We had a dog that was taken care of by a sitter when we were away on a vacation last week, from June 7/2026 to June 16/2026. On June 14/2026, we got a call from our dog sitter informing us that our dog got a small puncture on the side of her body (maybe from a protruding small branch on a bush on the sitter's back yard) so the dog sitter took her to this place., Button Vet. Hospital on Durango street, South Tacoma Way. The bill was $371.18 for the following: Outpatient exam: $130.00 Outpatient procedure: $51.00 (from shaving the fur around the puncture wound which was less than half an inch in diameter) Pharmacy: $129.00 (antibiotics, two different kind of pain pills?, crazy!) Service fee (for what?): $60.00 Total $371.81. Insane! This is a rip off! I wish our sitter did not take her to this place. It is not an emergency. She got a small puncture and it did not seem to bother her. I think antibiotic would be sufficient if that. Our dog still runs around, plays on the dog park this morning, and still eats normally. The level of rudeness and disrespect I experienced from the staff was unbelievable. From the moment I called, I was spoken to with an attitude and made to feel like I was inconveniencing them for trying to get my dog's medication. Bella has Stage 4 heart disease, and I called to have her heart medication refilled because she cannot go without it. After two full days and multiple phone calls, the prescription still hadn't been called in. Every veterinarian I've used in the past has treated this type of medication as a priority and had it called in the same day. When I mentioned that I had called twice the day before, the staff member's response was, "You actually called three times," in a sarcastic, dismissive tone instead of addressing why the medication still hadn't been sent. When I explained that it was urgent because Bella has Stage 4 heart disease, I was told, "It's not urgent." No pet owner should ever be spoken to that way while trying to get medication for a critically ill dog. The lack of urgency, poor communication, and disrespectful customer service were completely unacceptable. I will not be returning, and I would strongly encourage anyone considering this clinic to think carefully about how they treat both their clients and their pets. read more

My cat Olympia (named because that's where Dr. Jeremiah found and rescued her) actually seems to be happy to see Dr. Jeremiah (no small miracle!). They have urgent care same day appointments. This how ended up finding this vet. So far we have take two very senior dogs here for urgent appointments and they were seen right away on a same day urgent appointment. The routine appointments are a week out. We also had the remains of our cat cremated here and for a personal cremation and paw print it was only $109 total. Prices are reasonable and the staff super friendly. It takes months to get in with our vet and the emergency vet cost an arm and a leg. Because we have had three very positive appointments with Buttons, we decided to make Buttons the regular vet for one of our dogs. read more

Just switched from old vet as their prices had risen significantly after COVID and staff was hot and cold. We found Buttons in an emergent situation and the staff was so nice and kind we decided to take our pal here for regular checkups and vaccines. We moved to Tacoma a few years ago and they were the only vets post covid who would take new patients. They have been truly great for my elder dog who has been through a broken leg surgery, a stroke and just this weekend a massive eye and throat infection. They got us in and took amazing care of my dog at the last minute. Truly a caring veterinarian. My only gripe is how long medicine refills take. Beyond that tho, A+. 5 Star. read more

And all the other things that happened in between. Our guy absolutely loved her and she loved him. When we made the compassionate and very painful decision to put him down, Dr Jeremiah had to be the one to help us. My sister just took my sweet dog in because I'm in the process of moving out state. He has a full ligament tear. They got him in on an urgent care appointment that was scheduled the day prior and at a reasonable price compared to other urgent care fees in the area. My sister said they were top notch in their care and she didn't wait at all. The vet gave her recommendations and was able to do a blood draw without heavy sedation, keeping the cost lower. Since I'll be paying for a full major surgery, I really appreciate that. He has all the meds he needs while we wait to schedule surgery. Her total appointment time including them running his blood work was just over an hour start to finish! Grateful to have her in and out as she was doing a HUGE favor to me by bringing him in for me. Glad it didn't take all of her only day off. Will definitely be recommending them to other friends and family in the area. read more

