I have been coming here since I moved to WA 5 years ago I moved out of the area 3 years ago, and I still go here with my 7 pets and drive an hour each way. We have 5 seniors with a variety of healthy issues and we are frequent flyers at the vets to say the least . Dr. Mechur is one of the very best vets I've ever had the pleasure to work with. She is patient and kind and very knowledgeable. She stays after hours and takes the time to know all the ins and outs and lumps and bumps of my family Michaela is the best Vet tech ever. She has the magic touch l. She is able to do blood draws on my cats that previously they would have to be sedated . Faith, Britney , Cat are all top notch at what they do. The front office staff deals with me and all my crazy pet needs on a weekly basis. These people work extremely hard in an industry that is underpaid and under appreciated. 0 out of 5 Stars - Extremely Disappointed I would not recommend Spanaway Veterinary Clinic to anyone. Our puppy received her first vaccine through the breeder's veterinarian. After we purchased her, we brought her to this clinic for a full wellness exam. During that visit, we were told she would need her next vaccine in one week. We scheduled that appointment, but the veterinarian insisted on performing another "follow-up" full exam before administering the vaccine. That would have meant three full exam visits (each around $100) within one month. When we explained that we could not afford to pay for repeated full exams just to receive scheduled vaccines, they eventually waived the additional exam and administered the vaccine. Now our puppy is due for her next set of vaccines in three weeks. On 2/24/2026 at 3:40 PM, when I called to schedule the appointment, I spoke with one of the rudest receptionists I have ever encountered. She informed me that we would again be required to pay for another full "follow-up" exam in order to receive vaccines. When I explained that we only needed the scheduled vaccines and referenced the previous situation, she stated they would not waive the exam this time. I politely asked to speak directly with the veterinarian to better understand the policy. The receptionist refused and instead stated she was going to deactivate our account. The fact that a receptionist feels empowered to cancel a client's account for simply asking questions is extremely concerning. Refusing to allow communication with the veterinarian is unprofessional and unacceptable. We have decided to move our puppy's care to Canyon Road Veterinary Hospital, who is willing to review her records and administer scheduled vaccines without forcing unnecessary repeated full exams. The owner of this clinic should seriously evaluate their front desk professionalism and client communication policies. We will also be filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and sharing our experience with other pet owners and breeders so they can make informed decisions. Very disappointed. This is in response to their response: Thank you for your response. However, much of what was stated does not accurately reflect what occurred. First, the individual I spoke with did not identify herself as the hospital manager during the call. Regardless of title, the tone of the conversation was dismissive and unprofessional. Clients should be able to ask reasonable questions about policies and costs without having their account deactivated. It is also inaccurate to state that three different staff members clearly and consistently explained a firm policy requiring two exams. What we were originally told was that our puppy needed her next scheduled vaccine in one week. When we returned, we were then told another full exam was required. Only after we explained our financial concerns was that exam waived. That does not reflect a clearly communicated or consistently enforced policy. We did not refuse medical care for our puppy. We questioned the necessity of repeated full exams within a short time frame after she had already received a breeder exam and a full wellness exam at your clinic. Wanting transparency about medical recommendations and associated costs is not refusing care, it is responsible pet ownership. At no point did we say we intended to administer vaccines ourselves. We stated that if repeated full exams were required every time, we would need to consider transferring care to another clinic. That is a reasonable and honest statement, not grounds for account deactivation. What is most disappointing is that at no point did anyone attempt to work with us to find a reasonable solution. There was no effort to discuss alternatives, payment options, or a clearer explanation of the medical necessity specific to our puppy. Instead of collaborating with us as concerned pet owners, the approach taken was defensive and dismissive. A business that consistently responds to customer concerns by implying the client is wrong rather than listening and problem-solving will eventually struggle. Long-term success comes from professionalism, transparency, and partnership with clients, not from shutting down conversations. The decision to inactivate our account rather than allow a direct conversation with the veterinarian only reinforced our concerns about communication and client care. We stand by our experience. Pet owners deserve respectful communication, clear policies, and a willingness to work together in the best interest of their animals. We have since transferred our puppy's care to another veterinary hospital and wish your clinic the best moving forward. read more

Unsanitary & messed up a prescription by a lot causing my pet end up in the Emergency ER.

