Dear Jamie and Priyanthi from Membership, We've been loyal gym members for years, rejoining even after COVID. They've been increasing fees and such, but we wanted to support our local center. Over the last week, our credit card on file expired and we wanted to take a pause in our membership anyway due to upcoming travel. We called five times, left three voicemails and finally we received an email back one week later from Jamie to come in and resolve things. When we came, They said the membership director Jamie just went for a walk and we heard after 10 minutes that perhaps he wouldn't be back (uncertain since they didn't have his cellphone). Although the membership director presented some options via email, the junior staff refused to entertain them and said we could come back four days later after the long weekend to address it, even though we told them we were traveling for a few weeks afterward. Worst of all, Priyanthi, the staff member, refused to allow us to enter the gym! Physically refused us! Not only did they bill us for the month and threaten us with collections, they refused us to enter the gym until the membership director came back to follow through on his own offer via email! This is unacceptable and why everyone is abandoning this center in droves, leading to fee increases. Wow. read more

I am personally grateful for the professional and polite staff (security and fitness both). I am always welcomed every time I arrive, and wished a friendly goodbye when I leave. This is a horrible facility. Staff are very rude and customer service is sorely lacking. Furthermore, the addition of three security guards who are aggressive and rummage through people's bags every time that we enter the place is awful. If the security is there to keep people safe, why are they aggressive and pushy? It feels like an unsafe environment. I did not enjoy time spent there as the community feel is gone, the staff are not polite or engaged in their jobs and the facility is not kept up well (change rooms not very clean, bathrooms were filthy and disgusting). I am surprised by how this place has changed, sadly. read more

We love the JCC! We come for swimming classes, and every now and then, a community event. The place has a great atmosphere; very welcoming and down to earth. The facilities are excellent, clean, and well-maintained by helpful and friendly staff. I would love to rate MNJCC on a high scale, but their membership policies seem to fly against the rationale of customer retention. I recently moved back to Toronto after living abroad. After inquiring about re-starting my membership, I was told that there is a $59 enrollment fee! This is above the $79/month adult rate. I think this is absurd. I've been gone for only 1.5 years, surely they kept my records for auditing purposes. The administrative costs for them would be minor. As a returning customer, why would I tax myself an additional $59 to give them my business? Unless you plan to keep a perpetual membership at MNJCC, you may want to ask them about their cancellation and account re-opening policies before you sign up! read more

It's not the biggest or flashiest health club in the city, BUT....unlike most health clubs in Toronto....they don't play any B.S. health club games. This is a review for the 'Being Jewish' class I am taking with my fiance. We decided to take the class, for both his and my benefit, to get to know the background and history of the culture. He's not orthodox by any means, and a lot of the traditions are performed just as any family would do certain things. Me, I am atheist - but I want to understand the meaning behind it all because it is important to him. The things we do for our life partners. What I like about the course is that he focuses on the culture not the religion. This isn't a conversion class, but more a class for general understanding. It's like learning about the history behind traditions done on Chinese New Year, for example. Just in the same way, this class you learn about why things are done on the high holidays and why some decide to keep kosher (and others do not). The teacher is energetic and seems to like to talk. We have discussions, but it throws him off track. Although it's nice to see that people have to same questions as me. The class is mostly engaged inter cultural/faith couples, and some older folks just wanting to learn for their own knowledge. I'm sure that most of this is available on the internet these days, but lots of questions has lots of interpretations. The teacher is very open minded about all aspects of Jewish life, and encourages you to come to your own conclusions, which is nice for an atheist like me. Its also nice to talk with other couples that have the same challenges as us, and also great for meeting other folks also planning a similar wedding. I like the discussion and getting other people's perspective. I would recommend couples to take this instead of the conversion class that we came across. There's no need to really go through a university equivalent course unless you truly are going to convert. This 8 week course will get you a great overview of Jewish life and culture, and help make synagogue a little more interesting. . read more

Buoy oh buoy I like salt water swimming, and as far as I know this is the only pool in Toronto that provides the saline experience. In a time when I may have slightly skewed my salty dog: salty swim ratio, the steam room here was also a crucial part of my workout, as were the long lingering afternoons around the change room pretending to be "one of the gals."* The secret to fitting in is to get nude and stay nude. And clean your toes really well. My only qualm about this gym was that the walkway crosses in front of all the aerobic machines, so you're prone to the occasional leer. By and large, though, lovely staff and patrons. Plus a nice vibe of all-around community center. *old Polish women. read more

