It has taken awhile, and it's with a very heavy heart that we write this review! We lost our beloved dog and companion Bristol on Feb 11th (my wife's birthday). We are from Western NYS and travel to FL for the winter. Shortly after our arrival and with the help of Bluepearl and Dr. Spiker we found out that Bristol had a massive amount of cancer. The best thing we could do for Bristol was to say goodbye and send her over the rainbow bridge to play in the fields with our or son Nathan, whom we lost 2 1/2 years ago. Dr Spiker was an invaluable help to us both professionally and personally. Over each of our previous last two winter trips to FL Bristol had TPLO surgery first on her left rear leg, and last year on her right rear leg (too much of us playing ball)! Dr. Miniter performed each of those surgeries. Her professionalism and human kindness to us is hard to describe. All the personnel (Drs, Assistants, Front Desk, Custodial) that we interfaced with over the last three years are absolutely the greatest you could ever meet. Though she wasn't the attending Dr., Dr Miniter recognized Bristol's name on the chart and she came in and provided us with a great measure of support and comfort. We will forever remember and be grateful for what she did for Bristol and us! Maybe the best way to sum things up is to say again what I posted last year. I told my wife if anything ever happens to me while in FL, take me to BluePearl in Clearwater! Everyone should be aware that BluePearl holds blood drives for animals. Our pet -- and our family -- went through a heartbreaking week there. What began as hope for expert care turned into emotional exhaustion and financial pressure. We were charged nearly $20,000, yet received very little in the way of genuine compassion or transparency. Every step felt like a sales pitch, not a partnership focused on our pet's health. We trusted them during one of the most vulnerable times of our lives, but that trust was misplaced. The emotional toll has been overwhelming, and we don't want anyone else to go through what we did. Buyer beware. Blue Pearl is owned by Mars. Yes, the Mars candy company. I would never take an animal to a vet clinic owned by a candy company or to any major corporation for that matter. Obviously, animals do not eat candy. The point is a company that pushes unhealthy sweets for humans to turn a profit, most likely values profits over animals. My pet had major surgery last year. The cost of all of his many tests, specialist visits, surgery and hospitalization was about the same as what some of the people I know have paid Blue Pearl for just a visit and testing. Please shop around and be your pet's advocate for medical care.There are much better, locally owned emergency and surgery centers in Pinellas county. read more

I took my 2-year-old cat in for an ultrasound and fever, and it was revealed that his kidneys were enlarged and he had excessive abdominal fluid. The subsequent diagnosis suggested an overnight stay for treatment and further examination, which came at a cost of around $5,700. Dr. Ganey's suspicions were of FIP or lymphoma emphasizing the need for lab results before proceeding with treatment, a process that would be delayed due to the Thanksgiving holiday. When I picked him up the following day, his condition had taken a turn for the worse, with labored breathing, restlessness, and cries of pain, which was heart-wrenching to witness. We were sent home without guidance on syringe feeding, pain management medication, or even syringes, leaving him to suffer through the night. It was disheartening to learn that FIP medication was not stocked and would need to be ordered, a delay that would likely seal his fate. With his rapid decline, the difficult decision to euthanize him was made the day after I brought him home, before lab results were in, as waiting would have meant prolonged suffering. The diagnosis later confirmed FIP, and while the outcome might have been the same, knowing the treatment options upfront would have been helpful. This experience has left me heartbroken, and I bitterly regret taking him to BluePearl due to their prohibitive costs and lack of transparency, particularly regarding medication availability. I am devastated over the loss of my sweet baby. I wish I would have taken him to Epic in St. Pete instead. I do not recommend BluePearl. read more

this place is all about playing on people's vulnerabilites and overcharging. My dog died during a surgery they recommended would fix him. When he dies they admitted they had never done this surgery on a small dog. It was a long 3 week process, a large amount of money and heartache. I wouldn't take any animal there. read more

My dog has anemia and had to have a blood transfusion so I was already 3k in the hole. I went to this animal hospital to do a blood check to see how he is progressing. I wasn't told that the consultation would be $235 on top of the blood test. I have never paid that much just for the doctor to tell me the exact same thing my emergency vet told me. A $235 consultation fee is not common and should be made clear to pet parents before hand. I still have to buy my dog medication refills. I was told to come to this vet because it would be more economical than going to an emergency vet but it's actually more expensive. I feel taken advantage off, knowing how attached we are to our animals. $235 for a 10 min consultation is outrageous. read more

