I've been living in Reading since December '09 and I have to send props to the Reading bus system…read more As an American, they have made it possible for me to survive here without needing a car. It's that whole "wrong side of the road" thing that messes me up. The buses are frequent, they are clean, and many of the lines run all night. The system is pretty simply laid out, with the various lines arranged like the spokes of a wheel, with the Reading rail station at the hub. The stops throughout the system are located closely enough together that you don't have to walk far to get from one to the next, but they are spread out enough that hte bus doesn't stop too often. They recently adjusted their fare system, where prices are much easier to understand. Two one-way trips are just a touch cheaper than an all day pass. There are also 7 day, 30 day and 90 day passes with graduated prices, but you really have to be riding at least three or four days a week for it to work out in your favor. The people of Reading are fortunate to have it.

The 17 bus route runs 24 hours and is useful if you're a student as that route is close to the university and the student area of Reading. It's a little hassle if you need to get across Reading via two or more routes as the buses don't "sync" so you can find yourself waiting 10 minutes for a connecting bus. But that's the only drawback I have. The buses are clean, arrive regularly and most of the bus stops now have a sign that shows the estimated arrival times which is useful. If you need to travel in Reading a lot, get yourself an all day ticket as it pays for itself after 3 trips.

They are operated by Go-Ahead Group, who are also pretty big in Newcastle and London. Many of the buses look like they've just been driven an hour and a half or so away from London, with the two-door red double deckers, yet some are really old fashioned, to the point where it wouldn't surprise me if they were there when Brighton and Hove Bus Co started operating in 1884, which is the same year Manchester City was formed, who went on to win the Premier League during my time in Brighton. The bus stops were announced, but it just added more confusion, it was just announced once before the stop and there wasn't always a sign to say the stop/direction or when the stop is taking place, so it was rendered useless. I found the drivers to be a little generic and unhelpful, a lack of "stop buttons" anywhere near where I was on the bus was also a problem, it made me feel trapped. Too much inconsistency on bus type along the route which can really affect the customer experience. 2* - Too many issues and too inconsistent but still arguably one of the most reliable bus companies in Brighton because of how powerful they are in the area, and I did like some of their buses, although it seemed fewer nice buses than the old-fashioned ones were on the network, even when travelling within Brighton centre and the Marina.

Not to be confused with Mouth Wets Trains, which are a truly mouthwatering prospect…read more These multicoloured trains are mostly red but also yellow and blue, which makes a really interesting color combination. They basically did everything from London to the southwestern tip and all along the South Coast from Portsmouth and Southampton to the West. This train-chain has the most destinations in this region, although the North Coast of Cornwall and Devon and Somerset were woefully under-represented. But the rest of the region was pretty well attended too, except for the coastline from Weymouth down to Torquay which again was under represented by these services. They were operated by Stagecoach which is why they look like the Stagecoach buses, and are expensive. They took over other little local franchises and were taken over by South Western Railway in 2017. It was part of the privatization of British Rail which basically ruined trains for the whole country. Southwestern at least has more traditional looking trains and colours and operates a much lesser part of the region. So it's kind of sad. The only reason I give it a higher rating is because of the colors.

Destinations include Weymouth, Portsmouth, Exeter St. Davids, Bristol Temple Meads and Reading. They also operate former Underground stock on the Isle of Wight between Ryde Pier Head and Shanklin. I've had the opportunity to ride the line from Reading to Waterloo, which stops at only eleventy billion stations. What is usually a 30 minute journey on the Great Western line to Paddington is an hour and a half on the South West line to Waterloo. I swear, some of these aren't even real stations. They just stop there because they can! But if you need to be at Waterloo, this could be helpful. And the Waterloo to Hampton Court line is useful. It stops at the Wimbledon District Line station on separate platforms. Platforms have an easy to read "next train" board and my experience was that the trains arrived and departed at the scheduled times. The South West trains I've ridden were clean and well kept with a surprisingly low amount of litter or graffiti. On board information screens were quite useful. Helpfully, many South West stations in the London Transport Area (including Wimbledon and Hampton Court) have Oyster Readers. If you're traveling in this area (check first), you might be able to save a huge bunch of £!
