I've had Spalding donuts before but I've never been inside their shop. It smells so good in there! I stopped by around 8:30 this morning and there were 3 or 4 people in the store. I didn't wait for long and the woman at the register was friendly. The store itself feels like its frozen in time in a good way. The building has a lot of character. I got two cinnamon sugar, chocolate confetti and a plain glazed donut for a little over 5.00. I wanted to eat my donut as soon as I got in the car but had some self control..Now that I'm home I can't promise I'll still have that same self control! Every time I go to Spaldings it's like a roll of the dice. I keep going hoping that I will get the incredibly delicious glazed doughnut that I know they can make. I would rave about them and even take them to Louisville for my son and his wife to enjoy. But now, more often than not, I get exactly what I received this morning. Stale tasting, old glazed doughnuts. A whole box full (2dozen). I woke up extra early and dropped in this morning to get glazed doughnuts for my office. When I got to work and they opened the box..... Just sad. I should have looked in the box at the bakery but it wouldn't have really made a difference, I am not a person to make a scene or cause any kind of ruckus. I googled reviews to see if any one else has consistently experienced this, which led me to leave this review. I am just so very frustrated. Call the store...tell the staff... for what? As long as people line up and they sell out, what difference does it make for one complaint? Not to mention they're not very welcoming when you go in to purchase. Not mean at all, they just seem bothered. I know what a good doughnut they can make and to spend $30 for old doughnuts just makes me sad. Why do this to people trying to patronize your business? I'm afraid that I have taken my last trip to Spaldings doughnuts. No excuse for old, dry, cold doughnuts at 7AM. Dry, embarrassing and a complete waste of money. read more

I have eaten donuts from about 80% of the places on the list of top 10 donut shops in Lexington and none are even close to Spauldings. I have been eating these for almost 60 years going back to the old location. If you haven't tried a Spaulding donut, try one but go early and go get a warm one. WARNING, they run out and some days close early. When that happens, just come earlier the next time. read more

Stopped by yesterday morning to pick up an order of mixed donuts for my clients. Quick service and they got my order correct for the mixed dozen. For myself, I got a chocolate milk and a cream cheese danish. The danish was one of the best I have ever had. When I walked into my clients office with the white box tied up in string, they immediately knew where their treats had come from. Ok. I was expecting a real bakery. This is more of a "kind of a donut shop". I had the raisin cookie which was stellar. My friend had a donut and she said it was pretty good as well. The coffee, on the other hand, was FABULOUS. Service was initially not very friendly or helpful but after some conversation it warmed up considerably. So Spalding use to be my favorite donuts. I grew up on them. I now live in Louisville and don't get to have them that often has been a couple years since I was there. But today I had to drive through Lexington in the early morning so thought I would stop. I got there just as they open at 6:30 am. I got 6 donuts and was so happy until I had one. Well that donut was not from today so I tried another and nope it wasn't fresh either. I called and and told them I was just there and wanted to know when the donuts were made. They said they were made an hour ago. Well if they were only an hour don't know why they were so cold and I mean cold not room temp and tasted like they were from yesterday. How have I never reviewed Spaldings!? Some of the BEST doughnuts and baked goods in Lexington for sure. The bakery, on Winchester Rd, is a small establishment with no inside dining. On our last visit on a Saturday at 9am, there was no line and still plenty of doughnuts to order- but I have been when there is a line out the door and no doughnuts left to buy! Better to be an earlybird here. Spalding's used to be cash only- you can use your card now for a 3% charge. The prices here are very reasonable especially compared to other bakeries in town. So, my first time in Lexington and on my way out one morning I drove by this place and noticed so many people going in so I thought hey I need to check this out. It must be good. Upon entering I was greeted by a young black female. My interaction with her totally ruined my experience here. She was very flat, not friendly, when I told her it was my first time here she didn't seem interested. She told me what they're known for which are glazed donuts with a frown. I asked her question and she didn't seem like she wanted to answer it. She didn't even smile. I asked her if she was the owner and she said no and seemed like she was bothered by the question. I was going to buy more than one donut but after this interaction I just decided to buy one and get out of there. If the owner of the business is reading this, you need to train your staff to be more friendly especially in the morning but all damn day long. We stopped the other day while running errands and grabbed a dozen glazed donuts. We were excited based upon the reputation this place has. They handed the box out tied closed with string. When we opened it a bit later we were surprised to see donuts that were burnt, flat and greasy! We each tried one and they were awful! There was no flavor except for grease - they actually tasted more like a bad carnival funnel cake than a donut.... We threw everything away....yes, what we were eating and the entire dozen.... After trying almost every bakery in Lexington, Spalding's has been my favorite! Their donuts are sort of layered, a bit different than traditional yeast donuts, but they're perfectly sweet and soft. The glazed donuts are usually fresh out of the oven which are best to eat immediately! What I like even more than their traditional glazed is the chocolate glazed. The icing melts in your mouth and the dough is slightly crispy on the outside which I love. I also have had the glazed blueberry which is one of my favorite kinds of donuts. I've been told the crowds are bad in the morning, but at 9:30am on a Friday, I'm in and out very quickly. These donuts are very well priced and worth the visit if you haven't been!