The downtown outpost of the JCC, the Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre once found itself near the heart of Toronto's thriving Jewish community. Today, that community has largely moved north, which would place the MNJCC closer to the kidneys, but with a slow trickle of young professionals and families back into the city, the MNJCC constanly renews itself. Good thing, too, following extensive renovations a few years ago. Unfortunately for a 'community' gym, prices have escalated in the last few years. Maybe this is how UJA plans to raise funds for the sarlac pit that was once the Bathurts JCC up by Sheppard? In any case, it's become much less affordable. read more

We had an awful experience with swim class recently. Totally incompetent teacher who just stood there looking scared and barely said a word. Really hard time reaching the aquatics supervisor, who refused a refund or even to switch to a better class. Don't waste your money. read more

I came here to play volleyball over the weekend. As an adult, it's hard to find courts to play on, so usually the Toronto Social Sport Club and Mississauga Social Sport club end up getting permits for elementary and junior high schools. Unfortunately, playing sports as adults in these small gyms can make for some weird games. When I walked onto the court, I was quite surprised to see it was full sized and enough for 2 adult volleyball games. What was also quite nice was the gym. It looked clean, had plenty of cardio machines and even an indoor track. They are also in a building with a Second Cup and in addition, there's a little art gallery/seating area which is quite comfy. Seems like a great place to get your exercise in or just chill for a coffee. read more

My whole family has been going to the Bloor JCC since we moved to Toronto many years ago. I now live in the area and spend a ton of time at the gym. It pretty much has it all: - nice facilities - a new basketball court - every type of weight and machine you could need - a salt water pool - a great saltwater hot tub and wet and dry saunas While not everyone lives in the neighbourhood, the JCC is perfectly located at Bloor and Spadina right on two subway lines. Most importantly the people who run the place and people I meet by chance are all great. The staff get to know people by name and are super friendly and I have made some good friends just randomly meeting people while working out. read more

I swim here once a week, nice pool, especially on a sunny afternoon - too bad it is not olympic size. Add on dry sauna, steam, whirlpool - with 2 towels and taxes $ 20.00 total. . Bring your lock, and dress light when you enter, , lockers are small . Very clean place, friendly staff everywhere. I gave 4 starts - room temp. is kinda low for me. read more

This is based on the prenatal aquafit class only. The class is amazing and I highly recommend it, but this is only a 4 star review because I can't speak to any of the other classes or facilities at the JCC. I love that the pool is salt water instead of chlorine. When I was pregnant I really wasn't comfortable with swimming regularly in a chlorinated pool. The class is tough but it feels so good to be weightless and buoyant when you are pregnant. The locker area is clean, nothing fancy. Bring your own lock. read more

The Al Green Theatre is a lovely space. It's not very large, in terms of seating but can fit in a decent amount of viewers for any show. Seats have a nice cushions to them. Watched Swordplay last night at the Toronto Fringe Festival. Loved the show, and was really glad to have gotten the chance to see it at this particular theatre as I have never been inside the community centre before. I've been a member here off and on for the last 11 years. I belong here for two reasons: 1. Convenience. 2. Their spin classes. The majority of instructors are very good and I really like their new-ish spin bikes. It's certainly not cheap and for a bit more you could join a much nicer gym in this city, but aside from the two points above, they always had excellent customer service and that played a large part in what kept me coming back. However, they seem unable to repair a lot of the machines in a timely manner or even their spin bikes - many of the seats and handle bars don't lock in so you end up bouncing all over the place and a number of consoles don't work. And this has been going on for months. I pay nearly $100/month for a basic membership - can they not afford to fix equipment when members are paying that much?! My biggest issue though is this - Over the last couple of years, their customer service has taken a nose dive. I've been screamed at by their fitness desk staff for asking for a token for the "spin" class instead of the "cycle" class (pardon me!), accused of trying to "sneak in" when my entrance card was not reactivated after I had come back from having my membership on hold (their fault, not mine!), charged for a membership hold and my regular fee in the same month which then apparently couldn't be refunded and instead could only be used as a credit (so I basically gave them a loan for a month!). And don't even dare comment on a poor performing instructor or complain when a class is repeatedly cancelled at the last minute because the instructor doesn't show up since they will simply respond in a defensive tone. I get it - everyone is stressed and tired and just doing their job but people also expect quality service. Treating customers as though you're doing them a favour for even providing the services they pay for is disrespectful and rude. Sure, sometimes things come up and it's out of the business' hands, but not when it happens repeatedly. Their staff need lessons in customer service and they need to realize that their customers are in fact paying for services so repeatedly cancelling them is not ok. If this place was not a 5 minute walk from where I live, I'd go somewhere else in a heartbeat. Also, they charge a 3% fee on every transaction. Their initial rational for implementing this a number of years ago was that they needed extra money for their crumbling building but would then get rid of the fee after everything was fixed. Years later we are all still paying the fee and nothing has been fixed.... read more

