I used to work in a pub nearby, back in the good old days where Wakefield was a haven of students and locals alike due to the Arts Campus of Bretton Hall (sadly no longer a part of the Uni). The pub my friends and I worked at was at O'Donoghue's - about ten minutes walk from Boons. Our usual practice was to finish up at the standard time of 11.30pm and then head over for last orders here. There's a fairly decent pool table, at least it was back then, which I've noticed that not many of my usual pubs in Leeds have. Being quite keen on a good game of pool this was always a bonus to while away the time over a nice pint. As far as I remember they served a standard range of lagers, beers, mixers and soft drinks but it was more the environment and later opening times that we used to come here for than specialist beers. They also used to hold regular live music, and in Wakefield the music is awesome. There is a plethora of fabulous blues bands, solo artists, acoustic musicians, Irish players and others to go and see and a number of them used to play here. My first ever live performance was in this very pub, amongst all my Uni friends on our last night out before moving to Leeds, and so I obviously look back fondly on this place! The staff were always lovely, the pub itself is a stone's throw away from the station and it's large enough to accommodate a group of folk. All in all, this is a grand old pub full of good cheer and a warm welcome.

Whilst it has a number of different area`s within the pub it is the main entrance that everyone gathers in. Getting to the bar on a weekend night can be a mission in itself and when you do get there it is another mission getting back to your place without spilling a drink or two. It's a classic real ale pub with a firm live music policy, and although the seating is extremely modest, that doesn't stop folk from packing in here on a Wednesday or Friday night to sink a few pints and soak in the sounds. The staff have always been fantastic and the drinks were alway reasonably cheap. They've a small array of outside seating and being located so close to the train station it's an ideal spot for those hoping to indulge in a few before catching the last train back to Leeds, as I always was, or those looking for a decent pint after stepping off the train. Although the pub isn't managed by the same folk as when I used to frequent here, it seems like it's still a prime spot for those after a more low-key and friendly atmosphere. There's not much else to it, except great pints and fabulous music. I'm surely biased as I've always had such a great time here, but I doubt it can have changed that much over the years. Watch out for Peculiar Blue, Dr Blue and The Welsh T Band amongst other solid local favourites!

They have a good selection of ales on, I had the strongest one they had on tap the other week and if I recall it was only about £3, the rest were cheaper than that so pretty decent prices. Walked in last week, her back turned instantly to induldge in a converstaion, so indulged she couldnt even stop the conversation while pulling my pint. Not a smile from her in sight, was asked what I wanted in such a plain dull voice, it was as so she did not want to be there. As soon as my pint was pulled, she was quickly back to talking or sat on her phone. I also heard her talking about what was quite clearly other customers, as i sat unfortunately close to her. Really off putting, would not return again. As much as it looks beautiful, she really brings the whole place, mood and spark down. She was not welcoming what so ever and made you feel very un-wanted. Would definitely recommend a change of barstaff. Coincidentally, I work for a local newspapers and online agency rating local pubs, although I will state how beautifully presented it is, I unfortunately will have to write about the awful treatment from the above bar staff. To be honest, I was not impressed. This was largely down to the service - the barmaid served my two friends, then headed to the back of the bar to answer her mobile phone and completely ignored me! The bar itself was dead, although it was a Wednesday night, so it could be a lot busier at the weekends. I did like the decor - comfy leather sofas and modern styling. I would try it again, but wouldn't recommend it.
