We did the Cellier Belle Epoque summer tasting after flying from San Francisco to Paris, driving to our hotel in Reims, and then driving again to Epernay. I encouraged my partner to cancel our reservation because the big comfy king-sized bed in our hotel room strongly called to me in the sleep-deprived state that I was in. But we went anyway, and I am so grateful that we did. It was nothing short of magical and the most amazing way to start our trip to France.
The atmosphere is gorgeous -modern, minimalist, lots of white and light colors. The outdoor garden dining area is also stunning and we were moved out there for dessert after doing most of the tasting at the champagne bar. But I'm getting ahead of myself here.
When we arrived we were sat down at the champagne bar with a few other parties also doing the tasting. After an amuse bouche, we started off with the marinated salmon dish and the rose champagne. The fish, which was fresh and light, was a welcome change from typical airplane travel fare. The main course was pollack wrapped in zucchini with a fried squash blossom on top. It came with saffron corn mousse on the side in a shot-glass sized vessel. This dish was my favorite. The crunch from the squash blossom went well with the texture of the fish and the zucchini. And the saffron corn purée was a wonderful surprise-airy and flavorful. The Perrier Jouet Blanc de blancs was served with the main course. Both glasses of champagne were fabulous, but that's certainly no surprise. That's exactly why we booked the tasting there.
We had our dessert in the garden, as the sun was starting to go down. The weather was perfect outside. I cannot think of a better end way to end our meal. The dessert was a peach Fontainebleau-a light cheese mousse, peach jam, and an almond cookie bottom. I couldn't have too much because of my issues with dairy, but what I did have was tasty, light, and not overly sweet, as European desserts tend to be. We had coffee along with our dessert and at the very end they served us a little fruit candy (pate de fruits).
This experience was so lovely. At 80 euro per person, it was an incredible value. read more