We have never had an issue with them in over 25 years of their services. Even with the changes in staff and ownership. The cost is the cost..i have looked up alternatives and most places cost the same on most vaccines and procedures. Do your research. Trust your gut. Don't take my word for it only. Don't be late. Don't miss your appointments with out full 24hr notice. Make sure you state yourself clearly on what your needs are and what you will and won't do. read more

This business is continually trying to get more money while simultaneously not treating your animals. I was very apparent I had two older cats at home and was bringing in a stray kitten and wanted to make sure the kitten was entirely healthy before exposing them to my other cats. We paid 800$ for spay and additional health exams and they told us she would be ready to meet the others after an adjustment period. Within a week of her being home she spread ear mites, fleas and worms. When this was brought to their attention they said there is nothing they could do except apologizing for not offering a fecal test at the time of spay rather than offering to fix their mistakes. Now I have to pay triple the amount to go get my cats taken care of at another location. read more

Worst service I have ever received, I called the vet multiple times to see what their late policy was. I was told 15 mins I get there at 13 mins and the lady then tells me no it's 10 mins when the girl who told me 15 mins was behind her... I ask for a written policy. She told me they had none... then I ask ok so then why every other time I have came here been 15 mins.. then she proceeds to say "you do whatever the fuck/hell you need to do" when I ask her to find me the policy because at this point I'm being told different things it sounds like it's being made up.. she verbally used the word hell and fuck at her own job?? That's baffling to allow that behavior with clients. If you can't agree on a lie or fake policy don't have one.. and don't charge people $88 as a late fee when clearly you have no late policy. Took over a month to get seen. It feels incredibly unsanitary inside; 20- and 30 year old posters still hung, so I know they haven't been cleaned behind. It gives me hoarder vibes. I expect some amount of pet smell however it REEKED of stale urine. They took my pet away for shots, which I feel was unnecessary and counterintuitive to providing comfortable care, leading to me being distrustful in their handling of my pet. I asked about charges when scheduling my visit but was charged unexpectedly for things that were not disclosed to me and I wasn't provided with all of the care I asked for (which I would have known had they not taken my pet away). They also sent promotional e-mails to the provided email address, making me extremely uncomfortable about my data privacy. Their prices seemed unusually high and having since been to other better vets in the area, I received more competent care for lower costs in all of them, including the walkthrough of information from the vets themselves. All in all, I would feel uncomfortable returning to this clinic. EDIT: hi. It's been about a year and I received a letter for overdue payment from this vet. The letter does not describe what this payment is apparently for. I paid the full amount of what was charged the day of my appointment, and there was no disclosure to me about any further payments in any other case. The letter threatens to send my "outstanding debt" to collections (again, no description of what this supposed payment is for) They do not answer my phone calls in regard to this. Whatever they decided to charge me after I left that business is not my problem. Cancel policy are not disclosed, when you messages or text if hours before they answer. they bully you in to getting service you don't want. Zero good business service. BEWARE!!!! If you can handle dealing with incompetent administrative staff this place is for you! They have had three strikes with me- not because of the vets- they are great but because of the incompetent support staff. I called Monday to set an appointment and they told me I couldn't get anything until next week so I told her that online says they have an 830 available this Thursday she checked and said oh boy you're lucky yes we do I said great so 830 Thursday morning! I get here today at 8:30 and she says your appointment is at 2 PM and I said no it's not and she argued with me and I said then someone must've changed my appointment because when I called on Monday it was for 8:30 in the morning and she said well that's not possible we're more than 10 days out for appointments I said well that's funny because how could I've got to 2 PM today if I called Monday but I couldn't have gotten at 8:30 in the morning if I called Monday???? So I explain to her what happened and the conversation And she comes back with I guess we can try to fit you in what is your appointment for?? Now this brings me to the other issue- I bring my puppy in for his 10 week wellness check and now for his 14 week and they ask me why I'm bringing him in!?!? I've had to explain it three time each time and then again when I get there! They ask for a fecal sample and when I bring it in they ask me what it's for and why did I bring it in. When I tell them the vet asked for it they just tell me "oh huh well we will figure it out" the degree of incompetence and lack of knowledge is frightening. Not to mention that I have asked to have the contact information updated EVERY TIME I call and when my pups labs came back they called my partners old out dated