VOLUNTEER ROLLING CHECK-IN Usually when I take Southwest to Las Vegas I check-in my luggage for convenience. This afternoon I took Flight 818 to Las Vegas. Since Southwest charges $45 for check-in luggage I decided to have my rolling luggage as a carry-on. An announcement by one the Southwest flight agents at Gate 30 said that Flight 818 is fully booked and there will be limited bin space overhead. He asked for 14 volunteers with rolling luggage who wanted to check-in at no charge. I volunteered. So I ended up saving $45 to not check-in and volunteered to have my roller luggage check-in for free. read more

I flew out of here after visiting Northern California and it was pretty smooth, although it was 4:30am. Checking a bag was a breeze in the priority lane, and the regular line wasn't super long, but there were people even at that hour. Boarding was also smooth with the numbered zones and assigned seating. The Oakland gate areas are super small thought with a limited amount of seating. I'd imagine on a busy travel day, working your way to your gate could be an issue. It's probably the least appealing gate area of any Southwest terminal I've been in. Flight 3546 on 5/25/26 heading to Long Beach, my assigned seat was 26c, we had a 90% full flight. My row was full. There was the nicest flight attendant, Jessica. She offered me to sit on the last row to be comfortable. She didn't have to offer this kindness. I noticed a lady having trouble finding room for her carry-on, after she literally moved luggage around space was made. During beverage service, I requested cranberry juice, no ice, i got a whole can. Jessica's customer service is going to keep me coming back to Southwest. I overheard her mentioning how she loves her job! That's truly the difference between her customer service and someone the merely does it for the paycheck. He's pushing wheelchairs for SouthWestAirlines and he seemed to have a reputation that proceeded in everybody we met at oh you got Chetty. He was kind and polite, hopeful, generous, and overwhelmingly friendly. We loved that experience from him that shows true professionalism in his job. My first flight was delayed by two hours which meant I'd miss my connecting flight to Oakland. Note to self. Always fly direct if possible. What happened next just blew me away and made me a Southwest customer for life. * At the Customer Service station in Vegas, the kind Southwest lady booked me on the next direct flight to Oakland at no additional charge. * My baggage didn't make the direct flight to Oakland but the super nice Customer Service lady at Oakland Airport (shout out to Jamina) processed my baggage report and made sure I was alerted when my bag arrived on the next flight which was in about an hour. * Southwest gave me a $150 credit for my troubles. * Southwest refunded my $35 baggage charge. I love SWA, but lately their flights been a few hours delayed granted it's due to nature or Air traffic control that limits the incoming/outgoing plane. Southwest once was that unique budget airline that cared for customers, did things differently, and inspired customer loyalty. Those days are gone as they strip away all that made them unique. Expect to be price gouged. Goodbye checked bags-They wanted $70 dollars for two small bags. (We're seniors). Once at the gate attendants begged 40 of us to check the same bags they vocally denied 10 minutes earlier. (Both our outbound and return flight!) Their unique boarding is scrapped in favor of tiers to allow more gouging. Don't want a middle seat? Want a front row? Expect to pay more. We have been loyal to Southwest for years but no more. I've flown in and out of OAK and SFO with southwest airlines dozens of times. My last experience with southwest and Oakland Airport on December 20th pissed me off so bad. I fly almost every winter holiday season, so I was aware of the holiday rush. However, I've never seen the bag drop off counter nor the tsa area so poorly run before. At one point, there were hundreds of people in line. The line snaked out of the airport and onto the sidewalk. While waiting in line, I heard one exasperated traveler say, "There are only two counter agents!" I left my partner in line to check and she was indeed correct. Later on I believe there were maybe 3 counter agents which is not nearly enough for the holiday rush. This left at least 4+ counters empty during one of the busiest holiday travel weeks?! They couldn't find staff to man the counters? Or they don't pay them enough? Do they not offer bonuses? Was everyone out sick? What a poorly run company. After we went through that hellish experience of slowing snaking through the line, we got to the tsa line which is usually not a problem. They had two tsa people checking IDs for the regular line. Two?! At one point they went down to only one TSA person checking IDs. Then when they had two people, the other person was preoccupied with the desperate people who had just signed up for the Clear program to skip the horrible line. What is our $5.60 per ticket fee paying for? This whole experience was awful. It makes me think twice about flying with southwest ever again, especially out of Oakland Airport. read more

