Refused to take a kitten under six months (which their website specifically states is a criteria for walk-in intake) because it scratched a staff member when she tried to pick it up unprompted with nothing but latex gloves. This is a place that says it can take injured wildlife too, which they're clearly unprepared for if they can't even handle a kitten. Be aware, this place does not have consistent hours so PLEASE CALL. Do not pay attention to Google. Also, the staff is horribly rude and incompetent. I had the pleasure of interacting with several of them and wow, lucky me. I went in on a Tuesday and I was rudely told "I don't have time for you, I have to get home to my animals" I am going to take accountability for arriving 28 minutes before they close, but I work. I was told to come back the next day and had my eye on a certain animal so I took off of work and went back. Completely closed!! Closed for "meeting" nothing online, nothing in their site, just closed. Why would an employee tell me to do that when they weren't even going to be open? I have the answer, it's because they don't care or they're incompetent. I ended up going to friends of strays and had a wonderful experience. The staff cares. For the sake of all the animals, I hope this location closes or management pays closer attention to their staff. read more

They paired me with my new best friend!! I recently adopted my first cat from the SPCA and every step was great. The volunteers in the cat area were friendly and helpful, the paperwork was easy, and I got a new best friend out of the deal. The whole shelter is clean, volunteers and workers can be seen caring for the animals throughout your visit weather its cleaning, taking some dogs outside for walks, or speaking to potential adopters. they're doing great work here. read more

I drove here all the way from Tampa to adopt a specific kitten that, unfortunately, was being adopted by someone else as soon as I got there. So I decided to look at the other cats and ended up adopting 2 cats that get along great and are great with people. They disclosed that one of them had an upper respiratory infection that was treated and resolved while at their facility. They said the other cat never had a URI or anything else and had a clean bill of health from them. Both cats shared the same cage, and at the time, I didn't know a URI was contagious among cats. A few days later, the cat that they said never had a URI started showing symptoms. I took her to my vet and left the office with a $800 bill. The vet said this cat had a very high fever of 104 degrees and that the cat was already sick by the time SPCA spayed her and all that made her condition worse. This means that by the time I adopted her, the cat was already suffering from the illness for several days. The vet then told me a lot of shelters lie about the health condition of the animal and sometimes even lie about their ages to try to get them all adopted because of overcrowding in the shelters. He did confirm for me that the age of the cat was accurate, so there's that at least. Now I have to take my sick cat back to the vet again today to see how she's doing with her fever, and the vet asked to see the other cat too. So both cats are going to the vet. I can imagine I'm going to spend several hundreds more for them to get better. And mind you, I spent $200 at the SPCA to get them both adopted, so already these cats are costing me $1000 out of pocket. I understand this is a shelter, and what you see is what you get. But the vet said the cat they told me was completely healthy and never got a URI clearly had an URI for a while now which means they either knew and lied about her health condition or they didn't care enough to find out. Just be wary of SPCA when adopting. You might end up taking home a very sick animal, and once you adopt, you are completely liable for their care. SPCA doesn't fully disclose everything about their animals. UPDATE: Editing my review to add that now the other cat whose upper respiratory infection SPCA said was resolved is still sick. All confirmed by my vet. He said her URI was never resolved and her condition is now much worse. She likely has pneumonia now and the vet thinks she may even have lung disease. I may have to put this cat down only a week after adopting her from SPCA. I am sitting with her now while this cat is struggling to breathe and this is absolutely heartbreaking. She goes back to the vet tomorrow to see what else they can do for her. SPCA you should be ashamed of yourselves. You lie to the public and put very sick animals up for adoption. I will NEVER ever adopt from you again and will tell everyone I know to avoid your facility. You are lucky I signed a waiver or else I would definitely be seeking legal action against you. You deserve to be sued and be put out of business for good for the way you treat you your animals. You're a HORRIBLE organization. I am submitting my complains to the better business bureau because this is unacceptable and just WRONG. read more

