I would never recommend the Erie County SPCA for pet cremation services. The care and dignity shown to our beloved cat Mittens was non-existent. After my mothers cat Mittens passed away, she brought her to the Erie County SPCA and paid for a private cremation. She was told she would receive a postcard when Mittens' remains were ready to be picked up. Everyday my mother checked for the postcard hoping she could finally bring her baby home. After more than a month with no postcard, she called multiple times and left voicemails and sent an email asking for an update. None of her messages were returned. Eventually, after being unable to get a response, she went to the SPCA in person. That is when she was told they had "lost" Mittens. Staff told her this had never happened before and that Mittens was likely "disposed of." When my mother asked what that meant, no one would give her a clear answer. She still has no idea what happened to her beloved Mittens, whether she was disposed of in the garbage, cremated with other animals, or something else entirely. She has been left with no answers, no closure and just told her that she would receive a check refund in the mail. What makes this even more painful is that our messages went unanswered for weeks. We can't help but wonder when anyone was planning to tell us what had happened. We only learned the truth because my mother went there herself. Losing a pet is heartbreaking enough. To then lose the opportunity to bring her home because of this level of carelessness has caused our family immeasurable pain. Mittens was deeply loved, and she deserved to be treated with dignity and respect. And she deserves to be home with her family. We would not want any other family to experience what ours has gone through. read more

Just called the SPCA regarding an injured animal and the recording says they are not responding to any calls regarding injured animals - not responding to any animal cruelty calls etc.etc. for a few weeks due to they are short staffed. How can a company that gets millions upon millions of donation every year be short staffed? The animal cruelty extensions threatens the caller with that recording stating they will not respond to any calls without an exact address and will prosecute anyone who makes a false report (like who would know what constitutes a false report when they see an animal being abused)? I adopted sweet jax yesterday and let me just say not only is this place super clean but the staff is absolutely amazing. Everyone was sweet and very very easy to talk to when it comes to having any questions. They helped me take this sweet baby home and he is now thriving! Very clean, all the animals are very well cared for!! I love coming here and seeing the barn animals and the dog and cats, I always see staff walking the dogs. Yesterday they had vet for a day there with students checking in on the barn animals and they had therapy dogs there and one of the older students was nice enough to give me a tour and brought of one of the chickens for me to see since with my wheelchair it was hard to see over the door and let me pet the chicken which was cool he was such a great tour guide and told me all about the bar animals!! I went to the SPCA last Monday to see what cats they had. There was a fair selection of cats to adopt, no kittens at the time. I didn't want a kitten, and ended up adopting Gunther, whose name I changed as soon as he showed me his personality. Renamed Sylvester on Tuesday evening, he is a sweet and gentle 2-year-old, but often into mischief. Happily, I do not have a Tweety bird. Currently, you do not need an appointment to adopt a cat, except on Saturdays. The shelter this week also has a pony and a water turtle, and other non-canine or feline species. This a very clean and well appointed shelter. Care and concern for their charges is obvious for all the staff and volunteers I met. There is also a gift shop in the Adoption Center. Other buildings include a veterinary clinic, and a wild life rescue unit, as well as a drop-off center. Fee to adopt a cat is $120, and they give you a bag of food, the same food as the animal has been on. Covid safety precautions are enforced --masks and distancing. read more