number. So I call wondering why I haven't gotten my results- only to have them argue with me that they left a message and I should check that- I finally got them to tell me the results! It's been a battle and it really shouldn't be this hard- if the front office staff were to be completely changed the way I would reconsider. And don't bother complaining they will just dismiss it as a misunderstanding and nothing will change- they know their administrative staff is crap and don't care. Now that my puppy had his last shots I have been looking for an alternate place to go! *******UPDATE******* My puppy swallowed a rock- I was turned away from 4 ERs and 6 Vet offices this one included. However they did take him In next day while admitting that had the rock moved i might have lost him In the night. I get places are full but it's disturbing to know that when you have an emergency all of these places can turn you away without a thought. I was glad my baby got in and landed in emergency surgery within hours I just hate that he had to wait a while day and that I could have lost him. I'm a 65 year old, disabled dog owner, on very low fixed income. I got approved for a $235 voucher from Tacoma Humane Society to have my 7 month old puppy neutered. After several text, emails and no callbacks for a few day, they finally gave me, they finally emailed me a price range of between of $223 and $942. And that is after subtracting my voucher. Who in their right mind would take a chance on a range of costs like that? To them, my voucher is worth nothing, except free money, leaving me with an amount owed without a voucher. That is nothing but predatory business practice. I called another Veterinarian and within minutes they let me know that my voucher would cover everything, including shots. Tacoma Humane Society, myself and whomever else is in need of Veterinary Services don't deserve to be taken advantage of. Staff and doctors are incompetent to the point of negligence and dishonest. They killed my ferret doing a routine dental procedure then tried to shift blame on me and blatantly LIED on my animal's file saying they were threatened by my boyfriend when he went to pick up the body. I tried to use Amazon for my cats prescription food. You have to choose the vet clinic and Amazon will reach out to them. 5 days went by and the food didn't ship. I called the office and was told it needed to be under my brothers name since he was the one on our Cats file. I changed the shipping address to his name and still didn't ship. I called again and was told they didn't know how Amazon worked in a rude way. I didn't know what else to do since they wouldn't approve the order. So I had to use their website to order the food. I used Spanaway Vet Clinic for my first Boxer, and then my second Brindle boxer after I got him from a breeder in Canada. My youngest boxer (Brindle) swallowed a squeaky toy while I was at work and my pregnant wife did not have the heart to ipecac him. Fast forward I bring him in for an xray scan of his stomach and instestines and I am told it has passed with no risk of foreign object blockage (very deadly in dogs and costs thousands to surgically remove part of their intestines). The next week my puppy throws up another piece of the squeaky. I am absolutely livid about this. I will never go back to Spanaway vet because this could have killed my dog if it made it into his intestines when they charged me almost $1,000 and made an incorrect call. read more

This place is just out for your money. Three days in a row called in and told someone would call me back. On Monday morning at 7 am I called to get my dog in and was told that I could bring her in for cytopoint injection. When I brought her in I was told that the "call center" gave me that I information and that was incorrect. The lady at the desk who looked like she just rolled out of bed told me I would need to make an appt and gave me a date almost 2 Months out. Well my experience here has changed over the years since my original review. I had my cat neutered here @ 6 months old and initially he was ok. 3 months later he started having behavior issues and spraying on things so I brought him in and was told it was a UTI. Treated him for that but the behavior stayed the same. Finally I let him outside thinking maybe that's what he wanted. He goes outside for the first time and breaks his tooth. I brought him to another vet for care and they said oh he's not neutered. I said what?! So I brought him back here to ask why they didn't neuter my cat when I paid for them to do so?! The male veterinarian agreed it felt like a testicle was still there so he agreed to neuter him again and he would remove the remaining tooth at the same time. I wasn't happy with how his tooth looked post removal, I even questioned why it looked like there was bone exposed to that area. I was told it was fine. Fast forward 2 years and I had to take my cat to the ER vet for something unrelated and I asked that vet about the area and she said it looked like there was still tooth there. So I went back to Spanaway Vet to inquire about it. Dr. Anderson was so nice about the situation. They referred me to another vet to get X-rays to see if tooth fragments were present because they don't have an X-ray machine. That vet confirmed there was a large chunk of tooth still there so they surgically removed it. Luckily I didn't have to pay for this procedure, Spanaway Vet did. But do you think they called and apologized about the situation? Nope. Long story short- 2 botched surgeries on my cat- don't trust this Vet office!! read more