This organization is awesome and does a great job caring for their animals. The staff was helpful and friendly. Lots of commotion going on but they handled it well! The best way to do it is make and appointment, go in, and ask all your questions there. The girl and women that helped me pick out a rabbit were awesome and they let me hold whatever one I caught my interest and I couldn't thank her enough for that because I got to bring home cookie! He is so sweet. At first he hid under my bed and was thumping his feet but by the night he was out playing and doing binkies!!! Not only that but the dogs they have here are so awesome! I went to one of the animal shelters to donate things and play with the pups. It took so much resistance to not adopt 4 of them! The staff in the kennels are mostly young kids, but they were helpful enough. The girl at the front desk was knowledgeable and very friendly. They only had a handful of dogs on the site so I was surprised to see more of a selection when I walked through. It's the quietest shelter I've ever been to, not a single dog was barking for the first 20 minutes. Though their cut off time is 5:30pm, they do not actually abide by that time. We were ready to select an animal 20 minutes prior to the cut off and were originally told that we were getting said animal. After an hour and a half drive we were told by staff that they didn't have time to do our adoption and to come back another day even though we made sure to be there and select an animal well before the cut off time. I'm all for adoption, but I will never do business with SPCA due to their unprofessional services. Since we were told we were able to adopt, we informed our 4 year old that we were taking home 2 pets, to be told 10 minutes later that they aren't able to do it. read more

They never call you back to let you know anything and when you reach out to them animal ID numbers names and phone numbers cannot be located in their system somehow. They told me it was because an information release report was not filled out. Not only does this sound bogus but it's the responsibility of the intake employee to bring this to the client attention when offering the callback service. This review is just for the indoor dog park available on Sundays. $5 from 11:30-1:30. Nice idea for pets to play, socialize and run around- especially in the summer when it's too hot outside! Awesome employees to keep all the dogs in check. They made sure everyone played nice. I guess I misread the info though online and thought the park would be over 2000 square feet. I had high expectations lol. Instead it was just in one room of the facility. Not a lot of room for the dogs, so they limit how many can come inside at any given time. My poor dog felt trapped though and didn't have fun lol. And she wouldn't pee or poop since there was no grass. So not for my pup but maybe yours would enjoy! She likes to run around and there was just not enough room there. I kept cringing and waiting for a dog to run into the wall or each other. read more

I'm completely pro-rescuing but we adopted a cat and 12 hours later had to take her to an emergency vet where we found out that she was dehydrated and on deaths door. We have already paid almost $2,000 to keep her alive and we have no idea how much more we'll have to pay if we want to keep her alive. We were told she was 1 and had a clean bill of health. None of that was true and now I have no savings left and the cat still might die. Our hearts are broken. So very disappointed. I rescued 2 puppies on February 19th. I was overcharged $100 adoption fee for 1 of the puppies. That puppy was also sick, yet the SPCA vet signed off on a clean bill of health 2 days before the adoption. How is that possible?? The puppy has kennel cough and apparently has had it for awhile because it is now a severe respiratory infection. He got the 2nd puppy sick too because it is severely contagious. I've had these puppies 1 week and have spent over $2,000. This was my first time adopting a puppy from SPCA, but it will definitely be my last. I tried to call, but it is impossible to talk to a live person. I did get a return call to refund me the amount overcharged for the adoption, but nothing regarding the illness. It's like the empathy goes out the window once money has exchanged hands. I know that I signed the paperwork assuming financial responsibilities when adopting, but there should be some accountability when a clean bill of health was documented 2 days before the adoption. This is truly unacceptable. I would not recommend adopting a pet from SPCA based on my recent experience. read more