I took my 10yr old dog in for a senior wellness exam as he was drinking an excessive amount of water. Tests were run and he was diagnosed diabetic. Dr Jensen prescribed a starter dose of insulin and a follow up was scheduled 2 weeks later to do a glucose panel. This would make sure the correct dosage was being administered. I received a message the day before the appointment from the front desk stating the appointment is cancelled due to a lack of test strips. I called and relayed my frustration as to how this oversight occurred and why did they not foresee the need to obtain more. I called back a few days later and was concerned that my dog was not eating. The tech assured me this is normal. The following week- also the day before his rescheduled glucose appt. My dog was experiencing distress. I called button vet and they stated he needed to go to an emergency facility. My dog ended up having to be euthanized due to diabetic complications. I firmly believe Dr. Jensen and the staff at button vet are to blame. The correct dosage of insulin was not being administered nor was a glucose panel done to ensure this. I wonder how many other pets have suffered from this incompetence read more

I called my dog's routine vet to make an urgent appointment and they were so booked out they referred me to Button. Not only were they able to see me the same day, but they were so dang kind and helpful. My dog has cost me thousands of dollars in veterinary bills over the last year and I am so relieved to have added a quality, competent vet to his list of care providers that doesn't sting my bank account. The staff is very personable and I truly felt like they cared for him. Button specializes in Frenchie care so if you have a brachycephalic breed, definitely check these guys out. read more

My daughter-in-law referred me to Button's Veterinary Hospital when our 9 1/2 year old Rat Terrier Mix suddenly became very ill, in which we had to euthanize him. I just want to start by saying my one-star review has nothing to do with the two ladies who practically run the place-Jenny & Barb. My review has to do with the complete lack of compassion exemplified toward my poor dog the day she died. We had to rush home from our vacation on a Thursday-we were 5.5 hours away. I called shortly after they opened to get my poor senior doggie in to be euthanized. We had just had a lot of expensive tests done on her revealing a grocery list of health ailments and illnesses and they were quickly causing her health to decline. When i called sobbing on the phone and requesting a euthanasia that afternoon, the front desk lady told me they did not have any openings.....WHAT? She told me to call back in the morning. NO! I explained she wouldn't make it that long and she matter-of-factly referred me to the emergency vet. Needless to say, we were showed some mercy and compassion by another vet who CAME TO MY HOUSE to peacefully put my girl to sleep. It wasn't even his patient. Let me say that over the last six months, this office has made over $1,100 off us trying to help our dog. The latest tests they prescribed her two medicines that she didn't even get to finish. They always had an opening when they knew there would possibly be a large bill attached, but apparently euthanasia is below them. This place didn't used to be like...This. When Dr. Reid was there, things were SO different. Now, it seems like all they want is your money. There were times it took OVER A WEEK to get a vet to call me with my dog's test results after i had to call 3+ times. All the original (GOOD) people who are/have working/worked there are phasing out. For over 10 years, Button has been our vet. Through multiple guinea pigs and cats, they've been there for us. They're SO good that we kept them after our move out of town. The entire staff is caring and competent, but we have to give Dr. Claypool a shout out. With empathy and skill, she has given our cats longer, happier lives. I made an appointment for my Frenchie to be seen because he has something going on with his eyes. I was told they would call and confirm the appointment the day before. (I was driving at the time so I needed the appointment call from them) No one ever called. I called this morning to confirm that my appointment is today and they said it was last Friday. They didn't have my name but said they had my phone number and they left a message. My phone is set so no messages can be left. She told me she couldnt tell me, id have to bring him in before she could give me a ball park cost and that the September schedule wasnt out (its Sept.1) and could i call back on the 10th. After moving to Tacoma from Seattle I wanted to quickly find a new vet close to home. I came to Yelp and saw the 5 star review and made an appointment for my two dogs. The front desk and the doc that examined my dogs were just "doing their jobs" and were not friendly or made me feel comfortable at all. The worst was yet to come though. As I went to check-out I was handed a bill for nearly $300. I was never informed of any of these charges as we were going through the normal exam. For an example, they charged me for stool check yet neither of my dogs had given a sample - I was handed two bags for collection but was charged IN ADVANCE. Next, both dogs had a slight ear infection (the summer was ending from loads of swimming and it happens), however, I was charged for TWO tubes of medication. My dogs live at the same house! I flipped and no one would help. No doctor came out to assist or explain. I was just told that this is the bill. I paid, although I truly felt like just taking my dogs and walking out, then returned home and called their office back to speak to the owner. That call didn't go well at all and I was offered a complimentary return visit for a check-up. No thanks!!! read more

