Great community center. Great place to connect with the community. Easily accessible and convenient parking lots. Was there for a Chess tournament - used only a limited number of their facilities. But from the details they have posted there - they've got a pool, gym, dedicated exercise rooms etc. It's well maintained. Got a chance to interact with couple of staffs there during the break - nice people and great conversations. read more

Best community center in Seattle!! I was there yesterday for the 10 year celebration The upper and lower playground are great for kids. The upper playground has some shady areas thanks to trees and it would be awesome if they could add some shade canopies or something so the lower playground could have some shade, too. The pools are probably the best public pools in Seattle: just make sure you check the schedule because the swims often sell out. I wish they could still offer early morning lap swim but I think it's a staffing issue. The current childcare director, Glenn, is awesome, and so are the childcare counselors. They are an amazing team. Zumba on Wednesday evenings in the gym is free and Toni is so awesome!! She has been teaching that class for many many years. Martha, Coach, Rachel, and the other city staff are great too :) read more

New & Improved! Almost perfect! The pool area is clean, well staffed and includes a separate area for both lap swim and kids slide, lazy river & spray features. Changing/locker rooms are women's, men's and even a few family ones. Basketball court, work out area, classes all at reasonable prices - you can easily sign up for a SPARC account to register for available activities without having to go in or wait on hold. I'd give it five shining stars if it weren't for the TERRIBLE parking lot, the spaces are so small, unless you have a tiny folding disposable car, you likely can't get out your door once you do squeeze into a spot. Fix that and I'll do a happy dance! read more

Always make a point of visiting here for a spot for the kids to play. I have 2 children ages 1, and 4 years so needed to find something to do to suit all. This place is fantastic. There was plenty in it to keep my children entertained for couple hours (3 hours exact). Unfortunately for the adults sat there whilst the children play. :) Everywhere seemed clean and tidy to me, maybe it does get a mess when theres alot of children as I'm sure this place must get packed in the summer. The staff were really friendly and helpful. The kids were nagging to go back the next day but sadly they open only Monday & Friday from 10am to 1pm and $3 per child. The first time I cast a vote in a presidential election I was 6 years old; we held a mock election in my 1st grade class and Jimmy Carter won by a landslide. The first time my vote counted, it was for Dukakis. *sigh* The second time, I took the night off and watched the election returns like it was as a championship sporting event, complete with nice big bag of weed and my very own half rack of Rainier. And my team won. OVER and OVER and OVER again. Needless to say, things have gone downhill since. 1994 was terrible. 1996 was lackluster, though nothing compared to what my team would face in 2000. And well, 2004 had me with one foot over the border - off to play cowboys with my pops in Mexico. When I rolled up to the Rainier Community Center at the crack of dawn this morning, with my 3 year old in tow, it felt different. Shining young faces checking voters in, air thick with optimism, first time voters all over the place, being patiently led through the process by volunteers, people bringing donuts and fruit and bagels in with them, my kid yelling "Barack Obama!!!" at the top of his lungs (it's fun to say, no?). As I walked up to the booth to fill in my ballot, I was overcome by emotion. Suddenly my face began to LEAK! MY IS MY FACE LEAKING??? WHAT IS THAT???? I voted, stopping to pick up my kid so he could watch me fill in the oval for my presidential pick. We slid the ballot into the box together and collected our "Farewell to polls I VOTED 2008" stickers. On the way out we took a picture for a young girl excited to memorialize her first time casting a ballot, and the leaking resumed as she and I hugged it out. Again, WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT???? The Rainier Beach Community Center is a great place: for at-risk kids to do healthy things after school, to get in a couple miles in the pool, to play basketball or study ESL. Staffed by a bunch of idiotic morons. I tried to rent a room to hold my son's 8th birthday party and it was probably one of the most frustrating moments of my life. I fell in love with their multimedia room because it had a sound system set up and it would've been perfect for my son's dance party. So after checking out the place we called a few days later to try to book the room. The first person I talked to was a girl who told me the person who does room rentals wasn't available at the time but that she could take down my information and would be sure to let him know and give me a call back the next day. I waited and no calls. I waited a few more days to give them a grace period because I figure they had to be busy. But nope, still no call back. So I was getting antsy and decided to call them back. I talked to another person who said once again the person who does rentals wasn't available but he transferred me to his line and I left a message. Maybe four days passed and still nothing. At this point I'm of course super annoyed because the date is approaching and I want to ensure that that specific room is available for my specific date before someone books it before me. I call again and I FINALLY (hallelujah!) reach this elusive room booker person thingy. He says he has half my information from the first time I spoke to the girl. But he just overall sounds incompetent like he didn't know what he was doing. And he sounded like he didn't want to help me out at all. You can tell the tone of a person's voice and this guy sounded like not only did he hate his job but the last thing he wanted to do was talk to me. But we proceed and finally he asks for payment over the phone which I had to think twice before I asked him why. Like I understand this is probably routine but I didn't feel comfortable giving him my credit card information over the phone. I ask if I could pay at a later time, later as in I can go in person (since I live right up the street from the place) and pay. Call me old fashion but I want to know that my money is actually going to what I'm paying for. There is no way in hell I would divulge private info to some dude that didn't even want to help me out in the first place. But dude tells me no and that we can't proceed if I don't pay right there and then and he basically refused to help me out anymore; because he's been such a HUGE help so far, you see... Anyway. Long story short, I told dude never mind and hung up. My local community center lost out on a few hundred dollars of our money because Lord Douchebag couldn't do his job properly. Seattle Parks and Recreation seriously needs to do an overhaul on their staff at this particular branch because their staff (well this particular asshole) needs to find a job where he works with absolutely no human contact. He should work in a cave on the other side of the Earth. read more

