BluePearl in Clearwater was wonderful. I had a sick, in pain, ultimately terminal pet. They were super helpful on the phone, and very kind and sensitive when there. The vet was honest about my furbaby's horrible situation, explained the diagnosis as many times as I needed, and was very compassionate when we had to put him down. They have a lovely room for people to say goodbye to pets in this situation, which I've never had at other vets. It really helped. Despite the horrible outcome, BluePearl was wonderful. This review is regarding our consult with ophthalmology, Dr Baldwin/Ashley-resident, & her assistant/tech (Anna?) ~10min $384.54 We were referred to this facility and Vet after an ER visit in another town, in which my dog's eyeball was bulging out of the socket, cherry red tissue was also bulging out, and other eye symptoms were bothering her including discomfort. She had had some eye issues we had delt with prior, including acquiring multiple corneal ulcers over the past few years, showing signs of discomfort, rubbing, squinting, and having discharge from the eyes. However, the bulging eye was more alarming and took us to our town's ER. The vet in the ER in our town manually pushed the eye back in, ran tests and completed an exam including slit lamp/ fluorescein stain, tonometry, and tear test. Her intraocular pressure was at the high end of normal on the bulging eye but overall still in normal range, her tear test was increased in the same eye but both eyes passed the test, and the fluorescein stain exam showed an ulcer in the affected eye. We were given antibiotic ointment to start for the ulcer, and scheduled to see Clearwater Ophthalmology, to determine the cause of the swelling causing the eye to bulge out (abscess, growth,etc), recurrent ulcers, and cherry eyes. Unfortunately our experience was poor with this Clearwater ophthalmology consult. The history recalled to us in the lobby by the assistant was incorrect, and we did not appreciate being told by her 'so the ER basically found nothing wrong, why are you here'-or being rushed through the intake process dismissively. I had also taken time to locate my dog's paperwork and printed it out to inform them of her medical history including previous ulcers and the ER visit, but it was also dismissed by the assistant, and not mentioned by the vet at all. My dog's encounter with the vet was extremely brief, making me question whether the tests claimed to have been performed were actually done. The tonometry readings weren't documented at this specialist consult, and we were rushed through her consult quickly, though the vet's demeanor was pleasant. The discharge instructions were also brief and unclear, which we had to follow up on to clarify. I obtained photos of what I was hoping would work based on their verbiage, and emailed them-at which time my product photos were 'approved' then made into a 'discharge sheet'. She said there was no need to check for a growth or abscess. The treatment prescribed did not help. She continues to squint, rub eyes, has white discharge, hairs and other debris sticking to her eyeballs, and the cherry eyes/bulging off and on. She also continues to show signs of discomfort. When I contacted the facility they only apologized for their mistake of not documenting her eye pressures, but said that the clinical notes said they were 'normal'. There is no way for me to compare what they were in the ER a month earlier against this visit now though, unfortunately. I let them know we did not have a good visit experience, felt rushed through, and discharge instructions were unclear. The response (by Anna-possibly the tech) was not an apology, rather the same rude treatment provided by the assistant/tech we encountered at the visit. She said we can go elsewhere, for our dog to 'just take some over the counter drops', and they weren't concerned about her. As a medical provider for more than 20 years and business owner myself, I am quite disappointed in how we as a patient and patient family were treated, and continue to be. While the front desk person was nice, I cannot recommend this facility based on the tech's treatment of us and potentially our pet. The lack of attention to detail with this visit was also alarming, and being dismissive of clients is no way to run a business or care for pets and their families. While this 'team' may not feel my pet's medical condition 'warrants their time' unless we opt for a surgery, the fact is my pet was referred there, has documented issues with her eyes, and continues to be symptomatic. read more