I have been a loyal Southwest customer for many years. For the past two years, I have earned Companion Pass through frequent travel, not through a promotion or credit card offer, but through a significant number of flights. I fly nearly every week, and despite all those years of travel with Southwest, this is the first time I have felt compelled to write a complaint. On today's flight, I boarded with other A-List Preferred passengers and took my seat in 12D. A flight attendant stationed near the middle of the aircraft, a middle-aged woman with sandy-blonde hair, immediately seemed to single me out. She first commented that my roller bag needed to be standing upright on its edge. She then removed my backpack from the overhead bin and told me I needed to wait until all passengers' larger carry-on bags had been placed in the bins before I could put my backpack overhead. I have no issue following Southwest's policies. My concern is that this policy was not applied consistently. After my backpack was removed, I watched multiple other passengers place backpacks in the overhead bins alongside their larger carry-on bags without being stopped or asked to remove them. The flight was also not full, and there was ample overhead bin space. What was upsetting was not the rule itself. It was being singled out and held to a different standard than the passengers around me. When I told the flight attendant that I did not want to engage further, rather than allowing the interaction to end, she continued arguing with me and informed me that she was also an A-List Preferred customer. I am still unclear why she felt that was relevant to the situation or appropriate to bring into the conversation. I travel frequently enough to understand that flight crews have difficult jobs and that policies need to be enforced. I also understand that not every interaction will be perfect. But there is a meaningful difference between enforcing a policy and selectively enforcing it against one passenger while allowing others to do the same thing. After many years and hundreds of flights with Southwest, I have never before written a complaint. That should convey how strongly this interaction affected me. It is remarkable how quickly one experience can damage the goodwill built over a decades-long relationship with an airline. More than anything, it felt horrible to be singled out in front of other passengers. The experience did not reflect the level of respect, consistency, and hospitality I have come to expect from Southwest. Southwest never provided a response explaining how this type of selective treatment aligns with Southwest's standards for customer service and conduct. read more

Have you flown Southwest Airlines recently - talk about nickel & diming you every which direction. So I had booked the flight, a few months ago. Nowhere did it state you now have to pay to check your luggage - wouldn't an airline prefer that you check the luggage versus not; so be prepared to PAY EXTRA $35.00 for your luggage. So then some folks opted not paying, so they carry it on, so while you're waiting to board folks are being asked to check their luggage at no cost, given they have run out of luggage space aboard the plane. You now pay for picking your seat as well. It's turning into one of those airlines that one avoids due to all the hidden fees that smack you in the face when you're checking in for your flight. So remember folks there are what 3 other airlines out there, maybe a few smaller airlines, so pick wisely. The staff was fine. Truly this is new ownership trying to take the dedicated Southwest patrons for granted. Time to switch I guess. read more

PHILLIP BARBOUR - RUDE & AGGRESSIVE SOUTHWEST FLIGHT ATTENDANT While preparing for take off PHIL was extremely rude and un professional. Humiliated my wife. Had her in tears. Tried to embarrass me, over nothing. I was patiently waiting in my seat, eyes closed, head phones on, music playing. Phil wanted to make an example of us. He started to berate and belittle my wife in front of the entire cabin. (Because we didn't hear his instructions). He said: "YOUR HUSBAND NEEDS TO SIT IN THE BACK NOW" "ITS YOUR FAULT" "YOU HAD TIME TO WAKE HIM UP" "go now" "no he needs to go" "you had your chance". It was shocking and embarrassing. To be woken up. Abruptly told to move to the back because you didn't hear him. Watch your wife be scolded by him. Afraid to defend your self because it's obvious he will just use this as an excuse to kick you off the plane. When I confronted Phillip Barbour (when we landed) about his behavior. His only response was "ITS NOT MY PROBLEM YOU COULDN'T HEAR ME". When intellectually and emotionally deficiant people are given the slightest bit of authority they don't know how to properly use it. I do love Southwest but disappointed with the seat assignments I was flying from Oakland to Vegas plane was not full and I love when you can have a seat with know one next to you. Because of the seat assignments three of us sitting next to each other when in front of me and next to the aisle no one were in those seats when we had taken off. I find that so annoying. I've flown Southwest for years. This was my first trip requiring chair assistance for my mother. We arrived early. Thanks TSA for excusing Ma. OAK assistance was great. The young man handled Ma w/care. The only thing I didn't care for was the gate-waiting area for those in wheel chairs. There was an elder already there. She was by herself. The regular seats were a few feet away. I didn't care to have that much space between us. I did notice the efficiency it afforded when it came time to board. I just wish there was room enough for them not to be alone & isolated. Aside from that, the staff and flight were great. It was my first time flying with Southwest Airlines. My first flight was delayed an hour from SFO to Las Vegas. Delays suck and unfortunately Southwest seems to have a lot of delays. On my return flight it was also delayed for an hour or more, but one positive is that I was able to reschedule to an earlier flight the same day that was on time. That is the one huge plus is the flexibility to change flights with southwest. Overall for a 1 1/2 hour flight, this airlines is good enough. Not good, not bad, just ok. read more

We arrived on time to the OAK airport 10/17/25 and at the gate it already said flight to San Diego leaving at 3:55 pm was delayed 50 minutes. We ended up leaving 5:15 pm already late arriving in San Diego. Arriving in San Diego was an additional 15 minute delay due to backup at our terminal. We missed our connecting flight leaving 6:45 pm to Dallas Love field and no other flights to Dallas were available that night. Consequently. we had to find a hotel at last minute and booked early flight Sat 10/18/25. Southwest offered nothing to compensate us just a paper with a QR code to follow up. When asked for a hotel voucher, was told not covered since ATC (Air Traffic Controller) issue. When I checked if any ATC issues in Oakland on Fri 10/17/25 there were none. This was clearly a Southwest issue with their flights. We missed a Grandson's college football Sat 10/18/25 game the reason we were traveling to get to Dallas Fri night. Coming back home Dallas Love field to OAK 10/20/25 leaving 6:40 pm there was a Southwest 22 minute delay before departure. read more