I have been to this vet 3 times with exotics. They claim to be exotic vet but are NOT. Every animal died and i honestly could have done better myself at home without extraordinary bills. For my rabbit they charged me $800 without giving me an estimate or getting my approval for surgery. I asked that my rooster with bumblefoot NOT be put under anesthesia because it was unnecessary and birds have high death rate. They put him under did not get cut into him anymore than I did or get his infection out and he died on the table. He was not sick acting eating drinking fine. I am sorry I did the right thing and paid. They won't tell me the name of the vet who worked on him and mysteriously the paper I signed saying NO anesthesia disappeared. Do not trust them or give them business! Office manager has no customer service skills and not nice! I went here because my other vet was out two weeks with appointments. I had no wait time when i called and was happy to learn that they take walk-ins. The staff has been very friendly and my pets absolutley love it there. I like how they allowed my daughter to listen to her pets heart beat. She thought that was the most fascinating thing! There's sufficient parking, it's easy to get to, and they have more than enough seating. The costs I thought we're pretty reasonable. I've been to other offices that would charge for every little detail and twice the amount. I highly recommend this place for all of owners. read more

Sign says to call when you arrive. I called, they put me on hold for 9 minutes until I finally just walked inside. No sense of urgency at the front desk and they weren't very welcoming. They seemed to be having a difficult morning, but im not sure, as this is my first visit. Took 30 minutes just to get checked in. INEFFECTIVE STAFF, VETS NOT QUALIFIED TO TREAT EXOTIC ANIMALS, CONTRIBUTED TO DEATH OF OUR PARROT The best way to describe our experience with the Spanaway Veterinary Clinic is nightmarish. I am writing to share our story and experience so pet owners of exotic animals can be warned. Long story short, we had a beautiful baby cape parrot, Nabu. One day I noticed that she didn't seem right and took her to Spanaway. First review on the vets. So there are a couple of vets there all claiming to be qualified to treat exotic animals. Not in my opinion because anyone with an inkling of experience with birds understand that they are extremely fragile and can die quickly. So they would need a treatment plan immediately. But essentially, the vets acknowledged that Nabu looked sick, BUT only recommended doing tests, and then sent us home to sit tight for results! We felt completely helpless. But being inexperienced, I thought this was how all vets worked. But totally untrue. Good vets are proactive. They could recommend starting a treatment before tests results are back such as starting anti-biotics, injecting fluids, or look into hospitalization. Their grossly passive strategy of "let's do tests, and wait for results before we do anything" delayed critical treatment for our beloved parrot. By Wednesday, Nabu was getting worse, not eating and losing a lot of weight. We were desperate. We went to Spanaway again. But again, the doctor said we had to wait for tests. But I came prepared this time and ask if we could start anti-biotics and inject fluids, which was suggested by the pet store who have ample experience with birds. Spanaway complied, but we had to recommend it! To me that is a huge oversight on their part. It was like going to the doctor and the patient needed to advise the doctor on their own treatment, absolutely ridiculous and what a tragic joke it was on us! Next, review on the staff. The office staff was indescribably inefficient. In fact, I ended up doing a lot of the leg work for the office. The doctor had said that bloodwork would be back in 2 days. It was a horrendous ordeal just to get those results. We called so many times but each time the response was always "we'll check and call you back" blah blah blah, they never once got back to us! In the end, I asked for the lab's phone number and called myself and learned that they were in fact ready. The agent said she would send the results over to the clinic right away. Not trusting Spanaway at ALL anymore, I actually drove down to the clinic. When I got there, I asked for the tests. The receptionist had to gall to tell me they were not ready without even checking and added that the labs only send results when they were ALL done. That was a straight out lie because the doctor clearly said that bloodwork would come back within 2 days and they would call us immediately. Now I don't know if she lied intentionally or she was simply misinformed, but it does show me a grossly disorganized and ineffective staff that was more concerned with dodging problems and calls than helping patients. And that is unacceptable in a place where such disorganized operations can result in delays in critical treatment. But I kept my cool and simply took a seat and called the lab right at the clinic. I waited on the phone for 30 mins before an agent answered. The agent confirmed again that the tests were ready and I had her fax it over asap, which then I returned to the receptionists to tell her the tests were just faxed. And that is how we got the blood test results. It was exhausting and demoralizing dealing with that clinic. But it gets better. A vet tech comes out to tell me that the bloodwork looked normal, which means nothing can be done yet! Now we've got to wait for the cultures to come back, which will be another 1-2 weeks! "Oh but I don't think my bird will make it," I say. "Awww, I'm sorry but we've got to wait for the tests," the tech replies. So go home again and sit tight! Unbelievable! As stated, the experience with Spanaway was nightmarish. By Thursday, Nabu was severely sick. My husband and I were both at emotional breaking points. Finally, Friday we took her to another vet, Evergreen at University Place that specialized in exotic animals. Evergreen took action immediately, they put our baby in an oxygen chamber, gave her a nebulizer, etc. But unfortunately, we were too late and Nabu passed away later that night. I'm sharing this story because I feel we owe it to Nabu that everyone knows her tragic experience at the Spanaway Veterinary Clinic. I also hope that the clinic sees this post and make necessary changes to the severe inefficiencies of their operations and also recognize that there are gross inadequacies in their treatment strategy. Any true pet owner would agree that a pet is like your child, and losing Nabu has been painful for us. I truly believe if we had taken her to Evergreen from the start, things would have been different. read more

