Do you want to know how hard and difficult it is to search for a rental property when you live in…read moreanother state...like Hawaii? Yeah, enter hubby and myself. We were living in Hawaii (Honolulu) and trying to find an apartment when we found out were going to be moving to Memphis. Do you know how much fun that is? I think I'd rather have gum stuck in my hair than to try to "find" a place in a whole new state, new city, and most places had very mixed reviews. It's so difficult and you're not completely not sure about the location because you have never seen it in person? Thankfully, a friend of hubby's suggested this place because he had driven by it a few times when his kids had games out in Germantown.
We took a chance, read up on what we could find on the internet and went for it. Our biggest issue was finding a short-term rental because we were only going to be in Memphis for 3 months. Miller Creek was very receptive to our email request and got back to us promptly, which was one of the main reasons why we went with them. We had sent requests and left messages with two other rental communities but never heard a peep back from them.
Long story short...Miller creek has many pro's and con's to it. I hope my list is funny, useful and cool to others looking for an apartment rental because I wished I had known about these things beforehand!!
Here are a few things that I liked or enjoyed about MC. First off, they made the whole long distance move in process relatively easy. For most people, it's probably not a huge issue, especially if you live in a nearby city or even state. It just wasn't an option for us to fly up for the day to come check it out.
The highlights: They have an awesome fitness center complete with free weights, weight machines, rower, treadmills, and pretty much anything you need for working out. There's a yoga studio building right next door which offered an early bird Insanity class. I always wished I had enough energy to get up at 6am but I never did. Just a cool thought that they offered something like that on location! There's a "garbage genie" no, not really, but they have this fantastic garbage pickup service (you do pay for it at time of move in, but it's awesome) it comes by your door 5 nights a week! Just drop it in the container right outside your door! No more fighting over who's turn it is to take out the garbage! I really liked the layout of our apartment. It was a one bedroom (model: Emory with sunroom?) and they have a ton of models to choose from on their website so we found it very helpful we could see it online especially when we were unable to see it in person. They also offer a login to your account so you can see what's going on in the community or even pay your rent! MC loves their people! It was super cool to find out they are more like a tiny community than just an apartment complex. Sadly, we never got a chance to try out any of their community activities. What rental community does this?!? Movie nights, game nights, food trucks, various outside vendors, BBQ at the pool, and even more that I can't think of! They strive to make living there super friendly and a "get to know your neighbor" kind of place!
And... the lowlights: The leasing office is very helpful, at times a bit frustrating. "Several" times when we had told them over and over about our rental insurance and license plate numbers hubby went in person to finally settle it.While the leasing staff is nice just don't' expect them to get it on the first try. While it was unfortunate our apartment had obviously NOT been pre-cleaned beforehand judging by the cobwebs, dirty toilet bowl, nasty looking oven, crumbs and rice found in the cabinets, I did my best to overlook it. I was highly unimpressed and tried to remain positive. I think if we knew how loud it was to be living above someone else's garage we would not have not chosen to live on the 2nd floor. It was very easy to hear the person below us opening and closing his garage door at 2 am or even the neighbors garage door. Yep. Every single time they came or went. Also, with living on the 2nd floor we could hear whenever our neighbors above us walked around with their hard sole shoes. It was pretty damn loud. Probably the worst part was hearing noises through the walls. Noises that should be kept to themselves. Umm, yeah, you know, those midnight noises. The ones behind closed doors. So, keep in mind if you live on the third floor. Your neighbors below you can hear you. Yes, more than you think! Ugggh!
So, would I recommend it? Yeh, but I wished I would have known some of the "cons" beforehand but overall it was a very nice community. We never had any issues with safety or security. We liked the gated security however "stupid" visitors would constantly be breaking the security arm which came down after each car. The community was well kept. I'm not sure we would want to live there any longer though, but it definitely worked for us while we were there!