Took our cat in after 3 recent visits to our normal vet and 2k later. Brought all paperwork and MD was unaware we provided and confessed to not looking over. Spent $700 and learned nothing new that we didn't walk in already relaying was the issue based on current paperwork from our vet. Additionally, was told all three times I asked that I could go back and "visit" my cat and never once was taken back/allowed. My little nugget ( PeeWee) had respiratory issues. Between a Monday - earlier Friday she was ok. Then Friday late, she passed out. I rushed her back approximately 8:30. The male doctor (luna/lunar said he could run the test (s) again but couldn't change or increase her medication. I explained what the cardiologist said about increasing the med she was on. The ER doc said he was not a cardiologist, that no cardiologist was on duty till Monday. I asked/begged him to call the cardiologist, he wouldn't. He then said," if I don't do what you ask, you going to get me in trouble." I was num. He repeated the comment as he was leaving the room. After a bit, I saw a doctor who had treated PeeWee the 5 days earlier. I requested peewees care to be hers. I waited too long. My baby, my service dog, my world could not breathe on her own. I lost her at 2:15 am on September 6, 2015. I couldn't stop crying so she wouldn't be aftaid. A ER doctor with no bedside manner, a careless idiot took whatever or whoever pissed him off earlier out on me and PeeWee. He shouldn't be allowed to treat any fur baby nor talk to any fur parent. pee-wee may have been almost 16 years old, but how many Chihuahuas do you know still have all their teeth at that age. She had better insurance than me and most Americans. She died because a veterinarian at Blue Pearl didn't want to make a simple phone call or refer me to a cardiologist. He was just worried about himself and doing more test without the care. No bedside manner. I am very torn here. The tech and nurses were very giving, caring, and happy to explain things in a layman's terms. But that is the end of what I can say good. It seems like they are there to make money They pushed every exam, bloodwork, test, etc. if they could think of. It seems like they were more worried about getting as much out of us as they could. My dog has anemia and had to have a blood transfusion so I was already 3k in the hole. I went to this animal hospital to do a blood check to see how he is progressing. I wasn't told that the consultation would be $235 on top of the blood test. I have never paid that much just for the doctor to tell me the exact same thing my emergency vet told me. A $235 consultation fee is not common and should be made clear to pet parents before hand. I still have to buy my dog medication refills. I was told to come to this vet because it would be more economical than going to an emergency vet but it's actually more expensive. I feel taken advantage off, knowing how attached we are to our animals. $235 for a 10 min consultation is outrageous. read more

It felt like much of the time they were mostly concerned with money and obtaining that money, literally as we are crying and hugging/holding onto our deceased dog. Forked over thousands upon thousands for our animals throughout the years and all resulting in not making it. They were not transparent and I felt I was given false hope. I left for no more than 2 and a half hours because of the optimism and improvement I was getting from the vets only to have her leave us after shift change which happened between those hours. Also, a lot of the "nurses" looking after the animals are interns, so please know about that. Day doctor wanted to let me know an intern is a nurse/tech already but.. I don't believe they are. Neither does the general definition of what an intern is. Why did we get a call saying she made a turn for the better, that she was doing so much better, better vitals.. talking about maybe not discussing discharge yet but that she's getting better. And then in literally less than an hour later get a call saying she's gone? I need answers. I took my 2-year-old cat in for an ultrasound and fever, and it was revealed that his kidneys were enlarged and he had excessive abdominal fluid. The subsequent diagnosis suggested an overnight stay for treatment and further examination, which came at a cost of around $5,700. Dr. Ganey's suspicions were of FIP or lymphoma emphasizing the need for lab results before proceeding with treatment, a process that would be delayed due to the Thanksgiving holiday. When I picked him up the following day, his condition had taken a turn for the worse, with labored breathing, restlessness, and cries of pain, which was heart-wrenching to witness. We were sent home without guidance on syringe feeding, pain management medication, or even syringes, leaving him to suffer through the night. It was disheartening to learn that FIP medication was not stocked and would need to be ordered, a delay that would likely seal his fate. With his rapid decline, the difficult decision to euthanize him was made the day after I brought him home, before lab results were in, as waiting would have meant prolonged suffering. The diagnosis later confirmed FIP, and while the outcome might have been the same, knowing the treatment options upfront would have been helpful. This experience has left me heartbroken, and I bitterly regret taking him to BluePearl due to their prohibitive costs and lack of transparency, particularly regarding medication availability. I am devastated over the loss of my sweet baby. I wish I would have taken him to Epic in St. Pete instead. I do not recommend BluePearl. read more