I am very torn here. The tech and nurses were very giving, caring, and happy to explain things in a layman's terms. But that is the end of what I can say good. It seems like they are there to make money They pushed every exam, bloodwork, test, etc. if they could think of. It seems like they were more worried about getting as much out of us as they could. Even when they found out what was wrong with our dog, they still wanted to do further tests just in case there's anything else they may have missed . It seems to me they are very money based. My family has had a horrible experience with Blue Pearl but we didnt realize it until our emotions have calmed down from the devastation of losing our beloved pet. I then found out Blue Pearl is owned by the Mars corp (the maker of candy) now it makes sense why their prices are so ridiculous and a lot of their "treatment plans" are very unnecessary. If I could give it a negative review I would. All they do is push unnecessary tests and procedures. Please find a vet clinic owned by an actual vet and not these huge corporations who put profit before your pets life---it is in their business plan. I have been taking my dog to Bluepearl for cancer. I have to say the specialists there, especially Dr Kane and his staff are second to none. I have been very happy w the medical care as well as the care of the staff while handling my baby. HOWEVER, beware of the prices and price hikes. My chemo, rechecks and x-ray prices have raised 3 times this year. This is nothing but patient abuse and greed. I would never take my baby here for emergency for just this reason. They are truly over priced - even the techs and drs urge you to fill meds elsewhere. While it is understandable that speciality services and emergency services are slightly more expensive than regular care - this company gorges their customers. I don't like leaving a business a bad review but I feel his is deserved.If I could leave a negative 5 star review I most certainly would. I captured an injured hawk a couple of weeks ago. The hawks wing was messed up. Owls Nest Sanctuary for Wildlife was going to come to my house to pick up the animal to rehabilitate it, but they weren't able to come for quite sometime. One of the representatives from that company mentioned that I could drop him off at Blue Pearl and they would go pick it up there. I dropped it off at Blue Pearl knowing that he was going to be taken care of and have an opportunity at life. The next day after dropping him off. I received a call from the owner of Owls Nest mentioning that Blue Pearl had put him down cause he couldn't be at 100% even though he would live and someone was coming to get him and take care of him even though he wouldn't be at 100%. There is a law that Blue Pearl follows if a wild animal comes in and can't be healed, helped, rehabilitated back to 100% they put them down. This is extremely uncalled for and sad of Blue Pearl. Especially when there is an animal sanctuary willing to take the animal in rehabilitate him, keep him no matter his condition to give the animal a chance at life. Owls Nest has all the correct licenses, staff and works with Bush Gardens. For a place that is an emergency animal clinic and is supposed to care for animals. There is very disturbing, sad, etc on Blue Pearls part. If you ever have an injured wildlife animal. DO NOT take it to Blue Pearl or any place like it. Before you take any type of wildlife animal to an emergency pet clinic. Call and ask if they put down the animal if it can't be rehabilitated to 100%, cause they will put the animal down. I highly recommend calling Owls Nest Sanctuary for Wildlife and asking them for the best direction on what to do with the animal. They will direct you what's best for the animal. The surgeon did not speak with us until Wednesday after multiple calls. The response times for speaking with the surgeon after a major surgery is unacceptable. Been going to BP for almost 20 years. I must admit it has been in the decline mode (Clearwater location) over the last 2 years. Not the vets but the administrative people at the check in desk. I waited for 40 minutes for my appt which was at 4:00. Got there at 3:20. At 4:00 I went to the check in people and asked how long it will be. I was told from 15 to 30 minutes! This is unacceptable! I went Sunday with my bird to have a follicle looked at and the ER vet said to come back on Monday, with an appointment, because the Avian Vet will be in and the ER Dr would be charging $168 to look at him and he would most likely recommend for me to come back to see the Avian Vet for $220. I get there and she gives me an estimate of $1156.50 to run a bunch of test (cleaning it is still another $200) and says she doesn't know if the feather is still broke off in there or not. To find that out and clean it is another $200. I asked "so I just paid $230 for you to walk in the room and not even try to clean the follicle, she said yes. It's advertised as EMERGENCY AND SPECIALIZED Vet, but if you need a specialist for your WEEKEND needs, you'll wait till a weekday . We had a time- critical wound care need and hoped to see a specialist while the infected wound was visible, in order to determine the urgency and severity, but only had a tele conversation and photos exchanged with the doc. For the IN PERSON consult, could leave him next day, fit him in, OR Could then drive over an hour to Brandon or wait 3 days for an appointment with local specialist. Meantime we will seek a specialist UNASSOCIATED with an emergency vet where costs are outrageous Note: The same wound care we had at the new Clearwater Vet Emergency Group for $250, where we were able to be with the pet the entire time, was over $600 at Blue Pearl where they took him back, we sat in waiting room, freezing cold with annoying fan turning on/off constantly. Blue Pearl is an amazaing facility with a highly trained medical staff who treated me with respect and over the years have prolonged the life of both my dogs and our daughters cat. I do believe the fees charged are excessive and unlike a human hospital they have no legal obligation to treat your pet if you can not afford the cost of there services. I implore everyone who has a pet to get catastrophic pet insurance. This insurance has a yearly deductible of $100 to $1,0000 and once the deductible is met they cover 80-90% of the medical cost depending on whichever you chose when you sign up. My insurance has reimbursed me over $120,000.00 since 2013. read more