I'm a long time fan of the SPCA. I've been to tons of them in my life, and often left with a furry creature, although usually for others. This is the large local branch that moved from Esigmer street this year. They have been raising money for this new facility for ages. It was a journey that has ended well. This space is terrific. More modern. More "friendly" for pets and humans alike. I still haven't gotten my own dog, but I'm here occasionally dropping things off. Bags of food if I find them on sale. (You can also have it delivered from Amazon, which I've done too.). They like old towels and light blankets too - put them in the dog beds I think. They take newspapers. This new SPCA space is pretty awesome, I'll have to admit. You can tell a lot of work has gone into making it a clean environment for the animals and their potential adopters. I brought my friend here to pick up the two kittens she had adopted the day before - they kept the two overnight so they could be fixed and updated on all of their shots. I sat with her as the paperwork was filed, and I was pretty impressed by how thorough the one attendant was. She explained every bit of paperwork my friend was given, and it even made me feel like the whole process was easy, and they aren't even my cats! For the felines they'll give you a tough cardboard box to take them home in (if you don't have a carrier of your own), with a towel on the bottom to keep them comfortable - also a pair of temporary collars and tags. With an adoption you'll also get a free vet visit (to participating locations) which I thought was pretty awesome. They do have a small pet store inside of the facility, that also sells pet food, food bowls, collars, etc. (Most stuff you could find at a PetSmart) They give you vouchers to redeem a free bag of pet food as well. But there's one thing that will urge me to stick with foster-based adoption groups: every other person working there that we spoke to had pretty bitter attitudes. Like they didn't want to be there and didn't want us to be bothering them. It turned what should have been a friendly atmosphere into one that made me want to just get the kittens and leave already. (Having to defend my self) Right from the start I was treated like I was bothering them and they told me that they had more important things to do to help ( It would take 5 min to do) Every time I go into the building, I am hounded by volunteers, of which they seem to have 3-4 every sq ft. asking me questions like " why are you here? May have a better knowledge and behavior of the last previous owner of that animal. Instead the dog whisperers that work here compare everyone the same, as handling the animal. To push both away. I went to the location on Harlem Rd. for the first time ,in search for 2 kittens to adopt. Everyone treated us very well. Super nice ,funny & very caring about their animals. I found 2 that I decided needed me,but no more than I needed them. They had just been neutered today though,so I could not take them home yet. I have to go back tomorrow before noon to pick up my 2 new members of my family & I can not wait. The place was clean,bright & like I said,workers at the desk were friendly & funny. The man who was supposed to be getting the id's off of the kittens was too lazy to do his job,so a female worker named Tina C. had to do it & she got the job done ASAP. I loved seeing the employees who truly cared for those babies in there. They're not just animals,they're family. Anyways,they make sure all pets are spayed or neutered,they get their shots & check to see if you've ever abused an animal or turned one in to be "put down" & why ? I really like that. They make sure they don't have someone coming in & taking out a precious baby,only to repeat some horrific thing they've done in the past concerning their pets. I truly respect that. I have only been to the new location once, and that was when my mom's cat got out and I came here for help. So my review (for now) is based on that until I get a chance to visit on a happier note someday. In July of 2017, my mom's favorite cat somehow knocked a screen out of her window and got out of her house. I went to this SPCA just to look, hoping maybe someone had dropped him off here. The employees were absolutely wonderful to me, allowing me to carefully take my time to look through 3 rooms of stray cats. When he wasn't there, they took all of my information down, and gave me information to send a picture of my mom's cat to them in case someone brought him in. They also told me lots of tricks and tips to hopefully bring him back to the property. The most helpful thing the woman said was that he was most likely hiding close, since he was an indoor cat. I let my mom know this information, and after about a day and a half, she found him hiding under her neighbor's shed. I really feel like the SPCA was the most helpful source in finding her lost cat, and I'm sure they've helped hundreds of others in the same way. My dog had a hot spot and someone who never had animals turned me into the SPCA for "abuse". 2 ladies came to see me, saw that he was very well taken care of, had food, toys, treats, and even commented that he was very bonded to me. They acknowledged that it was a hot spot, and I explained my dogs grass allergy to them, and they told me that I had to get him checked by a vet but they knew due to covid that everyone was very backed up. I called the vet and there was no appointments until February so I advised them that I had to make the appointment closer to when it was available. SPCA called today for follow up and the woman who called was very nice and we hung up. She called back to ask the vets name, I gave it to her and she said to hold for a minute. A VERY NASTY OFFICER who was yelling at me, threatening me and talked so fast that I couldn't get her name got on the phone screamed at me the whole time, would not let me say anything, was EXTREAMLY UNPROFESSIONAL and then hung up on me. I called back and the operator transferred me to an Officer Robertson's voice and I am currently waiting for a call back. It amazes me that this type of behavior is allowed by the organization. My boyfriend and I have been thinking about getting a rescue puppy for the past year and last week we finally found our perfect pup! We came to the SPCA because we saw on their website (that is so well done) that there were some lab mix puppies available. Once we got to the SPCA we realized it was their grand opening! It is amazing. There's a barn, green where the dogs can play, and a nice big facility where the animals have room to hangout and wait to be adopted. The adoption process was simple and fun. They simply asked us some questions, gave us some time with our puppy to make sure we bonded, and sent us home with some information on our puppy, Ike, and of course our new fur baby! I am deeply disappointed that I have to write this. I found my beautiful kitten at the SPCA via Petsmart. I brought her home on a Thursday. That day I fed her and she eagerly ate. She made this almost crying sound while she was eating and then a few low groan meows . I was surprised when I heard it and thought I was going to have a vocal kitty. She ate kibble on Friday and just a little a few bites on Saturday morning. I tried to entice her to eat all day I thought it was due to her being spayed and stress in a new home That was the last time she ate anything except a couple treats and had diarrhea soon after. She was beginning to become lethargic and I afraid for her to wait until Monday when my vet would open. I called the SPCA and through a recording was instructed to go to emergency veterinarian and gave a few choices. The closest for me was Northtown. I drove there in a white out to find that the doctor was is surgery. After searching for another emergency there was not another that I could safely drive to. I saw that Brighton/Eggert would be open at 10am I was at the door when they opened. They were wonderful and I am thankful for them I left there paying $496 and planned on going back the following day (Monday) if she was not better. She was mine and I was going to take care of her. I did not have any money left on my credit card to return to Brighton/Eggert, she still haven't ate and drank anything and had diarrhea and starter to vomit. They were kind of rude and questioning about bringing her there..she was sick. They questioned why I didn't call them. I told them I had and received the recording for emergency but was never given an option to speak to or leave a message to anyone I immediately bonded with this little girl and did not want to give her up but I didn't have a choice. If they deemed her healthy in my mind the possibility of her getting sick again was great. I spoke to Chrissy in adoptions and she said they would not reimburse me for the vet bills. I had the kitty for four days and spent $120 for her and $496 for the vet. My point here is I feel the kitty was sick when I got her. They sold be a sick kitty. She was 6 months old and may have been surrendered because she was sick. The notes say she was surrendered because they were not able to have a pet. No one will ever know. Chrissy said she was healthy when she left the SPCA and she didn't know what happened between then and when I picked her up at Petsmart which was I believe a was a day and a half. Sounds like passing the blame. I hope this is an isolated experience. I don't think it is right that I pay over $600 on a kitty having her for four days. It is not right I was questioned why I didn't contact them when in fact I tried and was unable to get out of their message loop to leave a message with anyone. read more

