Round the corner and to the back is the pool table room where I've enjoyed beating my good friend on many occasions. They have seating to the front and in a small garden to the back, plus a small car park. It's a nice tidy pub, with friendly staff and fairly good beer. Don't remember it ever going quiet when I, a stranger, walked in.

The area outside, at the immediate rear, has been decked and covered over and the car park has been improved immensly. There is a childrens play area and it is very evident that this is a family friendly pub. The food is from a well balanced, unpretentious and reasonably priced menu and is always spot on. It's hard to resist a delicious beef baguette with gravy and real chunky home made chips! As well as providing a great place to drink and eat, The Flying Ferret is making a difference in Shelley as a place to meet and is doing great fund raising for various local charities. We had 7 different main courses between us- turkey, veggie lasagne, salmon , hake, pheasant, steak and the famous meat pie (it is huge!). The chips were highly praised and lovely to see roast beetroot as a veg option. We were given a comp pre -starter of thai fishcakes and olives with olive bread. The setting couldn't be more picturesque in the middle of the countryside yet 15 mins from a bustling town. Gorgeous old pub that still looks like a traditional pub, truly a gem, the freshest seafood including Whitby crab, a truly remarkable "real" shepherds pie made with braised shoulder of lamb and wonderful home made deserts. Service was friendly and attentive and prices were reasonable. I don't get it, this place should be on everyones list to visit at least a couple of times a month, i'm guessing their Sunday roasts would be off the charts good. I'd certainly head back.