Terrible. Clearly what I experienced seems like an on going issue with this facility. I feel so bad for these animals. I've raised several animals, including rabbits horses ect. My dog of 17 years passed and I decided to see if a dog here needed a home. I immediately got a bad vibe walking in with the staff very young and completely unprofessional. Basically a 12 year old who brought a dog I was interested in. Couldn't answer any of my questions as a responsible pet owner I wanted to see what I was getting into with this dog. I am a nurse so of course I ask every health question, she couldn't answer any of them and was annoyed. Then when she brought the dog out, it was terrified so of course he pooped on the floor and she said, "he's too scared he has to go back." The most ridiculous answer when a dog needs to warm up to someone. By taking her away, you're teaching the dog reinforcement of being scared. I came home and was itching for days to see a flea jump on me. I had to bomb my whole apartment because fleas were that bad at this place. They neglect these animals and should not have ignorant children handling these animals. This is why we have so many people in this world not keeping animals. This is the worst place ever. Fortunately I kept looking and bought a dog.. it's sad because a rescue could have had an amazing home. The animals here clearly all have health issues and I'm glad I went on my instincts. We had visited this SPCA over 5 times.... In 2 weeks. We could not decide , did we want a kitten or an older cat. There were so many cats that we just could not decide, we wanted them All! (I did at least maybe not my boyfriend) lol During Some visits , certain volenteers would "push" us to "take a cat home today" that sort of made me uncomfortable and they would follow us around the cat rooms. Other then that , I felt the facilities were clean and the volunteers truly cared for the animals. The animals looked to be token care of. We finally decided on a 1 year old cat, that stole our hearts. She has brought so much joy to our home! The paper work/adoption was a great and a painless process. They had a special that month... Any cat over a year old... Was free... So I donated 20 dollars. She was fixed, micro chipped and her shots were up to date. The day we adopted her we saw over 5 cats leaving. So happy that these animals are getting new homes! Our cat , who we named Milla, had had a surgery while at this SPCA, When we took her to our vet a week later, the vet said he was very impressed by the scar and records from the SPCA OF Tampa... So it made me respect them even more. I suggest if you want a pet to check this place out! You get a fair price and they truly love the animals! read more

I made a call in to request help for a racoon that had been hit by a car and was struggling. It could not pull itself off of the street, because of most likely a broken leg(s), etc. due to the height of the sidewalk curb. SPCA Tampa Bay refused to help, because I was unable to stay with the animal. These people have their priorities and ethics completely misplaced. It's embarrassing to have to say this is my local SPCA. But, that animals impending death, due to lack of response and caring, is now on them. Sad. read more

it's a nice facility and adopted a adorable cat but there were a few issues starting with there wasn't anyone around to help with adoption once i found the cat that would work best for me. the adoption process was confusing because they didn't communicate with each other and had to walk my cat back and forth 3 times before she was actually able to start on the paperwork. additionally two days after i got my new baby home he developed a cough which my vet referred to as "cat crud" kind of the cat version of kennel cough. the workers were nice and they noticed i was in a bit of a rush and tried to move stuff along and apart from these issues it was a nice experience. read more

We just adopted a 6 mos old Australian cattle dog/shepherd mix. Very timid and shy. Sweetest dog ever. Very nice staff and easy process. If your looking to adopt I totally recommend this shelter. Highly funded facility with a very young and unprofessional staff. There seems to be no screening process for potential pet adopters. The representative that we spoke with in the back was somewhat uninformed about the dog we were interested in adopting and slightly annoyed at our question about his health and history. We wanted to be as informed as we could be about the dog's needs to make a proper decision on whether or not we would make a good fit for his new home. Our inquiries were met with a general annoyance by the girl at the front desk, who was by far the worst of the three representatives we spoke to. When we asked if it was possible to think about our potentially life-changing decision overnight, she snapped back at us in a demanding manner asking why we weren't taking him home that evening. They did put the dog on hold for us while we contemplated the decision. Unfortunately when we called the next day to let them know that we decided we would like to give the pup a new home, they informed us that they had already released him to someone else. We were very disappointed and expressed such. The representative on the phone callously declared in so many words that it was "too bad and he had already been adopted". No explanation as to why he had been released, why there was no communication about their decision, and a complete lack of understanding of our disappointment. I certainly hope the animals are treated with far more respect and care than we were. We will be looking to adopt elsewhere. I would encourage would-be donors to tour the facility anonymously before making the decision to give. Know where your hard earned money is going and demand a higher level of service for the voiceless animals who need a good home. read more

