First time I went here last week, forgot to put my review on the amazing work I got done by Katerina. She took care of my hair very well, I was so unhappy of how it previously looked since I tried to change my own hair color at home which was a mistake. But here at Space Salon my hair got fixed, I obtained the color that I desired. My hair doesn't feel damaged at all since my hair I've put it through a lot in the past but Katerina did such a good job I can't wait to go back next week and go lighter. My hair was dark in the ends with red roots, she then fixed it and made it into a soft brown and when I go back I'll be going lighter thanks to her my boring black dark hair is finally a light warmer color. The hair dresser I saw messed up my hair and color, twice. I shared with Bianca what had happened, what my concerns were and what I wanted. I was very excited to have my hair cut and blown out here. But sadly the stylist did not capture the look I wanted. Despite me mentioning several times that I wanted long layers and just a few pieces to frame my face. I came out with several layers and lost the length of my hair. It took me over 2 years to grow out my hair to the healthy length. This is something I mentioned to the hair dresser. I can't say the salon as a whole was a terrible experience because it was not. But I definitely left there unhappy because I did not get the look I truly wanted. read more

Wish I could give more than 5 stars if Yelp allowed it. I am so glad that I found out about this salon and have gone here twice already. I booked Ozlem both times for my balayages and it was incredible! The first time was my first time ever getting a balayage so I had no clue. I just showed her a photo of what I wanted. She understood immediately and explained the entire process thoroughly. So recently was the second time seeing her and I was super excited about my new color choice. As you may all know, balayages can be long process, but with Ozlem on your side it is a breeze. She's an expert when it comes to finding the right toner combination and her blends are immaculate. I asked a girlfriend who was doing her cut/color and she said a stylist here, so I wanted to try out the same stylist. It just so happened that I found a groupon for a partial set of highlights at this salon-which I thought was a win win, plus I needed a cut. I read through the stipulations very carefully (which I always do with groupons) and didn't see any issue, so I purchased. Come to find out the groupon is SOLELY for hair students! NO WHERE on the groupon website does it say that! I've peeled over it several times thinking possibly I missed that. I personally am not comfortable going to any random person for my hair (even trying out this recommended stylist was a huge deal for me) especially a student, but apparently this stylist does not accept groupons-which is perfectly fine, but that should be stated on the website. I tried to return the groupon (which of course I can't) and then saw that the 'promotional value' (the highlights) expires, but the dollar value does not (I paid $55). I called and spoke to the owner, thinking possibly he could make a small concession for the miscommunication on their end (especially after I had spent $150 here the previous week, as I really needed a cut and color and was unaware of this policy until I had hauled all the way over here for my appointment). He then proceeded just to argue with me about it. $55 is not worth the argument, but just be aware that you indefinitely lost a client who would have otherwise been loyal. To those reading, if you do not care about your hair, having any sort of ongoing relationship with the salon, or customer service, this is the place for you. The salon is also not that nice (really chintzy) and overall staff unpolished, especially for service prices. I have learned my lesson fully, in that you get what you pay for, and any place that even offers a groupon is not a place you want to find yourself. read more

I love this salon! I had my third haircut yesterday with Stella and she is really amazing. In the past, I usually just bought haircut deals on Lifebooker and would float between salons, but Stella is the reason I'm going to keep returning to Space. I came in yesterday still undecided if I just wanted a trim or a to go with a more drastic change and do a "long bob." She reassured me how good a long bob would look for my face/hair texture. I am always apprehensive doing anything with my hair but she was confident, calmed my nerves, and gave me an awesome cut!! Why haven't I been here before? This salon is fabulous. I met with Janet a few days before my appointment and she instantly made me feel at ease. I told her what I wanted and she knew instantly. Ombré highlights for my boring brown hair. A few days later I went in for my appointment. I showed Janet a few pictures and she seemed confident that she would nail it. I sat in the hot seat as feelings of excitement and anxiety crossed paths. What will my hair come out like? I've never gotten this done before! I sat with foils floating around my head looking like a new character on X-men. Janet brought me a cup of cold lemon water and a little cup of candies. That was so nice. They even have a backyard area that you can sit in while you wait for your color to set. How cute! The girl that washed my hair was also a doll and I wish i got her name. She asked me multiple times if I was okay, the water temp, the brushing out of my teased hair, etc. Once my hair was getting blown out, the curiosity was killing me. I couldn't see until it was completely done. As Janet turned my chair around I gasped. I love it! "You look like a movie star," she said, lol. I felt like one. My review has been long overdue!! I've had the biggest urge to try something new with my hair and been putting it off because I haven't dyed my hair in 5 year and I was scared something would go wrong. So anyways I decided to take the plunge and go for the popular ombre look, finding the salon was a challenge. After much research, looking at places in nyc and queens, I found the Space Salon; thanks to the reviews of course! The same day I booked an appointment, I went in with a friend of mine. I've been to several salons, and to this day, not one honestly comes close to the incredible service I received at this salon. The place was clean, chill, and everyone was very friendly. Catherine did my ombre hair, and seriously guys, she knows what she's doing. She listened to me and recommend a perfect shade of blonde for my hair, she was very attentive to the coloring process like the foils and toning and such. I also went with a cut and blow-dry as well and no joke, the whole process took no more than an hour. I took a chance on this place and I'm glad I did!! It's been a little over a month now and I'm still getting compliments on my hair :) I highly recommend this place!!! read more