I started volunteering here a few weeks ago and have found the ECSPCA nothing but a clean, caring environment for all the animals, fury or not. I have come to learn there are many protocols involved in the adoption process but keep in mind the animals well being always comes first and dictates these procedures. I have never ventured to an animal shelter before. YOU HAVE TO GO HERE!!! AMAZING - facility, staff, animals. Adopted a one year old German Shepherd. Staff was VERY friendly & helpful. They spend all the time you need getting to know the animal. They even have a staff member assist you in purchasing any items you want in an on-site store. Since I barely knew the dog, a staff member even walked the dog to the car so I didn't have to struggle with him across the parking lot. I CAN'T SAY ENOUGH HOW GREAT THIS PLACE IS. The dog was on several medications and they gave me a color coded chart & color coded bottles (they made it so easy I wish all veterinarians did this). The dog had behavioral issues & I am happy to say he has settled right in and finished all his medications. Although the previous owner had to surrender the dog, there was nothing wrong with the dog once his mind and body were kept busy. He now lives on a 105 acre horse farm and runs up and down the 80 foot long barn chasing every toy Chewy sells. We still call him Bear as a nickname, but his full name is Baron. This handsome man deserved a regal name. Thank you for letting me adopt him and not being concerned about my age (68)!!! read more

Before I say anything, I understand this is a "shelter" with limited funds & the fine print we read when adopting can be confusing...however, I purchased a 1 year old cat from the SPCA 3 days ago. I was told she was dewormed only to find out the dewormer does not cover all worms. I found tapeworm segments coming out of her behind lastnight. What upsets me, is that the girl I just spoke to LIED, saying they use a "broad spectrum" dewormer... Which they do not. It kills all worms but tapeworms. Not only have I had to deworm her, but my other cat as well now, and my dog. She also LIED saying that the segments/proglottids that come out of their behind cannot spread, when yes they can, when broke open, releasing the eggs. I questioned as to why she was so thin the day I bought her & they had no explanation only to know myself that the tapeworm is feeding off the nutrients she eats. They also claim she was possibly hit by a car. 2 minor abrasions sustained, and no fractures. However, they perform surgery to fix the animals without performing prior bloodwork. If this cat was hit, I'm hoping she's not bleeding internally. She appears exhausted and I'm only hoping it's from no nutrients and she's not bleeding internally. Clearly, especially being so thin, which was unnoticed... And I am a nurse...this cat should not have been cleared to come into a home with 2 other animals and 2 small children when carrying tapeworm eggs; and appearing thin at only 5 lbs. It's sad to say but for all the people who have put me down in the past for not "rescuing" I would have been better off finding a free-bee on Craigslist and treating it appropriately. They certainly didn't save me any money at $120 a pop to fix/buy her. Plenty of affordable vets around. And last... There's only a $2 - $3 dollar difference in cost of proper deworming vs. the junk they applied to her. They're lucky I didn't purchase a kitten with worms for the $175 they want!!! And to the SPCA... Lets rescue another pit bull and do bloodwork on it everyday because u felt bad for it because it was in a dumpster, only to have to euthanize it a few weeks later because it was nasty, PER THEIR USUAL. SET YOUR STANDARDS STRAIGHT!!!!!!!!!!! I will NEVER purchase an animal from u again! Praying my new baby is only nutrient deficient from a worm u didn't treat. read more

