The burden is on the members to find a class to fulfill the membership so you will end up paying for classes that are not available, but the Underground Dance studio's position is that's your problem for not devoting more of your time towards planning dance classes far in advance and following waitlists. You are required to sign up for a recurring membership fee to take the trial. My daughter was not aware. After the trial her credit card was charged about $28 per week for several months without her taking one class. The Underground Dance studio raked in the fees with no classes taken. Remember, the business model is that it's your responsibility to fight your way into a class and the Studio has zero responsibility. It is predatory.

They will praise male students for studying dance styles outside of their course load, but penalize female students for doing the same. Not to mention penalizing a female student for training in commercial dance outside of her school hours, and then years later, offer commercial training as part of your syllabus.

The interiors are beautiful and I took a class in one of the glass rooms overlooking Jarvis. So beautiful! In Jennifer Templeton's class we started slowly and continued from Sept-Dec. Her class was not too intense and very intro for those who had truly just started. After the course completed they turned the class into a level 1. Our current teacher is Dayton Hill. He is young, fun and high energy. I am really enjoying his class as well. These classes are a great foundation if you are just starting ballet. I would definitely recommend them. I cannot speak to the higher level classes but the intro and level 1 are great. If you want something more fast-paced they may not be for you. Also, you have to register for a full term and are allowed 2 makeups. There are not drop in options.

With that, I would have to go with my opinion as a parent. We love it. Lorrie, the owner and teacher, is organized, methodical and fun. She's appropriately strict and the kids learn confidence and discipline (but not like the kind you learn in a Shaolin KungFu temple). The highlight is the annual dance recital that's held in a large theater. I was pleasantly surprised by the high production level, especially since the performers are mostly still wearing diapers. The dance studio is in the Junction and it's quite clean and comfortable. The classroom is large and appropriately padded. The waiting room for the parents has comfy chairs but could use some more current magazines. There's a change room and two washrooms. The bonus is there are a ton of things to do around the studio while your kid is in class. You can shop for organic food at The Sweet Potato, grab the best cup of coffee at Crema or indulge with a yummy Bronto Burger. We love it.

The studio itself has a nice floor but the only qualm I have is that there isn't any air conditioning (or at least it felt that way). In terms of the zouk class, it was about 2 hours long. There was a bit of stretch and warm up and they went over the basic steps and gave us 15-20 minute to practice as well. The instructors were very friendly and I was able to somewhat dance it (albeit poorly but I know the steps - just gotta work on the timing and musicality) after the workshop. The staff were very friendly as well and I plan to come here again.

My four year old daughter was enrolled in their two week full-day summer program this year and after Week One, she was no longer looking forward to returning. A red flag went up for me when I was briefly watching her in class and the teacher never corrected her movement. In fact, the teacher was behaving as though she didn't even see my daughter! This wouldn't have been a big deal if my daughter was in a packed class of experienced dancers, but there were only three children in the class. Furthermore, my daughter had never danced and she was placed in a group of older children (six and seven year olds) who already had a few years of experience. It was during the showcase that I clearly saw the problem : in addition to being placed in a group of older and more experienced dancers, the choreography was simply too complicated for a young child. Instead of repetitive movements that would teach a child body awareness and musicality, the movements were changing every eight counts, making it difficult for a youngster to follow. My daughter felt discouraged and there were moments she simply did not want to dance anymore. We are very disappointed by our MHSB experience.

Despite that, they automatically charged my card multiple times, nearly $2,000 in total, and ignored my emails and phone calls asking for clarification and refund. Only after I went in person did they refund part of it. Later, when my daughter stopped classes due to her heavy school workload, I followed their rules and paid for the first and last month as required, but the school still refused to refund the remaining tuition. I reached out many times but most of my messages were ignored. I've tried to handle this privately, but the school's lack of transparency and repeated unauthorized charges have been extremely disappointing. I share this review to warn other parents to be cautious about payment policies and communication issues with PSB & Interplay Dance.

NOTHING in my life besides my family has had the most significant impact on who I am today. I only look back with fondness, love and extreme gratitude when I think of all my days, weeks , months and years spent training, rehearsing, learning, laughing, all the while dancing to feed my passion for this art. How many dancers can actually say with a full heart that their very first dance instructor when they were 2 1/2 years young was their very last dance teacher that proudly handed them their graduation certificate. I regard myself as the most fortunate of graduates because of the amazing array of character traits that I acquired from all my formative years at Interplay . My awesome and amazing friendships with fellow dancers and teachers are ones that I treasure and adore . These are forever sacred to me. Even as recent as last night I received yet another comment while taking a dance class at a gym and the instructor commented on my strong training . I started bellydance class and I've enjoyed it more and more as I've progressed. My friends tease me for it but I have absolutely no shame during bellydance class. I stand at the front of the room and I put forth all my effort. In fact, I bellydance with such reckless abandon that silver coins detach from my satin coin belt and scatter across the studio floor. Bellydance has made me more confident about being a curvy girl. I have a tendency to be an introverted chubby bunny but when I'm dancing, I am an exotic and voluptuous seductress. I smile coyly at myself in the studio's mirrored wall, transfixed by my own spiralling hips. I feel sexy instead of uncomfortable about having a little extra junk in the trunk. What I like about Arabesque Academy: - The instructors at Arabesque are excellent, knowledgeable and approachable. They all have lots of experience as cabaret performers and as teachers. - Most classes are drop-in which is great if you don't like to be pinned down to a specific date and time every week. - There's a real diversity of dance classes to try, in addition to the different levels. Supplement the standard lessons with classes in tribal, belly hop, folklore, conditioning, props... Also, the standard classes let you explore different styles of traditional Middle Eastern dance and music like saidii, khaleeji and cabaret. - The student gala happens twice a year and it is very professionally put together. It's so much fun to get dressed up and show off your well-rehearsed moves in front of a supportive audience. What I don't love about Arabesque Academy: - The studio isn't in great shape. The change room consists of a kitchenette with a length of fabric pinned over the door. The floors are coated with tape - this is a tough surface for doing certain dance moves, especially when the tape gets gunked up with strands of hair and stray coins. - The per-lesson price feels far too high when 18 people show up to take a particular class. I wish Arabesque would put an attendance cap on their classes, dependent on which room is being used. It's just not possible to get much from a lesson when it's too cramped to do 'snake arms'.

I started taking classes there years ago after I tried the free class offer and haven't looked back! I am now also addicted to performing at their student galas. We get to earn really cool choreographies and then perform in a theatre. How cool is that? I tried classes at a couple of other Bellydance schools and they just don't have the fun-going vibe or consistent class structure that Arabesque has. The Arabesque teachers are all great dancers, kind and supportive. I really feel that they are giving me all of the tools I need to become the best dancer I can be, but in a real fun environment! The school is non-competitive and there are so many awesome different types of women of all ages, sizes and backgrounds there who are looking to have fun and learn more about Middle Eastern dance. The other students are like Any woman looking to try something fun and exciting, I would strongly recommend taking classes at Arabesque!
