Our staff assistant helped pick out vanity lights that worked well with our cottage theme. One of the lanterns came Broken. We didn't install it until 3 months after purchase when we opened the box and noticed this. Got a new lantern replaced without charge. My designer and I worked with Randy Allan at Southern Lights to pick out light fixtures and fans for almost every room in my house. The order was extensive with lots of details. My designer is in Minnesota and I live in Florida. All the lighting was shipped altogether and arrived all on the same day in perfect condition, including all the light bulbs for every fixture. Randy's patience, expertise and attention to detail is so appreciated. And he was fun to work with too! What a lovely human being. and truly isn't that what life is about, sharing the "light" of your heart with others no matter where you are and whatever the experience? I was mesmerized and my neck got a crimp from looking at all the lighting options in this 26,000 or so square foot store. I think the lowest price I saw was $18 and the highest $6,000 something with many lights in my price category, about $100-300 for a light over my dining room table. I was greeted by Randy and he was super sweet to banter with. He offered me a water and a coffee and when I got a little dazed by him pointing in the general direction, he walked me to the fridge. Other employees greeted me as I wandered about and a few people were there with their designers. There was every category of light I could possibly think of for every size house I could imagine. I was also told there were more options in catalogs to browse. If you can't find a light you like here you are not trying very hard! read more

I think I have driven by this place 100 times or more. I always wanted to stop but never got around to it. This time I was doing some home projects that needed lighting, I decided to stop and I am glad I did. They have a Huge selection from vintage to modern and also some custom pieces. We even bought a huge decorative wall mirror. I am not sue if the prices are high or in line. We enjoyed our purchases and we will come back again. It is even fun to walk through to make a wish list or get some ideas. I took many pictures to show the quantity and variety they have. This is a lighting disney world. I was just in one section and going nuts. My contractor made the appointment with Julie Thompson the consultant. That is the best way to go. I'm not sure if now you have to make appointments almost everywhere so call first. We went to a section near the lobby. We bought porch lights. So much involved in choosing lights. We picked out as old style as we could and went with 2 shades of glass. I'll be spending 99% of my time on the porch when it's done. We were seated near a light tree that was gorgeous. There are many mirrors throughout the store too. This is my new lighting store. read more

We remodeled our kitchen a few years ago. When I designed our new kitchen one of the items I wanted was under cabinet lighting. I went to every big box and light store in the metro area. I just could not find what I was looking for. (Said Bono). Either the lights were too bulky or didn't fit my measurements. I could have strung a couple of sets together to run the length of my cabinets but then that would not have looked clean. That is when I found Southern Lights. They say the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. Well have you driven south in the evening and see Southern Lights? We worked with Megan who was FANTASTIC! She educated us about the exact set up lights I was looking for. They have LED tape lights that you can actually cut to a custom length. Perfect! Those lights are bright enough to light up my kitchen yet are dimmable too. Megan also showed us some new electrical covers that are not your standard switches. We absolutely love these lights! We've been down to visit Southern Lights a few times over the years and most recently to check out their big tent sale. They have a huge tent sale in the Spring and in the Fall with lots of great deals. I would say if you can't find a light at Southern Lights, then it is just not available. My husband and I are building a new house, we wanted ideas and were hoping to find exactly what we were looking for - a unique, modern, sleek look for our new home. However, we were more than halfway around your store before we were greeted or offered help. Now I realize you were busy - but we saw others come after us that were offered help and we had one gentleman approach us the whole time we were in your store and gave us short answers and was basically, "good luck on your search, we're probably out of your price range." Ouch. Rude. I saw others being helped and your customer service/salespeople looked very happy to be helping others and were very attentive to their needs. The main difference I saw - the way we were dressed. I had a sweatshirt and stocking cap on and my husband had a work coat and stocking cap. Not our best attire, but comfortable and relaxing and the way we chose to go out that day. I had never expected to be judged so harshly and given little to no customer service over the way we looked. My husband fell in love with pieces and ideas from your store - but we left with nothing more than pictures and ideas to find elsewhere. My husband is easily swayed by good people - good customer service. You lost out on potentially thousands on Saturday because we were shown no respect or attention. I do have to give a shout out to whoever was at the "front desk" - before we left my husband asked some questions about a piece hanging in front of her. She had to ask a salesperson questions regarding the piece, yet that salesperson failed to come speak to us directly and she apologized and said, "I will help you the best I can, we are busy today." She spent time looking up lead times and specifications of the piece on her computer. We were very impressed with her customer service skills - too bad the rest of your sales staff didn't have the same drive as her. read more