My 10 wk old puppy arrived with mange. The vet upped her med from .07 ml every third day to .1 ml everyday. Puppy had an adverse reaction to higher dose due to depressed immune system. I called the vet and it took 4 hrs for the vet to call me back just to tell me to bring puppy in. Then the vet gave charcoal and fluid bolus and sent us home stating she should be better in 24 hrs. She died that night. I went back next day to vet for a Cause of Death. Got the letter a week later. Plus they CHARGED me for these visits!!! I will be looking for new vet... Ok, two weeks after my puppy died, my vet from this place calls me and accuses me of submitting a complaint to a vet in TX, stating I did it in her name....NOT! I mailed a letter to that TX vet complaining about the so called health cert he signed off on and included my Cause of Death letter from this vet. There was no way I did anything in her name!! She didn't even want to listen to me, and she was rude. If I could take one of my stars away I would. And they wonder why the low rating...go figure. read more

I calle dthis clinic for an estimate and they were wanting $50 for an initial exam and after hearing how much the estimate was I need not call them back. Value Clinic in Puyallup is further but they seemed more sincere on the phone for my cat's situation. VCA offers free first exams but after that it's pretty pointless because they charge a minimum of $60 for simple testing and the total for the dental work was going to be $600 - $900 dollars. I called around and everyone seems to charge $50 for an exam. Value Pet Clinic in Puyallup is $31 for an exam. I am grateful for the phone courtesy and I hope when I get her over there I don't change my mind about them. read more

Unprofessional and rude! My cat was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor. They left a voicemail telling me this and also telling me that there was nothing that could be done. I tried to call back and get more information as my cat is only 9 years old and he is my baby, the Vet was extremely rude and sarcastic, making me feel bad for asking a couple of questions. Instead of answering my questions she started complaining about how busy she is with coronavirus, I entertained her complaints to be nice and in return she said "I don't have time to chat!". I said bye and she hung up on me. I was only able to ask 1 of 3 questions that I had before she started complaining and being sarcastic. Little does she know that I am a healthcare worker on the frontlines! I am never going back to Buttons again. You'd hope that your Vet would give priority to patients that are dying. Please don't assume that you are the busiest person during the coronavirus, because there are people like myself working on the frontlines that are not only busy but also risking their lives. read more

I took my cat to Dr. Jeremiah for about 8 years and I thought she was great. I am not sure what has happened in the last year and a half or so, it seems it is completely all about money to her. I don't know if she is burnt out or what. This is the most expensive vet in town, as far as I have seen, and we should feel a little more compassion when we take our animals in. I love Barb at the front desk and this one star in NO way reflects on her. She is kind, efficient, and does her job fantastically. When a vet gets to the point that the animals are not the number one concern...it is time to retire. read more

