It was uncomfortable, bizarre, and nothing like any professional deep tissue massage I've ever had. The experience somehow got worse when it was time to pay. When I asked to use a credit card, the therapist became visibly offended and was incredibly off-putting about it, as though paying with a card was some unreasonable request. The entire experience felt unprofessional from beginning to end. I left wondering what exactly I had just paid for. If you're looking for an actual massage from someone who understands what "deep tissue" means and treats customers professionally, go somewhere else.

I prefer women therapists, I reached out before my massage and asked if Mimi was working, they said no, and asked if another girl would be ok. I said yes and walked over. I told the man who greeted me that I had just texted and he said ok. I didn't even realize the room at the front was a massage room. I thought it was a coat closet. When he opened it, it was so small the table was kitty corner. I'm like whatever and got undressed and under the sheet. Then a few minutes later a man came in, I assumed the girl was finishing up and would take over, but nope he stayed the whole time. The reason I prefer women is because they don't feel they have to prove anything and will massage you and not try to break you. Every time he moved around the table it pushed my neck down and my chin was hitting the hard edge of the table. Elbows on my spine, just digging in uncomfortably hard. When the massage ended I left very sore, and will probably need another massage in a few days to recover.

Unfortunately, the night before, I experienced a sudden allergic reaction, likely due to something I ate at dinner. My face swelled up, and I developed severe eye irritation and drainage. Despite hoping the reaction would subside with medication, I woke up feeling worse and knew I wasn't in any condition to receive -- or enjoy -- a $375 massage. I was aware of SpaTerre's 24-hour cancellation policy and had a friend contact them by both phone and email as soon as it was clear I wouldn't be able to attend. The staff accepted the cancellation but informed us that a refund would not be possible due to the policy. Later, I followed up directly and explained the situation to the manager. I hoped for a spa credit or more flexibility, especially given the medical nature of the cancellation and the fact that I visit Key West regularly. Unfortunately, I was told the most they could offer was a discount on a future service. While I understand the need for cancellation policies, I was disappointed by the lack of flexibility or empathy in this situation. Emergencies happen, and I had hoped for a more compassionate response. For that reason, I'm hesitant to rebook with SpaTerre, even at a discounted rate.

Apparently my mother was off her mat doing a balancing pose and was told, "Are you sweating on my carpet?" and "Sweat on your own mat." My mother got on her mat and mentioned she does better off the mat. Instructor replied, "So? We all do." My mother was humiliated and embarrassed. This was not very yoga-like to command people to stay on their mats. I guess I'd be concerned they are not properly disinfecting/cleaning between classes if instructor feels the need to embarrass students who step off their mats. A great yoga instructor makes a student feel at ease and feel welcome. In this case, Marylee fell short of great.
