I think we found our new breakfast place for when we leave Topsail! It's not much to look at but you can tell that it's locally owned and operated and that's one of our favorite things! (I also really liked the color of the chairs.) Nikki was our waitress and she was an absolute ray of sunshine. She was so pleasant and very good at her job. My husband and I both ordered the two eggs plate that comes with a meat of your choice, potatoes or grits, and a bread. The "hashbrowns" were chopped up tater tots which is just fine by me and the biscuits are HUGE...and tasty. I told my husband that it was seriously the best biscuit I'd had in a very long time. I normally love this place. The food is good, it's a fair price and usually the staff is very nice and good. Today was a total different story. I realize it's a holiday. I didn't mind the 25 minute wait to eat. What I do mind is when your food takes 45 minutes because you've over sat people, the waitress doesn't bother to come over and at least check on us, apologize for the wait or tell us when we sit down that food is taking a little longer than expected. Until I asked about our food after 45 minutes, our waitress said and I quote "I can check on it but there's a lot of tickets up there." She proceeds to come back and say "yup, there's a lot of tickets up there, 5 ahead of you." A little more empathy or explanation from the waitress would have been nice. And even someone everyone knows gets her food, eats , pays and leaves before we even get our food and she was seated after us, makes you wonder. The place was ok not great though. There were a few things that were good. The fried pickles were great and served with homemade ranch. The sweet tea wasn't very sweet but I guess that's to appeal all people who drink tea. I had the buffalo chicken in a wrap and it was alright, it needed some more sauce in it so I just added ranch to it. My husband tried the burger and it was a decent size but he thinks it was a frozen patty. The homemade chips were great and so were the fries. The opening of Southern Roots Grille was highly anticipated by the locals in the area. Grand opening was on Monday, July 23, 2018. I had the privilege to dine their that same week. SRG is located on highway 50 in Holly Ridge, right off of highway 17. There's a large sign off the road, which is hard to miss. Unfortunately, there are no signs above the door, or on the windows, so I kinda just guessed where the entrance was. Once inside, the cashier/host desk is immediately to the right. The open kitchen sits on the left, the main dining room is centered, and a smaller, seperate dining room extends to the right. The table, chairs, and wall decor were great. Nicely done for a small local restaurant. Unfortunately, you get that weird local, small business feel, that's common in the area. It's so hard to explain, but if you're from a large city like I am, you'd understand. They have a nice open kitchen for you to view while you're there. I was sitting at the other side of the restaurant, and can still feel the heat from the kitchen. They definitely need to make the A/C cooler to compensate the open kitchen. One thing I didn't like was the exposed work station next to the kitchen. It needs either a door or a curtain. It was too distracting, and you can see everything in the back, which is unpleasant for any patron. They post their lunch specials daily on Facebook. So when I noticed Country Fried Steak, I knew I had to come in. The two sides I selected were green beans and cole slaw. I asked the server if the cole slaw was homemade, and she said yes. That's the deciding factor in me getting it. The green beans were canned though, you could tell. I ordered a sweet tea for my drink, but it wasn't too sweet. The Country Fried Steak itself was good overall. It was one, very small portion. I was expecting a larger piece. It had a panko-like crust, and was very tender. The tenderness is a big must for me when it comes to CFS. The white gravy was ok, and it was all well seasoned. If I had a choice though, I would go to City Cafe down the street for their Country Fried Steak on Mondays. For the same price as SRG, you get TWO portions of steak, both larger, and more tasty! Anyways, the server asked me if I wanted a roll with my meal, and I responded with a "Yes, please." Now hold on to your seat...the so-called roll I got ended up being......A GRILLED HOT DOG BUN!! WTF!! That was the most shocking, almost disturbing, thing that I had experienced there. A hot dog bun, really?!! SMH. Overall, my experience at Southern Roots Grille was good. It wasn't great, and it wasn't horrible, but a little above average. If I could rate a 3.5, that's what I would give it. It's hard to rate it a 3 star, because I would never eat at a restaurant that had a Yelp 3 star rating. So I'm bumping them to 4 stars. Opening of new restaurants are tough. It usually takes a minimum of 3 months for restaurants to settle in and work all the kinks out. To their credit, everything seemed to run well for being open only 3 days! I will definitely come back. I'm interested in trying their other daily specials, such as, baked spaghetti, lasagna, meatloaf, sausage & rice, cabbage & sausage, pot roast, and stuffed peppers. I can't wait!! Pros: - They have Wi-Fi!! - Nice decor, tables, and chairs. - Food was good, along with the price. - Spacious, plenty of dining room. Cons: - Hot dog bun served as a roll, SMH! - Open area to the back-of-the-house, exposing the work area. Needs a door or curtain. - A/C needs to be turned up more, to compensate for the open kitchen. - Serving portion needs to be a little larger, to compete with City Cafe and Riverview Cafe. read more

This was not our first visit, so we knew where to go for a great breakfast! There was a short wait, maybe 15 - 20 minutes, which I thought was not bad for a good restaurant. And I honestly think the lack of staff, like everywhere else, was part of the reason for that wait. I had pancakes and sausage and it was so delicious. Wasn't expecting the kitchen to use the end pieces of the bread for the sandwich, but it was fine-just usually don't see that presented on a plate. ‍ The hash browns are actually tater tots smashed and fried, which really produces a good crispy product. All in all, the food was tasty, the wait staff friendly, and while other reviews mention the warm temp of the restaurant, I didn't encounter that at all. Went in for a late breakfast this morning (around 11:30). Had to wait a while to get in the door. It was hot inside the dining room, inadequate AC in the South.
