelli for massage and Sarah and Rachel for PT. One thing important to note is that the treatment length is up to you, meaning, until you feel better and or dont feel like the treatment is helping you have to make it a point to mention that or stop and try something different. I mention this because i had asked the PT i was working with when do we start decreasing the visit and see a difference, and there is no hard answer to that. Its up to you and what you feel the treatment has done for you. After my time here, i did learn some exercises and moves to help relieve pain. The five things i will recommend is, have plenty of water, stretch in the morning, change your computer desk layout - use ergo chair, ergo keyboard, ergo mouse, get a foam roller (black - stiff), maintain with a massage monthly. read more

Last August I visited SPEAR to rehab my knee. I've spoken to many friends who did not recommend PT, but in my case, it was exactly what I needed. Patrick Watson worked with me twice a week for about 5 months and helped get me back to top form for running again. I can't write enough positive comments about my experience. Firstly the staff was incredibly friendly and competent which made the initial experience of scheduling and filling out paperwork pleasant. Then the therapist are skilled and overall great people. I always felt like i was in great hands and had a blast with the chit chat. Rachel (my therapist) was always precise when figuring out what soft tissue to work on and adapted my routines to my current state/progress. The proof of her work is that my shoulder is as strong as it could be (taking in to account that i have a capsule tear) and i will be playing basketball this summer. Amelia Rivera reassured me that she would get me back bowling and doing all the fun things I love to do. Amelia was very motivating and patient with me throughout my rehab. i was referred to Spear PT by my doctor at HSS , and having been in PT twice, I asked my PCP who he recommended. His words: "go to Spear, those kids really know what they're doing." And boy is he right! However, for me, the real asset and what truly sets them apart, is the physical therapy staff. Caitlin is the consummate professional: she is very knowledgeable, caring, courteous, and genuinely interested in me and my care. I am now (2017) a post hip surgery pt patient at Spear and last year was a patient for a few months for a back problem. My principal physical therapists are Dr. Bhavik Sheth and the studio's clinical director and Spear co-owner/founder, Mr. David Endres. Both of them are terrific--highly qualified and knowledgeable, very concerned with patient improvement, and, as is every staff member at the 56th St. location, extraordinarily nice people. As a patient I've found Dr. Sheth and Mr. Endres (Bhavik and David to me) attentive and in lay terms, both REALLY know what they are doing. The studio is very well equipped and a patient gets plenty of time both from the physical therapists and their staff assistants...there is no rushing of patients and I give Spear my highest recommendation. There is a reason it has expanded to a number of locations in NYC and the reason is that it is a grade A physical therapy chain with superb therapists and everyone I've encountered at the E. 56 St. location, especially Dr. Bhavik Sheth and David Endres, are terrific! ATTENTION: I amend this review to inform all that Dr. Sheth has moved to the new Spear location on West 67th St. between Central Park West and Columbus Ave. I continue to be his patient there..the new location is subleased from the LaPalestra gym and is excellently equipped. read more

I've had mixed experiences at this place for two different injuries. One therapist was really excellent and attentive. The other was often distracted trying to serve three patients at once or chatting with other Spear staff, and I sometimes wondered how much she noticed about my progress. I'm very impressed with the team at Spear. Saw Matt and Melissa for issues with my knee and learned a lot of helpful exercises to strengthen the weak areas. Also had the most incredible medical massage from Doug. He worked through the tightness I've had for a couple of years in my calf from sciatica issues, and he worked on my it band to help fix the tracking of my knees while running. Everyone is caring, professional, and really good. Even the people at the front desk are super nice and helpful with appointments and insurance. I've only been to one other physical therapy practice before so I don't have a ton of context, but I can say they really helped me to alleviate pain and heal some weak spots. read more
