We drove by this unassuming little shop near the house that we were looking at. It seemed to be very popular with lots of people in it and I'm a sucker for shaved ice. The two ladies in the shop were extremely polite and kind, they welcomed us and answered all of our questions. I witnessed them go above and beyond for another customer that needed a sugar-free flavor that wasn't always available. Even though they were packed and very busy, they made the shaved ice promptly and it was absolutely delicious. It was a soft ice and delicious flavor. We will definitely look into renting Local for her birthday parties coming up. read more

As a Tex-pat in Michigan I've been longing for some "proper" snowcones like you find in shacks all over Texas (not the kind you find at fairs in a paper cone that are basically just chunky ice pellets). Which I guess is how this place came to be (started by a fellow former Houstonian apparently). This kind of snowcone is the perfect cold treat for frankly any time of year, and Southern Shaved Ice does it right - it has the proper array of gourmet flavors (including some TX classics like Tigers Blood. What flavor is Tigers Blood? Nobody knows, but it's a state favorite) and the optional but recommended cream topping (which is basically sweetened condensed milk, and it elevates everything). Michigan, this is what you need everywhere. Go to Brighton and have some and you'll see why. read more

My first job was at a shaved ice place in PA to similar to this one, so stopping here brought back all the feels. This is a small, cute shaved ice shop on the outskirts of Brighton. A perfect place to stop on a hot summer day. There are several sizes and flavors to choose from, and the prices are great. The shop was a little busy when I came, and the two girls that were working took and filled orders fast and efficiently. My shaved iced treat was delicious. I totally want to open one of these places. It's such a simple treat and is sooo good! This treat is like a snow cone, but better. They have a huge block of ice and they use a machine that shaves it. This makes it lighter than a snow cone and it seems to hold the flavoring better. I get the small, which is about 8 oz I believe. That is plenty for me because it's packed with delicious sugar. You can have one flavor or mix and match. You can also add cream to it! I stick with 1/2 sour cherry and 1/2 sour grape. Sooooo good! I've tried other flavors like the Bahamas Mama and the Hurricane. Both were good, but I like the kick in the sour stuff. You can add sour spray into the flavors, but I never have. I am going to come here every week and start trying new things. I believe you can add ice cream to cone as well, so I must try that! read more

I first saw this tiny place a few weeks ago as I sped past the junction of Grand River and Door Road. I had no idea what Southern Shaved Ice was - ice sculptures? When I looked again I discovered it was selling snow cones and had to try one the next hot afternoon. I entered this friendly little place to find people perched at the counter sticking on their packed slushees. They recommended the Tigers Blood (cherry, limeade and coconut) and I watched, fascinated as my show cone was crafted (a bit like 2 snow balls being packed on to of each other) and drizzled with flavours. 'It's best just to bite the top off' one of the customers advised. I was worried I'd get brain freeze but did it anyway (yolo!) and it wasn't too brain freezy). At first the ice shavings looked like dessicated coconut but soon semi-melted into a really pleasing slushy. They have a rewards program too so if you get a snow cone habit, it will eventually pay off. I'm glad this place opened up and wish it luck. It's the perfect cool treat to dock for if you are out on Lake Chemung. read more

This place took myself and my kids back to Texas! Ever since we moved back we've been missing the amazing shaved ice. It was fate that I drove past and thought might as well try this. I'm on a new dairy free restriction (not by choice) and I was REALLY craving ice cream and finding a good dairy free option is always a pain! But then I remembered that I saw an article about this new shaved ice place and had to check it out. This place is so cute. It is located between Brighton and Howell in a tiny plaza off of Grand River. If your not familiar with the area, it's at the corner of Hughes and Grand River, by a marina (there's a traffic light right there too). Look for the yellow and red "Enter Only" and "Exit Only" signs. You can only get into the parking lot from Grand River, not the side street. The building looks newly renovated, the outdoor decor is warm and inviting. The man and woman inside were super friendly and gave me a run down of the options. I went with a large ($3) creamy coconut shaved ice and it was delicious! There is a very small seating area inside but I think most people just take their ice home like I did. I tried to wait eat the ice until I got home but it was so good that I finished it in the car (plus it was 90 degrees out...it was so refreshing!). There were so many flavors to choose- blue raspberry, cherry, root beer, piña colada, birthday cake, dill pickle (something for everyone!?) and many more. I can't wait to go back and try other flavors or combos of flavors. (They have a frequent shopper card too!) They also mentioned that they can put ice cream in the shaved ice cup if you want to mix it up. Sounds good but I told them I had to pass on the dairy, the gentleman mentioned that other dairy-free folks try the ice cream "flavor" on the ice instead - next time for sure! If your in the Brighton-Howell area, I would highly recommend checking this place out for a delicious, fair priced, frosty treat! read more

Following the advice of a friend, my family and I made the short trip to Southern Shaved Ice; we were not disappointed. The staff was VERY friendly and the portions very generous.
