Just proves you don't need all the bells & whistles to make some nice champagne! + Loved our hostess. We even found out we would be at the same Eras Tour show (!!!) + Tastings are $30 which is an amazing deal for what you get + Tasting room is very cute + Lovely champagne! Given the experience with some of them I was not expecting anyone to be there to welcome us but I was wrong. We actually had to call to find out if anyone would be able to give us a tour and were told that it would be possible but only at 5:30 or later since one of the owners and general manager (I guess that would be the appropriate title) was not available until that time. This worked just fine for us since we had another appointment that was running until that time anyway. At around 5:30 we have come to the house and met with Mr Jacquinot who gave us a personal tour of this boutique producer of champagne. This champagne house is very young by comparison with some of the other big boys in Epernay of only about 60 years old or 4 generations of Jacquinot family making champagne. He gave us a tour of his operation, which is small and still uses some of the old technologies for maturation and fermentation which makes this fairly unique from some of the others we've seen but it was exciting. We went to the cellar which was one of the deepest in the area 19m below street level 109 steps, it was damp and still had clay floors so water made it slippery but what we saw there was very interesting. Some of the old vintages like 1973, 1953, 1949 still in existence and Jean-Manuel told me that he still sells some of the old vintages for those that order them while supplies last. After that we went to the tasting room and I have to say his philosophy of best grapes makes best champagne pays off.

The tasting room is fairly small but includes a couple of outdoor tables that provide a peak into their barrel house which was an added plus. Our group decided to each do a tasting and share sips in order to try the most number of champagnes. Tasting includes two heavy pours for roughly 30€ per person (slightly more or less based on your selections). We really enjoyed the Paradis, a 2016 vintage, and the brut. One nice touch that this champagne house does is to provide a paper ring around the base of each champagne glass in order to tell which type of champagne is in each glass. This is helpful for larger groups which are sharing a number of glasses. Our group had visited a few champagne houses before this and sometimes had trouble keeping track of our glasses. The woman working in the tasting room was very friendly and definitely offered heavy pours. Overall, a smaller house but still a big experience. Check them out!

We opted for the cellar with the beautiful tower. 12 Euros per person gets you a Wonderful, informative tour of the Champagne cave (cellar) plus a view of mini museum dedicated to history of their champagne AND a tasting at the end of the tour. The tour lasted 50 minutes. Our guide showed us the vats where 100,000 L of champagne were stored, how they turn the bottles to remove the sediment and treasures of champagne bottles that were centuries old. Someone in the group asked as we walked by crates of champagne what year and type of champagne the bottles were. She replied that champagne bottles are marked by a special system that only the specialists knew. I love learning about champagne! And the tasting at the end of tour was wonderful! They gave us a sample of the Champagne de Castellane Brut. Amazing! Fresh, bubbly, flavorful. This was much better than the Moet et Chandon we were drinking in NY. I wish we ordered a couple of bottles to ship home.

I do know that the majority of the time up until recently I've been drinking shitty stuff. There are a couple of true revelatory experiences and a handful of very goods. Pol Roger was brought to my attention literally a few days ago and I've learned it is a favorite of the British Royal Family and the passed Sir Winston Churcill which they have a line specifically for. I guess they might be half decent :) What's really surprising is that they might be one of the better price performance values ever. The good stuff is usually very expensive and everything else that is cheap is usually priced accordingly. For about $40 US, the non vintage Brut Reserve is quite good. You learn something new every day and it's great to discover a new value.
