On the few occasions I've been in I've found it extremely hostile, one always gets the feeling a fight is going to brake out. 'Locals' don't really welcome 'new' people in there and don't seem to like them playing pool in peace. The beers range is reasonable and the prices are also reasonable. They have discos on nearly every weekend. Most people in Stocksbridge seem to wonder why it's named the Friendship due to the hostility of the punters. it quite frequently gets it windows put through or dealt some other act of vandalism for some reason or another. If you're after a more welcoming pub in Stocksbridge I'd say stay clear of the Friendship and head down to the Silverfox.

Followed by the mains of, Fish cake with selection of vegetables, this fish cake was deep fried and was ineadible, carrots over cooked, swede cubes and new potatoes, and off the specials board brandy braised steak. This was described on the board as 'To Die For' it was dry, over cooked, had no flavour and had no brandy in the sauce whatsoever, set on a bed of mash. We did however have a great bottle of red which we enjoyed. When we mentioned this to the waitress (who was efficient) we were told it was the chefs first day...Should be his last as well. It was such a dissapointment, we have loved the food and atmosphere here so many time before, but on a Sat Night to only have 14 people in the whole place speaks volumes, or maybe it was REM coming out of the sound system that was putting people off, definantly not the right backround music for 'fine dining' as much as I like REM.... Avoid this place like the plague, until they get there act together.

The on-line booking system was user friendly and a confirmation message was sent to me within moments. This was a great feature as I'm a born worrier and wanted this to be the perfect surprise. The meal was excellent as was the service which was provided by helpful, friendly staff for whom nothing was too much trouble. However the buffet food was absolutely vile. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. At £6.50 a head to eat as much as you like you can find much better in Hillsborough. I felt I had wasted my money and felt ill for the rest of the evening and the next day. I'm very rarely one to ever complain about food but this was bad. The only good thing about it was the soup for starters and I wished I'd just had about 6 bowls of that instead of any of the main courses. As soon as we finished we left and we won't be back again.