I have been taking my dog to Bluepearl for cancer. I have to say the specialists there, especially Dr Kane and his staff are second to none. I have been very happy w the medical care as well as the care of the staff while handling my baby. HOWEVER, beware of the prices and price hikes. My chemo, rechecks and x-ray prices have raised 3 times this year. This is nothing but patient abuse and greed. I would never take my baby here for emergency for just this reason. They are truly over priced - even the techs and drs urge you to fill meds elsewhere. While it is understandable that speciality services and emergency services are slightly more expensive than regular care - this company gorges their customers. The hawks wing was messed up. Owls Nest Sanctuary for Wildlife was going to come to my house to pick up the animal to rehabilitate it, but they weren't able to come for quite sometime. One of the representatives from that company mentioned that I could drop him off at Blue Pearl and they would go pick it up there. I dropped it off at Blue Pearl knowing that he was going to be taken care of and have an opportunity at life. The next day after dropping him off. I received a call from the owner of Owls Nest mentioning that Blue Pearl had put him down cause he couldn't be at 100% even though he would live and someone was coming to get him and take care of him even though he wouldn't be at 100%. There is a law that Blue Pearl follows if a wild animal comes in and can't be healed, helped, rehabilitated back to 100% they put them down. This is extremely uncalled for and sad of Blue Pearl. Especially when there is an animal sanctuary willing to take the animal in rehabilitate him, keep him no matter his condition to give the animal a chance at life. Owls Nest has all the correct licenses, staff and works with Bush Gardens. For a place that is an emergency animal clinic and is supposed to care for animals. There is very disturbing, sad, etc on Blue Pearls part. If you ever have an injured wildlife animal. DO NOT take it to Blue Pearl or any place like it. Before you take any type of wildlife animal to an emergency pet clinic. Call and ask if they put down the animal if it can't be rehabilitated to 100%, cause they will put the animal down. I highly recommend calling Owls Nest Sanctuary for Wildlife and asking them for the best direction on what to do with the animal. They will direct you what's best for the animal. The surgeon did not speak with us until Wednesday after multiple calls. The response times for speaking with the surgeon after a major surgery is unacceptable. This was my first visit to BluePearl in their new offices on Ulmerton Rd. It's located just a little bit west of their prior location. With the pandemic, there are some new protocols at this emergency vet. In case they've changed their protocols, be sure and check their web site before you go. You will need to park in the allotted spots in the front of the office (you can't miss the signs). There are signs that post the phone number you call to be seen and a specific number designating your parking spot. You do NOT need to get out of your car. I was told that the only exception for being allowed inside the clinic was if your pet needs to be put to sleep. I called the number and told the clinician my cat's issues and was told that someone would come get my cat ASAP...and they did! It was only about 5 minutes before a tech got my cat carrier. I was called back in about twenty minutes by the Veterinarian with a diagnosis for my critter. I approved the charges and was told to wait. In another 15 minutes, I was called with how much the final charges would be and I gave them my credit card number. After about another 15 minutes, a tech brought my cat back out and gave me some meds and instructions. I was told that they would email me a receipt with some more instructions and copies of the x-rays and diagnosis of my cats lungs in about 2-3 days. I got the email with my receipt by the time I got home. After a week, I had not heard from them on the vet's notes and x-rays, so I gave them a call. I was told that the doctor would get back with me. Two more weeks later, I called back again and wanted to know why I hadn't heard from them. I was told that they are an emergency clinic and they do NOT follow up with patients. They had been sitting on the x-rays and diagnosis for 2 weeks without calling me. So, beware that it's up to you to follow up with BluePearl. These are crazy times and BluePearl is adjusting to the situation better than most businesses. I can definitely recommend their 24/7 emergency services. read more

It's advertised as EMERGENCY AND SPECIALIZED Vet, but if you need a specialist for your WEEKEND needs, you'll wait till a weekday . We had a time- critical wound care need and hoped to see a specialist while the infected wound was visible, in order to determine the urgency and severity, but only had a tele conversation and photos exchanged with the doc. For the IN PERSON consult, could leave him next day, fit him in, OR Could then drive over an hour to Brandon or wait 3 days for an appointment with local specialist. Meantime we will seek a specialist UNASSOCIATED with an emergency vet where costs are outrageous Note: The same wound care we had at the new Clearwater Vet Emergency Group for $250, where we were able to be with the pet the entire time, was over $600 at Blue Pearl where they took him back, we sat in waiting room, freezing cold with annoying fan turning on/off constantly. Moved to lobby and the TV was on/off sound every 3 seconds. Doesn't help anxious pet parents already stressed out! read more

Blue Pearl is an amazaing facility with a highly trained medical staff who treated me with respect and over the years have prolonged the life of both my dogs and our daughters cat. I do believe the fees charged are excessive and unlike a human hospital they have no legal obligation to treat your pet if you can not afford the cost of there services. I implore everyone who has a pet to get catastrophic pet insurance. This insurance has a yearly deductible of $100 to $1,0000 and once the deductible is met they cover 80-90% of the medical cost depending on whichever you chose when you sign up. My insurance has reimbursed me over $120,000.00 since 2013. read more