Horrible experience this week with them!! I am posting the message I sent to them this morning. I'm pretty disgusted with your organization. I was with my nephew who adopted a very sweet AND QUITE OBVIOUSLY SICK cat there on Monday - the cat showed no signs of illness on Monday. The cat was to be seen by a vet within TEN days and an appointment was made - of course the cat got sick in FOUR days and needs to be seen much sooner than her appointment. I call your organization and I'm told by the adoption center "you had two days to bring her in" - I said she wasn't showing signs of illness until Friday and she needs attention I have limited hours I can get her to a vet - "Go to the emergency vet" she said. Finally she connects me with your clinic again no assistance!! I work in the medical field, I know virus symptoms start about four days after being exposed and I'm guessing your organization knows that as well IF you are well read and competent. So I'm also guessing that is EXACTLY why you give ONLY two days to the animals you are adopting out!!! Your game is quite obviously to put the cost of treatment onto the adopter, we both know this is the purpose on your TWO DAY POLICY because as I said viruses will appear at around four days as well as the knowledge you have that respiratory infections fly through cat colonies!! The rudeness of those I spoke to and experienced on the phone was inexcusable!! I can assure you that the SPCA will NEVER receive another dime from me - I have donated MANY MANY times, this is our first and LAST adoption. I have called your organization for other reasons in the past regarding strays and abuse you never followed up then either. I will be hitting Social media as well as YELP and I will encourage and convince friends and family to adopt from other rescue organizations that are literally kinder and more helpful. I truly am saddened that your organization has turned into one of MONEY first not the animals, you are a county agency nothing more - For that ignorant woman to say to me "Just surrender the cat back to us" Makes me wonder what kind of money laundering you have going on there! read more

So my VETERAN husband and I went to adopt another dog from here today (5/24/19) and Krissi the "supervisor" basically told us no. Supposedly it's "policy" (yet NOT written policy whatsoever) that no more than 1 puppy can be in a household. We adopted 1 puppy that was 2 months old at the time & then a month later an 8 month old Pitbull. She denied a US Army Veteran that fought for this country so we could have our freedom, the chance to adopt another fur baby for us to spoil like we do our other two. Her excuse "puppies that are put together grow up to be jerks". Excuse me? What about people that buy a dog that isn't fixed and they mate that dog. Obviously there will be more than 1 puppy when the dog gives birth and they'll all be in the household together. Her refusal was not due to HER policy, once again when I asked where does it say that in the written policy she said it wasn't written it was HER policy, it was due to a personal issue she has. Krissi is a blonde average height woman that is the "adoption supervisor". I've spoken with her prior to this incident via phone and email conversations and she didn't give us any issues then...so what's the issue now? My husband was very upset and so was I. We brought in his DD-214 AND his Erie county veterans card from downtown so it's not like he was lying. If I could give a lower rating besides a 1 due to the way my husband & I were treated today, they'd get a ZERO. read more

We adopted our silver lab rescue from here 2 weeks ago. The shelter members were so kind to us and overjoyed to see us give our new pup a good home. They helped us each step of the way and even hugged us on the way out. Griffin (Cobie) has made huge progress since bringing him home. He was a puppy mill rescue who now goes to daycare to play and is no longer afraid of stairs and is mostly potty trained after just 2 weeks! We are so thankful that he has come into our lives and cannot thank the SPCA enough. His follow up vet appointment was completely covered by the shelter and the vet even sent us home with bags of treats for Griff! read more

I just visited this shelter, after getting my dog from city of buffalo animal shelter I wanted to see the new SPCA. It is such a beautiful facility, clean, volunteers everywhere and everyone was very friendly. However, I can't help but be a little turned off by the fact that I would say 75% of the dog kennels were empty. These beautiful spaces that were made for dogs to stay weren't inhabited by any dog. I went up to a volunteer because I just wanted to know, did they have an influx in adoptions over the weekend? Were there dogs out for surgery? She informed me that was not the case, as there were just not a lot of dogs in the shelter. I find it funny because I was just at CBAS over the weekend and they were literally BURSTING with dogs, some needed to even be kept in a garage because there was not space for them. I couldn't help but find that after some thought, the SPCA chooses to take more "non-pitbull" type dogs and for me that is not fair. They should be pulling dogs from the CBAS and having dogs take advantage of the space that they spent so much money on. Honestly this facility is very beautiful, but if you want a glimpse of a true shelter, and how these dogs live I would look at the city of buffalo animal shelter and give those babies a chance. Went with my granddaughter on 7/5 and knew I would fall in love with a little ball of fur. We came home with a tabby named Peach...the sweetest thing ever!!! After only two days she is pretty much settled in. The facility, staff and volunteers here are amazing...very caring!!! read more