I have used this vet for routiene care and when I least expected it. They are very kind giving and their hearts are in their work. My dog doesnt even know he is being checked out because he stays on the floor and the vet I have gets down on the floor with him and puts her hands on him where she needs to in a very loving, non-intrusive way. Next thing you know, he is on his way out the door. The vet is so cool. She does not waist time or money. I highly recommend them. The office staff is very supportive too. They are located om S. Oh, animal lovers...where do I begin? Settle in - this is going to be lengthy. Let me begin by saying I want to *try* to be fair with this review...but I fear it will not end well. Let me also begin by saying that I just changed my star rating from one to two stars. The ONLY reason for this is that I want to give my two-star props to the vets that I've dealt with. They truly are a caring bunch. Unfortunately the front desk staff has screwed them over on one or more occasions. About a year ago, we "adopted" Winston - he's a Westie. Adorable little bugger. When we got him, he was matted, stinky, bald in several areas, really REALLY scabby and itchy - BUT WE SAID YES ANYWAY. Apparently his last family couldn't keep up with his meds and he had become too high maintenance for them. We took him in to get evaluated - he was diagnosed with Chronic Skin issues resulting from Demodex Mange. Meds and diet change were prescribed and we began our journey to bring him back to a furry, non-itchy happy pooch. My issue with Button's is not how we have been able to bring him back to the picture of health. It's the manner in which I have had to fight tooth and nail to get to this point. Once we knew that the meds were exactly what he needed to make him better, we were asked to keep making office visits so that we could get more. After the 3rd office visit, I asked the Vet if there was any chance I could just get a refillable prescription, because it's not the cost of the meds that were killing us...it was the cost of the office visit ON TOP of the meds that was really hitting us hard. We had already established that he was "chronic" - the vets words, not mine. We had the right blend of meds to fix the issue. He was dramatically different from the first time I brought him in. His skin went from black bald and irritated to pink and furry and clear. No more itching. But we knew, because we had run out of meds at one point - that it was 100% NECESSARY for him to be on them. So the vet agreed to allow 6 months of refills. I've sensed hesitation from the front desk staff to fill our prescriptions - who are more interested in gossiping about their own dogs issues rather than dealing with the clients standing in front of them. I've been met with "We need 48 hour notice" and "I'm going to need to check your file" for the last 5 months of refills. They know who I am - because a HUGE deal was made when we brought him in and his progress throughout his treatment. So they seem to just be slow-playing me. The last time I needed the meds, they said they couldn't get them to me for 3 days. TO COUNT 30 PILLS?!?!?!? It's not like they are back there with a chemistry set mixing elements from the periodic table to create the pills I need! So, I went down there - and waited...and waited...and waited. And when they said it may take awhile, I said, "That's fine, I'll wait." and I waited some more. I know that if I had made an appointment for an office visit, I would have left that day, that MOMENT with meds for my dog. You can't tell me that they are SO BUSY that they can't count out 30 pills and put them in a container when I call to ask for a refill. I've called with 3 days of pills left and was given a hassle about needing to give them more time. Yesterday I called in our refill - one bottle said 1 refill remaining the other has 4. They said we need to have an office visit to get more. And now, all of a sudden, they need to WATCH CLOSELY one of the meds they gave us. I specifically ASKED then - since he is "chronic" if he will build a tolerance to these pills or if there were any side-effects - the answer was "No" to both questions. They are the ones that gave out the refill orders...they are the ones refilling our prescription. I should be able to get this last bottle filled and I'll have no issue whatsoever to make a follow-up appointment - but this has gotten out of hand - at this point I feel that they are using my dogs health as a HOSTAGE to get another office visit out of me. I have been going to this vet for over 20 years. We have had our ups and downs, but no more than any other thing in life. I would say the staff is caring and friendly. I think a few of the vets here have come and gone over the years, but the vet taking care of my cats has been there the whole time. Dr. Claypool "The Cat Lady" has always given my 2 cats top notch care. She took the time to get to know us over the years and was VERY sympathetic when we had to put our 17yr old cat "Gizmo" down after many years of slowly failing kidney. Dr Claypool told us very early on when our cat got sick, and what to expect. She gave us an idea of what we needed to do, and suggestions on our options, and allowed us to do what we thought best. The staff was VERY accomodating when my wife, 2 daughters and I were falling about the place sobbing and crying when we put our Giz down. I truly got the feeling they cared alittle more than just about when we would pay our bill. I also have a 15yr old cat "TanToes". I believe Button Veterinary has helped me keep both these cats around as long as they have been. I have a boxer dog now, and she goes to Button also. It is a no brainer for me. I have bumped heads with the doctors, and the front desk, but all in all we have worked it out. Kinda like family almost. For top notch animal care I will go to Button Veterinary everytime! read more

They were very rude on the phone. Sent my fiance to the appointment with our dog to get his shots and to check out his paw, which was bleeding. Apparently, they were even worse in person. Complete lack of animal behavior understanding, when my dog was anxious and clearly uncomfortable, the lady did not approach slowly or speak calmly or practice basic comfort tactics. She approached aggressively with no regard to how he was responding. My fiance was trying to comfort him, soothe him into it, and they were crowding and escalating the entire experience. She then "offered" to "take him to the back" to proceed. This seemed extremely suspicious due to the way she was handling him and the attitude she carried. My fiance refused, stating that she can continue in the current room. The lady insisted, he explained he did not want her to drag him away just to pin him forcefully down. The lady got extremely frustrated, and very unprofessionally yelled, actually YELLED, "Then what do you want me to do!?!" I could NOT believe this. How does this person have a job like this while carrying such a level of unprofessionalism and complete lack of compassion? She then proceed to MOCK my fiance and even yelled out of the door "Does anyone want to help me in here?" All she had to do was simply introduce herself to my dog, a quick sniff and pet, and move in a non-aggressive manner.... I wouldn't think it would be too much to ask of a VETERINARIAN. After putting my dog through more than necessary in the way she handled him, she then lectured my fiance about obedience training. He explains that he is very well trained (he is a husky who can go for hikes off leash no problem), and she actually said "Obviously not" because of the way he was trying to run away from her. Beyond pissed off and will NOT be returning. Maybe worth mentioning she didn't even ATTEMPT to clean his bloody paw. read more