It's the @Light_skin_dragon coming to you live from 2 weeks ago. I had thoughts of suicide and been feeling very depressed. So my family that isn't blood helped me book a ticket to see them. I really needed to get away from Los Angeles but even deeper get away from my life. South west is in terminal 1. I appreciate that south west allows military members to come in after boarding passaengers A. I was flying out of LAX to Oakland which took a hour and half give or take. And it was open seating which is nice not wanting or seating next to someone on the flight. They give out complimentary pretzels and drink. Make sure to ask for the can if not they will pour it in a cup for you. If the flight is 150 miles or below you won't get it haha the alcohol was only 9bucks which was a good shot I took and chased it down with cranberry juice. Its OST (One Star Tue) two weeks in a row!!!!! I detest SWA!!!!! However, they are the only airline that flies fr my area to OAK. I have no choice. First of all, SWA is not the low price leader. I have paid $500 w/ no extras on a half full flight to fly to OAK before. Thats ridiculous for a one hour flight. Additionally, I can't stand their boarding process. I'm glad they are finally spending some $ on a res system, and are moving to assigned seats w/ options for more legroom in 2025. In addition, SWA has a liberal ass pre-boarding policy, and passengers can save seats. Lastly, there always seems to be that "asshole", who comes on the half empty plane late. That "asshole" has to sit in the middle seat of a front row, and fuk it up for me in the aisle seat and the person in the window seat. However, for OAK specifically: Fr LGB I land in Terminal 1, but have to walk all the way to Terminal 2 for my golf bag. For departures, I have to drop my bag off at Terminal 2 and walk to Terminal 1 to my gate. Terminal 1 has no TSA Pre or Clear line. What kinda fukn customer service is that?!?!?!?!?! In addition, checking a bag is self service. You have to get in line for a kiosk, put your claim tag on, then wait in another line for a SWA rep to weigh your bag and check your ID. Unfortunately, I have to fly SWA to get to OAK. I just have to man up and deal with it. Note to SWA: Customers like options that improve the experience!!!!! read more

My mother recently flew Southwest Air. Even though the aisle seat next to her was open, she was not allowed to move from the middle seat. The stewardess claimed people had to stay in their assigned seat due to weight limits on how the plane was loaded. Southwest used to let you sit anywhere you wanted and the planes did just fine. Rate as 3.5 7/2/23 From Oakland to Burbank, Ca, good flight! Captain is on point, flight attendants are cool as cucumbers & funny, attentive. Just a little bit of turbulence but The Captain handled it like a pro. Flying coach is fair. If you check in early (on time, like as soon as it's exactly on the dot!!) enough, first come first served, you have the pick of your seat. I prefer assigned seating but I like flying with friends (and for some reason, Southwest is the option selected) more. It would be beneficial for people on the go to have options to charge their devices, not on this airplane. Thankfully it's just an hour & half flight. I should've taken advantage of this beverage menu...esp. the complimentary drinks...maybe next time read more

Today's evening flight (second to last of the day) to Orange County is delayed and on the phone waiting for a rep (20 min though quoted 11). This the second time this year I've had issues traveling from OAK to SNA, the last one was cancelled while I was waiting at the airport. Avoid this leg. 1 star for reimbursing my Uber to/from the airport for the cancelled flight. read more

Imagine if you will, it's your first trip to Hawaii, and you've got to connect in Oakland on your way. This was my wife and I's scenario last week. We get off our plane in Oakland and we begin to review the gate location of our connecting flight and discover that a flight to Honolulu is scheduled to depart in less than an hour. Our current itinerary was for us to be at the Oakland Airport for 4.5 hours.... So, I approach the Southwest representatives at the gate (Sherrain and Richard) and ask if there is a way that my wife and I might be able to get onto the flight leaving sooner. Honest to God, the answer was a surprise to us. We were able to get onto the flight. These two Southwest employees went above and beyond to make sure that everything went well. This required them to do a number of things. First, verify that seats were available, cancel our seats on the later flight, book us onto the earlier flight, and then follow a process to attempt to get our luggage on the earlier flight. They emailed the luggage department, and they also phoned the people who are in charge of the luggage department (and I'd include their name here as well if I only knew it) and low and behold, our luggage arrived on the same flight that we did. I had been making plans to return to the airport to get our luggage, as I really did not expect that it would be doable to have a Southwest luggage person track down our three pieces of luggage from a cart (I'm assuming) that was set aside for the flight 4.5 hours away and get it onto the plane leaving in less than an hour.... So, our first trip to Hawaii was getting off to a great start due to the effort and energy of several of the personnel at the Oakland Airport. Thanks so much... It's kind, courteous, and helpful people that really demonstrate the quality customer service that companies can really be proud of, and we got to spend an extra 4.5 hours in Hawaii on our very first visit there. This really helped my wife and I understand that good customer service is alive and well. read more