This place is great - especially if you need help with "exotics", like a rabbit. My fiancee and I woke up this past weekend to one of our pet rabbits, Shelby, not feeling well. When we realized that in addition to not moving around and not eating much, when he was moving he was falling over, we rushed out to the vet ER in Lakewood. We'd been there before with out other bun and it had gone fine. This did not go fine. Long story short, not only did our boy not get really any treatment at that ER, they couldn't even tell us if the doctor he was seeing was rabbit savvy. I got 4 different answers to that questions from 3 different people. So, we were desperate when we had to bring him back Sunday morning after there was no improvement and we found out (after they told us otherwise) that it was the same vet he'd already seen. Thank god for Spanaway Vet Clinic. We called and they said we could bring our boy in right away, which we did. After a short (about an hour) wait we got an update. It was not the best news in the world, but we knew it was going to be like that. I'm currently in the process of administering all our bunnies needed drugs for treatment while we see how things go over the next week or two. He just ate some banana and greens on his own - his first voluntary food since Saturday. I can't say enough about how comfortable Dr. Wright made us feel. Her bedside manner was great, she explained things clearly and concisely, and most importantly I could hear real knowledge in what she said and actual compassion and care for our little guy in how she said it. Even though they don't offer emergency walk-in, they responded to my phone message in a timely manner and found a way to work me in. Took my dog there for a limp leg. Didn't know we were supposed to stay inside our car after giving our pet to them (no one told me this). Got home, vet called and was very cordial and explained the issues my dog was having. Awesome! Things have really changed and not for the better in my opinion. I used to be able to call in and the receptionists knew me, my boys and our needs. I called in today and it was a new receptionist that I didn't know, I felt that she kept cutting me off when I was trying to explain my problem to her, I also felt that she was caring me a liar by not looking further into my boys file to verify past treatment practices. I ended up hanging up on her and am now researching new Vets for me boys. read more

I had to stop into Spanaway Vet to pick up an item yesterday and got my dogs nails trimmed while I was there. $41!! For a nail trim! I asked why so much and she said they now charge a $15 tech fee for everything. What?? So $26 for the nail trim and $15 for the tech fee just to bring him back. I am horrified! As soon as I got back to my truck I called Woofers, just down the road to see if that is the going rate these days and she said they charge $16 for it. Yeah, go to Woofers! read more