This was my first visit to BluePearl in their new offices on Ulmerton Rd. It's located just a little bit west of their prior location. With the pandemic, there are some new protocols at this emergency vet. In case they've changed their protocols, be sure and check their web site before you go. You will need to park in the allotted spots in the front of the office (you can't miss the signs). There are signs that post the phone number you call to be seen and a specific number designating your parking spot. You do NOT need to get out of your car. I was told that the only exception for being allowed inside the clinic was if your pet needs to be put to sleep. I called the number and told the clinician my cat's issues and was told that someone would come get my cat ASAP...and they did! It was only about 5 minutes before a tech got my cat carrier. I was called back in about twenty minutes by the Veterinarian with a diagnosis for my critter. I approved the charges and was told to wait. In another 15 minutes, I was called with how much the final charges would be and I gave them my credit card number. After about another 15 minutes, a tech brought my cat back out and gave me some meds and instructions. I was told that they would email me a receipt with some more instructions and copies of the x-rays and diagnosis of my cats lungs in about 2-3 days. I got the email with my receipt by the time I got home. After a week, I had not heard from them on the vet's notes and x-rays, so I gave them a call. I was told that the doctor would get back with me. Two more weeks later, I called back again and wanted to know why I hadn't heard from them. I was told that they are an emergency clinic and they do NOT follow up with patients. They had been sitting on the x-rays and diagnosis for 2 weeks without calling me. So, beware that it's up to you to follow up with BluePearl. These are crazy times and BluePearl is adjusting to the situation better than most businesses. I've had to take 3 animals to blue pearl over the past 3 years. The first was for a skin allergy on our dog on a Sunday. It was during covid so I couldn't go in to be with him, but the staff was still nice and professional and solved and fixed the problem. The second time was in an emergent situation involving our beloved almost 14 year old cat. The Vet was incredibly attentive and kind. She took the time to explain all of the results and what it meant with her recommendations. Her compassion and empathy really helped me in a difficult time. The third time was just recently with our beloved dog Rocco. We took him to our regular vet who did say he may have cancer, but didn't recognize how acutely ill he was and/or did not do a good job of conveying to us how little time he had left. He continued to deteriorate so we took him to blue pearl that night. They immediately took him back, started giving him critical/stabilizing care. The vet came out to talk to us and informed us with detail and care that he was severely anemic with terminal cancer. She walked us through our options in detail and answered all of our questions compassionately. They gave us all the time and more we needed to make the right decision for him. We put him to sleep and he is now at peace and no longer suffering. We are so grateful for the time we had with him, and to Blue Pearl for helping us through one of our hardest times. read more

We have never had to utilize a pet hospital before (for cancer or anything else) so this was our first experience with one. We were referred to Blue Pearl by our vet and didn't know what to expect, but when we got there they were very friendly and understanding of our issues. We got Elvis (our cat) diagnosed and we were given the estimates for care (pain meds, chemo, radiation, etc.). TBH, we did have a little bit of sticker shock, but after discussing it we decided to go with the chemo & pain meds to see what happens (radiation was too expensive for us right now). Anyway, here we are 4 months later and Elvis' cancer has not grown but has actually shrunk a little bit, though not enough to clear him. We will continue the chemo for the time being just trying to keep it at bay to enjoy what time we have left with him and appreciate everything that Blue Pearl does for him. read more

Pretty good emergency vet hospital but once your pet is discharged you are on your own and they won't help at all. At discharge they said if it was too hard to give my cat her pills to let them know and they'll give her the meds in liquid form. I called a few days later for that and they said no only your primary vet can give it to you in liquid form. So I called the primary vet and they said they don't even have the meds in liquid form. I had paid $1500 for my cat's visit and they couldn't find what was wrong with her. I was understanding about that at first but not anymore because the least they could do at this point is give me the meds in liquid form. read more

