What a great experience! I appreciate that they accommodated me at the last minute on a weekend. Maura was warm and engaging but still professional and focused on the job. So glad to have this place a few blocks from my apartment. I have to say I've been to a handful of local salons since I moved to Queens in 2008 and I have generally had good experiences, but this was the first place where I can say that I was able to get exactly what I want done to my hair. Now I know that sounds very diva-ish, let me explain. I have super thin, fine wavy hair, and it only works with a handful of short styles. At this point, I know what those styles are, I keep pictures in my phone and I'm very good at communicating this to stylists. Any time someone tries to get too creative I just wind up with flat greasy hair. Maura gave me exactly what I wanted. Walked in, no appointment and was met promptly by one of the stylist. I liked how the same person who washed my hair also cut my hair- she was thorough but I wasn't there long. Honestly, one of the best places I've been too and it's the best price! Gigi Salon is great but very expensive and not worth the 2 hour aggregation sitting in the chair. I had a lot of split ends and to be honest, I avoid getting my hair cut because I lack the patience to sit in a chair for too long, to be unhappy with the cut, and to have to make awkward small talk when I'm exhausted. I've been coming to Vanessa for three years, first for a magenta ombre, then a rose gold ombre and now a honey blonde ombre. She is so skillful and careful with her clients, really taking the time to perfect the smooth transitions in her ombre and balayage application. She's honest when you ask about particular looks, the longevity of a color and other helpful things to know when coloring hair. She just opened up her own salon in November and the decor is absolutely adorable, with the pastel pink textured walls and the chic and classic chandeliers. I really wish I didn't give this place 2 stars, but hear me out: this is a local and small mother/daughter-owned salon in my neighborhood. I live around the block basically and was in desperate need of a trim. (My ends were crying for help and by help, I mean chomping them offfffff.) I couldn't stand stepping into 2020 with them, hence I decided to book a very, very, VERY last minute appointment with something super accommodating, local / close. So I did just that and had no issue booking the appointment right through Yelp, right away. I was informed the owner wasn't available on that day (also the one who has gotten reviews on here). Long story short (I'm not a hair snob, by the way) I wasn't happy with my cut. The stylist (the mother in the mother/daughter combo) was very short and inattentive. I had told her I just wanted a trim, but she ended up doing what most stylists do when they get their hands on a pair of scissors--snip snip and SNIP away just way too much! As a bonafide curly girl, I am now in need of recapturing my curl pattern (since a bad cut can totally mess with it and F it up.) I should have known better - not to book last minute in a small salon. I'm currently also dealing with the DevaCurl scandal, so overall, my faith in the hair industry will probably take longer than ever to be somewhat restored! To all others looking to book here - just know if you're a curly girl like me and you're looking to preserve that, it's probably not a good option for you. I've struggled finding the perfect stylist who can deal with thick dark Asian hair and Vanessa, the owner made it all seem like a breeze. I'm very disappointed and upset for how they left my hair. I was recommended to come here to get my hair done recently. By the end of the day, my hair was falling off from the bleaching. I was there for 13 hours, and still pay her $650 for my hair to get ruined. I couldn't have done this at home. Not only that, I left the hair salon with very choppy and uneven haircut to fix the damage bleached hair. I don't recommend coming here for my experience I had.