I've had to take 3 animals to blue pearl over the past 3 years. The first was for a skin allergy on our dog on a Sunday. It was during covid so I couldn't go in to be with him, but the staff was still nice and professional and solved and fixed the problem. The second time was in an emergent situation involving our beloved almost 14 year old cat. The Vet was incredibly attentive and kind. She took the time to explain all of the results and what it meant with her recommendations. Her compassion and empathy really helped me in a difficult time. The third time was just recently with our beloved dog Rocco. We took him to our regular vet who did say he may have cancer, but didn't recognize how acutely ill he was and/or did not do a good job of conveying to us how little time he had left. He continued to deteriorate so we took him to blue pearl that night. They immediately took him back, started giving him critical/stabilizing care. The vet came out to talk to us and informed us with detail and care that he was severely anemic with terminal cancer. She walked us through our options in detail and answered all of our questions compassionately. They gave us all the time and more we needed to make the right decision for him. We put him to sleep and he is now at peace and no longer suffering. We are so grateful for the time we had with him, and to Blue Pearl for helping us through one of our hardest times. read more

I get there and she gives me an estimate of $1156.50 to run a bunch of test (cleaning it is still another $200) and says she doesn't know if the feather is still broke off in there or not. To find that out and clean it is another $200. I asked "so I just paid $230 for you to walk in the room and not even try to clean the follicle, she said yes. We have never had to utilize a pet hospital before (for cancer or anything else) so this was our first experience with one. We were referred to Blue Pearl by our vet and didn't know what to expect, but when we got there they were very friendly and understanding of our issues. We got Elvis (our cat) diagnosed and we were given the estimates for care (pain meds, chemo, radiation, etc.). TBH, we did have a little bit of sticker shock, but after discussing it we decided to go with the chemo & pain meds to see what happens (radiation was too expensive for us right now). Anyway, here we are 4 months later and Elvis' cancer has not grown but has actually shrunk a little bit, though not enough to clear him. We will continue the chemo for the time being just trying to keep it at bay to enjoy what time we have left with him and appreciate everything that Blue Pearl does for him. read more

Pretty good emergency vet hospital but once your pet is discharged you are on your own and they won't help at all. At discharge they said if it was too hard to give my cat her pills to let them know and they'll give her the meds in liquid form. I called a few days later for that and they said no only your primary vet can give it to you in liquid form. So I called the primary vet and they said they don't even have the meds in liquid form. I had paid $1500 for my cat's visit and they couldn't find what was wrong with her. I was understanding about that at first but not anymore because the least they could do at this point is give me the meds in liquid form. read more

No, I don't think I will and I told the nurse (who had zero problem finding my slot) who informed me that this repetition is 'expected in a hospital' and she needed to get back to her emergencies. hmmmmm... now I could have told her i worked in healthcare and I could have told her she didn't appear to me to be in any kind of hurry but I didn't. my dog is dead and I gotta get her home and in the freezer so I get her cremated. * REGARDING WILDLIFE DROP OFF FOR RESCUE * I dropped off a baby possum last night that fell off its mother. It was around 10 weeks old. Blue Pearl is listed under the SPCA site for wild life rescue, and that's how I came to them. I called Blue Pearl this morning to see if the possum was picked up, and they said they had three possums picked up by SPCA. I called SPCA to confirm. SPCA said they never picked up possums from Blue Pearl this morning. Calling Blue Pearl again, they said they could have had another rescue pick up the possum, but that they didn't have a list of the other facilities they worked with. This is total garbage and I have very little confidence that this possum was sent to any rescue. I understand they get a lot of wildlife, but to flat out not know where these animals are sent to is unacceptable. The point of a rescue is to rescue, and all I wanted was confirmation that this place could be relied on. They didn't give any reassurance. Really difficult to trust them after this. read more

Positives: They correctly diagnosed my cat after my vet did not. The ultrasound for my cat was much less expensive than a previous one had been at the vet's. The emergency vet followed up with us in a meaningful way. Found us an appt with a feline oncologist. They saved our cat's quality of life and gave us at least a few more months with him. Minuses are that they are slow. We were there 6 hours. read more