I have been there 2 times in the last year and a half and every time I actually tried their services was because my boyfriend will get me a gift certificate from Space salon. He didn't know this place is not worth his money.... until my last hair cut there. First time came in and had an appointment with Adella for color and cut. The cut was good, the color was bad. I wanted strawberry blonde hair and I ended up with dark red hair and color with no dimension. I let it pass that time due to my inexperience with dying my own hair and because it was an expensive gift from my boyfriend. Last April I had to cut my hair again and my boyfriend went there and bought a gift certificate for me again without me knowing for about $230.00 so I could get pampered. I decided to give it a second try and I'm still regretting it. My appointment was with Sandy on a busy weekend so she cut my hair in a rush and then she started my balyage but never finished it herself. Someone else put the color on me and made sure my hair was washed. That's all. My stylist had a second appointment so she started cutting someone else's hair while I was left with no supervision. My hair is chopped in the back so terribly that I had to go to other salons to fix it 2 times already in the last month. My mom haven't seen me in more than a year and have me a gift certificate for a hair salon thinking that I cut it myself and that is why it looks so bad ! And incredible but that service was around $230.00. Never went back to complain but I should have. My balyage lasted 2 washes. read more

I have been getting my hair over 10 years and I never really get what I want or am I happy how my hair color turns out the first time. Just recently I had my hair black and I went to Space Salon to dye my hair ashy blonde. I had Bianca who is amazing and very nice. She explained to me the whole process to get what I want and what needs to be done in order not damage my hair. As I was waiting I was so nervous and scared to see the results. But once I was finished I was in love, she absolutely listened to what I wanted and I came out looking fabulous. I can say now that will never go to anyone else but Bianca. I'll start with the fact that I am super particular when it comes to my hair. It's curly and I have a lot of it. Not many people know how to manage with it. I decided to make an appointment here with my girl Bianca. The ambiance of the salon is really nice and clean. Everyone was very friendly and I was received with open arms. I showed Bianca a picture of the color I wanted and explained how much I wanted it cut. She talked me through every process and made sure I was okay with all the steps. When I get my hair done, I know it'll be an all day affair. I got my hair dyed red (my natural hair color is dark brown so it was a process to get it red) and got a cut, blow dry, and flat iron. I asked a couple salons around Astoria and I felt no one really understand what I Wanted in terms of style & color but most important overall long term looks in the way it grew out. Other stylists just seemed uninterested. Then I went to Space & was paired up with Bianca. First I loved her demeanor and the way she spoke. Very professional and stylish. I explained what I wanted and and she instantly understood and explained how she would do it. I also found out she was trained at Aveda so her hair knowledge was on point. I was SO EFFIN HAPPY with it. I will tell you MONTHS later my hair has Grown out and still looks so amazing. The color and style is perfect and still is. Ok I'm comparing this salon to the salon I normally go to & that's the only reason why I'm taking away 1 star. I woke up & just decided to get my hair done. I went to my salon and they were booked for the day so I remembered my friend went to this salon to get her hair done. Went all the way to Astoria for this. Catharine did an ombré on my hair. She did a beautiful job!!!! She covered my hair with bleach and put me under the dryer and kept checking on me every 10mins. It was a long process bc I had jet black hair & my hair is very hard to lighten. She got my black hair to blend perfectly with the sandy blonde ends I wanted. Then she did a blow out on me which was okay. I normally don't like my hair blown out but I just did it to see the color better. But I highly recommend this place & Catherine if you want to get an ombré done. The place is cute, clean, & comfortable. Oh it's also cheaper compared to other salons I been too. It's funny how I have family that live right around the corner from the salon & I have passed by it maybe 10 times. Just never thought it was a salon bc I only noticed the jewelry on the window. Absolutely loved getting my haircut here! It was my first time at this salon and my stylist, Rudi, did and amazing job--she made my hair look better than it ever has. I got a normal cut and dry. My hair is usually long, straight, and flat, but she was able to give it some great movement and volume. And in no time at all--I was in and out in under an hour. I got my mom an appointment at this hair salon while she was visiting me a few weeks ago. She was here last year and she liked the salon at that time. It seems they favor locals and if someone's visiting from out of town they don't care how well they do, which isn't fair to the customer. My mom's stylist was Ruby and while my mom was 10 minutes early to her appointment however someone else came in and the stylist decided to touch up the other lady's roots real quick. After my mom waited 40minutes, the stylist didn't know how to color hair, she left the foils on the longest in the front and at the roots, while my mom has thin and breakable hair. Also she was giving her mixed messages on how to style her hair, she said minimize how much heat you use because you have thin hair, but once realizing it's my mom's birthday that day decided to curl the front any way. I have been to this salon for myself and they are definitely very European and laissez faire about the order of clients, they definitely play favorites. I had a different stylist when I went in January(?) and she was nice, I don't remember her name but I can update with that information later. I'm not as picky as my mom and I don't color my hair and I don't mind waiting a little as long as it's reasonable. My hair cut was nice and the stylist listened to what I wanted. TL;DR it's a coin toss, depends on who your stylist is. Overall, if you don't care about waiting or if you're local they'll do a decent to good job, depending on how picky you are.
