This place really exceeded my expectations! We were seated relatively quickly for a Friday night, and got the Grasshopper, the El Presidente, and the Hotel Nacional. We had flown into Chicago on a Wednesday from the west coast and decided to find a place for a cocktail after the trip (and to take advantage of the time change). We wanted something a bit different, and after reading the review of Sparrow we decided to go there. Overall, it was pretty fun. Here is what we noticed: - Be sure to use the address since we actually walked past it without seeing the sign...typical of a speakeasy, I guess. - It was fairly late (after 10pm) and the place was fairly empty...it filled up and turned over a bit while we were there though. - Other reviews about it being loud are accurate...for my wife and I at a small table in the corner it was fine though, but be warned. This is not a quiet place. We suspected that they deliberately kept the music load so people wouldn't hear each others conversations...but who knows for sure. - The drink menu was ok, but mostly focused on spirits from Sugar Cane and other types of spirits. There were only three white wine selections and three red wine selections. My wife got the La Floridita...she said that it was fine, but very icy as the glass was filled to the brink with crushed ice. I opted for wine...the pour size was a bit small for the price, but probably typical for the city. Bottom line: Unique place, fun to try...would probably look for someplace else next time that offers more wines to choose from. read more

They've a fairly large selection of drinks, surprise surprise, and are able to make good scratch cocktails upon request. Bartenders seem quite knowledgeable, even served up a Sidecar without hesitation or asking me what it is. Drinks are about adequately priced compared to other establishments within the city. Lighting is dim, of course I gather this is meant to be a date-night or first date spot. With that said, the music, especially during a busy time on a weekend night, is extremely loud to a point of where it's hard to speak to the other person across the table. And people raise their voices around you to compensate, ultimately making the noise level quite on par with a nightclub. I like the vibe but the noise level very much was a sensory clash. read more

Love this place! Been 4 times now and always get the Hotel Nacional. Fun for that speakeasy feel. The cocktails are pretty much all $13 which is great for the city. Wine is pretty much $15 -- I recommend the prosecco or sparkling rose! The grasshopper is really fun if you like mint and don't want to taste the alcohol. La Floridita is also really really good! Basically it's a great vibe, the wait is usally pretty quick for a table, and the cocktails are delish. Only critique is that the music is pretty loud. read more

Update to add to the owners comments: 1- we didn't even make it inside enough to read the "clear sign asking to wait to be seated" because as my initial review stated we were YELLED at my the host IMMEDIATELY after just OPENING THE DOOR to the bar. If your host gets that overwhelmed by two people OPENING A DOOR she may need a new job. Rude. Just plain rude. Can't even walk in because you immediately "greeted" with someone yelling at you to get back and close the door. Walked straight out. What a hidden gem! Great date spot as it's cozy but has romantic vibes. I'm honestly a bit shocked that this nice place is located where it is - but I'll take it! It has speakeasy vibes and the drinks have an emphasis on rum. I don't think they serve food, but if you're looking for a nice craft cocktail look no further. I went to sparrow for the first time last Sunday and I was there again yesterday for a date! I love the place! It's such a fun vibe, the drinks are great, and the bartenders are really friendly and talented. It's definitely a date spot. And it can feel a little awkward because everything about the vibe is intimate except the actual seating. Like you'll be on a first date and the next first date over from you is less than a foot away. Sparrow- you guys should host speed dating because I feel like the arrangement of where people sit in pairs is perfect for it. It did feel a little vulnerable when you did want the privacy when taking about the first date basics of what do you do for work, where are you from, etc but still worth it. Sparrow is a really cute, upscale feeling bar - a stark contrast to it's neighbor the Hangge-Uppe. It's dimly lit and intimate on the inside. I've always wondered why I see dressed up people near the Hangge-Uppe and this would be why. I love the long bar! There is a bigger open area towards the back with some larger tables. The drinks were well made, strong, and service was good. One thing I didn't care for is they don't advertise their happy hour specials anywhere :(. It wasn't until we got the check that we realized we could've ordered something as our visit fell during their happy hour times. It said one of their drinks was $5 per on a Monday. Once you get the check it's a little late to find that out. Make a separate menu with your specials!!!! Don't make people go hunting for them. read more