Left the gym to get a drink during pick up basketball, cellphone and wallet stolen. Was gone for 1 minute. I play pickup basketball all over the city and never had any problem, one visit to JCC cost me ~1000 bucks. Watch your stuff around this place. read more

Did you know the JCC has a movie theatre? I had no idea. The movies they play are fantastic. Excellent value also. The JCC offers so much to the entire community. I would highly recommend you check it out. There really is something for everyone read more

This can be a very busy place, with a small amount of machines. At prime time, there is very little fresh air. There is a thick coating of dust on the backs of the TVs and some of the machines. The worst thing about this place is that a lot of the clients don't know proper gym etiquette. So often I see, usually males, sitting on machines for up half an hour while playing with their phones. There's a few obvious non bathers as well. People will stand behind you while you use a machine waiting for you to finish instead of either using something else or asking to work in. Worse, I had a huge drawn out incident with a jacked up male, who demanded I get off the leg extension, and who shouted "I'll pull you off that machine if you don't get off it". This pr--k also stood in front of the machine and jammed it with his legs with his crotch in my face so I couldn't use the machine. It was bad. He repeated this threat of physical violence again in front of an employee and the employee just stood there and did nothing, he was unable to behave in any way to diffuse the situation. Instead he gave some patronizing comments, all he was concerned about was swearing. The lack of response from the employees who have no capabilities or protocol to deal with overly aggressive males is very dangerous in any gym. If I had my phone with me, I would have called the police. Also odd is that no other gym members looked up from their workout to get involved or report what they had witnessed. There's better and safer places to work out in peace without dealing with out of control jacked up nutbars and useless employees. Even more obscene is that this pr--k was not banned from the gym and when I asked for a reimbursement from management, I was only given half the month back. The entire incident was obscene and I have never dealt with anything like this. It takes the "community" right out of community centre. read more

I love the JCC. It is the best place to chill out before or after work. Swimming in the salt water pool is sublime and rejuvenating, as is the hot-tub. Very friendly staff. There are often interesting art/or photographic exhibitions just off the lobby. You can top off the experience with a cappucino from the Second Cup. read more

Pros: 1-Super-convenient location. Right Spadina and Bloor and every easy to get to. 2-Reasonable membership fees (compared to what I have heard elsewhere). 3-Not that busy (especially when compared to the YMCA). 4-Toileteries are always available. Cons: 1-The place is always closed for one million different holidays and/or events (some of them are not even listed in advance) which is very annoying. You're there, all up and ready, you had your coffee, eager to start your 30 min cardio and....door is closed (sometime with a municipal cop at the entrance which I find pretty intimidating) "Place is closed because of private event. Go back home". 2-I have read other reviews saying that the place is clean and I have to partially disagree. Yes, the yoga/pilates rooms are generally clean but all the rest of the gym is dirty (with a special mention for the changing room with the ugliest carpets/lockers you have ever seen). 3-Everyone seems to be leaving weights on the machines or on the ground after using them which is very annoying. I exercise for 45 min and spend another 15 min looking for weights (sometimes taken to other rooms by clients) or racking them in their location. There are also very few weights which means that patrons are always waiting for others to finish using them. Overall: Good place if you into yoga (or some sort of classes that you have to pay for) and are super organized and flexible and don't mind how often the place is closed. Bad if you want to hit the machines or need to have strict exercise routine. Also bad if you are obsessed about clean or organized places. read more

What a lot of people may not be aware of is their amazing fitness facility that is open to everyone of all races and religious backgrounds. Highlights include: - Saltwater pool - Clean and large fitness area - Fun and unique fitness classes that run throughout the day, including yoga and yogalatties. - Theatre used for plays and concerts - Tons of programs and classes ie. pottery, krav maga, robotics for kids - Large gymnasium that has cheap drop-in basketball - Programs for active seniors looking to keep busy - Affordable rec swim for the whole family Daily drop-in fees for the fitness centre and pool are $15.00 for adults but you can always check with someone in membership to see if they have any monthly or annual deals. Honestly, come see it for yourself. You won't be disappointed with the MNJCC and it's close proximity to the Spadina subway stop. read more