The negligence here is beyond compare! We came in because my dog fell. They did another round of X-rays, bloodwork, kept her overnight on fluids, and supposedly had everyone on the team examine my dog. However, not one person examined her physically... a duh, she fell and did not need to be another pin cushion to pay for your hospital!!!! I had to discover what was wrong with my dog by actually feeling around on my dogś shoulder. Now I am off to find a surgeon to fix it. I'll start by saying - I have a working line GSD who is a serious dog with a goofy side. I called ahead on Mother's Day to get him seen for a hotspot that was beyond my capabilities. The staff was super understanding when I explained he is a working dog and not the average pet. They made me feel heard and that is AMAZING. My Hawkeye was very sick when he came to you all. None of you made me any promises; in fact you prepared me for the ultimate departure. You worked with my fears, you listened when I cried, you talked to and discussed the possibilities with my primary doctor and you were honest and forthright from the start. That is hard to come by. We, pet parents, sometimes want you to be miracle workers, we want to know that you are going to save our babies and we want to blame someone when that does not happen. Truth be told, you love our babies too, and sometimes we have a hard time seeing that, but with my Hawkeye, I do felt you cared, both for him and for me. You were honest enough to tell me to come get him, let him finish out his time where he called home, let him feel the sun on his back and take his last breath surrounded by the rest of his fur and feathered family. * REGARDING WILDLIFE DROP OFF FOR RESCUE * I dropped off a baby possum last night that fell off its mother. It was around 10 weeks old. Blue Pearl is listed under the SPCA site for wild life rescue, and that's how I came to them. I called Blue Pearl this morning to see if the possum was picked up, and they said they had three possums picked up by SPCA. I called SPCA to confirm. SPCA said they never picked up possums from Blue Pearl this morning. Calling Blue Pearl again, they said they could have had another rescue pick up the possum, but that they didn't have a list of the other facilities they worked with. This is total garbage and I have very little confidence that this possum was sent to any rescue. I understand they get a lot of wildlife, but to flat out not know where these animals are sent to is unacceptable. The point of a rescue is to rescue, and all I wanted was confirmation that this place could be relied on. They didn't give any reassurance. Really difficult to trust them after this. read more

BEWARE ! I took my goffin cockatoo pepper to bluepearl Clearwater do to a prolapse. The staff was nice but the vet Sarah A. Gronsky, VMD was inexperienced highly rude and totally unprofessional. During the conversation all she did was throw up her hands and shrug her shoulders. I received two quotes one was for restitching the vent. Apparently Gronsky didn't read peppers vet records my vet sent them cause if she did she would have known that the vent was already stitched and couldn't be stitched any closer not to mention the reason I was there. The second quote was for exploratory surgery because she didn't know what was wrong with my birds prolapse. Gronsky seriously thinks I was going to let her do exploratory surgery on a 50 year old goffin ? NOT !! After driving two hours to get there and 230.00 for the consultation it wasn't worth the trip or money spent. I paid my bill and left there disgusted. I'll find a vet that knows what's wrong with pepper and knows how to do the surgery she needs. read more

Our 10 year old boy had been ill for a while, he has a regular vet that he has seen for his entire life. We took him to his vet due to not eating a couple months ago. Our vet, very great, did tests and examined him but could not find anything specific at that time. We ended up at Blue Pearl for a $600 ultrasound of his abdomen which did not show any abnormalities. Our vet then prescribed prednisone. He was better for a couple of months after the course of prednisone. Over the Christmas holiday he had been listless and just laying around a lot then on Wednesday, the 27th he woke panting and shivering all over. We called our regular vet, got results that his labs confirmed he had Lymphoma. They had surgeries scheduled and could not see him till after noon. We couldn't watch him suffer for hours, only 9am at this point. I called Blue Pearl, told them the situation and they said bring him in. Now, we know our boy is dying, we do not want him to suffer longer than necessary. We went in and were told, have a seat and the "nurse" will evaluate him. Let me state here, I am a NURSE! A Registered Nurse for over 30 years and now a Professor of Nursing. The person who came to see us is NOT a nurse. He then said, "ok so we will take him back and do vital signs and examine him". I said, "Absolutely NOT, you will not do any further poking or prodding to this animal! Go tell the vet to come speak with me if they want further details." He left, we sat for 10 minutes in a cold sterile room. My dog was so distressed. By now it is 11am. I got up, told my husband that we would take him to his vet, about a 45 minutes away. I walked out of the room with my poor boy who was still able to walk with me. When we entered the doors, they called him lovingly by name, took us straight into a private room. The vet came soon as possible, between surgeries, gave us a consent to sign, said he was so sorry.