I cant give 5 stars under the sad circumstances, but everyone were very friendly and caring. My dog past away this week as he was laying on my lap, we are devastated and not excepting this very well. I work in a very serious NICU facility and see death way too often, I can deal with newborns who are extremely sick and have never once broken down or sad, but when it comes to my dog I am not strong at all, he was my best friend and always will be, I went online and did a bit of research of what to do next, the SPCA appeared and they had some info about cremations, I knew that was my best bet for him and took him to the Largo facility, my only complaint was the wait to speak with someone took 80 minutes and I was there with my deceased dog that entire time waiting for one person that was in front of me, I was just getting up to leave when the girl came out to help. This will most definitely be my last animal ever, I don't think I can do this ever again, when all you see is sadness, tension and death where you work, I think it will be best to donate and help existing animals rather than buy another one of my own! I think the best thing anyone can do with the SPCA is of course adopt a cat or dog and give them the best home ever, but if you cant have a pet where you live or think they are too much work, I recommend taking a new dog bed, toys or anything that can help the animals they are keeping at this facility. read more

This SPCA has a wonderful system for viewing and introductions. They are well-staffed and have great facilities with a number of introduction rooms. The metal cages are open for viewing, so you can hear the kitties meow (which makes you want to take all of them home). We could tell that the animals are treated humanely and are well taken care of. We were looking for a cat and went back several times. Most of the cats we looked at were adopted by the time we went back to visit them again. Finally, we met Binks, who has (three years later) become a true member of our family. We can't imagine life without him! This shelter has a wide variety of animal species, including farm animals. They have a beautiful new adoption center/store where we purchased several items. Please be advised that if you live in a rental, you must bring your landlord's phone number for approval. Binks' adoption was a few years ago, but we were able to get a cardboard carrier from them when bringing him home. We brought an old, comfy towel to put on the bottom of the carrier for his car ride. Before we were able to take him home, they neutered him, gave him an exam, placed a microchip in him, and offered to clean his teeth....all as part of our small adoption fee ($25). He had a horrible URI when we brought him home, but we were able to bring him in for an exam and medication (free of charge) since it was within a week of the adoption. We have since moved to Arizona and adopted a second cat from the local Humane Society. We were not nearly as impressed with how HS functioned and truly missed our SPCA Tampa Bay experience. I highly recommend paying them a visit to find your forever friend. read more

If I could honestly give zero stars I would but apparently that must be too harsh? We recently adopted an adorable, twenty three pound cat at Petsmart from the SPCA. They informed us he would have been put down on that following Monday due to his age, he was only eight years old. We gladly gave some money to adopt him and took him home. He was doing wonderfully the first week we received him, he wasn't too sure of us but he began warming up. We fed him bits of chicken because that seemed to be the only thing he would touch and some milk. However this week he began to exhibit odd behavior. He stopped eating completely, drinking nothing, laying around in one spot and barely using the restroom. Then that's when he started vomiting. This morning, I woke up to my terrified mother who had been up all night with Little Suga who was barely breathing and laying in the hallway. We decided to contact the women who sold us the cat whose name is Phyllis who works for Cat Kids Rescue through the SPCA. We had documents from this company for his shots that said he was on Mirtazapine. We had never been told this and didn't have any clue what it was. I looked into it to find out that it was an appetite stimulate and it could've been used for cats with "renal failure and stomach disease" or "used as an anti-nausea for pets undergoing cancer treatments". I found this information via 1800petmeds considering he seemed to be taking this frequently. When Phyllis came to pick him up for the vet this morning, she grabbed him roughly off my lap and basically threw him into the pet carrier. She told us she'd be taking him to the vet and quickly grabbed his medical reports while storming out. Not to mention, we were blamed for this when we had no clue of what he was taking and the condition he was in. We just received a call stating Little Suga took his last breath in the car on the way to the vet. I've never been more furious and I will be furthering this case because NOBODY should have to go through this especially children. I'm extremely disappointed in lack of communication about his condition and I won't stop until something is done. read more

After loosing my cat after 18 yrs it was a difficult time without her. Then I had to decide which cat or kitten I would be happy with. I looked on the website and found two possibilities 1) being a 6 mo old female named Ellie and 2) a 2 yr old female named Alley. Everyone at the facility was great. I got a chance to hold each one on my lap and Ellie won me over. She didn't want to leave my lap. I took the little one home and after not finding her for a day and a half she came out and she is with me all the time. She likes to snuggle and likes her belly to be rubbed. She took to the litter box and her water and food dishes without any hesitation. She is amazing and is making my life happy again. Thanks to everyone at the SPCA who helped me. read more