I really wanted to love this place. It's sort of hidden because there isn't a large sign with their name on it so you could easily walk past everyday and not notice it. I love the atmosphere/decor. It reminds you of an old fashioned house. It's very cozy and intimate. We were able to easily find seats for a group of 6 on a Saturday evening so that was a plus. Our waitress was very friendly, helpful, and timely with our drinks. Unfortunately no one at our table liked our cocktails. The hotel nacional was wayyyyy too sweet and the la floridita was too bitter/sweet. I generally like sweet drinks but it was hard to even finish. My other friends had their two specials of the day and were disappointed. The atmosphere and the service was great but since I didn't like any of the cocktails I'm not sure if I'd come back. Hopefully next time I have better luck with the drinks. read more

We were lucky to go on a Monday evening, had plenty of seating available. Ordered the Daiquiri which was on special offer but nonetheless the quality was comparable to a full priced drink. It's hard to know where to go when you are traveling from out of town, but I am absolutely delighted that I found this spot. The cocktails are superb. My sister had the grasshopper, a sweet minty drink that she absolutely loved. I went for a classic; a dirty martini, and I think this is the best dirty martini I have ever had? I don't know why I'm asking if that's true, but I wasn't expecting it. Delightful conversation. I met a very charming restauranteur. The atmosphere lends itself to friendly conversation. Brandon, the mixologist, was happy to make recommendations. The space itself is gorgeous and clean and feels bright even though it's not overly lit. I highly recommend. read more

Great spot for late night drinks. During a short visit to Chicago, my wife and I landed here on two different nights and both times were excellent. I loved the atmosphere; nothing pretentious, inviting yet mysterious. Dimly lit with no windows, no TVs (THANK YOU!) and good music. The service was excellent. Every bartender was very attentive, friendly, efficient and they all made excellent drinks. I'd recommend the Monte Carlo. A great spin on an old school classic. Incongruently located in the "high brow" Gold Coast Chicago neighborhood, Sparrow seems more attuned to Logan Square. After reflecting upon this and mentioning to the barkeep how Sparrow reminded me of a bar in Logan Square called Spilt Milk, I was informed they are both owned by the same company. Aha! Sparrow has a long bar enveloping a narrow space. This is a drinking person's establishment, with a great selection of booze. In certain ways it reminds me of a more sophisticated version of Salt Lake City's own Water Witch, my favorite bar where I live now. The rum selection is incredible, and Sparrow has rum socials, allowing people to taste the breath and variety of my favorite spirit. The bartender was pleasant, but had not yet mastered the art of conversing while mixing. That was a disappointment, because I'm a talker, no longer trying to impress my date. That's what marriage does, especially as you get older and spend too much time together. It's important for married couples to allow time apart for friends, but since we know no one in SLC, we hang out too much together. C'est la vie. But I still need undue attention from a bartender. This is a very cute bar that's great for a very small group hangout or date, though I'm leaning towards date spot. *Adding bar to dimly-lit date spots that can hide your facial imperfections.* This is a small bar with some bar seats and small tables that can accommodate up to 3-4 people, or 4-5 people if you give each other no room to breathe. It's a very warm, romantic ambiance, and the candles on the tables help illuminate the room just a tad bit. The door was kept open, which is nice in the summer but not so much in the winter. We all ordered a different drink, and I got the La Floridita #3. It has Panama white rum, Maraschino, lime, and grapefruit. The drink was decent and not too sweet, but I like Hotel Nacional better. We arrived during happy hour between 5pm - 7pm, and the wine was half off at $4.50 (though it wasn't advertised anywhere and said $9 on the board). Cocktails are priced at $12 each but aren't included in the happy hour specials unfortunately. This is not a dancing bar. That would be Hangge-Uppe next door, so dance and shimmy your way over there. This is a lounge with no music, so it's very conducive to conversation. read more

Such a cute place. It's discreetly tucked next to the Hanggeuppe (spelling?). The vibes are speakeasy. The lighting is dim. The menu is well curated. Great date spot. Went on a Thursday night with a coworker. There were SO many couples. Resulted in excellent people watching. There's a little nook in the front where a lot of the first dates were taking place. A long bar leads to the bar which had better seating for groups. Long and narrow layout. The decor included a fake phone booth and a wall of keys, keeping in line with the retro hotel lobby vibes. I had too many grasshoppers, which was a kind of elevated shamrock shake. We had a bunch of other drinks on the menu, all of which were consistently good. The only negative was the lack of food.