A year ago I gave this vet a 5 star review. My opinion has changed. Ever since we started bringing our Aussie there when he was 8 weeks, the front office always seemed annoyed with him whining or crying. Aussie are VERY vocal there's nothing I can change about that. Anytime I would call to make an appointment the front office staff has never been the friendliest either. Even the Doctors there don't listen, and just say "oh well" don't know what's wrong. Last Sunday 11/22 I brought in my 7 month old heeler who they have never seen because I take her somewhere else. I needed her to be seen ASAP due to her controllable coughing/throwing up. The vet that saw her said she has a contagious cough, gave us a cough suppressant and a nausea pill. Neither was working because she would just cough it up. I knew that something else was going on. I made her another appointment at her regular vet on Tuesday 11/24 and they were able to a full exam on her, and found that she has bronchitis!!!! Her regular vet gave us antibiotics to treat it! All can say is, just go with your gut and pay attention to how they treat you and your fur child. read more

Pretty sure my cat they charged me an arm and leg for spaying is PREGNAT!!! I am so not trusting my puppy to them again with that type of surgery if they can't do something so simple on a cat. Not only that, I was told Oscar just has a sensitive tummy to any new foods when I asked why he puked so often. Well, he pukes a lot more ever since they crammed all these "required" shots down his throat. He hasn't been the same since. And my doggie, was crying uncontrollably after his first round of shots. He actually bled after the Rabies shot, he didn't like being stabbed the first time and jumped the second time. Called in super worried only to be told my dog is HIGH DRAMMA.... Went in, waited over 20 minutes to be seen, I was finally able to hold him without him crying. So I left. Probably just distracted by the other dog next to us waiting in the lobby. But he did it again half an hour later at home, so yeah, he was feeling uncomfortable, but they left me hangin out front without being seen and wasting my time. Not to mention my first experience with them, I was told to bring my cat in by 9 for neuter, get there and then was told that the info was incorrect and check-in is between 7-8. Quite the difference there. My friend referred this place to me but I am just scratching my head as to why that is. read more

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME HERE WITH YOUR PRECIOUS ANIMALS!!!! I called about my cat after she had a surgical procedure done in their clinic. I tried for a week to find different ideas to help my cat recover from this procedure. I call and speak to Cameron. He tells me they are very busy so the doctor will get back to me not till after 6pm it tomorrow morning. I felt that was very unreasonable and he told me that my cat was obviously not that important to me otherwise I would have called sooner! read more

When I lived back in Spanaway, this vet clinic was my go to for great service and close proximity to my house. I recently went back to WA for vacation and my mom needed help by taking her dog to the clinic for shots while she was at work. I went and called around to get quotes on pricing for shots and flea medication. The lady who answered the phone was very courteous and told me they do sell Comfortis flea medication there, and were having a deal. They also had a special going on for new clients. I told them I would be at the appointment but was taking my mom's dog in, and they said it was no problem and walk ins were available. When I get to the establishment, I was told to fill out the paperwork in my name since I was the person present with my mom's pet. I know I was in their system since I used to live in the area, and it wouldn't be a problem. Either way, they had just switched from paper copy to digital so everyone was a "new patient" and still qualify for new client on the first exam. Well we got seen and the vet told me they don't sell comfortis. I asked why would I have been told they sell it over the phone then? I end up taking the vet's suggestion and try out nexguard. After the appt, I go to pay. 1. They put me as the owner of the dog when I told them over the phone and as I was checking in that I'm here for my mom's dog. The lady said it would take too long for her to change everything over and they would eventually get to it. 2. I no longer applied for their new client special since I was a client from years ago and they made me the owner of my mom's dog. 3. I didn't apply for a military discount because I was a walk in appt I'm very disappointed in how I was mislead and this is NOT the communication nor service I had received years ago when I was living in Spanaway. I've given them repeat business and they were very great to my dog. And I wish that my mom's dog and my experience taking him had the same level of service. read more