When we were looking for a dog to adopt we went sure what we were looking for as far as size ,breed ect... But we got so lucky when I went back for the 3rd time in 1 day. 6lb shu-poo, light brown eyes and perfect markings on her. Just perfect for us. Now we know alot more about these small breeds we definitely want 1 more for are family most of all our Trixie would love to have a companion. I visited the SPCA with my mother in search of a cat or kitten. I was unaware of the need of a pass to visit with the cats and was rudely approached by a volunteer asking me if I had a pass. Again, unaware that I needed one(I must have missed the nonexistent signage of this policy) I apologized and went to the front desk to get a pass. I'd like to say that the front desk staff were friendlier, but that would be a lie. They were extremely rude and asked me a bunch of questions as to what I needed and if I was planning on adopting. It seemed a bit excessive for a place that's whole goal is to find animals good homes. I will be finding another place to adopt from and will not be recommending the SPCA to any of my animal loving friends. Unless they enjoy being treated like a criminal. read more

Now while the SPCA does good, I felt that this location has a good amount of people that don't act professional at all. I went in for a meet and greet with a dog and brought mine along, I asked them before hand if there was another way I could bring my dog in cause he has high anxiety and it wouldn't be good for him. The adoption consumer said that would be no issue, but come time for the meet and greet the animal behaviorist, you know people who are supposed to know these things about dogs even when I told them about him, made me bring him right in the front even though I told them The consular said they would bring him in elsewhere. Now during the meet and greet they were supposed to take my dog and the other in a different room without me there for it and they even told me they were going to do that, but they never did. Kept him by me the whole time. But the part that really upset me over it all was the fact they told someone else that was interested in the same dog exactly what time this was happening and I over heard this person saying "they told me what time it was happening, so I was outside the room cheering when all I heard was barking. they said I would more then likely be able to adopt her anyways" Normally I would have let them keep the $30 as a donation, but after all this that happened I was upset with what I felt was very unprofessional treatment towards me. I really hope this is an isolated incident and doesn't happen to anyone else. All these animals deserve a good home and I wouldn't have adopted the one I wanted cause how scared my dog made it. read more

IF I COULD GIVE THIS PLACE 0 STARS I WOULD!! the volunteers here are very rude and ignorant to visitors!! was in the cat room looking at the cats and overheard this group of 3 older women were loudly talking about my JEANS, my ripped jeans , one lady in particular she literally said "that girls over there , her jeans are disgusting i can't believe she would buy jeans that are ripped like that for 100 times the price of regular ones " why the hell would it matter what i am wearing. then she just went on and on about my JEANS , why were my damn jeans bothering this lady so much, i was staring at them the entire time they were talking about me and it was a WHILE, after my family came back from looking at the cats in the separate area i told them what was happening as the ladies were continuing to talk about me when we were 10 feet away from them... i finally just walked over to them and told that lady it wasn't right to say such rude things about me she's a volunteer she is supposed to be nice and respectful to the visitors here. her name is Marjorie she is short, older and has white curly hair and REFUSED to give us her last name!! my experience here was awful and i will never come back to this location !!!! read more

I went to the shelter on Harlem. The new shelter is amazing. The second time we went there was because we saw a small dog online that we were interested in. This was on a Saturday but the shelter was closed. It was also closed on Sunday. Monday morning I called and said I was interested in this dog and what time could I come in. They said 11:00 am. When I went to the shelter before 11:00 waited outside till 11:00. I went in sign for adoption gave the id number. They told me the dog was no longer on the computer. When I asked why they just opened. They did not know. I walked to where they kept the dogs and was told by a worker that a supervisor held the dog for someone. her name is Krissi. I did some research and this practice is against spca policy. When this supervisor came out she told me she could do whatever she wanted to.There were other people there that also wanted to see this dog. By this time I was very upset. I got her bosses name and card. I called her when I got home. She returned my call and I explained what happen. She called again and said they would investigate this issue. Dont know what happened . This practice is unfair for the people who are searching for a furbaby. They do have rude employees read more