My beloved puppy (7 yo ASD mix) was behaving strangely, and had been kind of "off" for a couple of weeks, but after a trip to the park, he couldn't get into the car, and was extremely lethargic. I decided that something was really wrong, and I needed to get him to the vet. I have been going to the same vet for 30 years, but over the last couple of years, I have just lost all confidence in him, and this was so mysterious that I just couldn't bring myself to go there. So I put a call out to friends asking for references. A couple of other clinics came up, but when I called, despite the symptoms I listed, nobody could see him soon. One said, you can bring him in, but the current wait is about 5 hours, I said can I put my name on the list and come in in 5 hours. No, first come first served with exception of extreme emergencies etc. Ok, next one couldn't get him in until Wed. despite his scary symptoms. Another friend recommended Button. I am so glad she did!! When I called I felt like I was talking to an old friend. The concern was genuine. They were able to get me in that afternoon, and they figured out the mystery. The vet let me tell my whole meandering story, the reality was this had been going on for awhile, just didn't realize it. Initially he thought it was something much more serious, xrays revealed that it was much less so, but he was correct in the area, and wasn't doing the hit/miss treatment. Ummm, let's try blood work, ummmm, let's try..... It was so refreshing! and within an hour we were on our way with some anti inflammatory (sp) and a recovery plan. While vet visits are never cheap, and never in the budget, my worse case scenario was not realized, and their fees were very reasonable. Thank you to this wonderful team! Not that I hope to have to visit the vet any time soon, but am so relieved I have found a vet that I won't dread going to. read more

I have been taking both my cat and dog here for years. I have even referred my parents to Buttons Vet, but as of late the service is extremely poor from the front office staff, to the veterinarians, to the management. I took my cat in because she was meowing early morning, and was told by the veterinarian that she was sure my cat had a thyroid tumor and was ready to treat her with radiation treatment. She advised me that she would be testing my cats thyroid to confirm her diagnosis. A day or two later I received a call from the vet stating my cat had normal thyroid levels and that since my cats blood was at the lab she would be testing one other test to confirm. About a week or two later I receive a bill in the mail for this add on lab test of $95. I was never advised that this would be an additional charge. When I called to complain the office manager was extremely rude and did nothing to assist after being a loyal customer for 7+ years. On top of that when I asked what exactly was tested during my cats blood draw only a partial thyroid test was completed. Even though the veterinarian told me that she was testing her thyroid as she was almost 100% sure my cat needed radiation treatment. When the other veterinarian gave me the results of this one blood draw (which came back normal) I was advised my cat needed an ultra sound as now she has stomach cancer, although there was nothing to support this. After 7+ years of being a loyal customer I will definitely not be using Buttons vet, the staff is not knowledgeable and tells you false diagnosis to get extra money. I added wet food to her diet and my cat is completely fine, does not have stomach cancer nor needs radiation treatment. We have used button for years, they lovingly helped us let go of our 17 year old border collie and have cared for all our pets. Recently we had a feral cat abandon 5 kittens for us to care for. Bottle feedings, ear infections and learning how to care for newborn kittens, Dr. Jenson and the team have been wonderful for us. I have been going to Button Vet for over 15 years. My vet there is Karen Claypool and she is amazing. I read some complaints from ppl who were looking for a cheap vet; all I can say is they are not more expensive than most vets here and I have trusted my many pets to them over the years as they go the extra mile. My sis says I am high maintenance. For me this office is always knowledgeable, courteous, caring, and flexible, and I recommend them highly. read more
