Beacon Hill

For anyone who grew up in Beacon Hill or spent time in this neighborhood, Jefferson can be like a…read moremiddle school or high school reunion. You may run into someone you know from community and there's a nostalgia factor. This centralized gathering hub brings me back to camps and baggy pants and looney tunes shirts, breakdancing, Massive Monkey and free food. Every time I walk by the big hall by the entrance I am engulfed with memories of parties and food. I can smell the lumpia and pancit, barbacoa, Ezell's, Costco pizza, and home made ribs bought from Viet Wa and smoked. The ever lasting smell of Red Apple sides and Delite bakery empanadas and pastries further add to the memories. I remember randomly being invited to a Nigerian celebration and ate fufu balls, fish, and stews. Delicious! I appreciate the multigenerational care at Jefferson. It's a center where no one goes hungry, community looks after one another, and preschoolers to the ARC programs are supported. Yesler is a close second in Seattle for CC and Chinatown is third. Each has a special place in my heart and I appreciate everyone at Parks.

I primarily use for Toy Gym which is full of different types of vehicles (and once, a soccer ball.) It can be very popular - lots of kids on windy/rainy days. It's nice that the outside park is right there so you can switch gears depending on the weather. Sometimes the kids are rambunctious, that's no fault of Tot Gym but just an FYI.

Rainier Beach

Note: this review and rating is from a volunteer's perspective from fall 2010…read more I volunteered at this food bank for several weeks. It takes a few tries before really learning the ropes of this place, because the system is so disorganized. There are particular stations (ex. drinks, desserts, poultry, grains, canned goods, etc) that majority of the volunteers covered, and basically clients got in a line and circled around the facility, grabbing an item from each station. Volunteers only assisted people when clients couldn't reach at item. Other volunteers were the receptionist, who checked every client in, people who restocked the inventory or ran food drives in front of grocery stores. Cons: -the place is VERY small and with so many clients piling in, it gets cramped very quickly -as a volunteer, I feel like I'm not contributing anything at all; yes, some clients were grateful I was there, but I myself felt to gratitude -the permanent volunteers are very rude, bossy, and kind of like bullies (some of these volunteers claimed certain stations, not giving others a chance to be there) -the system is very disorganized. I had to figure out what I was supposed to do for myself. Here's a bit of how the system works: 1. The receptionist checks clients in 2. Clients go around to each station, grabbing 1-3 items, depending on the number in their household

A great food bank. The volunteers are with it. The clients are wonderful! Come out on either…read moreside.