Would not recommend as they tend to throw the books at you if you have issues. I had a membership with my fiancee. She wanted to get out of it and run outsides as opposed to a dungeon so i cancelled her side. Because i was 2 days late they charged me an extra month. This is on top of the 1 month that they charge you anyways. I tried to contact various people but they are all very polite yet complete Administrators. I ended up cancelling both our memberships in sheer annoyance. If you need to get a hold of anyone you better make sure that you have given yourself ample time as they don't respond to phone calls or emails. It's extremely unprofessional. And yes, they will milk you for every dime. read more

Nice cardio section but terrible free weight selection. If your interested in building mass there is literally only 1 bench press and 1 squat rack in the entire gym. Yes they have other niceties like a whirlpool that always has hair in it or a sauna but over all not a great value. Oh yeah and they vigorously enforce their contract. No excuse for early cancellation is accepted and if you refuse to pay the fee they make sure to destroy your credit rating. read more

I love this place. I joined just a week before Christmas and was pleasantly surprised by the staff. No one tried to push anything on me, or force me into anything I didn't want, and they offered me cake during my tour! I declined (it could have been a test, you guys!) but it was nice. I've noticed that they often have coffee in the reception area too, courtesy of the second cup upstairs, which is a nice touch. The locker rooms are pretty nice, nothing special, but clean, modern and tidy. They have the usual cardio machines (some that I had never seen before and approached with caution, some that I was familiar with and stayed well away from). I have to say, though, the best thing about this place is the weights/strength training options. They have a huge area opposite the cardio machines with more weights machines I imagined were possible, as well as an area for stretching, playing with those giant bouncy balls, and doing free weights. However, there's also a studio down the hall (for yoga/pilates classes) that has mats, free weights, ball weights and all the rest that you are allowed to use if there's no class going on (and there often isn't). It's really nice if you want your privacy. Alternatively, if there *is* a class going on and the weights machine area is a little crowded, there's an additional weights room somewhere among the studios that has machines, free weights, etc., and is generally less crowded. LOTS of options, it rocks. Probably my favourite thing about this place was the free 'fit test' I got when I joined. I met up with a personal trainer early in the morning (it's by appointment, so you can pick a time that suits you) and she did a few tests with me, as well as measuring my body fat and all that jazz. She assessed my fitness and told me what I need to work on (apparently my body fat is a little on the low side and I have the grip strength of a old lady with sun stroke -- who knew!). What's more, she advised me on the classes they offer that I should take (majority are free for members) and gave me a voucher for one of their paid classes which she thought I would really benefit from. She didn't give me the hard sell on anything, and she even gave me an additional appointment for one month later so she could check up on how I was doing. Ace! Oh, and one more thing: If you need help working anything at all, they have people wandering about in red shirts that can help you out/give advice if you want to use a certain machine or need to know what to do to work on certain areas. Look how nice this review is ... you'd swear I'd actually been to the gym this year with all these nice things I have to say. Oh well, maybe tomorrow. read more

Just moved to the area a few months ago and joined after years of belonging to another, larger chain gym. I joined mostly out of convenience, but was highly impressed by their class schedule - times are varied with a variety of classes that fit my schedule, so that's a bonus! I also like that the gym itself is not huge, but seems to be spaced out quite well, with plenty of cardio machines, weights and a number of rooms to use. Staff are friendly and the facility seems clean. I only gave 4 stars due to the price - it's certainly not cheap but I guess one pays for convenience! read more

Our family is fortunate to live close to the JCC. My daughter has attended many programs here including Shabbat Party, swim lessons, jungle gym and the Do Re...Me! music class. This music class has been a favourite for both my daughter and I. The instructor goes beyond the typical children's music class programming (something that usually involves the kids sitting down while someone plays nursery songs on a guitar)- the children in this class are kept busy with a variety of engaging activities and are given the opportunity to play, dance, and learn while being exposed to different composers and musical instruments. We both have a ton of fun here and look forward to attending each week. read more

My son has been going to the Do Re Me music and movement class with Tova Rosenberg at the JCC for over a year and he absolutely loves this class! We had tried a couple of music classes at other nearby locations previously, but this one is by far the most engaging and best value for money. Tova is fantastic with the children - she creates a very friendly and nurturing atmosphere and manages to keep things moving fast enough to hold the children's attention without being so frantic that they go crazy or can't keep up. My son especially loves all the hands on experience he has had with a wide variety of instruments - violin, cello, drums, triangle, tambourine, bells and a whole host of other percussion instruments. Because this class focuses on music and movement it means there's lots of energy expended too. Highlights for my son this term have included the parachute, tunnel, bubbles and hoops. read more