Went today with my daughter because her classmate had bday party! What a great idea. Hour of swimming and hour of munching cupcakes in private room. The place looks clean.The pool is nice and warm but super crowded. I'm not sure how many bday parties they have today but there was so many ppl that it get bit uncomfortable in the water. Don't forget to take a quarter for the locker and wet bag for swimming suit because they don't have the dryer for it ( meaning that little tumble thingy that use to be there to dry swimming suit) Parking was a nightmare. We have to park block down the street because their parking was packed. One of the front desk ladies was kind of rude and seems bothered when I asked her about swimming lessons but other than this I think this place was good. Definitely will look into swimming lessons for my daughter here. read more

Went over today for the 3 to 4 Leisure Pool session. First off, the water is a lovely temperature, suitable for playing around, not the public pools decades ago of my childhood. Maybe the lap pool is cooler for when you are working hard. We spent about half our time on the slide. There is a feature where a current runs around a loop, and I really enjoyed getting a bit more of a workout swimming against the current, and then later floating along with the current. The spa is just the right temperature for this setting, not to cold but still not to hot for kids. Nice sprinkler water features also. The staff was friendly and helpful. The locker rooms were very nice, clean, in good condition. They have 4 good sized family locker rooms that are separate if you have kids or seniors that need some extra help. The regular locker room has separate showers and a group shower area so you can have privacy or be speedy as you like. For $5.25 for an adult this was a perfect rainy afternoon outing to get a little exercise and have some fun! We will be going back. read more

Signed up for a one month pass so I can use the pool and the facilities. I'm not quite sure how I feel about an indoor pool, but since I can't build a pool in my own backyard, I guess I'll have to learn how to settle for swimming indoors... Pool is nice and clean...best of all? It's heated. RIGHT ON. Can't go in when there is no lifeguard on duty - that makes sense. There is a lap pool and an indoor leisure pool thing - it has a spa, an endless swimming pool area for kids and some things to keep children occupied. Locker room isn't so bad, either! However, beware that around noon parents and their kids will be crawling all over this place because of the pool...sometimes you just might end up having a kid screeching right next to you as you're trying to shower. So not good with echoing acoustics. :( read more

We use this facility for evening toddler swim lessons. This is an absolutely beautiful facility - inside and out. And, they offer a lot of wonderful community programs. However, lately the common areas have been loud, chaotic, and filled with garbage. When I contacted the facility director, she indicated that they are aware of the situation and there was nothing they could do about it. Then, when we showed up for our next swim lesson, and the center was closed by the police and fire department because someone had sprayed pepper spray indoors, and it had gotten into the HVAC system. Until the center and its director take some action to ensure a safe, welcoming environment, I don't think my family or I will be back. read more

First of all based on the location of this place I did not want to go. Some friends went and said it was actually clean and decent. I wish I could say we have used the pool but we haven't. 3 different times we have tried to come here with our two year old and no success. 1st time we didn't know they had a schedule for women only or things like that. So we left with a schedule in our hands and decided to come back the following weekend, looking at the schedule Saturday has "family swim" from 11am-Noon. Fist of all one hour is Os crap but.. Any way we show up at 1015am because we figured it would be full and we were told it was closed for a private event. A private event that was not listed on the website or on the schedule we took home with us the previous weekend. TODAY we tried again and it was closed again due to a swim meet that was also not on the schedule. We will never again attempt to visit this location, the woman at the front desk was rude! Bottom line this place sucks!! I'd rather use a hose than to ever come back here. read more
