I have been on "English" wine tasting tours where I only understood about half of what the tour guide was saying, which defies the whole purpose of hiring an English-speaking guide. I don't mind listening to timed audio recordings where the English has actually been vetted. The champagne tasting at the end is nice too, as the staff does not rush you to finish. Mercier brands itself as an affordable champagne, so the tour experience is what you would expect from the no-frills brand as well.

From the moment you walk in and see the red and the pop art you know you're in a different kind of place and I was digging it hard. The information about the history was completely and utterly fascinating. It was interesting to see how one person's vision can influence popular culture. Granted, the tour is about champagne but it also isn't. It's more about Mr. Mercier and the history of the brand, so if you want a champagne history tour it may not suit you too well.

First off my tour guide was Jerome, very knowledgable, not only did we talk about the region with him but also the culture of the area. This tour felt like you were with friends and not a commercial tour/guide. We were in a small group of 6 which allowed us to get to know the others in our van and converse especially when it came to our lunchtime. Oh yes, the van- very very clean, so fresh like a rental car and had air conditioning, but the temperature outside was so good we didn't need any air con on. I enjoyed getting to explore the area going to multiple cities around Reims, Epernay, and a couple of others I'm not quite sure how to spell the name. The Champagne Master Class was a lot of fun as well! I won't go into detail with this one so I won't spoil it. Lunch time: I have celiac disease (can't have gluten) and often find trouble with places being able to accommodate my restriction. But there was no problem here, I emailed them in advance, they also double checked the morning of again with other members of the group to for any allergies or restrictions. They let me know it would not be a problem. We had lunch in the side courtyard of a French home which made it very personal in ensuring quality. My lunch was gluten-free, with gluten-free bread and other accompaniments. The table was set in a family style lunch setting. They had a great selection of cheeses on a board with jams, and wonderful authentic French foods which I don't know the name of but my boyfriend got to try a bit of everything and he told me he really liked it. At this house there is also lovely small dog named Harry who will come around and nudge you from under the table in his attempt to get some cheese or table scraps. We had dessert and coffee after lunch and then headed to a family wine house. Again another truly authentic experience. Last but not least there was definitely at least 10 tastings I might have lost track at some point haha, but I really got a true appreciation for Champagne and how it is made. I could go on and on but in short, I highly recommend this tour it would be impressive to whoever you bring along!

The tour guide was fluent in multiple languages and very knowledgeable about the process and history. The tasting at the end of the tour helped me to appreciate the flavors therein. Tips to make your visit a success: 1) Dress for the cellars. While the temperature in the region and the facility by comfortable the cellar will be chilly. The cellar is kept at about 50°F (10°C) and a sweater, jacket or shawl will keep you focused on the tour and not the cold. 2) Prepare to walk. The cellar is roughly 17 mi (27 Km) and you won't walk nearly that much in the wrong kind of shoes it can seem like a trek. So don't forget to look great and sensible for this tour. If you're in France make the trip to this house if you're not in France then find a way to get here, you'll love this place.

The Reims tourist office, on the other hand, had basically nothing to offer regarding champagne tourist information. I have been here on previous visits and this office was loaded with brochures, pamphlets, and maps. Very unfortunate for the businesses in the area who are not being supported by the Reims tourist office.

The staff at front desk were helpful and pleasant and showed us around. Lovely room great shower and comfortable bed it would benefit from having a chair to sit on, other than just stools and the bed. Always good to have tea/coffee making facilities and a small fridge. BUT this hotel is rather more show than substance. After reading previous reviews I agree that the restaurant staff let this hotel down badly. The restaurant and drinks are very over priced for this establishment as it does not meet a 5* rating. (There is one member of the staff who is excellent and sadly I can't recall her name other than she has short dark hair and wears glasses and her English is very good and she has a sense of humour). On arrival we ordered a drink and hoped for some food as it states in the hotel booklet that sharing plates are available all day. This is not so as the the young woman who took our order said there was no chef but she did produce some cheese and bread, which we appreciated. The first night we arrived early for our table by 10 mins (7.30pm booking), and were ushered straight to our table, no offer of a pre drink before seating. Drinks arrived and so did dinner, which was very nice but not exceptional. Unfortunately our three courses arrived very quickly and we had finished eating by 8.35pm. All far too quick. The restaurant was busy but if the organisation of staggering seating times was better and the offering of pre dinner drinks when a menu could be offered and the order taken (as in most good quality restaurants), this would have helped. The second night went better as we insisted on a pre dinner drink and the food came more slowly at a better pace. Unfortunately again there was a disappointment, the 39 euro menu had no change on the 'Chefs recommendation' or the fish which would be normal especially as people stay for more than one night. The staff really need training both for dinner and breakfast. For both dinner and breakfast we were constantly asking for things such as salt and pepper, more drinks etc and for breakfast you had to ask for cooked eggs they were not offered nor was a menu displayed offering these. We asked for honey at breakfast which came in a jar, rather sugared no presentation, but we did get the honey. One last thing on the restaurant. Usually dishes are cleared from the table when you have finished with them before the next course this was not really the case here, minor but it all adds up. I do not expect everywhere to speak English but if it is offered even for only the pleasantries, it needs to be correct, to be asked 'what do you want?' when ordering is actually rather rude although I am sure it was not meant just needs adjusting and training. Would we return probably because the room was lovely and a spectacular location, but for goodness sake get your act together with the restaurant (unless that improves I wouldn't eat there for dinner),and don't offer services that don't exist. One more thing two male guests at lunchtime on Wednesday 20th July who were sitting outside drinking both went into the vineyard to relieve themselves instead of using the hotel toilet. Another guest did shout at them but they thought it funny. Uncouth comes to mind. Not a good advert for this hotel!

We felt honored to be guests here and most definitely plan on coming back when we pass through. The chateau is located not to far from the downtown Reims area for references I would suggest locating the place prior to dark, and to use gps. They have a spa on premise, hot tubs outside, a bar and restaurant as well. The food was artwork with unique flavors and experience.