Great selection, pricing seems above average. I wasn't blown away with the service, actually, the only time anyone talked to us was when we were ready to purchase. No one asked how they can help, inquiring what rooms, etc. Also, communication on the back end wasn't great either - I called asking for an ETA on delivery and was told "we'll call you back". I worked with Michelle and she was great, she told me her opinion when I asked and gave me many options. I had several "lighting" requirements when I walked in.... on my own, browsed around for about 20 minutes walking by LOTS of employees, no one bothering to say hello or ask if I needed help. I felt completely out of place and was overwhelmed. Felt like I should be someone with money. I did find one option for one lighting requirement. the floor lamps I was interested in looking at were boring...nothing with color and many looked as though we were back in the 60s....I'm not going back to the 60s...lol. I walked into the store today and saw a lot of great things that would've worked in our three bathroom remodels. Unfortunately having been there over 15 minutes and no one approached me to see if they could answer any questions, proved a bit disappointing, They obviously are not interested in servicing customers as most retailers are. I guess they have all the sales they need. Apparently you need to seek out help in order to get any assistance ex: there were 5 to 6 people sitting at the reception area and there were three customers in the store including myself. The two other customers were being assisted by sales staff, I don't think they were overworked, they were just disinterested in providing customer assistance. I won't be back. Came here with a friend who was looking for bathroom lighting during his bathroom remodel. Since I was working with him on his remodel, I suggested going to Southern Lights since I had never been there either and have seen such a huge selection of lights when we pass by on the highway. We stopped in and there are lights every where, what you'd expect. But when we went searching for vanity/bathroom lighting, their selection was little to none. We walked around a couple times to just make sure we were thorough in finding the bathroom lighting section. And then you'd think someone would ask, "are you looking for something in particular?" but nobody, and I mean NOBODY bothered to ask. So we left and said we'd be better off looking online or going to the local home improvement store. Their service was down the crapper. I wouldn't stop by anytime soon....or ever. read more

Their store front from the road is very impressive and looked like a great place to find what we needed. Does anyone that works here smile? You're in sales for criminy sakes! Or do you assume there are no other light fixture retailers in the Twin Cities? I just wanted to write an order. I was the simplest sale you would have all day. It took 10 minutes of standing at the counter while you sipped water, eye-balled the sales floor and muddled around back and forth in what looked rather unproductive. I was nice to even give them one star. I am in town from NC and drove 30 minutes to come to the store. I was in their showroom for 40 minutes and not one person asked me if I needed assistance. I asked some guy if he could help me or find someone who could and he said he was too busy. He never sent any of the other sales people to come help me. I'm building a new house and would have purchased a lot of light fixtures here. I will never purchase anything here and will advise anyone I know to stay away from southern lighting. read more

I am a designer and have been ordering lights from Southern Lights for years. I work with Scott Good in sales and he is wonderful. Scott replies to emails quickly, handles all of my clients in a professional organized manner, keeps them on budget and also handles any returns effortlessly. I am comfortable enough to send some of my more difficult clients to him knowing that they will be taken care of. I noticed that some people have given Southern Lights a lower score however I find that being organized and making an appointment is the way to go, not dropping in and having a shopping date since Southern Lights are are very busy. If you are looking for a retail experience I would recommend Target or another retail shop, but if you are doing a large remodel make an appointment and they will take care of you. Another great bonus to SL is that they now have online shopping and its wonderful to have the online experience with a real person backing you up. Lighting is tricky so finding good customer service is a rarity. I highly recommend this business as well as Scott Good for wonderful customer service, great product selection, easy parking and happy customer experience. read more

I spotted an over-the-vanity bathroom light fixture that I really liked. Turned out it was the only one (no stock) so they offered the display model. I said OK. Then they had someone remove it and stick it in a bag. When handing it to me they said "we gave you 3 new light bulbs". I thought "that's generous". When I got it home I looked on the back of the fixture and saw that there were burn marks coming from the wiring hole. My electrician went to install it and found that there was a previously repaired wiring issue (incorrectly spliced wire with tape). He had to rewire it to get it to work. Then, the light cover was bent and wouldn't slide into the tracks. That had to be screwed into place to secure. I'm preparing to go have a chat with these folks to ask them "what were you thinking selling this damaged fixture for this price?" Stay tuned for update. Chrys in Mpls read more

My family and I drove out to Southern Lights last Saturday with the hope of finding a dining room light fixture. We walked around the store for 35 minutes without one sales person so much as acknowledging us. I tried to make eye contact with several associates but they just walked by. Since this was a 40 minutes drive for us, I decided to ask someone at their desk for assistance. Upon approaching the desk I found one associate that looked like he could help me however, he appeared to be in a deep conversation with a "buddy customer" on the other side of the desk, catching up. I stood there, with my toddler in a stroller, attempting to make eye contact with him so he could see that I needed some assistance. At no time did this guy even acknowledge my presence, let me know that he sees me and would be right with me, or attempt to finish up his conversation with his buddy. Only when the buddy's girlfriend came to the desk and signaled that It was time to go did that conversation end. I stood at the desk for almost five minutes without any acknowledgement from this associate or anyone else asking me if I needed help. This associate could not look more annoyed and displeased to be helping me. He actually didn't even greet me. I started the conversation by asking him to follow me to a fixture I had questions on. He never asked any follow up questions to try to get a better sense of what I needed or my budget. I felt like I was bothering him. Not finding what I needed in their showroom, I asked if he had anything in their catalogs that would fit my criteria. He went back to his desk and found one catalog fixture for me to look at. When I asked him how much that fixture was, in the most annoying tone of voice, he grunted "UH, let me check". At that point I felt like no amount of amazing light fixtures was enough for me to spend my money here. I hear their commercials on My Talk 107.1 all the time, about how amazing they are, and how much experience their staff has. My experience was pretty awful here. No thank you. read more

When I asked for help I was basically told to go look around.these people could not have been less interested in helping me find what I needed. I had purchased a discount voucher for this store, so I had to purchase something , although ordinarily I would leave with out purchase after such poor customer service. We recently moved into our new home--all light fixtures (inside and out) came from Southern Lights. The selection is incredible, and the prices competitive. I checked, I could have bought most of the lights I purchased on amazon for similar prices. The difference? An extremely knowledgeable staff person who understood my style and helped make the selection process fun. The first two times I met with Becky L. we just shopped--we didn't make any selections. She just had me show her light fixtures I liked or found interesting. When it came time to make final selections she narrowed down the choices for each room. For me, this was so helpful. And she definitely kept me on track. If I picked a fixture that was a little different than other selections she made sure I understood what I was doing--She would say "that's a beautiful fixture--but it's more of a "country" style and most of your other choices have been more modern. I just want to make sure you want to mix the vibe". Sometimes I changed the choice, sometimes I didn't (you like what you like!); but her advice definitely helped deliver a home design I love. We found the customer service to be awesome. Our lights were delivered to our new home (0ver 100 miles away) on the day/time promised. One light came damaged and was promptly replaced. A couple lights bulbs included were the wrong bulb--they were also replaced very quickly. I have since gone back to Southern Lights to make additional purchases from their home décor department. That selection has recently expanded --great new products. I've seen a few bad reviews on Yelp--mostly on customer service. I would suggest making an appointment, particularly if you are interested in purchasing multiple lights. Or, try going a weekday if at all possible, mornings are slowest. The store is very busy, particularly on weekends, mostly with staff working with clients who have made appointments. By all means, go and browse--the store is amazing! You will want to make an appointment and go back! And ask for Becky L.--she was a fantastic consultant. read more

However, recently I went back in and someone actually approached me for assistance and was very pleasant. I told him that this had never happened before. Then a few weeks later I again went back and service was wonderful. I hope they are making a better effort to help the casual customer who isn't doing a whole home and hasn't made an appointment.
